Social Studies Education Thanks to his freshman history teacher in high school – Hofstra alum Angela Wheat ’02 – Jose Ortiz knew his path in life. “The way [Ms. Wheat] made me understand history and care about my surroundings sparked something in me other subjects didn’t.” Wheat continued to mentor Ortiz and inspired him to consider Hofstra for graduate school. “[She] told me about [Program Director, Secondary Social Studies Education] Alan Singer and about his dedication to make public schools into something better.” Ortiz began teaching social studies and economics at the Bushwick Academy of Urban Planning right after he graduated, thanks to yet another Hofstra alumnus who reached out to Singer. “As [Singer] always does, he forwarded the email, and I was one of the lucky ones who was called and called back for the job.”

Ortiz hit the ground running. He oversaw the yearbook and student government, and even launched a project with seniors in his Participation in Government class to clean up Bushwick streets, getting the attention of the city councilman who chairs the council’s Sanitation Committee and an invitation for the class to participate in a Sanitation Committee meeting. In 2015, Ortiz came full circle when he accepted a position at his alma mater, Freeport High School, teaching U.S. History and Government. “It’s incredible! I now share my classroom with Angela Wheat – the same room where she taught me my love for social studies years ago.” Ortiz is also the co-advisor for the high school’s student government and the assistant coach for the varsity softball team, working with head coach and a fellow Hofstra alum Rich Genzone. 3
Literacy Studies The School of Education’s Literacy Studies program develops certifed literacy specialists whose expertise in evaluating literacy development, along with their deep knowledge of pedagogical practices, enables them to become expert, engaging, and successful teachers. The need for certifed literacy specialists has increased tremendously with the nation’s adoption of the Common Core State Standards initiative, which identifes both

reading and writing as central to success in all content areas, while emphasizing the ongoing need for students to read literature and literary nonfction. Response to Intervention (RTI) – a national initiative that provides support for all students, including students in high-needs areas, students with disabilities, and English language learners – has also boosted the need for certifed literacy specialists. Within an RTI framework,
The Reading/Writing Learning Clinic at Hofstra’s Joan and Arnold Saltzman Community Services Center is a site for developing exemplary teaching practices, for training interns in the literacy studies graduate programs, and for conducting state-of-the-art literacy research. It provides services to families in the communities that surround Hofstra University as well as in the larger metropolitan area.
Gina Sipley PhD candidate literacy specialists and classroom teachers with literacy certifcation are essential in literacy assessment and evaluation, providing instructional support, and sharing expertise with teachers trying to support learners who are struggling. Hofstra offers master’s, advanced certifcate, and doctoral programs in literacy studies. Originally known as the Reading Department, the Literacy Studies Department has been conferring doctoral degrees since 1970. Hofstra offers the only doctoral programs in literacy studies in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Literacy Studies Gina Sipley selected the Hofstra School of Education’s PhD in Literacy Studies program because of the faculty’s commitment to students and the freedom it provided for her to pursue her research interests. “Hofstra is a dynamic institution because the faculty prioritize teaching and mentoring – a rare gem at a research-oriented university.” Sipley is a tenure-track instructor of reading, basic education, and women’s studies at Nassau Community College (SUNY) and the coordinator of emerging educational technologies. She is also the technology director for the NEST: Nassau Empowerment and Support for Tomorrow, the food pantry at Nassau Community College. Prior to her appointment at Nassau Community College, she taught middle and high school students on both the East and West Coasts. Her experience led to her focus on digital literacies. “It allowed me to understand the various gaps across the spectrum of a student’s educational experience and to imagine some of the ways that technology might ease the transition between educational spaces.” Sipley credits her School of Education professors with her recent scholarly achievements. “The courses I have taken with Dr. Jeanne Henry and Dr. Andrea Garcia have been instrumental to my success.” In a course she took with Dr. Henry, Gamification of Literacy, Sipley coded a game called “Feelings” in Ruby on Rails, an open-source web framework. Her game earned her a place in the Intel Two5Six Scholar program, an initiative aimed at inspiring game development among women and people of color. Sipley is also a content developer and assessment team collaborator on the SUNY Emerging Technologies for Lifelong Learners MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) hosted on the Coursera platform, utilizing many of the quantitative analytical skills she learned in Dr. Sage Rose’s Advanced Methods in Educational Statistics course. Sipley’s research on depictions of young female innovators in young adult literature was published in the National Council of Teachers of English peer-reviewed English Journal, and her research on “bring your own device” mobile technologies in the community college classroom, which she began in Dr. Andrea Garcia’s Translanguaging and Biliteracy course, was published in the peer-reviewed English Record. She has presented her research at the international Modern Language Association Convention and the National Convention of Teachers of English. Sipley hopes to someday develop an app to assist students in becoming masterful writers.

Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL, Grades K-12) As an undergraduate, Ashley Garry gained experience teaching in foreign countries, which strongly influenced her decision to pursue a master’s degree in TESOL K-12 in her own backyard. Garry graduated from SUNY Cortland in December 2013 with an MA in childhood education (Grades 1-6). She attended the University of Ghana, West Africa, for a summer study abroad trip and upon graduation, she volunteered at an orphanage in Costa Rica, where she taught English to children as well as to the staff. “I fell in love with the cultural differences and knew I wanted to work with students who had very diverse backgrounds, and even those at social risk,” Garry said. “I grew up in East Meadow, New York, and Hofstra always caught my attention. I knew one day I would apply to further my education there.” Garry currently teaches English as a Second Language and an after-school Test of English as a Foreign Language review class at St. Anthony’s High School on Long Island. All of her students are international and live with local host families. Collectively, they speak several languages, including Chinese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, and Russian. “I love this position because I am able to work with a diverse range of learners, all who have very different backgrounds, cultures, and traditions,” something she was well-prepared to do thanks to her graduate studies at Hofstra, she said. Garry has also enjoyed coaching the St. Anthony’s varsity badminton team. “The way learning and teaching happens ranges incredibly across the world,” Garry said. “Learning about the different ways to teach has [enabled me] to differentiate my teaching styles to really reach all of my English language learners.”

Educational and Policy Leadership Doctoral candidate Marlene Ramos-Velita is chair of the World Languages program and the English as a New Language (ENL) program at South Middle School in Great Neck, New York, where she also teaches Spanish. After receiving an advanced certificate from Hofstra, Ramos-Velita returned for a doctorate in educational and policy leadership. “As the education landscape changes, we need to stay current and connected to the world around us. Hands-on learning is key, and Hofstra has certainly embraced this, and strives to achieve this in its courses.” In addition to her work at South Middle School, Ramos-Velita operates an educational nonprofit organization, El Centro, that offers summer internships for high school juniors and seniors to teach English to new immigrants. “Through the Leadership and Policy Studies program, I’ve become a ‘reflective practitioner’ – one who thinks critically and continually strives for improvement. This program has helped me grow as a leader, and I’m able to pass on this philosophy to my team of teachers at Great Neck and at El Centro.” Ramos-Velita has used her experiences as the chair of the ENL Department at South Middle School to guide her course work. “The research I’ve conducted for my dissertation, Mainstream Teacher Experiences With ENL Students, has allowed me to dive deeper into my field. Hofstra emphasizes hands-on learning and applying theory to practice. As the head of the ENL Department, I feel that through my education at Hofstra, I’ve truly become an expert in my area.”

In spring 2015, Hofstra University’s Childhood (Grades 1-6) Special Education program received the approximately $1.25 million School Age Low Incidence Scholars (SALIS) grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The goal of the SALIS grant is to prepare highly qualifed elementary (Grades 1-6) teachers in childhood special education. The SALIS program prepares educators to support school-age children with disabilities.
Rachael Lathrop The U.S. Department of Education Offce of Special Education Programs provides grant support for the following programs: 4Hofstra Early Childhood Intervention Specialist; must be accepted into Special Education Early Childhood Intervention (Birth-Grade 2), MSEd 4Hofstra Early Childhood Interdisciplinary Professionals; must be accepted into Inclusive Early Childhood Special Education (Birth-Grade 2), MSEd 4Hofstra School Age Low Incidence Scholars (SALIS); must be accepted into Special Education (Grades 1-6), MSEd Master’s Programs: Early Childhood Education Programs (Birth-Grade 2): 4Early Childhood Special Education, MSEd 4Inclusive Early Childhood Special Education, MSEd 4Literacy Studies (Birth-Grade 6) and Special Education (Birth-Grade 2), MSEd 4Special Education Early Childhood Intervention, MSEd Childhood/Elementary Education Programs (Grades 1-6): 4Elementary Special Education (Grades 1-6), MSEd 4Inclusive Elementary Special Education, MSEd 4Literacy Studies (Birth-Grade 6) and Special Education (Grades 1-6), MSEd 4Special Education (Grades 1-6), MSEd Secondary Education Programs: 4Inclusive Secondary Special Education, MSEd 4Secondary Special Education Generalist, MSEd 4Student with Disabilities 7-12 Generalist with Extensions, MSEd

MSEd, ’16 Inclusive Elementary Special Education Before she even graduated from the School of Education’s Inclusive Elementary Special Education program, Rachael Lathrop was offered a full-time teaching job. She accepted a position at Jenks East Intermediate School in Tulsa, Oklahoma – her hometown – where she now works as a special education teacher. Lathrop received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Quinnipiac University, but her “love for special education” inspired her to pursue a graduate degree at Hofstra. “It allowed me to receive my initial certification in general and special education in just two years,” she said. Lathrop often taps into what she learned in her classes at Hofstra as she teaches her own students. “I keep multiple binders of resources that I received from my professors in my desk at work and refer to them when I have a particular student I feel could benefit from them,” she said. “My edTPA experience also helped mold me into the teacher I am today,” Lathrop said. Indeed, the School of Education has systematically made changes in course work and field placement procedures to align syllabi and practice with the edTPA portfolio assessment requirements. The goal is to ensure that Hofstra graduates are prepared to teach from the first day they walk into their own classrooms. “Due to the fact that I work with special education students, I am always working with UDL [Universal Design for Learning] principles and differentiation,” Lathrop said. “These were topics that Hofstra stressed, and without my knowledge of these, I am not sure I would have gotten the position I have today.”
