Frank G. Zarb School of Business

The FRANK G. ZARB SCHOOL OF BUSINESS is one of only 10 percent of business schools in the United States with dual accreditation for its programs in business and accounting from AACSB International – The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Students gain hands-on experience in the Martin B. Greenberg Trading Room, where they have access to the same data, analytics and software used by finance professionals. Zarb students participate in a large number of student clubs and organizations and compete at events such as the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX) Open Outcry Trading Competition. Since 2007, Hofstra students have consistently taken top honors.

School of Communication

The SCHOOL OF COMMUNICATION boasts one of the largest noncommercial broadcast studios in the northeastern United States, as well as the Hofstra Media Hub, our converged newsroom and multimedia classroom. WRHU-88.7 FM (Radio Hofstra University) was the first college radio station in the United States to broadcast on SIRIUS Satellite Radio.

As with all programs at Hofstra, students in the School of Communication are encouraged to pursue internships to complement their academic study and make long-lasting career connections.

Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

HOFSTRA COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS AND SCIENCES is organized into four divisions – the Humanities, Natural Sciences (including mathematics, engineering and computer science), Social Sciences, and Interdisciplinary Programs. All Hofstra students choose from a variety of liberal arts core classes, each designed to complement their program of study. Students may also choose to add a minor or a second major.

How difficult is it to get into Hofstra?

Students admitted to Hofstra have an average SAT score of 1180 and grade point average of 3.4 out of 4.0.

The mid-range of SAT scores is 1110-1250. These scores do not include the SAT essay. Remember, we consider many factors when admitting students.

What are the minimum requirements for admission to Hofstra?

We consider all parts of your application. There are no minimum grades or scores, although our Admission Committee seeks students who have excelled academically, challenged themselves in course work, and pursued opportunities outside the classroom. A strong essay will complement your application well.

Is the TOEFL required for admission?

The TOEFL is required for any student who is not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and whose first language is not English. Unless otherwise noted, we require the TOEFL if your country of citizenship’s national language is not English. A score on the SAT or ACT that demonstrates proficiency in English may be substituted for the TOEFL, at the discretion of the Admission Committee.

What score is Hofstra looking for on the TOEFL? Our Admission Committee looks for students who have achieved an Internet-based TOEFL (IBT) score of 80 or higher, a paper-based TOEFL score of 550 or higher, or a computerized TOEFL score of 213 or higher.

Can I send my supporting documents (transcript, TOEFL score, essay) to Hofstra electronically?

Yes. E-mailing or faxing documents can be faster and more reliable than sending them by mail. Documents can be faxed to 516-463-5100 (please write “Attention International Admissions” on faxes) or e-mailed to InternationalAdmission@Hofstra.edu. Please note that to be considered official documents, transcripts or test scores should be sent by a counselor, adviser, administrator or other staff member at your school. We cannot accept test scores copied from an Internet score report.

What financial aid might international students receive?

International students are eligible for academic merit-based scholarships. Please note that an SAT or ACT score must be received in order to be considered for an academic scholarship.

How do I apply for a scholarship?

All students are automatically considered for academic merit scholarships, which are based primarily on your secondary school record and SAT or ACT results. The TOEFL is not a factor in scholarship decisions.

Does Hofstra offer conditional admission for students with lower TOEFL scores?

At this time, Hofstra does not offer conditional admission. For students who may need some help with their English language skills, you may be asked to participate in our English Language Program (ELP), which takes place concurrently with regular University course work. Students take an English language placement exam when they arrive at orientation, prior to registering for courses. Students are then advised to take appropriate course work.

Does Hofstra award credit for A-Levels, Abitur, the IB Diploma, AP credits, etc.?

Yes. Advanced standing and collegiate-level credits may be awarded based on students’ performance on these exams and certain other upper-secondary school certificates. Students should send score reports to the Office of Admission for evaluation. An official evaluation of a student’s secondary record is often helpful in this process and can be provided by organizations such as World Educational Services (WES).

Is housing provided for international students?

Yes! Hofstra has 37 residence halls, featuring many different living arrangements. Twelve-month housing is available for students who will stay in the United States during semester breaks. Living/Learning Communities, in which students live with other students who have similar majors or interests, are also available. Visit hofstra.edu/reslife for more information.

What can I do outside the classroom?

Hofstra has a vibrant campus – with more than 500 cultural events, more than 170 student clubs and organizations, and a competitive NCAA Division I athletic program. What if I prefer small classes, where the professors actually know me by name?

Then Hofstra is the perfect choice for you! Hofstra keeps class size small, averaging just 22 students, and a student-faculty ratio of 14-to-1 ensures that students receive the personal attention they need.

What if I ever need help, guidance or support at Hofstra?

We have excellent first-year programs designed to help you adjust to both the academic and social life of the University. Every Hofstra first-year student has a dedicated University adviser and faculty adviser, in addition to access to tutors and many other support services.

The Office of Orientation and Office of Student Leadership and Activities, as well as Hofstra’s Saltzman Community Services Center, are also available to students.

Where is Hofstra located, and what’s the weather like?

Hofstra’s campus is located in Hempstead, New York, about 40 kilometers east of Manhattan, in a suburban neighborhood. On a clear day, you can see the New York City skyline from the top level of our library! The climate of Long Island is affected by four seasonal changes. The temperature varies from a high of 32 degrees Celsius during July and August to a low of minus 2 degrees Celsius in January and February.

So Hofstra is near New York City. What can I do there?

What can’t you do there? New York is an amazing city. Sample thousands of restaurants. Visit museums, sports arenas, and art galleries.

See a Broadway show. Visit Top of the Rock. You could go to New York City every day for four years and still not see it all. Hofstra shuttle buses provide transportation to and from local train stations day or night. From there, it’s just 45 minutes to New York City.
