Perth Hockey Stadium at Curtin University will thunder to life again this Sunday 29 October when the Perth Thundersticks go head-to-head with Hockey Club Melbourne. The Thundersticks women have secured two wins from two games this Hockey One season, and even with a bye round early in the tournament, they currently sit at second on the ladder – just below this week’s opponents Hockey Club Melbourne. The Thundersticks women have established a pattern this season, taking comfortable 4-1 wins over both the Canberra Chill and the Tassie Tigers. Their season-opener in Perth against the Chill was as sizzling as the 36-degree day, and the heat continued last weekend when they tackled the Tigers in their home state. The Hockey Club Melbourne women have had a similarly commanding start to the 2023 season, winning all three of their matches. In rounds one and two, they defeated the Tassie Tigers 1-0, and Adelaide Fire 2-1. Then, in round three, the found themselves in a tightly contested game against NSW Pride. The teams drew 1-1 and went into shootouts, which HC Melbourne narrowly won 4-3. These teams met on two occasions during the 2022 season, the first time of which, the Thundersticks emerged with a 2-0 win over Melbourne at their home field. The game’s score was tied at 0-0 until the final quarter. Then, a penalty corner from Georgia Wilson and a field goal from Line Malan in the final eight minutes of the match pushed the Thundersticks to victory.

The second time was the third-place playoff match, and that time, the Thundersticks couldn’t wait to get a score on the board. Penny Squibb and Georgina Dowd scored two goals in the first two minutes from a stroke and a field conversion respectively. Their third goal came from a penalty corner from Karri Somerville late in the second quarter, which secured the Thundersticks win over Hockey Club Melbourne, as well as the bronze medal for the 2022 season. This weekend’s games between the two front-runners of the women’s competition promises to be equally as entertaining and is sure to set Perth Hockey Stadium alight once again. The women will take to centre stage first, with the day’s play kicking off at 1:30pm. The Thundersticks men, currently in fifth position after their first two rounds and a bye, are raring to reignite the rumble against Hockey Club Melbourne this Sunday. The men, like the women, took the season-opener against the Chill 4-1. Though, they didn’t see the same success the women did in Tasmania, going down 2-1 to the Tigers last Friday night. Hockey Club Melbourne’s men sit in sixth on the ladder, despite playing one more game than the Thundersticks. Melbourne began their season strong, defeating the Tassie Tigers 4-1 in round one. Then, a 3-2 loss to Adelaide Fire and a 11-2 domination from NSW Pride saw them sink down the ladder. Melbourne finished the 2022 Hockey One in the same sixth position, while the Thundersticks secured the silver medal in a 2-0 grand final loss against NSW Pride. Round two of last season heralded an 8-5 win for the Thundersticks over Hockey Club Melbourne in Melbourne. The first quarter was goalless, then after the second quarter, the Thundersticks were unstoppable in front of the net. Cam Geddes and Liam Flynn scored two penalty corners each and Tom Wickham scored an incredible four goals from two field goals and two conversions. Hockey Club’s Melbourne’s Nathan Ephraums scored four of the team’s five goals in the match, also from two field goals and subsequent conversions and will definitely be one to watch this weekend when the Thundersticks face-off against Melbourne once again.

From Countryside to Countrywide, the Thundersticks players’ journey to the top
The Perth Thundersticks showed all of Australia that they are a force to be reckoned with in this year’s JDH Hockey One season after three weeks of competition. Not only have they showcased Perth’s local hockey talent, but they also represented the hockey talent of regional WA, with many of the squad’s members hailing from our state’s rural towns. Thundersticks and Kookaburras staple of many years, Aran Zalewski, began his illustrious hockey journey the moment he could hold a hockey stick. “My old man was into hockey, so as soon as I could hold a stick, he cut one of his old sticks in half for me to run around with and we just went from there,” he said. Then, as soon as Zalewski was eligible to play, he was carving up the muddy fields of Margaret River Hockey Club. Despite the monumental list of his career achievements he has accumulated, Zalewski says the memories he has of playing in the mud in regional towns surrounding Margaret River are still among some of his favourites. “I will always remember that one Saturday morning when Mum picked me up from a game, I was covered head to toe in mud, and she drove next to me as I walked all the way home.” he said. “Whenever I encounter failures or setbacks, I think (back to) those memories, they make me the happiest.”

Zalewski said he is able to express and feel the most himself when he is playing hockey, which his regional sporting community gave him the opportunity to do. Zalewski played an instrumental role in the Thundersticks’ win on the weekend, as he does in all of team’s successes. This, he humbly credits to the love of the game, and his Margaret River roots who helped to light that fire within him. “Hockey, and sport in general, is super important in regional towns - it binds the town and creates a great sense of community,” he said. Alistair Murray, originally from Wickepin Hockey Club in WA’s Wheatbelt region, shares Aran’s passion for regional hockey representation and involvement, highlighting the game’s unique ability to bring people together, much like he experienced at his own home turf. “We had just one grass field which doubled as footy oval,” he said. “No changerooms or anything, (we’d) just stand on the sidelines - but I loved it.” Murray’s hockey journey was inspired by his family ties in the game, with his grandfather also playing for the Thundersticks in the 1960s. His personal love for hockey began during his very first game in which he scored his first goal, taking the team’s winning score to a staggering 16-0. Since then, Murray has represented his regional roots in the Perth Thundersticks, Under-21 Australian side (the Burras) and the Australian Youth Olympic Games Team, but he says he will always be grateful for where he started.

Since then, Murray has represented his regional roots in the Perth Thundersticks, Under-21 Australian side (the Burras) and the Australian Youth Olympic Games Team, but he says he will always be grateful for where he started. In the women’s side, 2023 Perth Thundersticks debutant, 20-year-old Belle Ramshaw, showcased her hockey prowess after she scored a penalty corner goal against the Chill. Ramshaw is also among the players who herald from regional WA. Ramshaw made her start at Collie Rovers Hockey Club, where at times she would travel up to two and a half hours each way just to play one game. With her family and the community in Collie as her base, Ramshaw has represented WA in their Under13, Under-18 and Under-21 State Teams, and represented Australia in the Jillaroo's National Junior Team. Sibling connection driving Thundersticks
Jake and Tom Harvie have been powerhouses of WA hockey for many years, shining on the local, national and international stage. The Perth Thundersticks' 4-1 win in their JDH Hockey One season opener against Canberra Chill was certainly no exception for the brothers. The elder of the boys, Jake, said coming away with the win was a tribute to all the hard work the Thundersticks have put into their training, and a great way to start an already exciting season. “We had a clear focus on how (we wanted) to play and we got that right," he said. "We had some really positive passages of play, but there’s still stuff to work on as a team.” This season will be the second time the pair have played in the Thundersticks together, and both brothers said they love being able to play alongside one another at such an elite level again. “It’s always a pleasure to step out with Jake." Tom said. "The level of enjoyment that I get from playing with him is one that I just can’t get from playing with anyone else. “We have a strong connection and it’s nice to know that someone else on the field knows exactly what you’re thinking all of the time, (and has your) back no matter what.”

Jake shared his brother’s sentiments, saying how proud they both were of what they’ve been able to achieve as players, and how grateful he is to not only watch Tom play next to him, but how in-tune and similar their attacking game style is. “I just love it. We have a great connection and it was great to see him have such a high-quality game." he said. "(His game) might have been better than mine, so I’ll give him that one.” Growing up in the South West region of WA, Jake and Tom have played together since they were 4 and 6, respectively. Tom, now 23 years old, is a member of the Western Australian Institute of Sport program, and Jake, now 25, is a permanent fixture of the Kookaburra’s defensive line. Jake made his Australian debut in 2017, at just 19 years of age. Since then, he has made 117 appearances and totalled 5 goals for the Kookaburras. He is set to don the Green and Gold once again in the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics, and playing Hockey One, he believes, is an invaluable way to prepare for such a momentous event. “It’s one of the best domestic competitions in the world and has been for a long time. I’m lucky with the high-level and fast-paced preparation.” Jake said. “It’s also nice to get to play against the people I train with (in the Kookaburras) through the week.”

Jake says the thing he is looking forward to most about the upcoming Olympic Games is the opportunity and honour to represent Australia again. “International hockey has never been as competitive as it is right now and an Olympics on European soil is an awesome opportunity to experience.” After Thunderstick’s thrilling win on the weekend, Tom said that the team have definitely set themselves up to be a force to be reckoned with again this season. “We have a positive group and a great team. It’s going to be an exciting year for the Thundersticks.” But the sporting prowess in the Harvie family isn’t limited to just Jake and Tom, their grandfather, Gordon Pearce, was a triple Olympian, playing for the Australian Hockey team in 1956, ‘60 and ‘68. Gordon’s four brothers – Cec, Eric, Julian and Mal – also represented Australia on the hockey field during the 1950s and ‘60s.
