HNTB is providing lead tunnel design and engineering services to develop a $1 billion, 3,400-linear-foot tunnel system connecting the new O’Hare Global Terminal to new Satellite Concourses S1 and S2. The system will consist of tunnel cells for a future automated people mover (APM); a secure pedestrian corridor; a sterile pedestrian corridor for international arrivals at S1; a sterile baggage tunnel; a tug tunnel; and a utility tunnel that will provide heating, cooling, domestic water, and communication system connections to the satellite concourses from the main H&R plant. Additional scope items include the designs of civil infrastructure, like aircraft aprons and taxiways.

HNTB led the design of a loop tunnel system that included the APM known as AeroTrain, linking all of IAD’s terminals and concourses. The design incorporated a pedestrian walkback, with two moving walkways and one central fixed walkway, connecting the main terminal to satellite Concourse B. It also includes a structural shell for a utility tunnel and a vehicle maintenance facility, which includes the APM control center, maintenance bays, a storage yard, and the future Tier 3 APM station. The underground tunneling used the state-of-the-art New Austrian Tunnel Method (NATM), tunnel boring machine and cut-and-cover technologies based on an indepth geotechnical investigation and analysis. The 5-mile tunnel system was constructed entirely under an active airport that remained fully operational throughout the project.

Serving as the civil engineer of record, HNTB teamed with HOK for a 10-year redevelopment program reshaping SLC’s airside and landside terminal areas. Scope items included design for a below-grade public circulation corridor and utility tunnel; apron and taxilane paving; airfield lighting; and new site-wide underground utilities, including storm, sanitary, water, natural gas, electrical and communications, pump stations and hydrant fueling system.

HNTB designed six cut-and-cover tunnels under the airfield at MSP for the new north-south Runway 17-35 construction, including twin light rail tunnels, a pedestrian tunnel, a tunnel under Runway 17-35 carrying a four-lane public roadway, and three tunnels carrying secure, two-lane roadways under taxiways and runways. The pedestrian tunnel accommodates a moving walkway to connect to a satellite gate and anchorages for lighting and systems. The roadway tunnels included U-Boat retaining wall sections at each portal to protect against groundwater infiltration.

FORT LAUDERDALE–HOLLYWOOD INTERNATIONAL TUNNEL
HNTB served as the engineer of record on a design-build team that provided the final design for the most complex aspects of the runway program — the bridge structures over U.S. Highway 1, the FEC railroad and the airport Perimeter Road — to accommodate the extended runway and parallel taxiway. The width of the multi-span runway and taxiway bridge structures forced them be treated as tunnels for the roadways and railroad beneath, requiring extensive life-safety, mechanical and electrical systems. The bridge structures are truly unique as there are no other runways in the United States that cross roadways and railroad tracks.

completed tunnels to our portfolio, with completion and substantial completion of WSDOT SR 99 Alaskan Way Tunnel and Crenshaw/LAX Transit Corridor projects. Additional complex projects involve cut-and-cover design, fire/life safety upgrades/improvements and underground transit stations and structures.
AUSTIN, TX
CAPITAL METRO BLUE LINE HNTB conducted a feasibility study for underground transit tunnels and stations and studied the connectivity to adjacent future development and public spaces. This study resulted in the inclusion of the Downtown Transit Tunnel as part of the preferred system plan which will be used by the future Blue, Orange and Gold lines.
LOS ANGELES, CA
CRENSHAW/LAX TRANSIT CORRIDOR HNTB served as the engineer and architect of record for three underground cut-and-cover stations for this 8.5mile design-build transit project. The project will serve the cities of Los Angeles, Inglewood and Westchester by providing a new transit connection between the existing Green Line and the Expo Line. Upon completion, the project will connect LAX to the regional rail network.
SEATTLE, WA
WSDOT SR 99 ALASKAN WAY VIADUCT PROGRAM HNTB serves as lead designer and engineer of record for the final design of this 1.7-mile-long, double-deck tunnel. Using an earth pressure balance tunnel boring machine, the tunnel will be the largest ever constructed by this technology, and will have state-of-the-art fire/life safety systems, including a singlepoint extraction ventilation system and a fire suppression system capable of managing a 100-MW fire.
SAN FRANCISCO, CA
CALTRANS PRESIDIO PARKWAY HNTB was the lead designer and engineer of record for this high-profile $1 billion P3 project that included three cut-and-cover tunnel sections constructed below the highwater level. The project team addressed many site-specific challenges including tsunami potential, poor load-bearing soil, high level of seismic acceleration potential, and high liquefaction potential in loose sands and uncompacted fill.
SEATTLE, WA
SOUND TRANSIT WEST SEATTLE AND BALLARD LINK EXTENSION HNTB is directing the engineering, planning and environmental services for a light rail extension that includes a 3-mile tunnel with six cut-and-cover and deep mined stations under downtown Seattle. HNTB is working on the conceptual design for various configurations of cross passages and egress shafts, retaining walls for tracks located in open cut, and support of excavation for stations located adjacent to existing buildings.
DALLAS, TX
DALLAS AREA RAPID TRANSIT D2 SUBWAY HNTB is providing project management, tunnel design, cost estimation, and environmental documentation services for a second light rail alignment in downtown Dallas, with an estimated construction value of $1.2 billion.
