The J.D./M.B.A. program offers students the benefit of combining their legal education with businessanalysis and problem-solving tools, and an understanding of the economic ramifications of the law.

The program is typically completed in four years, although students can complete the program in less time by taking summer session and/or winter intersession courses and by seeking credit for certain business courses taken as an undergraduate.

The J.D./M.B.A. program provides students with a strong and comprehensive foundation for careers in both law and business and provides: • knowledge of the administrative process necessary for attorneys pursuing careers in business and not-forprofit institutions; • specialized proficiency in fields auxiliary to law, such as accounting, banking, finance, investment, marketing, management and taxation; and • knowledge of the economic implications of legal processes.

The program requirements for fulfillment of the law section of the curriculum are as follows:

The program requirements for fulfillment of the business section of the J.D./M.B.A. curriculum are broken down into four different components:

• Pass all first-year courses • Pass Constitutional Law I and II • Pass Evidence • Complete a professional responsibility requirement by passing either Lawyers’ Ethics; Lawyers’ Ethics Seminar; Ethics and Economics of Law Practice; or Legal Ethics and Malpractice • Successfully complete the two upperclass writing requirements (Writing Requirement I and Writing Requirement II) • Maintain a minimum cumulative gradepoint average of 2.2 • Complete the 6-credit experiential requirement • Pass Foundational Lawyering Skills • Complete additional law or other approved credits to a minimum of 87 credit-hours (which includes the 9 credits of approved coursework at the Zarb School of Business accepted by the Law School) The Law School will accept up to a total of 9 credits of approved coursework from the M.B.A. program toward the J.D. degree. The Law School Registrar (Office of Academic Records) maintains a list of such approved courses. Further, in order for the Zarb School credits to be accepted by the Law School toward the 87 required credit-hours, (1) the student must receive at least a C+ in the course, and (2) the student must complete the J.D./M.B.A. curriculum and receive the M.B.A. degree.

No grades received in Zarb School courses will be counted in the student’s Law School GPA.

• Component I: Residency Requirements, No credit • Component II: Core Competencies, 2-4 credits • Component III: Advanced Core, 21-24 credits • Component IV: Capstone, 3 credits J.D./M.B.A. students must complete 29-31 credits in the Zarb School. Up to 2 credits in the Core Competencies and 3 credits in the Advanced Core may be waived based on prior coursework, undergraduate degree and academic performance. The business curriculum of the J.D./M.B.A. must be completed in a specific sequence, with 20-22 credits completed in year 2 of the J.D./M.B.A. program. The remaining 9 credits are to be completed in year 3 of the J.D./M.B.A. program.

J.D./M.B.A. students are not required to complete a concentration at the Zarb School. Students must maintain an overall GPA of 3.0 at the Zarb School and must complete the J.D. degree to be awarded the M.B.A. No grades received in Law School courses will be counted in the student’s Zarb School GPA. Please consult with Dr. Kaushik Sengupta, Associate Dean for Business Graduate Education, at 516-463-7825, for advisement regarding the business curriculum.

Conferral of each degree is contingent on conferral of the other, and the J.D. and M.B.A. degrees will not be awarded until all course requirements are satisfied under both programs. Students will not be bar-certified until both degrees have been conferred. Students must complete the J.D./M.B.A. program within five years.

Sample Schedule The number of credits required for the M.B.A. degree depends on the student’s undergraduate major and whether any courses have been taken in the summer sessions or the winter intersession.

J.D./M.B.A. students are eligible to participate in the Law School Journal Writing Competition as part of the selection process for the Law School journals in the May before their third year in the J.D./M.B.A. program, and are eligible to participate in the on campus interview process through the Office of Career Services in the August before their third year in the J.D./M.B.A. program.

In any semester in which a student will be registered for classes in both the Law School and the Zarb School, the maximum number of credits any law student may take is 17.

Program Advisors In any semester in which a student is registered for classes in both the Law School and the Zarb School, he or she is required to meet with the faculty advisor, Professor Miriam Albert, and with Dr. Kaushik Sengupta, associate dean for business graduate education.

Miriam Albert, Professor of Skills and Faculty Advisor for the J.D./M.B.A. Program Professor Albert joined Hofstra Law in the fall of 2004, with practice experience as a corporate and securities attorney and teaching experience at law and business schools. She was previously on the faculties of Fordham Business School and Widener Law School, teaching business law topics including corporate, agency and partnership law, mergers and acquisitions, securities law, and interviewing and counseling, as well as legal writing.

Professor Albert’s research interests focus on business organization and international and domestic securities law issues. She holds a B.A. from Tufts University, a J.D. and an M.B.A. from Emory University, and an LL.M. in corporate law from New York University.

Kaushik Sengupta, Associate Professor of Management and Entrepreneurship Dr. Sengupta is chair of the Department of Management and Entrepreneurship and associate professor at the Zarb School of Business. Since 2011, he has been the executive director of the Online M.B.A. Program. His teaching and research are in the areas of operations management and supply chain management. He is involved with teaching and curriculum development for the B.B.A., M.B.A. and Executive M.B.A. programs.

Dr. Sengupta’s current focus areas of research are in the analysis of supply chain management trends and practices, and the analysis of industrywide similarities and differences in supply chain practices. Other related research areas of interest include quality management, supply chain security, health care operations, distance learning, and cross-functional research with interfaces between operations/supply chain and other areas of business.

Dr. Sengupta earned his M.S. and Ph.D. in business administration at Indiana University. He has an M.B.A. from the Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow, and a B.E. in mechanical engineering from Jadavpur University in Kolkata, India.

Tuition and Scholarships The packaging of students’ financial aid is handled by both the Law School Office of Financial Aid and the Hofstra University Student Financial Services office, depending on students’ course loads.

Students in the J.D./M.B.A. program pay full-time Law School tuition for the first year, full-time Zarb School of Business tuition for

the second year, and full-time Law School tuition for years 3 and 4. If the student has received a scholarship from the Law School, the scholarship amounts would apply in full for the first, third and fourth years of the program. Merit-based scholarships may be available from the Zarb School to qualified candidates for the second year of the program.

Applying to the J.D./M.B.A. Program How to Apply The J.D./M.B.A. program is highly competitive. Students with an LSAT score of 153 or above and an undergraduate GPA of 3.25 or above are eligible for admission.

The GMAT exam is not required for the J.D./M.B.A. program. There are two options for applying to the program.

Applicants may apply directly to the J.D./M.B.A. program by following the procedures for admission to the Law School and checking the box on the Law School application for “Applying to J.D./M.B.A. Program.”

Applicants may also apply to the J.D./ M.B.A. program during their first year of studies at the Law School. Such students seeking admission to the J.D./M.B.A. program should submit an application for the J.D./M.B.A. Program by June 1st of their first year in the Law School.

Law School students must have a cumulative Law School GPA in at least the top 50 percent of their class to be accepted into the J.D./M.B.A. program.

Completed Application Procedures, Checklist and Deadlines Create an account with LSAC (Law School Admission Council) at lsac.org to register for the LSAT, to use LSAC’s Credential Assembly Service (CAS) and to apply online.

Because the various parts of an application must come from several sources, it is students’ responsibility to see that all required materials reach the Office of Enrollment Management. No application will be considered complete for submission to the Admissions Committee until the following materials have been received and processed: • Application Form *No application fee required • Personal Statement • LSAT Score (required).
