Change in the White House? Comparing the Presidencies of George W. Bush and Barack Obama

Free Admission

Thursday, April 19, 2012

Director’s Message In his 2008 presidential campaign, Barack Obama promised major departures from the George W. Bush administration’s approach to political negotiations and policies. But in the White House, several, though certainly not all, of Obama’s actions have suggested more continuity with his predecessor than change. What is the Bush (43) presidency’s legacy in American politics and the world? How has that legacy shaped the policies of President Obama? This assessment of both presidencies provides a timely discussion of their leadership successes and challenges in the White House, with attention to immediate results as well as long-term effects. The first scholarly panel will examine each president’s ability to mobilize public support and exercise political leadership, both within his own political party and more broadly. The second scholarly panel will compare foreign policy in the two administrations, focusing on Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Middle East. The symposium will conclude with a keynote panel that will evaluate the two presidencies and the implications for the 2012 presidential race. The panel will feature Kalikow Center Senior Presidential Fellows Howard B. Dean III and Edward J. Rollins, as well as Lord Stewart Wood of Anfield, Shadow Cabinet minister and Labour member of the House of Lords, and former senior policy adviser to British Prime Minister Gordon Brown (2007-2010)
