Developing an emerging transportation center Florida’s SunTrax A partnership between the Florida Department of Transportation and Florida Polytechnic University, SunTrax is a state-of-the-art transportation technology testing facility that includes a 2.25-mile oval track on a 400-acre site. SunTrax created a high-tech hub for the research, development and testing of emerging transportation technologies related to tolling, intelligent transportation systems and automated and connected vehicles. HNTB served as GEC for Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise. HNTB led conceptual drawings and renderings, negotiated design scope for design plans and helped coordinate the press event announcing the partnership between FTE and Florida Polytechnic University.

Delivering dynamic management Virginia’s I-95 Express Lanes ITS HNTB designed toll signs, dynamic messaging boards and communication and power systems for a 29-mile segment of Northern Virginia’s I-95 Express Lanes project, which includes HOTlane tolling. The price-managed lanes required complex ITS design because traffic flows one way during morning rush hour and is reversed to accommodate end-of-workday commuters, using a series of gates to open and close lanes depending on the direction of traffic. HNTB designed the gates and their relevant dynamic message signs, as well as two types of closed-circuit televisions that use automated cameras to ensure that all vehicles have exited before the lanes are reversed. The cameras also assist the concessionaire by sensing when there is a stopped vehicle, an accident or debris in the roadway.
