E-911 Readdressing Ordinances were implemented by Monroe County as a means of helping locate addresses. As snow flurries fill up fast, minimum size, location and height installation specifications help but are hindered if snow piles exceed signs can’t be seen.

As opportunities to enjoy another party together stir the impulse to decorate making everything look great, emergency responders are compelled to tell a few points and prevention.

Pocono Mountain Regional Ambulance’s new units are packed with features. In the previous issue we discussed the safety of the new fleet. Now, we will introduce some of the features.

One of the biggest features is the ability to remount. The ambulance patient module is built to outlast the chassis. Braun was chosen for the Pocono fleet because of the ability to remount the patient module onto a new chassis - directly from the manufacturer! This process extends the life of an ambulance and drastically reduces replacement costs.

Remounting and refurbishing an aging ambulance can save 20-40% over buying a new ambulance. Some departments have been able to remount the same unit multiple times, further increasing their savings.

The ultimate guide to a healthier you for 2017.

I want to get healthy for the New Year and start taking better care of my mind and body. Are there any tips you can give me?

With the New Year upon us, many of us start contemplating a fresh start in our lives, and why not? There’s no time like the present.

The good news is while caring for your health and wellbeing does take commitment, it doesn’t need to be all-consuming. In fact, many of the things you could be doing right now to improve your health are so quick and easy you’ll wonder why you spent much of the last year avoiding them in the first place.

Go for an annual appointment. This one is one of the easiest ways to keep yourself healthy. Make an appointment with your doctor today to be sure you are getting the screenings, exams, and immunizations you need to ensure optimum health. Need a doctor? Know your numbers and be vigilant. Get tested to find out your numbers for blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol and body mass index, as they can provide a snapshot of your overall health status and risks for certain serious diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. Your doctor can guide you through the process and make recommendations on next steps if your numbers are too low or high.

Clean hands save lives. If you’re not doing so already, make a commitment to wash your hands regularly with soap and clean, running water for at least 20 seconds. By doing this you’ll lower the risk of spreading germs and getting sick.

Nourish and protect your skin. Always wear sunscreen – even in the winter – and cover up to help lower your risk for sunburn and skin cancer. Also, use moisturizer to protect your skin from the harsh winter weather.

Quit smoking. Most of us know that smoking and being around secondhand smoke is extremely detrimental to our health. Do your best to quit completely. When you have the urge for a cigarette, do something else and take deep breath. The urge will usually pass in a few minutes. Don’t be ashamed to ask for help, Pocono Medical Center offers an excellent smoking cessation program that can be reached by calling 570-476-3680.

Eat healthy. Be sure to read food labels in the supermarket and at home to check how much fat, cholesterol, sodium, sugar, protein, and other important ingredients are in the foods you are eating and feeding your family. Keep portion sizes in check. Healthy serving sizes are not too difficult to figure out. As a general guide, a cup of fruit should be no larger than the size of your fist; an ounce of meat or cheese is about the size of an adult’s thumb from base to tip and three ounces of meat is about the size of your palm. And, one to two ounces of nuts would fit in the palm of your hand.

Be active. Try to exercise or be active for a minimum of 2 ½ hours every week. It’s okay to break up the amount of time into smaller intervals—even 10 minutes. Children and teens should strive to be active for at least an hour each day. Any activities that raise your breathing and heart rate will do the trick.

When you need it, take a break. Finally, one of the most important things we can do to nourish our emotional and physical health is to take a break when we most need it. If you feel yourself becoming extremely stressed, give yourself a breather for even just a few minutes. By doing this, you’ll give yourself the opportunity to clear your head and you’ll just feel better.
