Lubaina Haider was a frst-generation college student and the frst in her family to go into medicine. She fell in love with Hofstra during her visit to campus for an Admitted Student Day. “After speaking to the Biology Department professors, I knew that this would be my home. The professors at Hofstra are so supportive, and I knew if I worked hard, I’d accomplish my dreams.”

Lubaina has been passionate about biology since her freshman year at the Bronx High School of Science. Once she began studying at Hofstra, she selected community health as a minor. “As a physician, I will be serving my community, but that can only be done if I know the needs of the community.”

While at Hofstra, Lubaina participated in a prestigious Howard Hughes Medical Institute Fellowship, which allowed her to do research in microbiology and receive a stipend. She was also a clinical research intern at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research in the Cardiology Department, which led to an opportunity to shadow an interventional cardiologist. In addition, she was a research assistant and a teaching assistant in Hofstra’s Biology Department.

For Lubaina, giving back is important. As a student, she volunteered at Winthrop-University Hospital as a hospitality volunteer, and at the Parker Jewish Institute for Rehabilitation as an assistant occupational therapist. She was also an English and mathematics tutor at the Henry Viscardi School, which is a middle and high school for severely disabled children who require life-sustaining treatments throughout the day.

Lubaina graduated from Hofstra University in May 2017 and is currently attending SUNY Downstate Medical College.

Anthony Ramdhani was probably destined to go into fnance. As a kid, he read The Wall Street Journal several times a week to learn about the markets, and his father works in the feld. But it was his studies at the Frank G. Zarb School of Business that convinced him. “After taking several courses in fnance, I knew it was right for me.”

Anthony was drawn to the Zarb School because of its AACSB International accreditations, and when the school launched its dual-degree program with Dongbei University in China in 2016, he was all in.

“China’s impact on our global economy is important to know. When I heard that we’d travel to China and earn two degrees, I was sold on the program.” Anthony graduated with a degree in fnance from Hofstra and a degree in economics and global fnance from Dongbei.

Anthony interned with Pfzer in China, and with MetLife and the Forte Capital Group back home. As a student, he immersed himself in campus life as an orientation leader, resident assistant, and academic tutor, and he held leadership positions in the Association of Latino Professionals and Financial Management Association. As an Honors College student, Anthony belonged to Phi Eta Sigma, the nation’s oldest and largest honor society; Pi Kappa Delta, a public speaking and debate honor society; and Phi Sigma Tau, an international philosophy honor society.

Anthony’s real-world experience didn’t end with his internships. He was a consultant with Hofstra’s chapter of 180 Degrees Consulting, a worldwide student-driven consultancy program that works with nonproft organizations to help them thrive. In spring of his frst year, he served as a committee chair during the Hofstra Model United Nations Conference.

He also earned Bloomberg Essentials certifcation.

WE WILL KNOW YOUR NAME At the core of your college experience at Hofstra is individualized attention. Every student is assigned an academic advisor and a student fnancial services counselor. “I’m constantly surprised by those who ask the relevance of a liberal arts degree and a major like history,” says Professor Susan Yohn. “All one has to do is go down the list of Fortune 500 CEOs to see that most corporate and political leaders in this country have a liberal arts BA.” Professor Yohn says she loves teaching because “it’s completely unpredictable. Students always surprise me. They say things I’ve not anticipated, have great ideas that I couldn’t have planned for, and take classes in new directions.” Her classes are infuenced by her research in American social history, which has focused on gender, religion, and business. She has also developed several courses, one on Latinos in the United States and another on depressions/recessions, in response to student requests. It’s clear that her students love her classes as well: Graduating seniors voted her a 2011-12 Teacher of the Year.

Her courses are always evolving to refect current events. “Our world is not a static place. When you study history, you study change,” she says. “I want students to have insight into the history of the issues that preoccupy us today.” She recently introduced a course on the history of disaster to explore the social, political, and economic impact of natural disasters, especially in light of climate change.

Another new course looks at the history of surveillance: “I invite students to learn more about how we have documented individual identity. What purpose is served by ‘watching’ citizens?” Professor Yohn expected that history students, concerned about issues like privacy and civil rights, would enroll in the course, but she fnds that the subject has attracted students from across the University – from communications, the sciences, and business – all of whom see value in knowing more about the systems we’ve created to keep track of people.

While still a computer science student at Hofstra, Michael Seiman teamed up with classmate Carlton B. Hickman to begin selling advertisements on a handful of entertainment websites they had created together. The ad server they built in 2002 set new standards for the industry, and together they founded CPX Interactive, a progressive digital advertising company. The company has since been renamed Digital Remedy.

The company was soon named by Inc. magazine as one of the fastest growing privately held advertising and marketing companies in the United States, serving billions of online advertisements in more than 65 countries every day.

Michael, who is chief executive offcer and chairman at Digital Remedy, credits his education at Hofstra and the relationships he developed at the University for a portion of the success that his company achieved in its early days. “The small classes defnitely helped me keep a tighter focus and develop better relationships with the professors,” he says. “Hofstra provided a nice setting and well-rounded education that allowed me to prepare for a competitive environment.”

As part of Michael’s mission to give back, he established a philanthropic division at Digital Remedy that has contributed hundreds of millions of ad impressions across its vast network to causes such as the Save Darfur Coalition and the American Diabetes Association.

Digital Remedy also partnered with Hofstra University to sponsor an annual student entrepreneurship competition that awards $42,000 total prize money for the best concept and business plan.

“Growing up on Long Island and attending Hofstra University are both key elements that have helped make me what I am today. My own sense of entrepreneurship was honed by these experiences,” says Michael, who also serves on the Hofstra University Board of Trustees. “My hope is that this process kindles that same spirit in even a few future Hofstra alums and empowers them to become successful entrepreneurs in their own right.”

Hofstra also hosted the frst presidential debate of the most recent election cycle between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton on September 26, 2016. Hofstra University is the only university to ever host three consecutive presidential debates, which underscores our strong national presence, as well as our reputation as an international center for the study of the American presidency.

In February 2011 Luz Peña stood on the red carpet at the Academy Awards alongside veteran reporters interviewing A-list stars such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Mila Kunis, Russell Brand, and Mark Ruffalo. She earned the dream gig after she and fellow Hofstra student Philip Robibero won the national MTVu Oscars Red Carpet Correspondent Contest, creating a prize-winning video that beat out entries from dozens of other universities.

“The School of Communication was a huge aid in this process,” says Luz. She and Philip used equipment from the school’s award-winning radio station, flmed around campus, and even brought Hofstra equipment onto the red carpet. “My journalism classes also played a defning role in preparing me for that moment.”

Luz, a journalism and political science double major, was named an Ailes Rising Apprentice, winning a $10,000 scholarship and paid summer internship with Fox News.

She parlayed that opportunity into a full-time job with Fox. Luz is currently working as a video journalist for Univision Communications Inc. “I’m living my dream,” she says. “I set a goal to return to the Oscars as a professional reporter, and two years later, I was reporting from the show, interviewing celebrities and winners.”

Luz is a fve-time Emmy Award-winning journalist and the recipient of a 2014 Southern California Journalists Award from the Los Angeles Press Club. She believes that her undergraduate course work, internships and hands-on experience in facilities such as the NewsHub – The Lawrence Herbert School of Communication’s modern converged multimedia newsroom – prepared her to get ahead in her industry. She credits her teachers and mentors with her success too: “The professors at Hofstra were most encouraging and were always available to help me grow as a student and journalist.”

“For me, the focus is not really on getting kids to play games,” says Professor Roberto Joseph. “My focus is on getting kids to make games, and on the learning that comes with that. We want to take them from consumers to producers of technology.”

Professor Joseph strives to create educational games that capture the imaginations of students from a variety of backgrounds, particularly underrepresented children who attend urban schools.

With the help of two Hofstra students, he has developed two apps, TOPS and Circuit Math, which teach elementary-age students basic math skills.

But the best way to develop math apps that are relevant to students, Professor Joseph says, is for the children to do it themselves. “We’ve done tons of research around playing games. Now the direction is more: What does it look like when kids create games?” he says.

Toward that end, he was awarded a $1.2 million grant from the National Science Foundation to support his iDesign project, a partnership between Hofstra and 10 middle schools in New York City and Long Island that engages 450 sixth through ninth graders and their teachers in after-school game design clubs.

Professor Joseph also launched Hofstra’s MathApps Saturday Academy, a game design program for local middle and high school students that was supported by a $30,000 grant from the Motorola Solutions Foundation’s Innovation Generation Grant Program. “[Kids] live in the game world. They know this stuff. That part isn’t diffcult,” he says. He stresses to his students the importance of targeting issues that kids fnd meaningful. “We want kids to make games that come from what’s happening in their lives now,” which will keep them engaged and enhance their learning experiences.

FM, Radio Hofstra University, which was named the No. 1 college radio station by The Princeton Review (2015, 2016), is the only noncommercial radio station in the United States to earn two Marconi Awards from the National Association of Broadcasters (2017, 2014).
