Directions to Hofstra By automobile, Hofstra can be reached easily by main east-west and north-south roads. Of the parkways, Meadowbrook Parkway is closest; it runs north and south between the Southern State Parkway and Northern State Parkway. Leave Meadowbrook Parkway at exit M4 (Hempstead Turnpike); Hofstra is approximately 1.5 miles to the west. Upon exiting Meadowbrook Parkway, follow directions below.

Location A: Student Center Theater/Multipurpose Room/Plaza Rooms/Greenhouse/ Main Dining Room, Sondra and David S. Mack Student Center, North Campus On Hempstead Turnpike, turn right at the traffic light before the second pedestrian bridge, entering North Campus. At the second STOP sign, bear left and park. Walk into the Mack Student Center (building with bell tower). Upon entering doors, please follow signs to specific location.

Location B: Leo A. Guthart Cultural Center Theater/David Filderman Gallery/

Rochelle and Irwin A. Lowenfeld Conference and Exhibition Hall,

Joan and Donald E. Axinn Library, South Campus

On Hempstead Turnpike, turn right at the traffic light before the second pedestrian bridge, entering North Campus. At the second STOP sign, bear left and park. Walk into the Mack Student Center (building with bell tower), and continue straight ahead.

Cross over pedestrian bridge to Axinn Library.

Location C: Toni and Martin Sosnoff Theater, John Cranford Adams Playhouse, South Campus On Hempstead Turnpike, travel under the second pedestrian bridge and make a U-turn at the next traffic light. Proceed 70 feet and make the first right turn onto South Campus. Go past two STOP signs and park. The building on the left is the John Cranford Adams Playhouse (lions in front of building), which houses the Toni and Martin Sosnoff Theater.

Location D: Joan and Donald Schaeffer Black Box Theater, Joseph G. Shapiro Family Hall, South Campus On Hempstead Turnpike, travel under the second pedestrian bridge and make a U-turn at the next traffic light. Proceed 70 feet and make the first right turn onto South Campus.

Go past two STOP signs and park. The building on the right is the Joseph G. Shapiro Family Hall, which houses the Joan and Donald Schaeffer Black Box Theater.

Location E: Emily Lowe Gallery, South Campus On Hempstead Turnpike, travel under the second pedestrian bridge and make a U-turn at the next traffic light. Proceed 70 feet and make the first right turn onto South Campus. Go past two STOP signs and park. The Emily Lowe Gallery of the Hofstra University Museum of Art will be on your left. There are three visitor parking spaces directly in front of the Emily Lowe Gallery.

Location F: The Helene Fortunoff Theater, Monroe Lecture Center, California Avenue, South Campus On Hempstead Turnpike, turn left at the traffic light before the second pedestrian bridge onto California Avenue. After the first STOP sign, make the first left turn into the parking lot. Monroe Lecture Center faces California Avenue.

Location G: Medical Education Theater, Room W134 Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, North Campus On Hempstead Turnpike, turn right at the traffic light before the second pedestrian bridge, entering North Campus. At the second STOP sign (Paul Manship’s Group of Bears sculpture at intersection), make a right turn onto Northern Boulevard. At the first STOP sign, turn right to enter the Zucker School of Medicine driveway and continue into the parking lot.

The Sardarni Kuljit Kaur Bindra Chair in Sikh Studies and the Sardarni Harbans Kaur Chair in Sikh Musicology are jointly organizing an international conference: Guru Nanak’s Ek-Anek Vision: Beyond Relativist and Plural Diversities of the Musical Word, to celebrate the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak. This interdisciplinary conference is built around Guru Nanak’s ek-anek (one-many) vision, to create a platform in which scholars and performers with expertise in Sufi, Bhakti, and Sikh cultures will gather to explore the pluriversal and inclusive nature of the Gur-Sikh musical and literary heritage.

Join us for performances of Sikh, Bhakti, and Sufi hymns from the Guru Granth Sahib.

This one-day symposium looks at Hofstra Professor Kathleen Wallace’s new book, The Network Self: Relation, Process, and Personal Identity (Routledge, 2019). The book offers a systematic treatment of the notion of the self as constituted by social, cultural, political, and biological relations. Inspired by feminist theories of relational selves and autonomy and by philosophers working on the nature of persons and personal identity, the book will be of interest to a wide range of disciplines. The event will feature scholars from outside as well as from within the University. Please join us for an afternoon of thought-provoking discussion as we celebrate the work of one of our colleagues.

Forums and workshops on Theodore Roosevelt’s legacy of conservation, civic engagement, and active lifestyle will be presented. Keynote presentations will be given by Michael Cullinane, author of Theodore Roosevelt’s Ghost, and Joe Wiegand, Theodore Roosevelt reprisor/ impersonator. Events are open to the public, and will be particularly interesting for educators, middle and high school students, civic activists, conservationists, historical societies, and government officials.

THE

Join us as we recognize the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the first enslaved Africans to North America and the ongoing experience of African Americans with a series of programming titled The Legacy 1619-2019.

Programming reflects the journey of African Americans over four centuries and the hopes of a people, past and present, with historical reenactments, lectures, poetry readings, and panel discussions on a range of subjects. Each is a work in progress and is important in moving beyond the last 400 years.

Unheard Voices Conceived by Judy Tate

Unheard Voices is an original monologue piece, with singing and drumming, by the award-winning writers of the American Slavery Project. Up to 30,000 men, women, and children from New York’s Colonial era are buried in the African Burial Ground in Lower Manhattan. Based on specific burials, each monologue gives one of them voice and honors those African descendants – enslaved and free – who were buried without their names.

Performance will be followed by a post-show talkback.

In collaboration with the Women’s Studies Program, the Hofstra Cultural Center, the Center for Civic Engagement, and the Center for “Race,” Culture and Social Justice.

Brooklyn and Abolition Tour

Tour takes you through historic Brooklyn Heights and will examine the abolitionist movement; includes a visit to Plymouth Church.

Meet at Brooklyn Atlantic Terminal in front of Starbucks.

Each tour will run for two hours.

Natasha Trethewey served two terms as the 19th poet laureate of the United States (2012-2014). She is the author of five poetry collections, including Monument (2018); Thrall (2012); and Native Guard (2006), for which she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize. She is the recipient of several awards and fellowships, and she was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2013.

The Cultural Politics of Taste With Krishnendu Ray

Many food writers highlight the link between taste and territory (environmental factors) called “terroir.” An argument has ensued mostly about roots and rootedness and slowing down change. This covers about half the human experience. The other half is about movement and dispersal. Billions of people are moving from country to city, from city to city, from nation to nation. Krishnendu Ray brings mobility to the center of the discussion on taste, focusing on South Asian immigrant foodways in the United States.

Krishnendu Ray is chair of nutrition and food studies at NYU, and former associate dean at Culinary Institute of America. He is the author of The Migrant’s Table (2004) and The Ethnic Restaurateur (2016), and co-editor of Curried Cultures: Globalization, Food and South Asia (2012). Ray’s most recent work is on street vending in global cities.

A screening of Strong Island explores the murder of William Ford Jr. through the eyes of his brother, Yance Ford, the Oscar-nominated director in the category of feature documentary (2018). The film looks at Long Island’s past through a detailed crime story, the legacy of trauma on one family, and the reverberating consequences on families.

The panel discussion, co-moderated by Martine Hackett, associate professor in the Master of Public Health and Community Health programs, and Nicole Franklin, assistant professor of radio, television, film, Hofstra University, will feature Keith Bush, whose murder conviction was overturned in May 2019 after he spent 33 years in prison, and a Nassau County Civil Liberties Union representative, as they discuss and take questions from the audience on systemic racism in criminal justice.

Natasha Trethewey served two terms as the 19th

poet laureate of the United States (2012-2014). She is the author of five poetry collections: Monument (2018), which was longlisted for the 2018 National Book Award; Thrall (2012); Native Guard (2006), for which she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize; Bellocq’s Ophelia (2002); and Domestic Work (2000), the winner of the inaugural Cave Canem Poetry Prize, the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters Book Prize, and the Lillian Smith Book Award for Poetry. Her book of nonfiction, Beyond Katrina: A Meditation on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, was published in 2010. She is the recipient of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Guggenheim Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library at Yale, and the Bunting Fellowship Program of the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard. Trethewey was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2013.

Kenny Fries received the prestigious Creative Capital literature

grant for In the Province of the Gods. He is the author of Body, Remember: A Memoir and The History of My Shoes and the Evolution of Darwin’s Theory, and the editor of Staring Back: The Disability Experience from the Inside Out. His books of poems include In the Gardens of Japan, Desert Walking, and Anesthesia. He is a recipient of a Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center Arts & Literary Arts Residency and has received the Creative Artists Fellowship from the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts. He writes the Disability Beat column for How We Get To Next and teaches in the MFA in Creative Writing Program at Goddard College.

Previous works include The Noble Hustle, Zone One, Sag Harbor, The Intuitionist, John Henry Days (a Pulitzer Prize finalist), Apex Hides the Hurt, and The Colossus of New York (a collection of essays). He was named New York’s 11th State Author in 2018. He is the recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Whiting Writers Award, the Dos Passos Prize for Literature, and a fellowship at the Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers. He has taught at many prestigious institutions around the country and has been a writer-in-residence at Vassar College, the University of Richmond, and the University of Wyoming.

To mark the 80th year of one of Hofstra’s distinguished alumni, Francis Ford Coppola (born April 1939), we present a series of film screenings, showcasing some of the director’s best work. From Coppola’s biggest hits of the 1970s, to his more independent productions and his recent, more personal approach to filmmaking, we are proud to present the following films.

Thursday, October 10, 7 p.m.

The Godfather (1972)

One of the true masterpieces of the American cinema, this sprawling family epic stars the incomparable Marlon Brando as the head of a New York crime family in the 1940s, with a supporting cast of future A-listers, including Al Pacino, Diane Keaton, Robert Duvall, James Caan, and Talia Shire. With stunning cinematography by one of the masters, the late Gordon Willis, this multiple-Oscar-winning film took Coppola’s career to a whole new level.

Apocalypse Now — Final Cut (1979/2019)

This mythic reimagining of Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, set during the Vietnam War, won the prestigious Palme d’Or at the 1979 Cannes Film Festival. Starring Martin Sheen, Robert Duvall, Laurence Fishburne, and Marlon Brando, the film was recently restored and expanded by Coppola’s American Zoetrope.

Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992)

Coppola’s version of the classic vampire tale takes some liberties in turning Stoker’s source novel into a stylish, gothic romance crossed with a good old-fashioned horror film.

Starring Gary Oldman as Dracula, with Winona Ryder, Keanu Reeves, Anthony Hopkins,

Tom Waits, and Cary Elwes.

The Rain People (1969)

Shot partially on Hofstra’s campus and featuring Shirley Knight, James Caan, and Robert Duvall, this feminist road movie is emblematic of the sort of independent, highly personal filmmaking to which Coppola has returned time and again throughout his career.

Tetro (2009)

Coppola’s first original screenplay since 1974, starring Vincent Gallo, Maribel Verdu, and Alden Ehrenreich in a semi-autobiographical family drama set in Buenos Aires.

Tetro exemplifies Coppola’s return to a more independent mode of film production.

Major Sjursen (U.S. Army, ret.), former history instructor at West Point, will talk about his experiences serving in Afghanistan and Iraq. He will also share his thoughts on the prospects for peace and how citizen mobilization will bring forever wars to an end.

Major Sjursen served tours with reconnaissance units in Iraq and Afghanistan and is the author of a memoir and critical analysis of the Iraq War titled Ghost Riders of Baghdad: Soldiers, Civilians, and the Myth of the Surge.

An all-day exploration of the global indigenous movement and its centuries-long struggle for the defense of territory, culture, and the environment. From Standing Rock to the Amazonian Rainforest, indigenous communities are at the forefront of today’s most important campaigns to confront extractive industries to protect sacred spaces and human rights. In this presentation, Dr. Ron Daniels, president of the Institute of the THE Black World 21st Century, will present a historic look at the centuries-old struggle for emancipation, and the current movement for reparations in the U.S. and its global implications. Dr. Daniels served as executive director of the National Rainbow Coalition in 1987, and deputy campaign manager for the Jesse Jackson for President Campaign in 1988. From 1993 to 2005, Dr. Daniels served as the first African American executive director of the Center for Constitutional Rights.

Joel K. Goldstein is a highly respected scholar of the vice presidency, presidency, and constitutional law, having written widely in all three areas.

Perhaps best known for his work on the vice presidency, his doctoral dissertation grew into his first book, The Modern American Vice Presidency: The Transformation of a Political Institution. More recently, he has written a second book on the subject, The White House Vice Presidency: The Path to Significance, Mondale to Biden. He has written numerous scholarly articles and commentary pieces on the vice presidency and is frequently interviewed by national and international media on the subject.

The Donald J. Sutherland Lecture is named for the former Hofstra trustee who endowed the annual event.

Sueño con África, 2013) and a novel (Mange-Mil y sus historias de tierra caliente, 2017), he specializes in the history and culture of Afro-descendants in the Americas, focusing in particular on Afro-Colombian, Afro-Cuban, and Afro-Argentine communities. Analyzing survey data collected one week prior to the 2016 election, it was determined that voter opinion of candidates’ character had the greatest impact on their candidate choice – more than demographic or psychographic variables collectively. A candidate’s ability to highlight their own competence and improve voters’ view of their character, i.e., present themselves in a positive light, while diminishing the character of their competitors, i.e., disparage their opponent, is a viable strategy for winning elections.

Political marketers have limited time and financial resources and need to focus on the variables that will win the most votes. Candidates, increasingly known as brandidates, may benefit more from employing pure marketers than political advisors to win elections.

Hannon, former New York state senator who served for over 30 years, recently joined Hofstra University’s School of Health Professions and Human Services as its Health Policy Fellow. This lecture and discussion will focus on how policy creation influences the patient experience and access to care. This event will seek to encourage continued collaboration among policymakers, providers, and healthcare leaders on ensuring equitable access for all.

Hofstra students, faculty, and staff will gather to commemorate the 18th anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center and honor the Hofstra community members and others lost that day. The remembrance ceremony is held at the site of the 9/11 memorial marker that bears the names of the 26 Hofstra alumni and one student who perished in 2001. The Hofstra ROTC will do the presentation of colors, and members of the Hofstra Interfaith Center and Student Counseling Services will be on hand as well.

Jeffrey Matthews is the George F. Jewett Distinguished Professor in the School of Business and Leadership at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington. He has published dozens of articles and three books, including The Art of Command: Military Leadership from George Washington to Colin Powell, which remains required reading at the U.S. Army’s Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Most recently, he completed a biography of General Colin Powell, Colin Powell: Imperfect Patriot. He is a founding partner and business director of the Camouflaj game studio, headquartered in Bellevue, Washington.

Of Men and Gods: The Expression and Complexity of Gender and

Sexuality in Haitian Vodou

Throughout history, Haitian vodou “has provided both solace and an intimate sense of community to the oppressed” (J. Katz, Smithsonian Magazine, July 2017). In honor of LGBTQ+ Heritage month, this workshop, led by special guest Moyse Romane, who is an unapologetic Black Queer Femme graduate student at the University of Albany, will introduce attendees to the role of Haitian vodou in the expression and complexity of gender and sexuality.

This session will provide an overview of intersex variations, the intersex rights movement, and resources and tools to support intersex individuals. Eli Bromberg will deliver a lecture on Barbra Streisand’s Oscar-nominated film Yentl (1983) and its significance within popular culture. Bromberg will present a survey of Yentl scholarship, discuss the text’s relationship to the 1963 Isaac Bashevis Singer Yiddish short story upon which it is based (Yentl der yeshive-bokher), and explore how this iconic American film depicts gender and sexuality in a religious Jewish context.

Film Screening: In Darkness

From acclaimed director Agnieszka Holland, In Darkness is based on a true story.

Leopold Socha, a sewer worker and petty thief in Lvov, a Nazi-occupied city in Poland, one day encounters a group of Jews trying to escape the liquidation of the ghetto. He hides them for money in the labyrinth of the town’s sewers.

What starts out as a straightforward and cynical business arrangement turns into something very unexpected, the unlikely alliance between Socha and the Jews as the enterprise seeps deeper into Socha’s conscience. The film is also an extraordinary story of survival as these men, women, and children all try to outwit certain death during 14 months of ever-increasing and intense danger.

Look Again: Old and New Films in Italian Studies Tuesday, September 24, 7 p.m.

Film Screening: Assunta Spina (1915) Live musical score performed by John T. La Barbera, guitar, and Susan Aquila, violin

A silent black and white film classic from Naples, based on the play by Salvatore DiGiacomo, starring the queen and diva of the Italian silent cinema, Francesca Bertini. The operatic tale of love and sacrifice in working class, turn-of-the-century Naples is considered to be one of the first films of Italian neorealism. Bertini’s performance set a new standard for Italian cinema. The new musical film score created by La Barbera creates an intimate atmosphere by keeping an accompaniment of emotions found in the melodic themes of the characters in a leitmotif style that highlights the melodramatic and picturesque style of the film.

Presented in collaboration with Hofstra University Professor Rodney Hill’s History of Film class.

Film Screening: War Cellar

Directed by Giovanni Pugliese, Writer, Producer Set in Rome during the end of World War II, an American soldier and an Italian woman must find a way to trust one another in order to survive. A German attack on the city forces a wounded American soldier to seek shelter in a cellar. There, he realizes that he is not alone. He is accompanied by Lucrezia, an Italian woman in her early 30s, who happens to be the daughter of the king of Italy. Both have one thing in common: the guilt bearing on their souls.

Directed by Anton Evangelista, Comprehensive Films Award-winning filmmaker Anton Evangelista travels from the Bronx to Perugia, Italy, in presenting the documentary il Signor Jackson, the unique American story of Edward Jackson, an African American man, raised in a predominantly Italian American Bronx neighborhood in the 1950s. Jackson went on to become an educator in the New York City Public School System and prominent cultural figure of Italian biculturalism and bilingualism.

Kyōgen Performance and Workshop With Members of the Yamamoto Tojiro Kyōgen Company

Members of the Yamamoto Tojiro Kyōgen Company will perform kyōgen, the traditional comic theater of Japan. The Yamamoto Kyōgen Company carries on the ancient tradition of performance for samurai clans established by the Tokugawa Shogun. The current head has been awarded the Order of the Rising Sun with Gold and Silver Rays by the emperor of Japan (2012) and designated an Intangible Cultural Asset. Seating is limited.

Hevreh Ensemble and Native American Flute Maker Daniel Bigay

Hevreh is a Hebrew word meaning “circle of friends.” Hevreh’s essence is the thread of intention and imagination that connects a Cherokee flute to a shofar.

Hevreh’s aesthetic is the double-image evoked by the intertwining of distinct musical languages, delivered with the respect of exacting classical technique, the playful joy of jazz improvisation, and the intense warmth, humor, and empathy that only a close-knit chamber ensemble can offer.

Hevreh is excited to welcome master artist, musician, and Native American flute maker Daniel Bigay to its circle of friends. Bigay belongs to the Echota Cherokee Tribe of Alabama and is of Cherokee, Choctaw, Taino, and Scot/Irish descent.

In commemoration of Indigenous Peoples Month, this collaboration includes commentary on the loss of indigenous language in Native American culture, demonstrations of the beautiful flutes that Bigay creates, opportunities to try playing a Native American flute, and a performance that includes solo works for Native American flute and works played together with the Hevreh Ensemble.

Randy Moore, a graduate of the San Francisco Institute of Art, is an internationally recognized artist and has been the focus of many solo and group exhibitions. Keiko Narahashi is a graduate of Parsons School of Design and received an MFA in painting at Bard College. She has exhibited nationally and internationally at galleries such as Jason McCoy Gallery, New York; Sheppard Contemporary Gallery, University of Nevada, Reno; Kuhn Fine Arts Gallery, Ohio State University, Marion.

She is a recipient of a Studio Grant from the Marie Walsh Sharpe Foundation and the New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship Grant for Painting. Her work was featured in New York Studio Conversations, Part II (The Green Box, Berlin), and Perfect Imperfect (Murdoch Books) and has been reviewed in The New Yorker, Vogue, and The Brooklyn Rail, among others.

Other People’s Parties Through March 13, 2020

In today’s hyperconnected social world, images of others have become a ubiquitous part of everyday life, but what is it about other people’s parties that intrigues us so much? Is it idle curiosity or something more? This exhibition, featuring photography from artists such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Larry Fink, Danny Lyon, Mary Ellen Mark, and Andy Warhol, calls attention to the highs and lows of our most social occasions, investigating the human impulse to capture party moments through photography and our desire to live vicariously through images of others.

FAMILY ART EXPLORATION ACTIVITIES Let’s Explore Backpacks The Museum’s distinct Let’s Explore Backpacks offer activity-filled ways for children (ages 5-12) and their adult companions to explore the outdoor sculpture collection on the University’s beautiful campus. Children then create their own works of art to take home.

Various backpack themes are available in English and Spanish.

Funding has been provided by Bethpage Federal Credit Union.

The Great Art Caper Children and their adult companions uncover clues to help solve an Art Caper mystery in the outdoor sculpture collection on Hofstra University’s South Campus. Children become detectives and have fun while discovering more about these works.

Pick up all backpacks (by 3 p.m.) and caper activity materials at the Emily Lowe Gallery during open hours year-round. Return all backpacks by 4 p.m. and keep your completed works of art. All backpack and caper activities are FREE! Hofstra University Museum of Art exhibitions and programs are made possible with funding from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
