MEANT TO BE

Jump-Start YOUR FUTURE Choosing to earn your degree at Hofstra University is one of the best decisions you will ever make. Hofstra offers everything you’re looking for: an affordable, world-class private education; an engaged campus community; a proven track record of internship and job placement; and state-of-the-art resources. All the tools you need to jump-start a bright, fulfilling future are at your disposal. With about 155 undergraduate programs in the liberal arts and sciences, business, communication, engineering, education, and health professions and human services, you’re sure to find one that’s right for you. Plus, with more than 100 dual degree programs available in these areas, you can earn both an undergraduate and graduate degree while saving time and money. 2

During his time at Hofstra, physics major Bassir Caravan left his mark both on and off campus. He’s dined at the White House twice, is the first author on a premier international physics journal article, and is a Phi Beta Kappa Book Award recipient. Bassir humbly attributes his success to his professors. “My professors at Hofstra were instrumental simply by always being available to me. Whether it was about advice for my future or about research/work opportunities, the professors were very accessible,” he says. Bassir first caught the attention of the White House in 2012 with a candid letter he sent to the president, expressing gratitude to a country that has allowed his immigrant parents and four siblings to “freely pursue our dearest passions and dreams.” He was invited to the White House to participate in a Pashtun-American round-table discussion in 2013 and was invited back in 2014 for the annual Iftar dinner – which represents the breaking of the fast in the Islamic holy month of Ramadan – and he was seated at the president’s table. But it’s science, not statesmanship, that drives Bassir. He is the first author – a very significant achievement for an undergraduate – with Hofstra physics professor Dr. Gregory Levine on a collaborative journal article published in Physical Review A. He also collaborated with Dr. Levine on research projects about quantum charge fluctuations in disordered systems, and quantum field theory and gravity. “Dr. Levine has been an important part of my success, and his mentorship enabled me to really shine,” Bassir says. In addition, “Hofstra’s relatively small class sizes really allow students to take advantage of the wealth of resources at this university,” he says. Bassir, who also worked as a peer tutor, is attending medical school. Bassir says, “I hope to balance a career of medical research and clinical medicine.”

For accounting major Brandon Hannan, a career change came quite early in life. Having acted since he was a toddler, appearing in commercials, independent films and, most notably, as Vito Spatafore Jr. on HBO’s The Sopranos, Brandon was ready for a change. Recognizing his penchant for numbers and Hofstra’s reputation for accounting, he set his sights on the Frank G. Zarb School of Business. “I knew that I would be taken good care of in that school; I knew I would be in the best of hands.” Brandon, a Provost’s Scholar who was enrolled in the BBA in Accounting/MS in Taxation dual degree program, took his first accounting class in his sophomore year with Dr. Jacqueline Burke. “Dr. Burke taught my Accounting 101 class and right away challenged me and the other students,” he says. She introduced students to PricewaterhouseCoopers’ xACT competition. “By competing in the event, I was able to apply the basics that I learned in class as well as experience firsthand how team oriented accounting really is.” Brandon values his professors’ emphasis on preparing students for life after college. “The case studies and company projects [Dr. Elizabeth Venuti] assigned made me think outside the box and helped me learn real-life aspects of accounting and what a day would look like on the job,” he says. “Dr. [Andrew] Spieler opened my eyes to the world of finance. His in-depth knowledge of just about every aspect of the field was so fascinating that it became contagious. Every class, test or project required critical thinking, and I was able to walk out, every single day, learning something new and meaningful.” Brandon participated in a Hofstra program in which he visited multiple firms on Long Island to see how they incorporate accounting into their business practices. Currently, Brandon is interning at Deloitte while he completes the MS in Taxation program, and will work there full time upon graduating in May. He has also interned at wealth management firm Bessemer Trust, where he generated tax returns and learned the tax code directly from senior management. As he prepares for the future, Brandon looks back on his experiences at the Hofstra Career Center. “This was by far the most important aspect of the University for me,” he says. Armed with many resume critiques, mock interviews, advice and career opportunities, he’s ready to raise the curtain on his next act. 4

We Will KNOW YOUR NAME At the core of your college experience at Hofstra is individualized attention. Every student is assigned an academic advisor and a Student Financial Services counselor. You will also be mentored by a professor who teaches in your major and who will guide you as you plan for your career. And unlike public universities where huge lecture halls are filled with hundreds of students, the average undergraduate class size at Hofstra is just 21, and the student-to-faculty ratio is 13-to-1. You will get to know your professors and classmates, and they will get to know you.

“I’m constantly surprised by those who ask the relevance of a liberal arts degree and a major like history,” says Professor Susan Yohn. “All one has to do is go down the list of Fortune 500 CEOs to see that most corporate and political leaders in this country have a liberal arts BA.” Professor Yohn says she loves teaching because “it’s completely unpredictable. Students always surprise me. They say things I’ve not anticipated, have great ideas that I couldn’t have planned for, and take classes in new directions.” Her classes are influenced by her research in American social history, which has focused on gender, religion and business. She has also developed several courses, one on Latinos in the United States and another on depressions/recessions, in response to student requests. It’s clear that her students love her classes as well: graduating seniors voted her a 2011-12 Teacher of the Year. Her courses are always evolving to reflect current events. “Our world is not a static place. When you study history, you study change,” she says. “I want students to have insight into the history of the issues that preoccupy us today.” She recently introduced a course on the history of disaster to explore the social, political and economic impact of natural disasters, especially in light of climate change. Another new course looks at the history of surveillance: “I invite students to learn more about how we have documented individual identity. What purpose is served by ‘watching’ citizens?” Professor Yohn expected that history students, concerned about issues like privacy and civil rights, would enroll in the course, but she finds that the subject has attracted students from across the University – from communications, the sciences and business – all of whom see value in knowing more about the systems we’ve created to keep track of people.

“All one has to do is go down the list of Fortune 500 CEOs to see that most corporate and political leaders in this country have a liberal arts BA.”

While still a computer science student at Hofstra, Michael Seiman teamed up with classmate Carlton B. Hickman to begin selling advertisements on a handful of entertainment websites they had created together. The ad server they built in 2002 set new standards for the industry, and together they founded CPX Interactive, a progressive digital advertising company. The company was soon named by Inc. magazine as one of the fastest growing privately held advertising and marketing companies in the United States, serving billions of online advertisements in more than 65 countries every day. Michael, who is chief executive officer at CPXi, credits his education at Hofstra and the relationships he developed at the University for a portion of the success that his company achieved in its early days. “The small classes definitely helped me keep a tighter focus and develop better relationships with the professors,” he says. “Hofstra provided a nice setting and well-rounded education that allowed me to prepare for a competitive environment.” As part of Michael’s mission to give back, he established a philanthropic division at CPXi that has contributed hundreds of millions of ad impressions across its vast network to causes such as the Save Darfur Coalition and the American Diabetes Association. CPXi also recently partnered with Hofstra University to sponsor a student entrepreneurship competition that awards $100,000 total prize money for the best concept and business plan. “Growing up on Long Island and attending Hofstra University are both key elements that have helped make me what I am today. My own sense of entrepreneurship was honed by these experiences,” says Michael, who also serves on the Hofstra University Board of Trustees. “My hope is that this process kindles that same spirit in even a few future Hofstra alums and empowers them to become successful entrepreneurs in their own right.” 8

Employers praise the quality of Hofstra interns and often hire them upon graduation. Throughout your time at Hofstra, our Career Center’s comprehensive services help you become a polished, confident graduate. You will be coached in résumé and cover letter writing, benefit from one-on-one career counseling, do mock interviews, and participate in job fairs, on-campus recruitment programs, and career-related webshop classes. A RISING STAR With students from 46 U.S. states and 67 countries, Hofstra University enjoys a growing national and international reputation as a university preparing the next generation of leaders. We’re the only private university on Long Island recognized by every major college ranking, including The Princeton Review’s Best Colleges, Fiske Guide, Colleges of Distinction, U.S. News & World Report’s National Universities and Forbes’ Most Entrepreneurial Universities. In recent years we’ve opened the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine, and we’ve expanded our undergraduate and graduate program offerings with the creation of the School of Engineering and Applied Science, School of Health Professions and Human Services, and the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Graduate Nursing and Physician Assistant Studies. We’ve attracted top-tier scholars and researchers as deans and faculty who are creating outstanding new educational models built on our existing strengths. In fact, Hofstra University is one of only three colleges in the New York metropolitan area to have schools of medicine, engineering and law. Faculty across all disciplines are regularly called on by national and local media to weigh in as experts on the important issues of the day. Four former U.S. presidents have spoken at Hofstra, and President Barack Obama came to our campus twice when Hofstra hosted presidential debates in 2008 and 2012. Hofstra University is one of only two schools selected to host such debates in back-to-back election years, which underscores our strong national presence, as well as our reputation as an international center for the study of the American presidency.

In February 2011 Luz Peña stood on the red carpet at the Academy Awards alongside veteran reporters interviewing A-list stars such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Mila Kunis, Russell Brand and Mark Ruffalo. She earned the dream gig after she and fellow Hofstra student Philip Robibero won the national MTVu Oscars Red Carpet Correspondent Contest, creating a prize-winning video that beat out entries from dozens of other universities. “The School of Communication was a huge aid in this process,” says Luz. She and Philip used equipment from the school’s award-winning radio station, filmed around campus, and even brought Hofstra equipment onto the red carpet. “My journalism classes also played a defining role in preparing me for that moment.” Later that year, Luz, a journalism and political science double major, was named an Ailes Rising Apprentice, winning a $10,000 scholarship and paid summer internship with Fox News. She parlayed that opportunity into a full-time job with Fox. Luz is currently working as a video journalist for Univision Communications, Inc. “I’m living my dream,” she says. “I set a goal to return to the Oscars as a professional reporter, and two years later, I was reporting from the show, interviewing celebrities and winners.” She believes that her undergraduate course work, internships and hands-on experience in facilities such as the NewsHub, The Lawrence Herbert School of Communication’s modern converged multimedia newsroom, prepared her to get ahead in her industry. She credits her teachers and mentors with her success too: “The professors at Hofstra were most encouraging and were always available to help me grow as a student and journalist.”

“For me, the focus is not really on getting kids to play games,” says Professor Roberto Joseph. “My focus is on getting kids to make games, and on the learning that comes behind that. We want to take them from consumers to producers of technology.” Professor Joseph strives to create educational games that capture the imaginations of students from a variety of backgrounds, particularly minority children who attend urban schools. With the help of two Hofstra students, he has developed two apps, TOPS and Circuit Math, which teach elementary-age students basic math skills. But the best way to develop math apps that are relevant to students, Professor Joseph says, is for the children to do it themselves. “We’ve done tons of research around playing games. Now the direction is more: What does it look like when kids create games?” he says. Toward that end, he was awarded a $1.2 million grant from the National Science Foundation to support his iDesign project, a partnership between Hofstra and 10 middle schools in New York City and Long Island that engaged 450 sixth through ninth graders and their teachers in after-school game design clubs. Professor Joseph also launched Hofstra’s MathApps Saturday Academy, a game design program for local middle and high school students that was supported by a $30,000 grant from the Motorola Solutions Foundation’s Innovation Generation Grant Program. “[Kids] live in the game world. They know this stuff. That part isn’t difficult,” he says. He stresses to his students the importance of targeting issues that kids find meaningful. “We want kids to make games that come from what’s happening in their lives now,” which will keep them engaged and will enhance their learning experiences.

“My focus is on getting kids to make games, and on the learning that comes behind that. We want to take them from consumers to producers of technology.”
