Dear Friends, The 2019-2020 fiscal year began full of excitement and anticipation of reaching a truly wonderful milestone for The Hochstein School: our 100 year anniversary! This season of promise allowed us to reflect on a century of fulfilling our mission, serving our community, and helping to build an ever more beautiful city, county, and region with the power of music and dance. Celebrations had been prepared for January through December: a host of special concerts and events, including a Centennial Gala to be remembered for years to come. When the pandemic hit, the year turned into something that we had never before experienced, let alone could ever imagine … During the first half of the fiscal year, we provided comprehensive programs in music, dance, and expressive arts therapies; awarded tuition assistance to many who would not have been able to participate otherwise; and offered dozens of concerts and events in our superb Performance Hall as well as in the community. Our Hochstein at High Falls, Live from Hochstein, and Spotlight on Faculty series continued offering free or low-cost performances to both our Hochstein family and the community at large. In January, we celebrated the start of our Centennial year with a spectacular concert presented by our own alumni, including the Hochstein Alumni Orchestra, which is now in its 10th consecutive year. A truly remarkable demonstration of our work over so many seasons, fulfilled! In February, we celebrated again with current students in our orchestra program – all 186 of them! – performing together to a full house in our Performance Hall. However, COVID-19 precipitated the closing of our building in March, and we quickly pivoted to offering online lessons and classes. This was new territory for nearly every member of the faculty. Overnight we learned how to teach and connect with students via Zoom, Skype, Facetime, and Google Meet, with whatever devices we had available. Incredibly, we were able to retain 80% of our individual music lesson students, and even some classes and ensembles. Unfortunately, we could not provide all programs in an online format, nor serve all our students or clients in this way. We were especially limited in providing services to many of our Expressive Arts clients. Even though we could not hold in-person concerts, we found satisfaction in Zoom recitals and used this tool as a new way to present students and shine a spotlight on their growth and progress. Throughout these unprecedented times, the Hochstein community – our faculty, our staff, and our board members and advisory directors – demonstrated unwavering commitment to sustaining our School and to working together to find solutions to a myriad of new challenges. All of this has been possible only through the generous support of many individuals, corporate sponsors, and foundations who believe in our mission and stepped forward to make it happen – along with our dedicated and capable administrative staff and faculty who keep Hochstein’s mission front and center. Please accept my deepest thanks and appreciation to everyone who has been part of this collective effort – to protect and build on the amazing legacy of David Hochstein and Emily Sibley Watson – as we forge ahead in 2021 and embark upon our second century! With Gratitude,
Dr. Margaret (Peggy) Quackenbush President & Executive Director
HOCHSTEIN STORIES “HOCHSTEIN is EPIC!” Ten-year-old Sylas takes Suzuki violin lessons at Hochstein and is a member of Concertino Strings. His mother, Michelle Newkirk, says, “Hochstein provides the best and most accessible music education that we could hope for, but it is so much more than a music school. The staff and families that form Hochstein’s diverse and nurturing community create a safe space for children to explore and express themselves with unconditional love and support.” Sylas adds, “Hochstein is epic!”
“ART THERAPY has let me EXPRESS my CREATIVITY.”
Jackie writes: “I’m 21 and have multiple disabilities. I’ve been coming to Hochstein since 2011. At first, I just took art and music therapies. Then I added photography and dance. The classes have helped me develop my talents. My instructors are patient when I’m learning something new. They really listen to what I want to do.” Jackie goes on to say, “Art therapy has let me express my creativity.”
S T O R I E S C O N T’ D ... “ YOU may FIND your NEW PASSION!”
Hochstein Board Member Eric Logan decided to take a bold move and become a Hochstein student! He tells us why ... “I’ve long been enamored with the sound of the cello … the richness of the sound … the range of notes and expression … but why now? “As a professional vocalist and rudimentary pianist/organist/keyboardist, most if not all of the musical ‘space’ in my life has already been occupied. The cello however has been on my bucket list for some time. When Kathy Kemp (my instructor and Assistant Principal Cello of the RPO) heard of my desire, she was very encouraging. I was interested, but I didn’t know when I could fit it in. Then COVID-19 happened and suddenly I had a little more time on my hands. “Would I recommend this to you? Absolutely! Developing or growing musical skills is a good thing, regardless of age. You may find your new passion!”

2019-20 HIGHLIGHTS Over the course of the year we were fortunate to work with 3,653 individuals of all ages, ranging from 6 months to more than 90 years old. Our music, dance, and expressive arts programs provided enriching experiences for more than 2,000 students in music and dance, and nearly 1,600 in music, dance, and arts therapy. Hochstein partnered with other community organizations to provide arts education and arts therapy services, including: • the YMCA Child Care Centers at Carlson, Lewis Street, and Maplewood branches to provide sequential learning in music classes each week to 87 preschoolers, ages 3 and 4 • music teachers of the Rochester City School District and the Rochester Education Foundation to provide their students with 44 summer scholarships for lessons, classes, and camps • our collaborative partners in ROCmusic – Eastman School of Music, Eastman Community Music School, Rochester City School District, City of Rochester, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, and Gateways Music Festival – to support immersive music instruction to 130 city students in grades 1-12 • dozens of agencies and organizations serving those with disabilities and the elderly to provide music, movement, and art therapy services Additionally, we awarded $234,517 in tuition assistance to 1,878 individuals who would not have been able to participate in our programs otherwise. We appreciate our long-standing partnership with WXXI in presenting Live from Hochstein – eight noontime concerts played in our beloved Performance Hall and broadcast to the entire community – and Hochstein at High Falls; ten outdoor concerts during the months of June through August.
Hochstein at High Falls 2019
Throughout this challenging year, we were very grateful for the events and gatherings that were able to take place in-person between July 2019 and early March 2020. Hochstein remains committed to our community – in our building and around the Rochester area. These include the Flower City Family Fest, the Barnes and Noble bookfair, and the annual Musical Mystery Tour. In addition, there were numerous concerts performed by our student ensembles and our talented faculty shared memorable performances with our Spotlight on Faculty series. Hochstein Alumni Orchestra - January 2020
Hochstein Youth Singers - December 2019
Our monthly all-School student recitals quickly transitioned to “Hochstein At Home” in mid-March. The virtual recital format became immensely popular with our students and families because more friends and relatives could attend, as distance was no longer a barrier. We produced two virtual events: Come Together for Hochstein in April and in June, the annual Honors Convocation, which allowed our community to remain connected even while we couldn’t gather together in person.
Regardless of the pandemic, we still have so much to be thankful for, namely the unwavering support we have received from our donors and friends. Your help has been invaluable as we continue to navigate an extremely challenging landscape. Thank you for your partnership and commitment in continuing to protect and fulfill the mission of the School.
The mission of the David Hochstein Memorial Music School is to provide people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities with access to excellent music and dance education in a community that nurtures and encourages personal achievement.
Hochstein programs are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
The Hochstein School is an accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music - NASM
