THE RIGHT PROGRAM School of Education

The School of Education comprises the departments of Teaching, Learning and Technology Programs and Specialized Programs in Education. Undergraduates carry a full co-major in an academic area in addition to the education courses necessary for initial certification in early childhood, childhood and secondary education. There are also five-year dual-degree programs, which allow you to earn both an undergraduate and graduate degree in less time than if each degree was pursued separately, which may save you the cost of one or more semesters of tuition.

Key features include small class size, individual mentoring, a dedicated curriculum library and field placement opportunities. Fellowships are also available for those who will teach mathematics or science in high-needs areas. You’ll interact with nationally recognized, well-published faculty who will prepare you – using the highly interactive multimedia resources of Hagedorn Hall, which is home to the

School of Education – to meet the requirements to sit for the New York state exams for initial teacher certification, including the Academic Literacy Skills Test, Educating All Students Test, Content Specialty Tests and Teacher Performance Assessment (edTPA).

Year after year, the edTPA pass rate for Hofstra students is significantly higher than the unofficial statewide average.

The School of Education, within the Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, offers undergraduate programs that will nurture your communication, collaboration and leadership skills while preparing you for teacher certification or a career as an education professional. Whether you want to work with children, adolescents or adults, you will participate in meaningful field assignments and observations early on in your studies as you learn to become an advocate for those you teach and serve.

School of Education undergraduates can also rely on high-quality, comprehensive career services from Hofstra University’s Career Center. Career counselors help students build strong resumes and secure valuable internships as well as jobs after graduation.

Career Center services and resources include one-on-one appointments with career counselors, access to thousands of job and internship postings, career fairs, on-campus recruitment programs, career-related webshops, mock interviews, resume and cover letter writing, and online management of recommendation letters.

In addition, Hofstra University’s Joan and Arnold Saltzman Community Services Center provides on-campus experiential learning opportunities at its Diane Lindner-Goldberg Child Care Institute, an early education center for children aged 8 weeks through pre-K, and the Reading/Writing Learning Clinic, which provides literacy support for children and adults.
