Medicine and Research Our affiliation and faculty connection to The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory offer unlimited opportunities to all of our students to conduct basic and translational investigations in immunology, neuroscience, sepsis and many other specialty areas, including cancer and genetics.

Each year, the School of Medicine admits four MD/PhD students who, over seven to eight years, complete both the MD degree program requirements and the requirements for awarding of the PhD in the Molecular Basis of Medicine. In addition, at least 70 percent of our students engage in summer research after the first year of study, and nearly 100 percent do so by graduation.

All medical students benefit from exposure to the extensive resources of the School of Medicine, The Feinstein Institute, and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory — a collaboration that equips students for the accelerating pace of medical research and scientific discovery in the years ahead.

Medical School Facility Just 25 miles from Manhattan on Hofstra University’s 240-acre campus, the School of Medicine main complex features a 113,000-square-foot facility complete with ultramodern classrooms and quiet study areas, two large lecture halls, a health sciences library, and structure laboratory offering state-of-the-art communication and medical technology.

Launched in 2008, Hofstra University and North Shore-LIJ Health System are partners in the establishment and operation of the School of Medicine, an institution built upon the strong clinical and graduate medical education programs of the Health System and the robust research and academic programs of Hofstra University and The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research at North Shore-LIJ Health System.

This dynamic collaboration offers highly motivated and academically talented prospective physicians the opportunity to study medicine within an innovative curriculum that integrates academic course content with hands-on clinical experiences throughout the four-year program.

In this new model of physician education, science, humanism, communication skills, clinical decision-making, and respect for patients are emphasized throughout the four-year program — starting on the first day of medical training.

The faculty of the School of Medicine includes nationally and internationally recognized medical educators, clinicians and scientists who represent diverse specialties and a wide range of interests.

Unlike other institutions, the School of Medicine offers a uniquely distinct Science Education Department devoted solely to the teaching of the biomedical and biopsychosocial sciences.

The School of Medicine emphasizes clinical experience and case-based learning that work to enhance problem-solving and critical thinking skills.

The innovative curriculum:

• Faculty members are leaders in clinical skills education and research, and are engaged in a variety of community service endeavors.

• Faculty open-door policy creates an accessible and collegial environment and reflects professors’ engagement with their students.

In addition, School of Medicine faculty and other Health System professionals are actively involved in the planning and delivery of lectures and laboratory sessions, offering students access to the Health System’s clinical practitioners and full spectrum of School of Medicine faculty.

Students Motivated Learners Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine students are adult, independent learners with a passion for humanistic medicine. Students in attendance represent nearly 25 states and over 80 colleges/ universities, including the top 20 undergraduate institutions in the United States. Representing all walks of life, our student body is a true reflection of the country’s growing diversity.

The success of our first class of newly minted physicians (Class of 2015) is proof that our approach to medical education is working. In March 2015, our seniors were 100 percent matched to residency programs in the nation’s largest-ever National Match Day, with many securing spots within the most highly competitive institutions in the United States and all pursuing a wide range of specialty areas.

• Encourages active learning and teamwork from day one, including training first-year students as EMTs within the first two months of medical school.

• Is based on eight core competencies to measure student achievement:

• Medical knowledge • Patient care • Interpersonal skills/communication • Professionalism • Practice-based learning and improvement • Systems-based practice • Research and scholarship • Population health

Students also participate in community outreach efforts such as assisting with food preparation and serving meals at local shelters, teaching second and third grade students about hand-washing and healthy living, fundraising for childhood cancer, women’s heart health and other wellness initiatives, as well as mentoring young people in our Medical Scholars Pipeline Program — a summer learning opportunity at the School of Medicine for high school students from groups underrepresented in medicine.
