The Age of Selfishness

Ayn Rand, Morality, and the Financial Crisis Darryl Cunningham Introduction by Michael Goodwin Tracing the emergence of Ayn Rand’s philosophy of objectivism in the 1940s to her present-day influence, Darryl Cunningham’s latest work leads readers to the heart of the global financial crisis of 2008. Cunningham, author of How to Fake a Moon Landing, uses Rand’s biography to illuminate the policies that led to the economic crash, and how her philosophy continues to affect today’s politics and policy. Tackling the complexities of economics by distilling them down to a series of concepts accessible to all age groups, Cunningham ultimately delivers a devastating analysis of our current economic world. color illustrations throughout • 240 pages

An in-depth and accessible graphic novel about the current economic crisis, how we got there, and how all roads lead back to Ayn Rand

Just So Happens Fumio Obata Yumiko was born in Japan but has made a life in London, losing herself in its cosmopolitan bustle. She has a gallery show of her art, a good job, and a good guy she plans to marry. The culture she grew up in seems very far away—until her brother phones with the news that their father has died. Yumiko returns to Tokyo and finds herself immersed in the rituals of death while also plunged into the rituals of life—fish bars, bullet trains, pagodas—as she confronts the question of where her future really lies. Just So Happens deals both gently and powerfully with grief, identity, and the pressure not to disappoint one’s parents, even after they’re gone, in a look at the relationships that build the foundation of our lives. color illustrations throughout • 160 pages 978-1-4197-1595-2 • US $24.95 / CAN $27.95 6 ½ x 9" • hardcover

Out of Line

The Art of Jules Feiffer Martha Fay Introduction by Leonard S. Marcus Foreword by Mike Nichols

The first illustrated celebration of the acclaimed artist and writer Jules Feiffer

Over Jules Feiffer’s prolific 70-year career, his nimble and singular imagination has given us biting satires on politics, love and marriage, and the ids and raw terrors of American culture. That same sensibility has given us children’s stories of equal delight and insight, imbued with the author’s playful anarchism and illustrated with an exuberant line and explosive color. Feiffer’s varied output includes children’s books, such as the beloved Phantom Tollbooth, plays, movies, and comics, most notably his Pulitzer Prize– winning Village Voice strip. Out of Line is the long-overdue illustrated retrospective of Feiffer’s celebrated career, providing a revealing glimpse into his creative process by uncovering rare and never-beforepublished gems from his personal archive. 300 color and black & white illustrations 272 pages 978-1-4197-0066-8 • US $40.00 / CAN $48.00 11 ¼ x 10 ½" • hardcover with jacket

Ghetto Klown John Leguizamo Illustrated by Christa Cassano and Shamus Beyale

Leguizamo’s award-winning autobiographical stage performance, now adapted in graphic novel form

10

In Ghetto Klown, celebrated performer John Leguizamo lays bare his early years in blue-collar Queens, his salvation through acting and writing, and his colorful career trajectory. He brings us onto the sets of his films opposite stars such as Al Pacino and Patrick Swayze and with directors such as Baz Luhrmann and Brian De Palma, while also opening up about his offstage life in love and marriage. In this candid graphic novel memoir, Leguizamo offers a strong message of moving beyond self-doubt—and beyond the doubters—to claim some happiness. Originally staged on Broadway in 2011, Ghetto Klown won Leguizamo Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards before being adapted into an HBO special. Only What’s Necessary

Charles M. Schulz and the Art of Peanuts Text, art direction, and design by Chip Kidd Photograhy by Geoff Spear Introduction by Jeff Kinney Additional text by Jean Schulz, Karen Johnson, and Paige Braddock

Features rare and unpublished original art and development work by Charles M. Schulz— the only Peanuts book of its kind

Charles M. Schulz (1922–2000) believed that the key to cartooning was to take out the extraneous details and leave in only what’s necessary. For fifty years, from October 2, 1950, to February 13, 2000, Schulz wrote and illustrated Peanuts, the single most popular and influential comic strip in the world. In all, 17,897 strips were published, making it “arguably the longest story ever told by one human being,” according to Robert Thompson, professor of popular culture at Syracuse University. For Only What’s Necessary, renowned designer Chip Kidd was granted unprecedented access to the extraordinary archives of the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center in Santa Rosa, California. Reproduced here are the best of the Peanuts newspaper strip, all shot from the original art by award-winning photographer Geoff Spear. 450 color illustrations • 304 pages 978-1-4197-1639-3 • US $40.00 / CAN $49.95 12 x 9" • hardcover

Will Eisner

Champion of the Graphic Novel Paul Levitz Introduction by Brad Meltzer

A celebration of the life and work of comics legend Will Eisner

Will Eisner (1917–2005) is universally considered the master of comics storytelling, best known for The Spirit, his iconic newspaper comic strip, and A Contract with God, the first significant graphic novel. This seminal work ushered in a new era of personal stories in comics form that touched on adult topics from mortality to religion and sexuality, forever changing the way creators approached comics storytelling. Eisner went on to write and illustrate over twenty graphic novels, each pushing the boundaries of what comics could achieve. In this new monograph, noted historian and former president and publisher of DC Comics Paul Levitz celebrates Eisner by showcasing his most famous work alongside unpublished and rare materials from the family archives. Also included are original interviews with creators Jules Feiffer, Art Spiegelman, Scott McCloud, Jeff Smith, Neil Gaiman, and more. 200 color illustrations • 224 pages 978-1-4197-1498-6 • US $40.00 / CAN $49.95 11 ¼ x 10 ½" • hardcover
