Message from the Chairman By Mr Nigel Russell

he Australian International School is many things to thousands of people. It is a place of learning, teaching and work for our current student and staff population. It is a place of fond memories for our past students and staff. Amongst all the things for which AIS is known and remembered, the owners and managers of the School strive hardest for it to be recognized as a place where children are supported to achieve their potential and to prepare them for university study and careers anywhere in the world. With a consistent focus on academic excellence, we expect and help our students to be and do their best. As part of this commitment, AIS invited the Council of International Schools (CIS) to evaluate the School. This process took several years and culminated recently with AIS being fully accredited by CIS as an international school that is “committed to high quality education, continual improvement and maintaining the highest standards”. I thank Dr Roderick Crouch, Mr Mark Vella, Ms Rachel Perkins and all the other staff involved for their considerable efforts in achieving this successful outcome. We are indeed fortunate at AIS to have such a capable, stable group of academic leaders and teachers. Our staff turnover this year is the lowest ever, which I think reflects very positively on the quality of the environment that we provide for teaching and learning at AIS. AIS is widely recognized as one of the top international schools in HCMC, and in many ways is the best. But we do not take this position, nor your thoughts about the School, for granted. We thank you, the parents and students of AIS, for your continued support of the School, and we promise to keep working hard to provide you with the best possible school education in HCMC – one that truly leads to a bright future!

From the Executive Principal By Dr Roderick Crouch 2017-18 has been another outstanding year for AIS, the highlight of which was receiving our accreditation from the Council of International Schools (CIS) after a week-long visit by nine educators in January. This wonderful result is the end-product of three years of hard work by many staff. We received a detailed report in late March. The report praised the school, using words such as exceptional and excellent. Further commendations were received on the leadership of the school; the quality and professionalism of the teaching and administration staff, and how committed they were to the students; and the standard of the grounds and facilities. Other highlights from the year were receiving the outstanding IB results from the 2016/17 cohort setting a standard for years to come; the Year 6 PYP exhibition, the senior students in their various maths competitions; the remarkable school productions, especially Mulan; and an incredible display of visual art by our senior students at their exhibition in March. There is no doubt that the standard of the performing and visual arts at AIS is amongst the best in Vietnam. Matching this has been wonderful performances from our swimmers and basketballers who have won a number of competitions across the city. Best of all this year has been seeing how much the students enjoy being at AIS, and how hard they work. Our parent survey showed that 95% agreed that ‘their child likes school’, 92% said ‘their child finds school interesting and challenging’ and 88% agreed both that, ‘the school expects my child to work hard and achieve his or her best’, and that, ‘the school is helping my child become mature and responsible’. The CIS report also commented specifically on the impressive culture of the school, particularly the respect shown by staff and students towards each other. Finally, the remarkable effort by our SRC in raising over 150 million VND for different charities this year showed how committed our students are to the wider world. As we enter the summer, enjoy the many memories that this Year Book contains. My thanks to so many from the ongoing support of the school’s owners as exemplified by the General Director, Clarence van der Wel, and the Deputy General Director, Nguyen Thu Thuy, to the staff, to the parents and the students for making 2017/18 such an outstanding year. I wish all members of the school community a fantastic summer holiday and look forward with you to the challenges and joys of another great year in 2018-19.

From The School Captains W

hat is it like to be a Prefect? Well, it means spending our recess and lunch, or even after school, doing our duties wearing a bright orange tie! Being a Prefect also allows us to experience the joy of helping others and working collaboratively as a team. The Prefects feel privileged to be able to actively engage with the AIS community in various events, such as the Christmas Party. 2017-2018 has been a spectacular year. As the Head Boy and the Head Girl, we have always felt privileged to be the student leaders of AIS. As the “face” of AIS, we were given opportunities to be the school’s ambassadors and meet different guests visiting AIS. As ambassadors, we have been very proud to introduce our school, all because of our wonderful students and teachers. We would like to thank all the teachers and students for their cooperation throughout this year. We would also like to dedicate a paragraph to our wonderful Prefect team. Our achievements would have been impossible without their help. The Prefect team helped out in numerous events and contributed to building school unity. We feel very lucky to have such a great team of Prefects, supporting us throughout this academic year. There has been progress made this year in terms of school unity through many other school events and Peer Tutoring, which allowed students to help each other with academics. From the Student Representative Council O

ver the past year as the president of the SRC, it has been an unforgettable and fantastic year for me to be able to work with a group of people from different year levels. Every member of the Council was supportive, outstanding, and diligent towards every major and minor aspect of the student council. Our school provides an environment to shape the leaders of the future, and it was an honour for me to represent the student body this year, involving students with different cultural values, perspectives, and aspirations to promote school spirit. Each and every one is given the opportunity to enhance their potential, and I have so much faith and excitement for upcoming years of this school, for all of those who have so much ahead of them. It is so difficult to encapsulate all the remarks that deserve to be acknowledged in just a few sentences like this. All in all, it has been an amazing year and I would like to thank everyone who made this year what it has been. I have had many experiences and memories which I will remember for the rest of my life. From Primary & Kindergarten Principal and Deputy Principal Ms Rachel Perkins

e have enjoyed a fabulous year in the Primary and Kindergarten and we have been very impressed with both the children’s academic progress and their personal growth as learners. Our Year 4, 5 and 6 children have taken part in their camps and they were challenged with being risk-takers. Some of the children experienced being away from home for the first time and many parents reported that the children came home with a new level of independence. We know the children cannot wait until next year.

As always, we have had several successful sporting events including our Sports Days and Swimming Galas and we were impressed by the children’s level of team support and competitiveness. They always try their very best and it is a pleasure to see how proud they are of their houses. We have also had several big successes with our Swim Squad both in HCMC and abroad. Our music program has grown from strength to strength and the children performed successfully and confidently in AIS Celebrates, Mulan and the last show of the year Aladdin. Our Vietnamese Department have continued to support the school by organizing our Moon Festival and Tet Fair to a very high standard. It was wonderful to see so many parents join in with these key events. Another key event for the year was our International Day in April, and the whole school community came together to celebrate our large variety of cultures and nationalities. English development is always a key to our success at AIS with many of our children making excellent progress in our English as an Additional Language Program. To encourage children to love reading we held our annual Book Week and it was a pleasure to see the children sharing their love of books with their friends.

n 20 May we enjoyed a fabulous International Day at AIS. Students came beautifully dressed in their national costumes or outfits in the colour of their flag. The Members of the PFG at both TD and TT set up a range of stalls from many countries that enabled the children to use their senses to explore many aspects of that particular culture. We thank the parents for their contribution as we tasted food, played games, looked at posters, learned about landmarks and animals, listened to music and watched performances and dances. The children had an amazing time and they learnt that ‘together we are stronger,’ and the beauty that sharing our different nationalities and culture brings to our school community. We were also lucky to have Queen Elizabeth from the UK, and the Sheikh from the UAE come to share our special day!!

he Year 4 camp was based in Ho May in Vung Tau and the children enjoyed travelling in a cable car to their resort. The children took part in a variety of activities including the exciting ride on the alpine coaster, the flying chairs, watching a 5D movie and swimming in the evening. The children were very brave as for most of them this was the first time away from home and they proved to be risk takers and they worked on their independence skills.

his year, our five Year 5 classes had lots of fun in Dalat on their school camp. They spent three days and two nights involved in various activities that were both challenging and fun. Through the activities, the children strengthened and built new friendships and collaborated well together. he Year 6 camp to Madagui provided the students with an opportunity to challenge themselves at a venue unique for its outdoor recreation. The biggest challenge for some children was being away from home for the first time. There were various activities which included zip lining, rock climbing, canoeing, abseiling, marshmallow cooking, traditional games and delicious meals. The Year 6 children and staff had a wonderful time!

PYP Exhibition - Year 6 E

very year, students in the final year of primary are required to do an ‘Exhibition’. The PYP Exhibition means a bit more than just exhibiting students’ work. Students need to demonstrate their ability to carry out an independent learning - it is about contributing to the society through their actions. This year, students pursued on a range of passions; helping the animals, reducing waste, helping the war veterans, cooking food for the homeless, teaching English to orphan children and promoting a healthy lifestyle. As an experience, the PYP Exhibition learning process could be somewhat challenging, yet rewarding. We witnessed how students matured both as a person and as a learner. Some struggled but others demonstrated excellent leadership skills and rose to the challenge. Regardless, all students benefitted from the experience - having developed their thinking, research and communication skills while learning to manage their time and show commitment to their independent learning. It also taught them to be problem solvers and resilient learners. It was such a great celebration of learning, in the end. A heartfelt thank you goes to all year 6 teachers and support teachers, teacher mentors, single subject teachers, parents, the leadership team and support staff, for all their help to make the PYP Exhibition 2018 a success. Mindfulness Program M

indfulness was introduced into AIS this year. Miss Natalie came to Years 4, 5 and 6 every week for 8 weeks. Mindfulness can result in higher levels of concentration and engagement. It also equips students with strategies to self-regulate difficult thoughts and feelings, such as anxiety. Some of the topics covered included; mindful bodies, mindful listening, mindful breathing, mindful emotions and sending kind thoughts. All the students enjoyed participating in this program and we hope that these skills will be transferred into their daily lives. “It was a time to relax and be quiet. It helped me focus with my learning.” (Minh Tan Yr 6) “I thought it was cool and unique. We had it after PE so it calmed us down. It helped me do better at my work.” (Gia Han Yr 5) “I liked it when Miss Natalie told us about mindfulness because I was never mindful, and I was stressed. It helped me to be calm and focused.” (Kanav Yr 4)

Deputy Executive Principal By Mr Mark Vella By the time this Yearbook is published I will have completed two years at the School. They say ‘time flys when you’re having fun’. The last two years have most certainly flown by. In fact, my partner, Ms Candy, and I are enjoying our personal and professional lives here in Vietnam so much that we have extended our contracts at AIS. A major focus for school improvement in the Secondary School over the last academic year has been the pastoral care system. The appointment of year level Student Welfare Co-ordinators and a full-time Counsellor, along with the introduction of horizontal homerooms, prefect involvement in Year 6 to 7 transition, and the provision of dedicated study and social spaces for IB students has enhanced our ability to support the physical, social, intellectual and emotional development and well-being of our students. Increased community engagement was another goal this year. Dr Crouch and I held a number of coffee mornings for parents. The first of these, which provided a summary of changes and achievements in the previous year and an overview goals for the upcoming year, was translated into Vietnamese and Korean for the benefit of our two biggest contributor communities. Other coffee morning topics included the middle school curriculum and the advantages of completing an IB high school education at AIS. Seminars were also held regarding selecting and applying to overseas universities, subject selection for IGCSE and the IB Diploma Programme, and transition from Year 6 to 7. Events like these allow a positive sharing of information and a forum for parents to ask questions and seek clarification. I would encourage more of the school community to take advantage of these opportunities. Last year I wrote “internationally, the past year has seen developments that do not augur well for the future”. Unfortunately 12 months on the same could be said. However, what I have been heartened by is

that, on an almost daily basis, the AIS student body demonstrates that they have the qualities, vision and commitment needed to meet the political, economic, social and environmental challenges that my generation has created for them. There is no doubt that the high quality, future-focused international curricula that AIS offers its students provides them with the means to both make sense of the world in which they live and the determination and ability to find solutions to the challenges their generation face. But it is what our students do outside of the classroom that continually impresses me. Whether it be the organisation and leadership of the Student Representative Council, the preparedness of the Prefects to give up their own time to tutor or mentor other students, the passion and energy which the Global Issues Network ( GIN ) groups put into raising the awareness of their peers and mobilising them to take action, or the endlessly inventive fund-raising ventures that Homeroom groups come up with to support disadvantaged communities in Vietnam – AIS students show that they care and that they want to make a positive difference in the world. As you look through the AIS Yearbook you will see not only abundant evidence of successes and achievements but also the extent to which our students value and embrace the myriad opportunities open to them to develop academically, socially, culturally and physically. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those people who ensured that 2017-2018 was another year of development and progress for AIS. Thank you to the staff for their professionalism, energy and commitment; to the parents, carers and volunteers ( including the PFG ) for their support and loyalty; and, of course, to our students whose friendliness, enthusiasm and respect for each other makes AIS such an inclusive and cohesive community. To those students, staff and families who are leaving AIS, my best wishes for the new school year and beyond. To all returning students and their families, I hope you have an enjoyable and relaxing summer break and I look forward to seeing you, and to welcoming new students who are joining us, in August.

English AIS ENGLISH DEPARTMENT 2018 – 2019 What a great year it has been in the English Department. Our Lower Secondary have learned how to structure paragraphs, review books, write and perform scripts, produce their own films and engage with a range of texts and styles. The Year 9 Cohort are anxiously awaiting their Checkpoint Exams for entrance into the big wide world of IGCSE. Our IGCSE students have worked hard in preparation for their exams. So much work and commitment is sure to be rewarded. tudents began their year in DP French ab initio learning about their families and the world around them. Intercultural understanding is shown clearly in the IB Diploma Programme through this course with our research of various countries and covering a multitude of topics in conversation. As French is related to many languages and is an official language of a number of institutions including the IB, the UN, the African Union, as well as 29 countries, it is clear that students will be able to transfer these skills in the years to come. Students have demonstrated their comprehension and creative work through reading, writing, listening and speaking exercises targeted to IB assessments and have had a great first year. umanities is the study of human cultures. It is a diverse collection of subjects including History, Geography, Psychology, and Economics, which involves studying how human beings engage with the natural world and with each other as individuals and as groups. At AIS, our study of the Humanities is greatly enhanced by the international character of our school, our teachers and most importantly our friends. ICT S

tudents in IT this year have tackled a number of new challenges to increase their awareness of the use of technology in the world around them, and particularly in the field of computer science. Older middle school students spent some time designing websites and learning the ins and outs of HTML and CSS. They have also built on their programming skills by enhancing their knowledge of Scratch, the visual programming language. Using Scratch, they constructed projects that require a use of fundamental programming skills. Younger middle school students also experimented by creating simple animations and stories. Other topics included discovery with an array of software and hardware. Students in Year 8 were able to learn how to use Scratch to program hardware such as LEDs, motors and servos using the Hummingbird robotics kit. Students in the after school Programming and Robotics ASA had a chance to explore their own interests including LEGO Mindstorms and programming in Python using a Raspberry Pi computer. he Geography course consists of physical geography (tectonic activity, weather, rivers, etc.) and human geography (migration patterns, wealth and development, resource consumption, etc.) As part of their assessed work, Year 13 students undertook their fieldwork project that involved development of a research question, a survey which was carried out in the downtown area of Ho Chi Minh City. Year 12 students were the first to go through the new syllabus which was re-written to address our even changing and complex world at both the physical and human geography levels.

We went on a field trip to Jinan University in China during this spring break. Eleven students experienced Chinese traditional culture such as dancing, tea ceremony and martial arts class in China. MUN MUN â€“ Model United Nations

odel United Nations (MUN) is a new club that has been making great strides forward this year. Comprising of students who are interested in debate and global action, the club aims to enhance intercultural understanding while enhancing research and presentation skills of each individual within a group setting. Students act as the delegates of various countries at the UN and discuss solutions to real world problems as if they really are in the committee at the UN. We have attended many conferences this year, most recently Saigon Model United Nations (SAIMUN) and plan to attend many more in the years to come, including some in other countries. CAS CAS – Creativity, Activity, Service

From knot-tying and lighting fires, to shelter construction and raft building – students left their comfort zones willingly, stepped into the unknown and not only SURVIVED but thrived. A fantastic adventure with long-lasting memories.
