With Dwight attending Tippett Academy this semester, the kids of McQuarrie Middle School are on their own—no Origami Yoda to give advice and help them navigate the treacherous waters of middle school. Then Sara gets a gift she says is from Dwight—a paper fortune-teller in the form of Chewbacca. It’s a Fortune Wookiee, and it seems to give advice that’s just as good as Yoda’s—even if, in the hands of the girls, it seems too preoccupied with romance. In the meantime, Dwight is fitting in a little too well at Tippett. Has the unimaginable happened? Has Dwight become normal? It’s up to his old friends at McQuarrie to remind their kooky friend that it’s in his weirdness that his greatness lies. With his proven knack for humorously exploring the intrigues, fads, and dramas of middle school, Tom Angleberger has crafted a worthy follow-up to his breakout bestsellers The Strange Case of Origami Yoda and Darth Paper Strikes Back. tom Angleberger is the bestselling author of the Origami Yoda series, which includes The Strange Case of Origami Yoda and Darth Paper Strikes Back. He is also the author of Horton Halfpott and Fake Mustache. Visit him online at www.OrigamiYoda.com. He lives in Christiansburg, Virginia, with his wife, the author-illustrator Cece Bell.

The NERDS series combines the excitement of international espionage with the awkwardness of elementary school as it follows the adventures of a group of unpopular fifth graders who run a spy network from inside their school. With the help of cutting-edge science, they transform their nerdy qualities into incredible abilities, and the results are awesome, inspiring—and hilarious.

Matilda loves pro wrestling and hates anything “girlie.” Unfortunately for Wheezer, when a former-NERD-turned-villain gets extensive plastic surgery in order to become a cheerleader, Matilda must swallow her pride to successfully infiltrate the squad. The villain with pom-poms, Gerdie Baker, has created a device that opens portals to other worlds, and if Matilda doesn’t find a way to destroy it, the fates of all the worlds will be at stake.

A virus has infected Arlington, Virginia, home of NERDS headquarters, and it’s much worse than your run-of-the-mill flu. Instead of coughing and sneezing, the victims of this voracious virus are transformed into superintelligent criminal masterminds. Soon nearly everyone—including some of the NERDS team—is plotting to take over the world. And who’s to blame for this nasty infection? None other than former NERDS teammate Heathcliff Hodges. With more people breaking out into evil cackles every day, it’s up to Flinch, the hyperactive superspy with a sweet tooth, to stop the virus. He needs to destroy the virus at its source, and to do that he’s going to have to get inside Heathcliff’s head—literally. Flinch will have to miniaturize himself and take a fantastic voyage through the supervillain’s body to fight white blood cells, stomach acid, and a nest of nasty nanobytes in the hope that he can save the world from . . . the Villain Virus. Michael Buckley is the bestselling author of the Sisters Grimm and NERDS series and a new picture book, Kel Gilligan’s Daredevil Stunt Show (see pages 32–33). He has also written and developed shows for Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, and Discovery Channel. He lives in Brooklyn. Visit www.TeamNerds.com.

Mirka is back, and she’s still the only sword-brandishing, monster-fighting Orthodox Jewish girl in town. Or so she thinks. When a misguided troll aims a meteor at the witch’s house, the witch grabs hold of the closest thing possible to transform the flying, flaming rock—and that would be Mirka’s hair. The meteor is changed, all right: it’s now Mirka’s identical twin. Doppelganger Mirka, vowing to be a better version of the real girl, sets out to charm all of Hereville, including Mirka’s own family. Our heroine challenges the meteor girl to a three-part contest . . . and the loser will be banished from Hereville forever! Barry deutsch won the 2010 Sydney Taylor Award and was nominated for Eisner, Harvey, Ignatz, and Nebula awards that year. He won the national Charles M. With echoes of such classic wish-gone-wrong books as Freaky Friday, Half Magic, and Coraline, this terrific novel has the potential to become a middle-grade staple. Eleven-year-old Ruth Craze is pretty sure she’s stuck in the wrong life. With an absentminded inventor for a father and a flighty artist for a mother, it’s always reliable Ruth who ends up doing the dishes, paying the bills, and finding lost socks. Her brothers are no help (they’re too busy teasing her), and her friends have just decided she’s not cool enough to be a part of their group anymore. So when Rodney the Rat—a slightly sinister stuffed animal that was a gift from her favorite aunt—suggests a way out, Ruth is ready to risk everything. Three wishes. Three chances to create her perfect life. A million ways to get it wrong. Maureen McCarthy, a bestseller in her native Australia, is the author of Cross My Heart (short-listed for four literary awards), Chain of Hearts (short-listed for the Ethel Turner Prize in the 2000 NSW Premier’s Literary Awards), Rose by Any Other Name, and Somebody’s Crying. This is her first middle-grade novel.

More than anything, Maya wants to discover something incredible. Her parents are scientists: Her mother spends most of her time in tropical rainforests, uncovering ancient artifacts, and her dad is obsessed with digging up mammoths. When her father gets invited by an eccentric billionaire to lead a team investigating a mammoth’s remains in the Arctic, Maya begs to come along. Upon her arrival at the isolated camp, the mammoth is quickly revealed to be a fake, but there is something hidden in

the ice—something unbelievable. Along with a team of international experts, each with his or her own agenda and theory about the mystery in the ice, Maya learns more about this discovery, which will change her life forever. a dead hamster, turtle theft, trapeze lessons, and pesky boys, just to name a few. Nothing can stop these four fabulous friends. Well, nothing except for their archnemesis, the evil Modessa (a.k.a. “Medusa”). Somehow, Modessa has recruited one of the sweetest girls in the class to be her new sidekick. The flower friends are determined to save Elena, even if it means braving Modessa’s wrath. But it will also mean getting Katie-Rose to focus—she’s a bit too busy NOT flirting with cute-but-annoying Preston. The other boys groaned and Per aimed a spoonful of ice cream at Ole. The ice cream catapulted out of the spoon, but sailed right past its intended target and continued toward the street. They all followed its trajectory. At first it looked as if it would hit one of the many helmets parading by, but at the last second an officer stepped in front of it and the ice cream landed with a splat on the back of his neck. He stopped. Per took off running. The other boys stayed, but turned their heads away, as if they had always been innocently focused on the other end of the street. Only Espen stared at the officer, curious to see what he would do. The German reached behind his neck and felt the ice cream. Then he turned and fixed his gaze on Espen. The officer smiled and nodded in a friendly way. That’s what they all did. They all tried to act friendly. But before the smile appeared, there had been a moment, a look. It was as if the officer had seen right through Espen. As if he knew about the comments he and his friends had just made, as if he knew the dinner conversations around his family’s table, as if he knew Espen and his sister had a competition going for the best stupid Nazi joke, as if he knew that, right now, there was a stack of illegal newspapers sitting on Espen’s living room floor. It was a look like you give a dog when you know he has chewed up your best pair of shoes and you intend to punish him. I am the master, it said, and you are the dog.

A quick fix of

She stood out from the Monday afternoon hallway traffic like a gazelle in a herd of cows. She had big, blue eyes and blond, shoulder-length hair that was carefully styled to look carelessly towel-dried. She was thin and athletic, and I’m pretty sure her legs would’ve kept going if the floor wasn’t there to stop them. She was tapping her right foot, making the light blue miniskirt of her official Franklin Middle School Cheerleading ensemble bounce in a rhythm that hypnotized every age-appropriate male within four hundred yards. Her name was Melissa Scott; she was as close to a celebrity as you’d find at the Frank, and at the moment, she was leaning against my locker. “If you’re here for my school spirit, you can have it,” I said. “I haven’t used it in years.” She looked at me as if she couldn’t figure out why I was talking to her. Then it dawned on her. “Matt Stevens?” she asked. “You don’t know? I’ll try not to take that personally.” She pushed her back off my locker, and I could’ve sworn I heard the locker sigh in disappointment. “You’re a detective, right?” she asked in a loud whisper. “I have my moments.” “I want to hire you.”

“Why our family?” I ask. “Why does this keep happening to us?” My mother’s face sours. “It’s a curse.” A curse? “All right,” I say, making an effort to believe the impossible. Who am I to argue? I’ve been chatting it up with dandelions and doodlebugs for the past five years. Real magic must be better than being schizophrenic. “If it’s a curse, there’s a way to break it.” “Yes.” Her answer is a croak of misery. The wind picks up, and her braid slaps around her like a whip. The scent of moisture trembles on my nose. Our weatherman was right. It is going to rain. “What is it then?” I ask. “Why haven’t we already done it?” Her eyes glaze. She’s withdrawn somewhere inside herself—that place she hides when she’s scared. “Mom!” I bend over to grip her shoulders. She refocuses. “Because we’d have to go down the rabbit hole.”

This stunning debut captures the grotesque madness of a mystical under-land, as well as a girl’s pangs of first love and independence. Alyssa Gardner hears the whispers of bugs and flowers—precisely the affliction that landed her mother in a mental hospital years before. This family curse stretches back to her ancestor Alice Liddell, the real-life inspiration for Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Alyssa might be crazy, but she manages to keep it together. For now. When her mother’s mental health takes a turn for the worse, Alyssa learns that what she thought was fiction is based in terrifying reality. The real Wonderland is a place far darker and more twisted than Lewis Carroll ever let on. There, Alyssa must pass a series of tests, including draining an ocean of Alice’s tears, waking the slumbering tea party, and subduing a vicious bandersnatch, to fix Alice’s mistakes and save her family. She must also decide whom to trust: Jeb, her gorgeous best friend and secret crush, or the sexy but suspicious Morpheus, her guide through Wonderland, who may have dark motives of his own.

Jael has always felt like a freak. She has never kissed a boy, she never knew her mom, and her dad has always been superstrict—but that’s probably because her mom was a demon, which makes Jael half demon and most definitely not a normal sophomore girl. On her 16th birthday, a mysterious present unlocks her family’s dangerous history and Jael’s untapped potential. What was merely an embarrassing secret before becomes a terrifying reality. Jael must learn to master her demon side in order to take on a vindictive Duke of Hell, while also dealing with a twisted priest, best-friend drama, and a spacey blond skater boy who may have hidden depths.

See pages 4–5 for information on Michael Buckley’s NerDS series. From Michael Buckley, the bestselling author of the Sisters Grimm and NERDS series, and Dan Santat, author-illustrator of Sidekicks, comes this hilarious picture book starring Kel Gilligan (a.k.a. “The Boy Without Fear”) that encourages kids to laugh at their fears and celebrates the bravery it takes to try new things no matter how ordinary. Narrated by Kel himself as he attempts his “stunts” with Evel Knievel–like flair, the story unfolds as a performance in which readers themselves become part of the audience, encouraging Kel to get dressed all by himself (without a net!), eat new foods like broccoli (eww!), and take a bath (gasp!). Bold, interactive, and downright silly, this is a book to make kids cheer and attempt some “stunts” of their own. Michael Buckley is the bestselling author of the Sisters Grimm and NERDS series. This is his first picture book. Dan Santat is the awardwinning illustrator of Attack of the Fluffy Bunnies, Oh No!, Sidekicks, and Guild of Geniuses. Visit him online at www.dantat.com.

This hilarious, offbeat picture book from the creator of Marshall Armstrong Is New to Our School reveals that there is more to the older generation than meets the eye. Grandpa Frank doesn’t have any interesting hobbies, unless you count complaining about how everything was better in the old days. He doesn’t speak Italian like Paolo’s mom, or play the drums like Tom’s uncle. He’s just a grandpa. So when the young narrator of this story is forced to bring Frank to school for show-and-tell, he’s sure it’s going to be a disaster. But Frank has a trick—make that a tattoo—up his sleeve! And a story to go with it. After

Jane, the Princess of 8th Street, has many royal duties to attend to. Between having tea with her “ladies-in-waiting” (her doll collection), keeping up with her studies (Math for Monarchs and Pink Power are two of her favorite books), and dealing with her horrible toad of a brother, Jane doesn’t often have time to venture from her palace or socialize with other young royals. But one day, on a trip to the market, her mother insists that Jane go play in the park with the other children. Jane is shy around the other young lords and ladies, and things become even worse when she is confronted by Samantha, the Princess of 10th Street. Will the two princesses be able to overcome their differences? Will Jane finally make a friend? This cute and clever picture book proves there’s more to being a princess than just dresses and tea parties. linas Alsenas has written and illustrated several books for children, including Mrs. Claus Takes a Vacation and Peanut. When Andrew gets hold of a pencil, anything can—and does—happen in this innovative and artistic book. The story literally unfolds step-by-step as readers are invited to follow Andrew through flaps and gatefolds. After sharpening his drawing implement on the first page, Andrew challenges the boundaries of each spread by beginning with a line that leads . . . and leads . . . to unexpected finishes. Staircases become dinosaurs, kites become rockets, and even the most unassuming squiggle morphs into a giant chicken! This lighthearted depiction of artistic inspiration is sure to engage doodlers of all ages. barney Saltzberg is the creator of more than 30 children’s books, as well as a songwriter and performer.
