to the family-friendly Black Forest Highlands Holiday time is adventure time! Whether it’s a weekend trip with the kids or those long-awaited family holidays, the Black Forest Highlands offer fun and relaxation for young and old alike.

As Baden-Württemberg’s largest region officially recognised as familyfriendly, the Black Forest Highlands are packed with places to stay, great offers and an exciting holiday programme. Varied children’s trails, day trip destinations and attractions will make little hearts leap – and boredom doesn’t stand a chance, whatever the season.

In summer, forest climbing parks and high ropes courses promise thrills at lofty heights. Kid-friendly bike tours and adventure and family walking routes bring the area’s rich wildlife and impressive scenery to life. And afterwards? Plenty of swimming lakes and outdoor pools guarantee maximum water fun for the whole family.

Winter has lots to offer too. Alongside downhill fun in a wide range of ski areas, you can explore hundreds of kilometres of cross-country ski trails. A great choice of winter walking routes, snowshoe trails and toboggan runs makes for an unforgettable outdoor experience.

Out and about Hot on nature’s trail – with the nature explorer’s rucksack!

Whether in the forest or out in the meadow, by the water or up in the air – there’s so much to discover, observe, identify and explore. Equipped with a compass, magnifying cup, torch, net, binoculars and treasure pouch, the nature explorer’s rucksack is available to borrow free of charge (deposit € 50.00) from all Tourist Information Centres in the Black Forest Highlands.

Every child also receives their own personalised nature explorer’s book to go with it, including researcher rules, a researcher profile and fun forest games.

Tonis

Toni’s nature explorer’s book Children quickly become little nature researchers themselves. With charming illustrations and puzzles, they can discover the natural world through play.

Bienenlehrpfad 'Via Apis' Bee nature trail 'Via Apis'

A weatherproof circular walk packed with ‘aha!’ moments: the Bee nature trail 'Via Apis' in Bonndorf introduces families to the fascinating world of bees – and why they matter so much.

Trail at a glance: ‘Look, there’s a bee!’ Many parents know the children’s song – which really ought to go on: ‘Look how it flies and how it works!’ But bees aren’t celebrated just for their industriousness. Above all, they impress with their social skills: they dedicate their whole lives to the service of the community. And that deserves attention. That’s exactly what Herb Beekeeping in Bonndorf thought too – and created the nature trail 'Via Apis' as a very special tribute to these hard-working little insects.

The trail is around two kilometres long and includes a gentle incline. Along the way you’ll find 15 stations with beautifully designed information boards, plus plenty of hands-on activities and discovery points. The starting point is a small but lovely playground – usually the first place children make a beeline for. At the end of the loop, the Herb Beekeeping farm and distillery invites you to learn even more about bees – and, of course, to buy a selection of honeys and other natural products.

Tip: guided tours are available from Herb Black Forest Beekeeping for groups of 10 or more.

Der Wichtelpfad im Auerhahnwald

The Forest Gnome Trail in the Capercaillie Forest

Explore the Forest Gnome Trail with Ferdinand, the Forest Gnome postman, and help him find Anton the capercaillie! Ferdinand and his friends are already looking forward to playing with you at the Forest Gnome playground.

Trail at a glance: In an enchanted little woodland high up on Mountain 'Feldberg', Velt the Feldberg Forest Gnome lives with his friends: Wuchtig, the landlord of the inn ‘Zur süßen Heidelbeere’, Violeta the forest fairy and Hypogymnus Flechtel from the woodland pharmacy. One day, Ferdinand – the postman of the Forest Gnome mail – delivers a letter for Anton the capercaillie.

But he can’t find the big bird anywhere. So Ferdinand asks Velt and his friends for help. Velt joins him on the search.

Here you can discover whether they found Anton, and what the letter says.

Towards the end of the 1.8 km trail, at a beautiful woodland playground, you’ll learn what capercaillies need to survive, why they eat stones as well as their food, and lots more. See what there is to discover in the Forest Gnome forest.

Can you help Velt and Ferdinand find Anton the capercaillie? Then off you go!

Tipp: Enjoy a virtual balloon ride and the ‘Talking Ranger’ at Museum 'Haus der Natur'.

And if you still feel like letting off steam, you can have fun at Fundorena.

Ameisenpfad Ant Trail

On the Rötenbach Ant Trail, you can explore the forest and stream with Amina the ant – curious, adventurous and always ready for a discovery.

Trail at a glance: Have you ever seen a crayfish? Do you know which wood magic wands are made from – or just how strong an ant really is? You’ll find out all that here. Ten stations invite you to climb trees, balance along logs and discover all sorts of exciting things. Amina the ant accompanies you all the way round.

Ready? Then come along and let Amina lead you from station to station. She’ll share fascinating facts about the life of ants. At the crayfish dig you’ll reach the nature reserve ‘Rötenbacher Wiesen’, where – especially in early summer – you can spot a wide variety of plants and animals. Along the way, you’ll keep coming across stations where you can put your knowledge to the test. Expect narrow paths, a wild and romantic gorge with lots of waterfalls and small bridges – so take care and don’t rush!

Viewpoint tip: If you have time and feel like it, you can even go treasure hunting with Amina by geocaching. Who knows – you might actually find a treasure at the end!

Schlühüwanapark-Naturerlebnispfad Schlühüwanapark nature theme trail

A little cuckoo and his squirrel friend will guide you from station to station through the forest, showing you part of their habitat. Wondering what ‘Schlühüwanapark’ means? Here’s the first clue: it stands for SchlüchtseeHüsli-Wald-Natur-Park.

Trail at a glance: A fearsome snake and some funny little gnomes give you a warm welcome. Start your adventure by exploring nature on the barefoot trail and making the forest xylophone sing. Follow the squirrel to more stations that challenge your senses and your skills. The stalking trail takes you deep into the woods, where – with a little luck and patience – you might spot shy woodland residents.

Have you seen all the animals? You can extend the loop to include a circuit of Lake 'Schlüchtsee' (plus approx. 2 km). Enjoy the splashing fun at the water station, then pop by the insect hotel to see who’s moved in. To finish, listen to animal calls at the Place of Silence before returning to the starting point. Have fun exploring nature’s wonders!

PS: Did you know the first sculptures here were created from roots and tree remains after Storm Lothar in 1999? Hobby woodcarver Herbert Hofmeier brought them to life.

Wildtierpfad Wildlife Trail

Join Karla, a young doe, on an adventurous search for her missing father – and get to know lots of different wild animals along the way.

Trail at a glance: This trail teaches you all about the characteristics and lifestyles of our native wildlife. Why, for example, can leisure activities in the forest disturb wild animals? Ten lovingly designed information boards share valuable tips on wildlife-friendly behaviour in the woods, alongside the story of young Karla.

Rare species such as the endangered capercaillie, as well as our largest native mammal – the red deer – are at home here. As most wild animals are very shy, you rarely see them. But with a bit of luck and a keen eye, you may spot plenty of signs that they’re around. See what you can find!

Along the way, you’ll enjoy lovely views of Häusern. On a clear day, you can even see the Alps.

Tip: The Chapel 'Wittlisberger Kapelle' is well worth a look.

Evernius´ Naturerlebnispfad Nature theme trail 'Evernius'

The gnome Evernius Flechtel explores the nature theme trail with you and guides you from station to station. The playgrounds along the way are an experience in themselves, too.

Trail at a glance: On the nature theme trail you can explore the forest on two different routes of varying length. The first section is 1.5 km long and is also suitable for pushchairs (except stations E and F). Here you can sharpen your senses and put your skills to the test. From a tree memory quiz to the dendrophon and an obstacle course, there’s plenty to make little hearts race with excitement.

Part 2 is around two kilometres long, takes you along picturesque footpaths and offers wonderful views. You might even be able to watch ski jumpers training at the Ski Jump 'Adlerschanze'. At the end of the tour you’ll reach pond 'Adlerweiher', where you can test everything you’ve learned in the ‘big Evernius quiz’. A great day out awaits!

Tip: If you’d like to find out more about skiing, visit the Schwarzwald Ski Museum – there’s a brilliant family quiz to solve here, too.

Kuhnigundes Kuhle(h)rpfad Kuhnigunde’s cow Trail

On this children’s trail you’ll meet Kuhnigunde the cow and her friends on Kuhberg hill. Along the way you can tackle fun tasks and discover lots of new things.

Trail at a glance: Together with Kuhnigunde, you’ll set off on the Kuhle(h)r Trail and learn about farming in the Black Forest Highlands through play.

Whether you’re testing your balance or having a go at ‘wellie skittles’, the many different stations make sure there’s never a dull moment on the walk.

At the end of the route, up on Kuhberg, you’ll be rewarded with wonderful views of district 'Saig' and Mountain 'Hochfirst'. – plus a great playground for running around and relaxing. Moo – pretty brilliant, isn’t it?

Tip: If you’re feeling hot afterwards, head to the Lenzkirch outdoor pool for a refreshing dip.

Naturerlebnispfad Nature theme trail

Hansi Holzknecht guides you through the forest, where 12 stations on the theme of ‘the forest’ are waiting for you. Along the way you can enjoy the views over Schonach.

Trail at a glance: Start your walk on the path 'Seifenbergweg'. At the trail entrance you’ll find a box containing puzzle booklets with tasks for each station. From there, Hansi Holzknecht will accompany you around the circular route and point the way with the tip of his beak.

The trail takes you over sticks and stones, along narrow paths to listening tubes and humming stones, mighty trees and a variety of forest residents. Get ready – you’ll discover loads! Time and again you’ll enjoy views of the beautiful landscape around Schonach, with its farmhouses, meadows, pastures and woods.

At the end of the tour, take the correct solution word to the Tourist Information Centre in Schönwald and collect your certificate as a junior forester.

Tip: In the park 'Schonach Kurpark' there’s a fantastic large playground with a raft out on the lake.

Annis Schwarzwald Geheimnis Anni’s Black Forest secret

Who won the Schönwald ski competition 30 years ago? Join Anni and Franziska to find the winner and present the well-deserved medal.

Trail at a glance: At the heart of Anni’s Black Forest secret is a rucksack filled with little boxes and padlocks. It comes with lots of puzzles and tasks, which you solve step by step at seven puzzle locations along an interesting route that weaves in local history.

The game is designed for puzzle-loving children aged six to twelve and is ideal for groups – especially for children’s birthday parties. The experience deliberately avoids any technical support: everything is about ‘analogue’ outdoor fun and discovering nature. You’ll need around three hours for this tour.

Advance booking via the Tourist Information Centre is required. Participation fee: € 25.00. Deposit for the rucksack: € 50.00. As this is an outdoor escapestyle family game, you’ll need to work out the route as you go.

Tip: Fancy cooling off afterwards? Schönwald’s natural outdoor pool is looking forward to your visit.

Weißtannenlehrpfad Silver fir nature trail

The forest is a huge ecosystem with so much to discover. On this circular walk through the forest 'Pfisterwald' in St. Märgen, you’ll get to know the silver fir – a tree that’s typical of the Black Forest. Enjoy exploring!

Trail at a glance: This nature trail offers a fascinating insight into the world of the forest and was created especially with families in mind. Opened in 2021, it was developed in cooperation with, and funded by, ForstBW. It covers topics such as the silver fir and nature conservation. Presented in a child-friendly way on eight information boards, it’s a wonderful place to learn more – with a picnic break in between, of course. A special highlight is a fir cone sculpture marking the entrance to the trail, created by Thomas Rees from an oak trunk weighing around two tonnes.

Did you know firs can live for up to 500 years? The thickest specimens have a trunk circumference of almost seven metres! You’ll discover this and plenty more in forest 'Pfisterwald'.

Tipp: Let off steam at the nature playground in forest 'Pfisterwald' – and stop for a snack break too.

Zur Pirateninsel vorbei an historischen Klostermauern

To the Pirate Island, past historic monastery walls Explore the exciting Pirate Island on your own and dive into the fascinating history of St. Peter’s old monastery walls!

Trail at a glance: Did you know the walls of the Benedictine monastery in St. Peter are almost 1,000 years old? The monastery was founded in 1093.

Incredible, isn’t it?

Start your walk in the centre of St. Peter. Your destination is the Pirate Island at Pond 'Badweiher', with a varied playground featuring swings, a seesaw, slide, little adventure hut and water play areas. You’ll almost walk there without noticing as you follow Stream 'Schmittenbach' towards Pond 'Badweiher'.

Time to run, climb and play! On the way back to the car park, follow the picturesque mill channel and enjoy views of the old monastery complex. It’s well worth taking a look inside too.

Tip: In summer, model boats take to Pond 'Badweiher' on selected days for a display ride.

Gäg-Wäg (Witzeweg) Joke Trail This trail takes you through woodland along the plateau, with 20 stations full of fun jokes and sayings. Along the way you can enjoy views over the Black Forest Highlands.

Trail at a glance: On this walk, put your phone away, switch it off – or better still, leave it at home – and simply take in nature. That’s exactly why the rural youth group from District 'Schwärzenbach' created this trail for you in 2019 as part of a 72-hour volunteer challenge. If you’d like to get involved and share your own jokes with others, feel free to bring a water-soluble felt-tip pen.

The route is split into two loops. The first is just under two kilometres (around 45 minutes), suitable for pushchairs and with eight joke stations. The second is around four kilometres long and follows partly unmade paths. Just follow the Gäg-Wäg signs – and you’ll be laughing all the way.

Tip: For maximum fun on the trail, it’s best if you’re at least ten years old.

Mugg’s Erlebnis-Rundweg Mugg’s Adventure Loop Trail

Eleven stops await you around Muggenbrunn, where ‘Mugg’, Muggenbrunn’s first settler, shares fascinating facts about the village’s history and daily life, as well as the nature and environment of this Black Forest community.

Trail at a glance: My name is Mugg! Legend has it that my springs and I gave Muggenbrunn its name. This circular route is just under eight kilometres long.

You’ll spot me on signposts and information boards along the way and discover my beautiful village from many different angles: the stunning mountain scenery with the Rock Path 'Felsenwegle', a variety of forests, common pastures, wonderful panoramic views and local streams. There’s even a barefoot trail waiting for you! With a smartphone and a specially developed app, the stops can also be experienced interactively.

Tip: At the end, why not visit Mugg’s leisure area? There are play options for all ages, plus great spots for a picnic.

Zauberweg am Hasenhorn Enchanted Trail at Hasenhorn

Ilex and Farfara, the little forest folk from the woods of Todtnau, will join you in the search for the missing magic stone. The Enchanted Trail takes you to various stops, and a barbecue area along the way is perfect for a break.

Trail at a glance: You start at the valley station of the Hasenhorn chairlift and take it up the mountain, gaining almost 400 metres in altitude. At the top, enjoy the panorama over Todtnau and other places such as Todtnauberg, Feldberg and Muggenbrunn. If you have time and fancy it, you can take a detour to the Hasenhorn viewing tower (approx. 30 minutes on foot).

From the Inn Berggasthaus 'Hasenhorn', follow the signs for the enchanted path. Along the route, information boards tell the story of Ilex and Farfara.

You’ll find plenty of play stations where you can let off steam, as well as sculptures and figures to admire. In the end, you’ll (hopefully) find the magic stone – because if it isn’t found, the enchanted forest will lose its colour.

Tip: The book about the trail by Sabine Steinebrunner is available at the Tourist Information Centre of Bergwelt Todtnau.

Horneradsch, from the mountain troll family, explores his home – the forest – together with you. There are lots of stops to marvel at, discover and try out.

Trail at a glance: Hello, I’m the mountain troll ‘Horneradsch’! Are you as keen as I am to roam through the wonderfully scented Black Forest and really experience it? It’s truly exciting. The forest is my home, which makes it very special to me – and I’d love to invite you on an interesting, active outing through it.

Whether it’s mushroom knowledge, tracking skills or a visit to the Forest of Silence, we’ll experience it all up close. And there’s plenty of action too: forest skittles, pine cone tossing, and an adventure playground along the route where you can really burn off some energy. Stunning views will take your breath away – you’ll see…

Tip: If you fancy a refreshment afterwards, visit the Outdoor Pool 'Berger Bad' in Todtnauberg – or dare to cross the suspension bridge Blackforestline.

Nothing works here without a marble. Along the two marble runs, your wooden marble can really let loose out in nature. Pure adventure holiday for wooden marbles – and with a bit of luck, your marble might even take you along into the forest…

Trail at a glance: You can buy marbles from the marble vending machines at the car park 'Oberholz' and at the swimming lake 'Naturena' (€ 1.00; please bring the exact amount).

Little ones (aged three and up) will love the Forest Animals marble run (short loop). Older children (aged seven and up) can let off steam on the Wood Processing marble run (long loop).

So off you go – grab your marble and treat yourself to some fun!

Tip: In summer, don’t forget your swimwear. At the end of the tour you can cool off in the swimming lake 'Naturena' (admission fee applies).

Tips for little and big adventurers In the Black Forest Highlands, a new adventure is waiting around every corner. Whether you’re after animal encounters and action at the Animal and Leisure Park 'Tatzmania' in Löffingen, curious discoveries at the Museum 'Schwarzwaldhaus der Sinne' in Grafenhausen, an adrenaline rush on the 'Hasenhorn Coaster' in Todtnau, or letting off steam the Fundorena Indoor Fun Park on Mountain 'Feldberg' – there’s something here for every taste. The perfect family holiday

The Black Forest Highlands – Baden-Württemberg’s most family-friendly region. We are very proud of this award, which was presented to the Black Forest Highlands by our umbrella organisation, Tourismus Marketing GmbH Baden-Württemberg. Together with 32 accommodation providers, 12 towns and villages, five restaurants and three service partners – Spa and Water Paradise "Badeparadies Schwarzwald" in Titisee, Museum 'Schwarzwaldhaus der Sinne' in Grafenhausen and Minigolf Park 'Abenteuer Golfpark' in Lenzkirch-Kappel – we met the requirements and successfully passed the quality assessment.

This makes the Black Forest Highlands the largest family-friendly region in Baden-Württemberg. A range of criteria must be fulfilled, and these are reassessed on site every three years. Only those who meet the standards and offer special services and activities for families and children receive the quality seal featuring the lion ‘Leo Lustig’. Key factors include, for example, good local infrastructure with playgrounds, indoor options, children’s programmes, family-friendly hosts and more.

The aim of the seal is to highlight the quality of family-friendly offers in Baden-Württemberg, ensure that this high standard is maintained and further developed, and support the providers.
