Central States interns receive the full HNTB experience

kicked off with an intern and new-hire social event in Kansas City. Interns connected with department leaders, ambassadors and with each other. They also heard from Gretchen Ivy, PE, Central States office leader, who welcomed them to HNTB and wished them all a successful and exciting summer.

As the summer rolled on, interns stepped outside the office and saw firsthand how their summer at HNTB not only supported the company, but also benefited communities and connected cities. Donning hard hats and construction vests, interns visited several construction sites in the Kansas City area, including Monticello in Shawnee, Kansas, and the Buck O’Neil Bridge in downtown Kansas City, Missouri.

Back in the office, interns received the full HNTB experience as they sat in on weekly lunch presentations from all departments, including non-engineering areas such as accounting, corporate communications and public engagement. Over several weeks, interns were able to see how their work played an influential role in many projects and within the company.

As is typical of most programs, interns are fully integrated into the office teams and projects. Uniquely to the Carolinas program, four interns are imbedded onsite with a client team at the North Carolina Turnpike Authority. At the end of the summer, they will give presentations to the Authority’s board of directors. The experience enriches both the interns, who get an early look at how HNTB directly serves our clients, and our client, who genuinely support the learning environment they are part of creating.
