Mixi Heart Quilt Designs

Q. You’ve been quilting for a good five years. Describe the moment the bug bit.

A. It was fantastic. There is nothing like using a sewing machine for the first time with quilting and being so content with the fact that it works. Who would have thought? Also, learning all the ins and outs of quilting is a blast. Very exciting and challenging and fun!

Q. Who influenced your first attempt at piecing and quilting?

A. There were a combination of things that influenced my first attempt at piecing. Ultimately, it was wanting a unique item that I created myself to have in my home. From there it was a wheel in motion from making things for others to eventually creating things that are new that others can make.

Q. Who are some quilters whose work you admire most now?

A. I love designers that I find designing in a similar style to my own. I see elements that are the same like color choice or a modern novelty approach. I love Kimberbell. She has the sweetest design style. Every time I see her new patterns I think “I love that”. I love Jen Kingwell. She appeals to my modern, traditional mix. I find I love mixing those two styles together as well.

Q. What were a few of your funniest boo-boos when you first got started sewing, piecing and quilting?

A. One of the funniest things that comes to mind is not knowing what a fat quarter was. It still cracks me up. Quilting has it’s own language. Also, I always seemed to run out of fabric with every project. I did a lot of substituting. Now I always buy too much fabric and then I am still very careful about my cuts to make sure I am getting the most out of the fabric I have, because it is so frustrating running out.

Q. Do you still have your first finished quilt, and if so, where do you keep it?

A. I do have my first finished quilt. It is stashed away in my quilt closet. It is NOT pretty. The fabric combinations are completely crazy. I ran out of fabric and when I went back to get more they were out. So then I threw in some different fabrics that I was going to “make work”. They didn’t work.

Q. What have been some of your most fulfilling projects and why?

A. My most fulfilling project would be my double wedding ring quilt. It took so much time cutting individual pieces and pinning the curves to prepare for sewing. It has been my most difficult quilt to date. I love it because I wanted to challenge myself to be the best quilter I could be and that involved checking off a very challenging, difficult quilt.

Q. What’s your best tip for a new quilter or sewist?

A. Keep finishing projects. Even if you think that it is a train wreck, just finish and do better on the next quilt. It isn’t worth stressing about. Make it an enjoyable process and before you know it you will love your projects more and more.

Q. What motivated you to delve into pattern-making and starting your own pattern business?

A. From the very beginning I liked making my own designs. That is why I always kept running out of fabric because I wasn’t following a pattern where you could find the fabric requirements. Also, I love sharing ideas with others in hopes they like what I like.

Q. How would you describe your quilting/sewing style?

A. I think that I am a mix of modern and traditional. I love piecing and quilting and fabric. So each of those elements play into my style. I think, okay, here is fabric I love, how can I show that off? Then, I work in traditional quilt blocks I love. Finally, I am a long-arm quilter so I am constantly thinking about how the quilting will finish the project off.

Q. Why is it that batiks are especially appealing to you?

A. One of the things that I love about batiks is the vivid color. Also, the uniqueness of each stamped piece. I am a one-of-a kind girl. So I think I am a mashup of those two.

Garden Tiles by the Yard Style #M2744

So of course, we had to attempt another completely new take on our special (and exclusive) “batik tiles” look.

We came up with Garden Tiles, featuring block-style, floral motifs that suggest stepping stones in a garden. Two fabrics (#M2743) and (#M2744) make up the line so far. Each style offers yardage of four different chop designs arranged in rows from selvage-to-selvage.

Fresh from the dugout, our “batik tiles” hit a grand-slam, from our Bali Tiles to Bali Snowflakes to Tropical Tiles.

Of course we also came up with a winning coordinate for Garden Tiles with a smaller-scale, floral-medallion batik coordinate (Style #M2742).

Moon Shadow By

Shhhh… it’s a romantic, moonlit night here in the forest. Beneath towering branches, a fanciful wonderland awaits. In the loom of this ethereal enchantment, each shadow adds a brilliant mystery all its own. But walk softly, you never know whoooooooo you might meet!

Moon Shadow, the new art-quilt by McKenna Ryan that uses her signature batik line Acres To Sew, beautifully illuminates the world of night creatures. With a bold color palette and emphasis on textures and shapes, Moon Shadow reflects a new modern elegance in McKenna’s recent quilt designs.

The main quilt in the series is made up of a trio of large blocks, each at a convenient width of 30-1/2”. Blocks 1-3 are complemented by 5 accompanying blocks (Blocks 4-8), each measuring 8” X 8”. Altogether, the main quilt and accompanying blocks create a gorgeous scene of Nature and woodland creatures. Imagine what a stunning art piece this would make hung on a display wall? The main quilt measures 30-1/2” X 57-1/4”.

Block 1: Twilight Veil (30-1/2” X 30-1/4”) A herd of deer venture to the forest’s edge under the cover of twilight.
