About Us …

We are a thriving community of students, faculty and clinical staff dedicated to improving the lives of people with communication disorders. Our department and clinic are committed to providing students quality academic and clinical experiences to prepare them for advanced study and a career in the science of human communication and its disorders.

Happy Fall Semester! I am delighted to welcome our new first-year and transfer speech majors to Hofstra and, of course, so happy to see our returning students again.

I am also excited to write this welcome note for our department’s first newsletter! This is a brand-new initiative for us.

We are hoping this newsletter will keep our students well informed of what’s going on in our department. We also hope to provide you with enriching articles and the latest news in speech-pathology and audiology.

Welcome Graduate Students I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the Department of Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences at Hofstra University and to share with you some important facts about our graduate program.

Our graduate program in speech-language pathology is accredited by the Council of Academic Accreditation (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). The curriculum is a rich and diverse one. Course work is supplemented by clinical experiences both on campus at the Saltzman Center and off campus at numerous externship sites throughout the community. Speech-language graduate students also have the opportunity to complete two additional advanced certifications: the Advanced Certificate in Teacher of Students With Speech-language Disabilities (TSSLD) and the Advanced Certificate in Bilingual Extension for Speech-Language Pathology.

Our professional doctorate in Audiology is designed to meet the requirements for certification by ASHA. As part of the Long Island Doctor of Audiology Consortium, graduate students in audiology complete their academic training across three universities and are provided with comprehensive clinical training across a variety of settings that include medical centers, public schools, special education facilities and clinics.

Our outstanding faculty is well-known for their expertise in various areas within the field. They have published textbooks, clinical materials and original research.

Moreover, our faculty is committed to excellence in teaching, as well as getting to know you on an individual basis. Our clinical staff is exceptional and provides expert supervision to guide your clinical experiences.

In addition to the Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic at the Saltzman Center, we also have several labs located in Davison Hall; the Speech and Hearing Science Laboratory, the Psycholinguistics Laboratory, the Child Language Development Lab and the Language and Literacy Lab. These labs are equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation. Guided laboratory instruction is an important part of the curriculum.

We are excited about the coming year and look forward to getting to know each of you in the classroom and as graduate student clinicians.

A Word From Wendy Silverman, MS, CCC-SLP, Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic Director Welcome to the Hofstra University Speech-LanguageHearing Clinic. The clinic is staffed by New York state licensed and ASHA certified speech-language pathologists and audiologists and support staff. Our training program offers undergraduate and graduate students attending Hofstra University’s Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology programs an intensive immersion in clinical practice under the supervision of highly experienced speech-language and audiology professionals.

The Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic provides high-quality assessment and treatment of communication disorders to individuals of all ages. The clinic serves clients with diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds from the Hofstra University community, the surrounding communities and school districts, and areas of Queens, Nassau and Suffolk Counties within an approximately 50-mile radius.

The clinic is located in the Joan and Arnold Saltzman Community Services Center on the South Campus. The Saltzman Center joins the talents and capabilities of five separate organizations to support the two closely coupled objectives of its mission-education of our students and service in support of the health and well-being of the community.

Some specialty clinics include:

Speaking of Toddlers, which is a language stimulation group for preschoolers. Through developmentally appropriate play, sensory-based activities, and snack/ craft/story time, children develop vocabulary and social communication skills. Language facilitation strategies, peer-to-peer interactions in small group settings, and parent training are used to achieve each child’s individual language/communication goals.

Aphasia Program. Aphasia is an acquired communication disorder that impairs a person’s ability to process language. Individual treatment, designed to assist in the recovery of speech, language, reading, writing and functional communication, is provided at the clinic.

Group therapy is employed to support individual treatment, and to provide opportunities for social participation. The program also includes a group for caregivers of people with aphasia.

Some community-based projects include:

•

Language stimulation groups at the Saltzman Community Services Center’s Diane Lindner-Goldberg Child Care Institute (CCI). Through this program, infants, toddlers and preschoolers enrolled at CCI participate in communication and literacy enrichment activities that include storytelling, music, crafts and creative play.

The goals of the program are to increase social communication skills, promote academic readiness and reduce risks for language-learning difficulties.

•

Language-literacy support program at an area elementary school. This project provides language-literacy support for kindergarteners at a local elementary school who are at high risk for developing language-literacy disorders. The instructional method uses an explicit, sequential approach to promote letter identification and phonological awareness.

A response-to-intervention (RTI) approach is utilized to identify those individuals who may require further evaluation of language-literacy abilities.

The Speech-Language Hearing Clinic participates in equitable treatment practices in accordance with the ASHA Code of Ethics and the Scope of Practice in Speech-Language Pathology.

Faculty Focus: Jason Davidow, PhD

Dr. Davidow analyzes pressure and airflow waveforms for research about speech production changes during fluency-inducing conditions.

Dr. Jason H. Davidow earned a BA in psychology in 1998 from the University of California-Santa Barbara, and an MA and PhD in communication sciences and disorders from the University of Georgia Dr. Davidow teaches Anatomy and Physiology of Speech (SPCH 006), Fluency Disorders (SPCH 230), Research Design (SPCH 207), Introduction to Communication Disorders (SPCH 131), and Exploring the Communication Sciences (SPCH 009).

Hofstra’s emphasis on excellence in teaching is one reason for Dr. Davidow accepting a position at the University.

Dr. Davidow particularly enjoys the challenge of making courses with historically “dry” material (e.g., Research Design and Anatomy & Physiology) interesting and fun.

Dr. Davidow’s main research interests include stuttering treatment outcome and the measurement of speech production changes during fluency-inducing conditions (speaking styles that temporarily eliminate, or substantially reduce, moments of stuttering) in persons who stutter. A major goal of Dr. Davidow’s research is to understand the cause of fluency during the production of several of the most powerful fluency-inducing conditions (e.g., singing, speaking to the beat of a metronome, and chorus reading) and use that information to improve stuttering treatments. A new area of inquiry for Dr. Davidow is anticipation in stuttering. Dr. Davidow and a colleague at the University of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, are trying to map the neural correlates for the prediction of stuttering moments.

Dr. Davidow is also active in the local community. He is currently co-director of the National Stuttering Association (NSA) Long Island teen chapter, and organizer and member of the NSA Long Island adult chapter. The NSA is a non-profit organization that provides support to, and advocates for, persons who stutter. In addition, he is a member of a group on Long Island for speech-language pathology professionals who stutter. Dr. Davidow has stuttered since his preschool years and desires to help others overcome the behavioral, social, emotional, and cognitive challenges that he faced when he was younger.

Student Spotlight: Megan Conway “ The ability to communicate is at the heart of one’s life experiences.”

This profound statement became a reality through my own personal experiences with my young cousin and his struggle with communicating that caused heartbreaking anguish for our family.

It was the unrelenting challenges, emotional struggles and fears that were ultimately the deciding factor in pursuing a career in speech-language pathology. Speech-language therapy has enabled my cousin, diagnosed with dysarthria and PDD-NOS, to make vast improvements in communicating.

A life-changing moment for me was when my cousin heard his voice for the first time as a smile beamed across his face. Through tears of joy and heart-pounding excitement, our family knew in that instant, that there was hope. This was a moment of clarity that not only changed his life, but also mine. I knew that speech-language therapy could provide the key to open the doors to communication, the heart of one’s life experiences.

My first step in pursuing a degree in speech-language pathology began at Molloy College. Molloy provided a solid background in clinical experiences as I expanded my knowledge with clients with a myriad of disorders, including articulation, feeding and autism. As my clinical experiences grew, so did my enthusiasm to take the steps to become a professional in the field so that I could provide the best possible treatment and care for individuals and their families who face these challenges.

After researching graduate programs, I set my heart on Hofstra University’s graduate program due to their reputation of high standards for clinical work, educators, and preparation to meet professional challenges in the field. During my first year in the graduate program at Hofstra I have not only gained tremendous strides in my knowledge in speech-language pathology, but also

learned the importance of teamwork and collaboration that will be carried over into my professional career.

Communication disorders often are the result of several impairments and, in turn, require a collaboration of professionals to move toward goals. Through the multitude and in-depth clinical settings experienced at Hofstra I have learned that no one of us is as smart as all of us. It is through Hofstra’s teamwork approach that I have been provided with the communication skills needed to provide the best care for my clients.

At Hofstra, challenges have been overcome, not only in clinical experiences, but also in my own life. I continually find myself going back to the time that smile beamed across my cousin’s face and the light in the eyes of our family when he uttered his first words. Hofstra has made that light inside of me shine brighter as my knowledge in speech-language pathology grows, as does my compassion and understanding of the struggles clients and their families face. I have the confidence to be compassionate, empathetic and patient with clients, and have developed my own unique way to be supportive, observant and objective with each client. My words of wisdom to new incoming students in speech-language pathology is that although the first year of graduate studies is often challenging, learn how to balance the stressful moments with the attitude I take into each clinical experience: Remember to emphasize what one CAN do, instead of what one cannot do. Each step you take is one step closer to a goal, a beaming smile across a child’s face and the light of hope in a family’s eyes.

Communication is the key to success, and Hofstra will give you the opportunity to open even more doors knowing that when you light the path for others, you light your own way too.

NSSLHA members raise awareness for “May Is Better Hearing and Speech Month” in the Mack Student Center.

Hi Everyone!

My name is Emily Robbin, and I am this year’s president of the Hofstra University chapter of NSSLHA. NSSLHA is an acronym for the National Student-Speech-LanguageHearing Association. We are a Hofstra University campus club, recognized by the Hofstra University Student Government Association (SGA).

We are also a certified chapter of our National Organization. Our club works closely with the Speech-LanguageHearing Sciences Department along with the Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic in the Joan and Arnold Saltzman Community Services Center, located on Hofstra’s campus. We have an amazing group that not only focuses on speech, language and audiology activities, but also on community service, such as visiting children in hospitals, reading books to kindergarten children in a local elementary school, and participating in “walks” supporting autism

awareness and other similar organizations. NSSLHA fundraises for the Hofstra University Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic.

The money collected helps many clients who need assistance in paying for services.

This year we will continue our endeavors to expand our club and increase our goals from the year before! In particular, this year we have a new goal; we hope to organize and encourage members to attend the 2013 American SpeechLanguage-Hearing Association’s (ASHA) annual convention in Chicago! This has never been done before and certainly will be a big step forward for Hofstra’s NSSLHA chapter. We have expanded from being an undergraduate club, to also including our graduate students.

Although they are very busy, those who have joined have made a positive impact on our club, and taught our undergraduate students so much about their future careers in speech-language pathology and audiology. NSSLHA also extends a warm welcome to those students who are not in the major, but want to participate in our events, and make new friends in a wonderful community. I am looking forward to making this year’s NSSLHA experience amazing and better than ever!

We are looking forward to the new academic year and welcome you to become a part of our club. Look for our article each semester in this newsletter to find out what we’ve been up to!

Student Academy of Audiology (SAA) The moderator of the LI AUD chapter is Dr. Ianthe Murad. LI AUD SAA members volunteer in a variety of settings, including: Health Fairs School Fairs Walk for Hearing March of Dimes Special Olympics Fundraisers Members of the LI AUD chapter of the Student Academy of Audiology.

The LI AUD chapter of SAA was chartered in 2009.

Since then, they have participated in several communitybased programs that help raise hearing awareness.

The chapter also speaks to elementary through high school students about hearing protection and careers in AUD. LI AUD SAA has raised more than $5,000 toward scholarship donations to benefit Deaf high school students entering college and to support university clients in need of stipends to receive clinic services.

Recent Saa Events: Special Olympics, 6/2/13

West Islip High School Visit, 4/26/13 SAA members Rebecca Langer, Lisa Mener, Carin McNiff, Kelly Donlan, and Brittany Renee visited West Islip High School and presented topics in audiology to 22 students.

The presentation included PowerPoint slides and video clips, and discussed topics such as:

The anatomy of the auditory pathway The production of sound How hearing loss occurs Symptoms and the impact of hearing loss The audiogram Degrees and types of hearing loss

The AUD students also spoke in detail about the profession of audiology and what is in the scope of practice of an audiologist, including:

• Places of work • Diagnostic testing • Rehabilitation • Hearing aids and cochlear implants • Communicating with the hearing impaired • Deafness and Deaf culture • How ASL can help the profession of audiology After the PowerPoint presentation, the SAA members answered questions and instructed the students on how to do a hearing screening/use the hearing screeners.

The class ended by having the students perform hearing screenings on each other.

Special Olympics is the largest global public health organization dedicated to serving individuals with intellectual disabilities, SAA moderator Dr. Murad (seated left) poses with fellow SAA students at the providing free health Special Olympics event. screenings and health information to Special Olympics athletes at local, regional and world games.

Volunteers at Special Olympics Healthy Hearing (SOHH) events perform hearing screenings on the Special Olympics athletes, educate the athletes about their hearing, and make medical referrals when appropriate.

The LI AUD consortium chapter of SAA was invited this year to participate in the NY Special Olympics for Healthy Hearing on June 2, 2013. There were more than 500 athletes from across the metro area, and many of them were screened by the AUD students.

Walk4hearing, 9/29/13 Since 2006, the Walk4Hearing has raised more than $6 million and has become the largest walk program for people with hearing SAA members pose together at Riverside loss taking place in Park at the 2013 Walk4Hearing event. multiple cities across the United States. Money raised from the Walk4Hearing is split between the local walk site’s community and the national organization. All are encouraged to join the walk and raise awareness about hearing loss, help to eradicate the stigma associated with it, and raise funds to provide information and support for people with hearing loss.

Twenty-two Long Island AuD students participated this year in the NYC Walk4Hearing, and helped raise $1,000 for the cause.

Department News New Dual Degree Program

We are happy to announce that our department now has a SpeechLanguage-Hearing Sciences (BA) and Speech-Language Pathology (MA) Dual Degree Program. Following is a list of eligibility requirements as outlined in the Hofstra Bulletin:

For those who are interested in applying for this program, please schedule an appointment with your faculty advisor. We encourage only the students who are interested in Hofstra as their first (and only) choice for graduate school to pursue this option.

ASHA Convention

The ASHA Convention is the premier annual event for speech-language pathologists, audiologists and speech, language, and hearing scientists.

Bringing together more than 12,000 attendees, the annual convention provides you with a once-a-year opportunity to learn about the latest evidence-based research, polish clinical skills, improve techniques, and gain new tools and resources to advance professional development.

Chicago, the third-largest city in the United States, provides a rich array of cultural events and cuisines to be enjoyed.

The 2013 ASHA Convention theme is The Magic of Teamwork: Science and Service Delivery. Magical moments impact our lives as we strive to improve the lives of individuals experiencing communication disorders through modern science and innovative, evidence-based practices.

Join your colleagues for the comprehensive programming, cutting-edge education, and energized atmosphere of the ASHA Convention! for program information, meeting with a faculty member, taking a tour of the speech clinic, and sitting in on one or more of your daytime classes.

Students and their guests will sign in at the Speech Office, 106 Davison Hall, for the opportunity to receive a gift from the department.

Field Experience in Communication Disorders (SPCH 160) This course serves as a field experience in communication disorders for our undergraduate students provided under the guidance of an instructor and a speech-language pathologist or audiologist who will serve as the mentor in the field. Through this field experience, students will be exposed to the roles and responsibilities of speech-language pathologists and audiologists in either a health-care or educational setting.

Must be a declared SPCH major and must have completed SPCH 5A, 6, 9, 10, 102A, 131 and 137, with an overall GPA of 3.0, and a departmental GPA of 3.3.

Students must apply by November 15 for the following spring semester, or April 15 for the following fall semester. There are no summer internships.

When the application is approved, students then register for SPCH 160 (Field Experience in Communication Disorders), a 1 s.h. course.

Students may accrue observation hours, but may not use experiences for clinical clock hours.

Grades are based on both academic and on-site work. An on-site evaluation of “poor” results in a maximum grade of C. This course may not be used toward meeting a major or minor requirement.

Interested students must submit the “Application for Field Experience in Communication Disorders,” available on Blackboard and in the department office,

by November 15.

Sigma Pi

In Other News …

Sigma Pi is an honor society open to our matriculated undergraduate students who have achieved excellence in their studies at Hofstra University.

Students must complete an application in order to be considered for eligibility.

Students who meet the following requirements are eligible for consideration:

Dr. Sheila H. Bernstein, adjunct assistant professor, presented a poster, The Effect of a Therapy Dog on the Language Complexity of Preschoolers, at the 2013 convention of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the International Association of Animal-Human Interaction Organizations (IAHAIO), in Chicago this past July. Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) is “a goal-directed intervention in which an animal that meets specific criteria is an integral part of the treatment process.” (Delta Society).

AAT is directed or delivered by licensed professionals with specialized expertise, and within the scope of practice of their profession. AAT is designed to promote improvement in human physical, social, emotional, and/or cognitive functioning. AAT is provided in a variety of settings and may be group or individually administered. The key features of AAT include specified goals and objectives for each individual and measurement of progress.

The study quantitatively measured the effect of the presence of a certified therapy dog and handler team on the language of typically developing 3-year-olds during low-structured play.

Five typically developing 3-year-old children participated in two sessions, one without the dog, and with the therapy dog. Language samples were collected and analyzed using the SALT (Miller, & Chapman, 1985) and variety and frequency of illocutionary acts were calculated. All children showed a significant increase in mean length of utterance and variety of speech acts.
