Directions to Hofstra By automobile, Hofstra can be reached easily by main east-west and north-south roads. Of the parkways, Meadowbrook Parkway is closest; it runs north and south between the Southern State Parkway and Northern State Parkway. Leave Meadowbrook Parkway at exit M4 (Hempstead Turnpike); Hofstra is approximately 1.5 miles to the west. Upon exiting Meadowbrook Parkway, follow directions below.

Location A: Student Center Theater/Multipurpose Room/Plaza Rooms/Greenhouse/ Main Dining Room, Sondra and David S. Mack Student Center, North Campus On Hempstead Turnpike, turn right at the traffic light before the second pedestrian bridge, entering North Campus. At the second STOP sign, bear left and park. Walk into the Mack Student Center (building with bell tower). Upon entering doors, please follow signs to specific location.

Location B: Leo A. Guthart Cultural Center Theater/David Filderman Gallery/ Rochelle and Irwin A. Lowenfeld Conference and Exhibition Hall, Joan and Donald E. Axinn Library, South Campus On Hempstead Turnpike, turn right at the traffic light before the second pedestrian bridge, entering North Campus. At the second STOP sign, bear left and park. Walk into the Mack Student Center (building with bell tower), and continue straight ahead.

Cross over pedestrian bridge to Axinn Library.

Location C: Toni and Martin Sosnoff Theater, John Cranford Adams Playhouse, South Campus On Hempstead Turnpike, travel under the second pedestrian bridge and make a U-turn at the next traffic light. Proceed 70 feet and make the first right turn onto South Campus. Go past two STOP signs and park. The building on the left is the John Cranford Adams Playhouse (lions in front of building), which houses the Toni and Martin Sosnoff Theater.

Location D: Joan and Donald Schaeffer Black Box Theater, Joseph G. Shapiro Family Hall, South Campus On Hempstead Turnpike, travel under the second pedestrian bridge and make a U-turn at the next traffic light. Proceed 70 feet and make the first right turn onto South Campus.

Go past two STOP signs and park. The building on the right is the Joseph G. Shapiro Family Hall, which houses the Joan and Donald Schaeffer Black Box Theater.

Location E: Emily Lowe Gallery, South Campus On Hempstead Turnpike, travel under the second pedestrian bridge and make a U-turn at the next traffic light. Proceed 70 feet and make the first right turn onto South Campus. Go past two STOP signs and park. The Emily Lowe Gallery of the Hofstra University Museum will be on your left. There are three visitor parking spaces directly in front of the Emily Lowe Gallery.

Location F: The Helene Fortunoff Theater, Monroe Lecture Center, California Avenue, South Campus On Hempstead Turnpike, turn left at the traffic light before the second pedestrian bridge onto California Avenue. After the first STOP sign, make the first left turn into the parking lot. Monroe Lecture Center faces California Avenue. Note: Due to construction, parking is limited during 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Location G: Medical Education Theater, Room W134 Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, North Campus On Hempstead Turnpike, turn right at the traffic light before the second pedestrian bridge, entering North Campus. At the second STOP sign (Paul Manship’s Group of Bears sculpture at intersection), make a right turn onto Northern Boulevard. CONFERENCES AND SYMPOSIA Wednesday, October 3 Long Island Hurricanes on the 80th Anniversary of the 1938 Storm: Past, Present, and Future

The unnamed 1938 hurricane – nicknamed the Long Island Express due to its fast-forward motion and initial landfall in Suffolk County – brought abrupt and untold devastation to the northeastern United States, particularly Long Island’s East End. To commemorate the 80th anniversary of that hurricane and look ahead to the future, this interdisciplinary symposium will recount the many impactful tropical cyclones that have affected Long Island over the years, assess our current forecasting and hazard communication techniques, and discuss future planning for resilience to these extreme events. Despite that storm, and several New York hurricane landfalls in subsequent decades, the recent experience of superstorm Sandy underscores our vulnerability to the impacts of tropical cyclones, particularly storm surges and coastal flooding.

The symposium will host keynote speaker Dr. Louis W. Uccellini, assistant administrator for weather services at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and director of the National Weather Service.

Thursday, October 18 70th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is a milestone document in the history of human rights. Drafted by representatives with different legal and cultural backgrounds from all regions of the world, the Declaration was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in Paris on December 10, 1948, as a common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations. Join us as we commemorate the power of the Universal Declaration and its power of ideas to change the world as it inspires us to continue working to ensure that all people can gain freedom, equality, and dignity. The symposium will host keynote speaker Dr. Blanche Wiesen Cook, distinguished professor of history and women’s studies at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. Cook is also the author and biographer of Eleanor Roosevelt, Vols. I, II, III, who is considered the architect in the development of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Wednesday, October 24 New Netherland, New Amsterdam: A Celebration of Dutch Heritage and Transatlantic Exchange

Marking the 25th anniversary of Hofstra University’s oldest international student exchange program, this symposium will serve as an opportunity for the University to review, renew, and broaden its understanding of its own Dutch heritage and identity, and rising profile in national and international contexts. It will feature panels on the student experience in Amsterdam in Holland and at Hofstra in New York; and on the organization of life from the 17th century on in Dutch houses and villages in Holland, New Netherland and New Amsterdam. The keynote address will be given by bestselling author, historian, and journalist Russell Shorto, whose book The Island at the Center of the World: The Epic Story of Dutch Manhattan and the Forgotten Colony That Shaped America (2004) has led to a broad reconsideration of the early Dutch colonial period of New York City, New York state, and surrounding areas. In addition, Tweed Roosevelt, the great-grandson of Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt, will speak about his family’s roots in the early settlement of New Amsterdam and the social climate of those times.

Wednesday-Friday, November 7-9 Artistic Expressions and the Great War: A Hundred Years On

Marking the 100th anniversary of the end of the Great War, this interdisciplinary conference will explore the impact of total war on the arts from a transnational perspective, including attention to the Ottoman Empire and colonial territories. We are defining arts broadly – literature, performing arts, visual arts, and media, including film, propaganda, and other mass-mediated forms. World War I was the matrix on which all subsequent violence of the 20th century was forged. The war took millions of lives, led to the fall of four empires, established new nations, and negatively affected others. During and after the war, individuals and communities struggled to find expression for their wartime encounters and communal as well as individual mourning. Throughout this time of enormous upheaval, many artists redefined their place in society, among them writers, performers, painters, and composers. This conference explores the ways that artists contributed to wartime culture – both representing and shaping it – as well as the ways in which wartime culture influenced artistic expressions. Keynote speaker Sarah Cole is Parr professor of English and comparative literature and dean of humanities at Columbia University.

Thursday, November 15 First International Symposium on Creative Writing in Spanish: First Pristine Stone: International Symposium on Creative Writing

On the inauguration of the new Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Creative Writing for Writers of Spanish at Hofstra, distinguished writers from Latin America and Spain will read excerpts of their works in bilingual format, as well as participate in dialogues about current Spanish literature and literary translation. Ta-Nehisi Coates is a former national correspondent for The Atlantic, recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship, and winner of the 2015 National Book Award for his book, Between the World and Me. Coates has emerged as an essential voice for our times. His award-winning writing combines reportage, historical analysis, and personal narrative to address some of America’s most complex and challenging issues pertaining to culture and identity. Since 2016, Coates has written Marvel’s The Black Panther comic book about Wakanda, the famed African nation known for its vast wealth, advanced technology and warrior traditions – Wakanda Forever.

In addition, Coates recently signed with Marvel to create a new series based on the 1966 Captain America.

The Central Park Five

In 1989, the rape and beating of a white female jogger in Central Park made international headlines. Many accounts reported the incident as an example of “wilding” – episodes of poor, minority youths roaming the streets looking for trouble. Police intent on immediate justice for the victim coerced five African-American and Latino boys to plead guilty. The teenage boys were quickly convicted and imprisoned. Dr. Natalie P. Byfield, who covered the case for the New York Daily News, revisits the story of the Central Park Five from her perspective as a black female reporter in the book Savage Portrayals.

Filmmaker Ken Burns’ documentary about the five black and Latino teenagers from Harlem who were arrested in 1989 and later convicted of raping a white woman in New York City’s Central Park. The Central Park Five tells the story of that horrific crime, the rush to judgment by the police, a media clamoring for sensational stories, an outraged public, and the five lives upended by this miscarriage of justice. A discussion led by Dr. Natalie P. Byfield will follow the screening.

In this panel discussion, Byfield will illuminate the race, class, and gender biases in the massive media coverage of the crime and the prosecution of the now-exonerated defendants. The sociological analysis and first-person account in her book persuasively argue that the racialized reportage of the case buttressed efforts to try juveniles as adults across the nation.

Savage Portrayals casts new light on this famous crime and its far-reaching consequences for the wrongly accused and the justice system.

Wednesday, October 10, 11:15 a.m.-12:40 p.m. (Common Hour) The “Educated Native”: A Personal Journey Through the American Education System

Dr. Nichole Prescott, assistant vice chancellor for academic affairs, University of Texas System, currently takes a lead role in implementing the Texas Prospect Initiative, which is designed to strengthen the PK-20 pipeline and enhance college readiness, with a focus on underserved minority populations. But as a Myaamia (Native American), woman, and first-generation college student, Prescott’s educational and professional success was not a foregone conclusion. In this talk, she embeds the story of her own educational experiences in a broader discussion about the historically tumultuous relationship that Native Americans have had with the hegemonic, mono-cultural approach to education in America. As a tool of colonization and assimilation, education has been used to inflict cultural violence on Native peoples in the past (some would argue that it continues to do so). Yet this talk suggests that it may now hold the key to economic self-sufficiency and empowerment today.

Compelled by her akima (chief) to go to graduate school in 1998, Prescott set off on an educational journey that combined traditional cultural and mainstream education. This journey would empower her relationship with her culture, awaken her activism for social justice, and equip her with the tools to address the systemic damage done to underserved communities.

Dr. Irwin Redlener, pediatrician, public health activist, and author of The Future of Us, draws on his personal experiences to investigate the nation’s health care safety net and special programs that are designed to protect and nurture our most vulnerable kids, but that too often fail to do so. The lecture will be followed by a multidisciplinary panel of respondents and a book signing.

Are Trade Wars “Easy to Win” or Even Worth Having?

A Debate on the Trump Administration’s Trade Policy

In the past two years, President Donald Trump has dramatically changed U.S. trade policy by invoking his powers under U.S. law to impose substantial tariffs on numerous countries around the world and by seeking to change or potentially terminate existing trade agreements like NAFTA and the World Trade Organization Agreement. The merits of his new aggressive approach to trade have been sharply criticized by many economists 8 • hofstra.edu/culture

and analysts. But his policy also has many strong defenders who believe it will revive and strengthen the U.S. economy as well as weaken geopolitical rivals like China. Hofstra is pleased to host this debate between two experienced and knowledgeable analysts of U.S. trade policy who will discuss and debate the merits of the Trump administration’s new approach to trade. Krugman has spent more than 20 years writing extensively for the lay person about economics, the economy, and the effect politics has on both. Know Your Lines: Gerrymandering U.S. Elections

Does your local congressional election feel like a foregone conclusion? Increasingly, many electoral districts are designed to be this way. The word for this is gerrymandering – the practice of politicians drawing electoral boundary lines to benefit a specific party. Not only is it problematic for an electoral republic, but gerrymandering can make politicians more extreme and voters effectively powerless and apathetic. This multidisciplinary panel will explore how gerrymandering became so common in the United States, the current state of gerrymandering and its consequences, and methods for identifying gerrymanders to confront and prevent the manipulation of electoral districts. To do so, it will draw on the expertise of Dr. Katrina Sims, Dr. Johanna Franklin, and Dr. Craig Dalton of the Departments of History, Mathematics, and Global Studies and Geography, respectively, at Hofstra University.

Geography Awareness Week Wednesday, November 14, 4:30 p.m.

Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley: Image and Reality This talk will focus on how Youngstown, Ohio, and the Mahoning Valley have become the archetype of the once prosperous industrial region that has declined in the post-industrial era. In the wake of the 2016 presidential election, it has become a rite of passage for journalists to take pilgrimages to Youngstown to attempt to understand why a region that has traditionally voted for Democrats gave a solid majority to Donald Trump. This presentation will place the Mahoning Valley in the geographic context of U.S. cultural and economic regions; identify the cultural traditions that define the Mahoning Valley; and explore the recent economic evolution that is transforming the region. The outcome of the 2016 election was decided by places such as the Mahoning Valley; an outcome that is the product of its ongoing geographic development.

Digital Cartographies of Everyday Life

As the ubiquity of digital mapping tools and geographic information systems continues to transform our understanding of urban spaces and processes, the question remains, “Whose city are we mapping?”

Popularizing the tools of mapping does not directly imply democratizing the map. Rather, as Leah Meisterlin argues in this talk, alternative cartographies are still needed to describe and draw the pluralism of diverse cities. Further, while geographic information systems (GIS) are often cited (and sometimes vilified) as a totalizing technology, she proposes an analytical framework for the systematic mapping to describe comparative differences and every experience.

In 2017, Hofstra University received a U.S. Economic Development Administration i6 Challenge grant to launch the Healthcare Entrepreneurship Community Challenge (the Challenge), a program to inspire entrepreneurs to develop innovations that respond to health care issues in underserved communities on Long Island, in New York City, and in the Hudson Valley. The Challenge is a partnership between the Center for Entrepreneurship, School of Health Professions and Human Services (HPHS), Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, and Northwell Ventures. The program culminates in a regional symposium, where the entrepreneurs will exhibit their innovations and pitch for a chance to win $25,000 in prize money sponsored by Northwell Health, Digital Remedy, HPHS, the Office of the Provost, and the Frank G. Why didn’t more folks evacuate the coasts before “Superstorm” Sandy hit in 2012, despite the predictions of devastation that turned out to be very accurate? Hofstra University was awarded a grant in 2014 to study this question among residents of Long Beach, New York, bringing together backgrounds in psychology, rhetoric, and geology for this critical societal need. The resulting research was published this year in the Journal of Applied Communication Research. This presentation will explore the interdisciplinary research process; a summary of results, including recommendations for better public storm warnings; and promising directions for future research.

Elisabeth J. Ploran is an assistant professor in the Department of Psychology at Hofstra University. She teaches classes in cognitive psychology and neuroscience, with a specialization in memory, perception, and attention.

Mary Anne Trasciatti is an associate professor in the Department of Writing Studies and Rhetoric at Hofstra University. She teaches classes in persuasion, political communication, and popular culture.

E. Christa Farmer is an associate professor in the Department of Geology, Environment, and Sustainability at Hofstra University, and the co-editor of Learning From the Impacts of Superstorm Sandy (2015) with J. Bret Bennington. She teaches classes in paleoclimatology, environmental geology, and sedimentation.

He got his start writing on several network series before joining Fox’s Family Guy, where he was on the original writing staff and went on to pen many memorable episodes featuring Brian and Stewie. He then wrote on NBC’s Will & Grace, where he rose to executive producer and showrunner. Most recently, he created, executive produced, and wrote all episodes of the ITV/PBS series Vicious starring Sir Ian McKellen.

NeuroSpeculative AfroFeminism: Digital Design and Narratives of Color With Carmen Aguilar y Wedge, Co-founder of Hyphen-Labs

NeuroSpeculative AfroFeminism (NSAF) is an award-winning, three-part digital narrative that sits at the intersection of product design, virtual reality (VR), and neuroscience.

Inspired by the lack of multidimensional representations of black women in technology, NSAF products range from sunblock for traveling through the multiverse, to earrings embedded with cameras that offer protection and visibility. The VR experience is set in a neurocosmetology lab where black women are pioneering techniques of brain optimization and cognitive enhancement. Scientific research explores the neurological and physiological impact of showing images of empowered black women as well as content made for and by women of color.

VR is the immersive platform that transports viewers into a neurocosmetology lab, a reimagined black hair salon, placing the viewer into a black woman’s body and providing a glimpse into a speculative future of black women pioneering brain research and neuromodulation through the culturally specific ritual of haircare.

THE 2018 DONALD J. SUTHERLAND LECTURE presents Relic: How Our Constitution Undermines Effective Government – And Why We Need a More Powerful Presidency William G. Howell Sydney Stein Professor in American Politics University of Chicago

Our government is failing us. From health care to immigration, from the tax code to climate change, our political institutions cannot deal effectively with the challenges of modern society.

Why the dysfunction? Contemporary reformers single out the usual suspects, including polarization and the rise in campaign spending. But what if the roots go much deeper, to the nation’s founding? Co-authored with Terry Moe, Relic is a provocative and essential book for our era of political dysfunction and popular despair. It sheds new light on what is wrong with our government and what can be done about it, challenging us to reconsider the very foundation of the American experiment.

The Donald J. Sutherland Lecture is named for the former Hofstra trustee who endowed the annual event.

Film Screening and Discussion 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

Humanity finds a mysterious, obviously artificial object buried beneath the lunar surface and, with the intelligent computer H.A.L. 9000, sets off on a quest. Directed by Stanley Kubrick. A discussion will follow the screening led by Jan Harlan, film producer and the brother of Christiane Kubrick, director Stanley Kubrick’s widow.

How the Apollo Program Solved the Riddle of the Origin of the Moon Before Apollo astronauts landed on the lunar surface in 1969, there were several competing theories explaining the origin of the moon. From studying the lunar samples returned to Earth, geologists ended up discarding all existing theories and instead settled on a new and violent explanation for the birth of the moon. Join us at the Cradle of Aviation Museum as we examine the geology of the Moon and learn how Apollo changed everything we thought we knew about the Earth’s planetary companion.

Just in time for some Halloween fun, join us for a day full of “spooktacular” interactive fun. Haunted horror awaits with classic horror films, popcorn, and treats. Listen to stories about Hofstra ghosts and apparitions while on guided tour of the South Campus.

SCAREFEST

Join us for a slice of fright as we have compiled a list of old favorites and contemporary films that offer some seriously spine-tingling experiences. Free popcorn and candy available.

Frankenstein (1931). This iconic horror film follows the obsessed scientist

Dr. Henry Frankenstein as he attempts to create life by assembling a creature from body parts of the deceased. Aided by his loyal misshapen assistant, Fritz Frankenstein succeeds in animating his monster but, confused and traumatized, it escapes into the countryside and begins to wreak havoc.

Bride of Frankenstein (1935). After recovering from injuries sustained

in the mob attack upon himself and his creation, Dr. Frankenstein falls under the control of his former mentor, Dr. Pretorius, who insists the now-chastened doctor resume his experiments in creating new life.

Dracula (1931). After a harrowing ride through the Carpathian mountains

in eastern Europe, Renfield enters castle Dracula to finalize the transferral of Carfax Abbey in London to Count Dracula, who is in actuality a vampire.

Renfield is drugged by the eerily hypnotic count, and turned into one of his thralls, protecting him during his sea voyage to London.

Poltergeist (1982). Strange and creepy happenings beset an average

California family, the Freelings – Steve, Diane, teenaged Dana, eight-yearold Robbie, and five-year-old Carol Ann – when ghosts commune with them through the television set. Initially friendly and playful, the spirits turn unexpectedly menacing, and, when Carol Ann goes missing, Steve and Diane turn to a parapsychologist and eventually an exorcist for help.

Ghostbusters: Answer the Call (2016). Paranormal researcher Abby Yates and physicist Erin Gilbert are trying to prove that ghosts exist in modern society. When strange apparitions appear in Manhattan, Gilbert and Yates turn to engineer Jillian Holtzmann for help. Also joining the team is Patty Tolan, a lifelong New Yorker who knows the city inside and out. Armed with proton packs and plenty of attitude, the four women prepare for an epic battle as more than 1,000 mischievous ghouls descend on Times Square.

Ronald Elward offers insight into the (mythical) origins of the Inca people, the empire, and the organization of imperial families and their role during the colonial period before asking: What happened to the descendants of the Incas?

In 1800, the indigenous elite in the city of Cusco included about 90 families.

What impact did the Rebellion of Túpac Amaru II and the independence of Peru have on the fate of these Inca families, in Cusco and nearby towns? Do any of these families survive to this day?

Millenary Lima: A New Narrative for an Invented City

Millenary Lima is the slogan of a recent campaign to rewrite the official narrative of the city of Lima, Peru, rethinking the historical experience of the indigenous and mestizo population. The official story of its European colonial origins, stressing the legitimacy of European and Creole contributions, was maintained for over 500 years, downplaying the civilizations that had inhabited the city of Lima for over 4,000 years, and which had been well-developed prior to the European arrival. This lecture will trace the origins of the Millenary Lima campaign and its connections with the explosion of migration from the countryside to the city since the 1960s. These demographic changes helped to signify the city as a culturally and symbolically mestizo territory.

Making Machu Picchu: The Politics of Tourism in 20th-Century Peru

Millions of travelers have visited Machu Picchu, dubbed, the “Lost City” by Hyram Bingham in 1913. When Bingham first encountered Machu Picchu, the site was an obscure ruin. Now designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Machu Picchu is the focus of Peru’s tourism economy. Mark Rice, assistant professor of Latin American Studies, Baruch College, CUNY, traces its history in the 20th century – from its “discovery” to today’s travel boom – revealing how it was transformed into both a global travel destination and a powerful symbol of the Peruvian nation. The lecture will explore the contradictions and ironies of Machu Picchu’s transformation, calling attention to the importance of tourism in the creation of national identity in Peru, and in Latin America more generally.

Not People, They’re Animals: Criminalizing Immigrant Youth and the Myths Behind MS-13

Donald Trump referred to people deported from the U.S. as “animals” during a meeting about California’s “sanctuary” law last May, referring to convicted members of the gang MS-13. It was one of many instances in which immigrants were linked to criminality. In this panel discussion, we will explore the roots of MS-13 and why media coverage has failed to adequately represent the threat that it actually poses to the community and the reasons for its emergence in the U.S. Panelists include Sergio Argueta, community activist and founder of S.T.R.O.N.G. Youth, Inc. and invited journalists who have covered the gang situation on Long Island and across the country.

Music and Memory: The “Uncle From America,” A Bridge Between Rural Italy and New York (1930-1970)

An ethnomusicologist, composer, and musician, Professor Nicola Scaldaferri from the University of Milan (Italy) presents a lecture-recital that discusses the musical and cultural activity of Italian migrants in New York and on Long Island before and after World War II. He will delve into musical and linguistic research, touching on the issues of subjective and collective memory, and intercultural communication. Scaldaferri will also perform traditional southern Italian music on the zampogna (bagpipe), accompanied by the percussionist Massimo Cusato on tamburello.

The lecture examines the case study of Joe Chiaffitella (1900-1980), known as the “Uncle From America,” who pioneered the promotion of numerous initiatives in both public and private spheres – such as audio recordings, home movies, and photographs – with the purpose of keeping alive the links between his home village, San Costantino Albanese (in Basilicata, southern Italy), and the community of migrants based in the New York area during the period 1930-1970.

Events in Charlottesville, Virginia, have reignited a longstanding debate over how the past should be remembered in public spaces. Professor Fraser Ottanelli will explore the relationship between memory, identity, and politics by focusing the debate surrounding statues of Christopher Columbus and the ancient Roman column commemorating the 1933 transatlantic flight of fascist aviator Italo Balbo in Chicago.

Writing About Other People’s Memories: Passing on Holocaust Testimonies

This lecture discusses postmemory, the transmission of memory and trauma from generation to generation. The children and grandchildren of survivors have a living connection to the memories that were passed on to them. Survivors’ memories become their memories, and to some degree they are held captive to the past. They are caught between absence and presence, between their elders’ pasts and the lives they are living.

As the second, third, and fourth generations begin to dominate current publishing about the Holocaust memories transmitted to them, these issues are increasingly important and have individual, community, and cultural implications.

Author Renée Kann Silver describes her experience in Europe as a Jewish child during World War II in And Yet, I Still Loved France: Memoir of a European Childhood.

The lecture will begin with a brief setting both geographically and historically surrounding her early childhood and leading up to the experience of war in France.

She will discuss experiencing the brutal anti-Semitism of the French Vichy government, miraculously finding safety in the village of Le Chambon sur Lignon and her flight to Switzerland, and why she still loves France.

Dream of a Common Language

by Heather McDonald directed by Jennifer Hart This intriguing work was inspired by an actual incident: Women were banned from the artists’ dinner to plan the first Impressionist painting exhibit in 1874, even though works by women were to be shown. In the play, the dinner is at the home of Victor, a successful artist, and Clovis, an artist who no longer paints. by Barbara Hammond directed by Mahayana Landowne In February 2012, five young women walked into a church in the center of Moscow and offered up a punk prayer: “Virgin Mary, Chase Putin Away!” The young activists, who call themselves Pussy Riot, played and shouted for exactly 48 seconds before being dragged out of the church by security guards and sent home. After posting the performance to YouTube, the girls were arrested, tried, and sent to labor camps for hooliganism and inciting religious hatred. However, the media could not be quieted and turned Pussy Riot into the greatest piece of performance art in Russian history. This is their story.

Changing Perceptions: World War I and the Visual Arts Through December 14 World War I changed the perception of war from a heroic and romanticized point of view to the horrific reality of combat.

The perception of what art was and could be was also transformed.

This exhibition provides a glimpse into the artistic worlds of France, Germany, and Russia following World War I and examines a selection of the vast activities happening in the visual arts during that time period. The exhibition highlights permanent collection works, including paintings by Conrad Felixmüller, George Grosz, and Georges Rouault; prints by Marc Chagall, Juan Gris, and Käthe Kollwitz; and photographs by August Sander.

Ephemera and book arts from the Weingrow Collection of AvantGarde Art and Literature at Hofstra University supplement the Museum’s collection works, along with works of art loaned from other museums and galleries.

Presented in conjunction with the Hofstra Cultural Center conference.

Hidden in Sight: Photographing Incarceration Through March 10, 2019 The United States has the highest rate of incarceration of any country in the world, with over 2 million people currently imprisoned. This exhibition features photographs spanning more than 50 years by three artists – Danny Lyon (American, born 1942), Jessica Earnshaw (Canadian, born 1983), and Isadora Kosofsky (American, born 1993) – highlighting the varied critical issues within the prison system in America.
