FALL 2019

Joining the Hoffman Fabrics family is the ultimate full-circle story for me. Six years ago, I traveled to California to teach my first-ever guild workshop because someone (thank you, Jean) saw something in me, and was willing to take a chance on a young creative who hadn’t previously considered herself in that light. (Also, someone else—the original instructor they’d booked well in advance—had cancelled at the last minute for personal reasons... more serendipity at work!) You see, in between workshops that fateful Valentine’s Day weekend (reason #3 I got the gig—xoxo), the guild arranged a tour of Hoffman, where I observed, in awe, the rich history and handwork that goes into each collection. Total love at first sight. Fast forward a few years to QuiltCon, with a few more teaching engagements under my belt, when I first met Aaron and saw Hoffman’s striking new Me + You fabrics up close. I walked away from that encounter with a stack of Me + You Indah Batiks and an insatiable spark to honor the time and tradition of their production with some time-intensive piecing of my own. Out of that, the original “Hiss” quilt took shape (and with it, even more opportunities). All the little pieces of this quilting adventure have been falling into place ever since. If I’m honest, when I started to consider fabric design, Hoffman was such an obvious home I almost missed it. (Why ruin a good thing, you know?) Turns out, good things can get pretty great if you let them. From the Art Department’s mastery translating my, shall we say, uber-intricate designs, to the men and women in Bali who craft the metal tjaps and then hand stamp and hand dye every inch of every SKU... the fabric-design part feels secondary to all of that, and it’s beyond humbling to play even a small role in bringing this collection to life—and to all of you. Thank you to Hoffman for the role you’ve played in my creative path over the years, for letting Untamed be part of that journey, and for letting me be part of U n t a m e d’s.

One million thank yous are in order! To everyone at Hoffman, of course. To all the insanely talented makers who lent their time and craft to make something wonderful, even if it’s still in progress! :) To my mom, for coming out of sewing-retirement to be one of those people. To my friends. To my daughters and niece, for refusing to stand still (in the best possible way). And to my husband, for everything.
