Foreword of the founder We are celebrating with this edition 10 years existence of the hunting and fishing guide by Magic Safari Lodges. During all those years we have selected destinations of which we know they provide quality in game as well as in comfort. But we have also been strong advocates of conservation, hunting ethics and local community involvement especially in Africa. Nevertheless it looks like Western Governments relentlessly attempt to shut down big game hunting in Africa under the cover of conservation. They seem to put more value on the lives of animals than they would of humans in Africa. They claim that without their efforts these animals do not stand a chance. The consequence of shutting down big game hunting in Africa would be disastrous not only for the animals, but even more disastrous for humans. When one looks at areas where hunting is no longer allowed, such as Kenya, the results speak for themselves.
Outside of national parks, animal population has dramatically declined. This decline has impacts throughout the entire food chain and in the end is more destructive then helpful. Hunting brings a positive impact to the resident of rural African communities where the land is harsh and where it is difficult to make a living from agriculture. It is a source of income, provides jobs in hunting related tourism and brings money to communities for education of their children. If the wildlife population would not have an economic value then it would be seen as either a nuisance or a threat. I think Africa deserves the support of the hunting community worldwide and I plead that we actively participate in all initiatives taken by our hunting organizations to counter the anti-hunting extremist ideologists who are trying to make occupation as morally repugnant in the eyes of the general public.

Winchester cartridges are available on site for 12, 16 and 20 bore guns.
Our shoots are some of the best and most famous in the country. Groups of 3 to 10 guns usually bag around 1,000 birds per day or even double that amount depending on their shooting skills.

Hunts for plains game take place in an open (no high fences) area of over 40 000ha in the Khomas Hochland area in central Namibia. The plains game hunting area being only 60km south-west of Windhoek, the capital of Namibia, means that you will arrive at your hunting destination within an hour’s drive from the Hosea Kutako International Airport. The southern border of Etosha National Park is well-known to hunters for its great variety of plains game. Our privately owned land covers a diverse landscape consisting of Mopani forests, dry river beds, acacia woodlands, plains, mountains, valleys and pans. You can hunt exceptional trophies and experience the magic of real hunting. Gold medals can be obtained for gemsbok, kudu and mountain zebra. The Damara dik-dik and the black-faced impala are even exclusive to this area. Leopards and cheetahs are considered the jewels of Etosha. We have three types of accommodations, each giving you different experiences on your safari. One way is using our African safari lodge with all the five-star amenities typical to the Southern African triangle and with an uninterrupted view of the surrounding valleys and plains. For a more typical hunting atmosphere, we use a camp with several thatched rondawels, decorated with local artwork and en suite bathrooms. For those nostalgic for an ‘Out of Africa’ atmosphere, we offer a live version in the tented camp where as the night falls the bush comes alive. More to the west lies the Damaraland concession. As no fixed settlements are allowed, we use our 4x4 and tents to set up flycamps in a moonlike environment. All meals are served around a crackling fire under the clear African sky or under thatch in the central lapa, with unique game dishes. The Kalahari property features a combination of 74 sequential red sand dunes with the equivalent number of valleys stretching each over a kilometre wide. It is an amazing sensation to hunt in such countryside, as each dune hides a new spectacle of animals grazing in the next valleys. Here you can hunt mostly grazers such as springbok, gemsbok and wildebeest, all medal quality. Again accommodation can be provided in three different types of camps: the luxurious safari lodge with five-star facilities such as pool, spa and restaurant; the comfortable bungalow of the hunting camp with its magic lapa and boma; or finally, real bush life in a tented camp.

A few hours westward, we have our Namib desert property, which again is a totally different view from the Kalahari. Montanalike grass plains contrast with the red hills, which seem imported from Arizona. Hunting tactics change 100%, since here the hunter and the animals have little space to hide. So far our accommodation is in our dune hotel near Sossusvlei, 40 minutes away, from which we organise fly-camps on the property. All game here is natural resident game. What’s the best season for hunting? There is no good, better or best time. There is only a period that is less comfortable because of high temperatures and a period less favourable to hunting. You do not need to be an expert though, but let’s just say that the size of your shark will be determined by your patience and wisdom during this fight and not by strength or technique. Once the shark has been hooked, the pro will guide you on how to haul the catch in. If you want to change to edible fish for a day, you can catch big cobs as well as some locals, such as steenbras, galjoen or snoek. For the youngsters, the smaller sharks such as spotted gully shark are a good initiation before tackling the real stuff. Fishing the mighty Zambezi and the mysterious Okavango There are different ways to discover the unspoiled beauty of the Caprivi strip, locked-in between the Okavango and Zambezi rivers. They provide the perfect backdrop for some of the most unforgettable fishing experiences imaginable. We elected to build a lodge along the Okavango near Popa Falls. The fishing takes place up- or downstream from the lodge, guided by an experienced fisherman in a small but safe outboard boat. The main attraction is obviously the tigerfish; people travel the world just to fight this prehistoric-looking fish. Other species are different sorts of bream or buddle fish, and the area is also home to two rare fish species: the broadhead catfish and occelated spinyeel. Non-fishing activities include game drives into the Mgango game reserve or Caprivi National Park and boat trips on the river to view hippos and crocodiles. In contrast, the Zambezi has a lot more people living along its shores. A few years ago, we started to charter a houseboat in order to organise our fishing trips onto the river from this base. Experience taught us that the houseboat provided flexibility to move up and downstream, depending on fish density. Our success rate also went up tremendously. Although houseboat life is quite a different experience, all our guests just love it.

A swimmer and rugby player - Jofie graduated Windhoek High School as class president in 1997. He went on to college in Cape Town where he continued to play rugby and graduated in Hotel Operations & Management while working at two of South Africa’s top 5-star hotels. Jofie Lamprecht is a licensed P.H. in both plains-game and dangerous-game hunting in Namibia. Additionally he is a widely published wildlife photographer and writer. SOUTH AFRICA 600,000 acres FREE RANGE in South Africa! The animals that we hunt are in their natural habitats, which means that when hunting on the savannah, you will not find any that prefer dense bush, or vice versa. The animals are thus even more difficult to hunt, as they attempt to evade you in surroundings that they are well adapted to. The pressure exerted by hunters is low and the landowners in the conservancy decide their quotas themselves, aiming to maintain good trophy quality. The Baviaans River Conservancy The variety and number of animals, the beauty of the landscape and the size of the area are what this vast, unfenced area just outside of Port Elizabeth in Eastern Cape is known for. The Baviaans River Conservancy is a 450,000 acre unfenced area located two and a half hours northeast of Port Elizabeth. The conservancy is a varied area, with many different species. There are around 30 huntable species in the area, ranging from the relatively common wildebeest, blesbuck, oryx, waterbuck and impala to the rarer lechwe, mountain reedbuck and vaal rhebuck. There are also a large number of Cape kudu and bushbuck, which are darker and slightly smaller-bodied than their northern relatives, the southern greater kudu and Limpopo bushbuck. From the camp, there is a drive of an hour and a half to the coastal forests bordering the Indian Ocean, where we hunt blue duiker, caracal with dogs, Cape grysbuck and bushpigs.

Umkomaas Conservancy Hunt large kudu, nyala and bushbuck in this 150,000 acre unfenced area outside Durban! Umkomaas is a unique area in which you can hunt southern greater kudu, nyala and Cape bushbuck in their unfenced natural environment. Located in the Natal Midlands, it is a 150,000 acre conservancy which offers a superb and challenging hunt in dense bush for many of the area’s spiral-horned species, along with several of the more common antelope species. The low pressure exerted by hunters, good genes of the animals, food and age classifications contribute to making this area well-known for its greater kudu, nyala and bushbuck. Common reedbuck, impala, eland, waterbuck, oribi and wildebeest offer a varied hunt. In the field you will be assigned a bird-boy who will provide you with shot shells and refreshments; he will direct you to your shooting stand and load your gun. You will be constantly visited by your main guide who will be available to assist you with any need, even give you some tips on shooting, if required. You will start shooting early in the morning and will shoot until noon when you will be treated to an incredible ‘asado’ at the lodge, tasting some of Argentina’s wonderful beef and superb wines. Cordoba is considered the pigeon shooting capital of the world. The 50 square mile radius around the lodge is annually inhabited by over 5 million pigeons. The lodge enjoys around 20 shooting fields all within a scenic drive through the region. The program generally starts at 8:00 AM with a hearty breakfast and a short drive to the shoot. In the field you will be assigned a bird-boy, who will provide you with shot shells, refreshments, direct you to your shooting stand and load your gun. Depending on the time of the year, you will shoot until noon when you will be treated to an incredible traditional barbeque lunch at the lodge, tasting some of Argentina’s wonderful beef and the exclusive wine. Afternoon begins at around 2 or 2.30, and continues until 5 or 6 when you will return to the lodge for cocktails at the wine cellar and an early dinner. We ensure one freshly built blind for each hunter. Decoys are strategically deployed around the blinds and at a suitable distance. Wild pigeons are large and fast, which makes calculating speed a little bit deceptive. Staying hidden and still in a good blind is the key to success.

The Shooting For Big Game hunting, two different methods are used to hunt: Stalking and Still-standing. Experienced guides who know every acre of land are all local and will guide clients on a 1x1 basis. The day starts an hour before sunrise, after a good hearty breakfast. The time we come back to the lodge depends on the success of the hunt, around 11:30 am. The international chef will be waiting with appetizers and an incredible meal at the lodge. Afternoon big game hunt starts 3 hours before sunset. When the sun hides behind the Andes Mountains and you run out of light, you come back to the lodge for refrshing drinks and a heartening dinner. In the region, you will experience the best fly-fishing Patagonia has to offer: meandering spring creek special for dry flies, 20 inches rainbows at Arroyo Pescado, the hyper technical Rio Rivadavia, the crystal clear lakes or the amazing Rio Pico, territory of giants waiting for your fly. You will enjoy Corcovado River at the right time, and will cast for the biggest Brook Trouts in the whole Patagonia. The present facilities, were built on the remains of an old stone and wood structure that dates back to 1900. This was done with the intent of preserving the charm and history of the place. There are 6 suites available in a colonial style including stone, handcrafted bricks and wood, apart from the social area where you will find a large living room with a fireplace, a dining area, an indoor grill, and a wine cellar among other things. There are comfortable suites available, each with its own fireplace and dressing room. The shooting occurs on the shores of San Javier Rivers, over some of the hundreds of islands or over rice fields. We shoot twice a day, morning and evening, and there is plenty of time to relax at midday. For morning hunts, our hunters depart from the lodge in the dark, but after a hearty breakfast. Depending on the time of the year and the behavior of the birds (scouted every day), the time to get to the blinds will be from 20 minutes to an hour, including car or boat ride. Shooting over decoys starts at first light and continues until 10 am or after. Flocks of 20 or 30 ducks are not rare. Most days, duck hunters return to the lodge for lunch and a siesta before afternoon departure at about 3pm for evening duck hunts. Evening hunts last until dark. Perdiz over dogs is a great choice to hunt. They are fast and challenging. Britain’s or German shorthair dogs hunt with us. Duck and perdiz shooting can be exchanged for Dove shooting, making the hunting diverse. Dorado Fishing is a great and fun sport. The river scenery is phenomenal. We fish in shallow water with current. Lots of different fish can be caught like stingray and Piranhas. We will use bait or fly rods depending on your request. Catch and release is what we do. In the heart of a magical environment, Veracruz offers a warm and cozy accommodation combined with the best of Argentina’s mixed bag hunting.

Newtown The Brigands has been in the Bettws Hall portfolio for 13 years and has firmly established itself as one of the highest pheasant shoots in the UK. Home to the Corbett-Winder family for generations, William Corbett-Winder can still be found out hosting days on the truly stunning estate. The trophies acquired at Château de Laplanque are classified amongst the biggest in the world. Located in the French Vexin just 50km north from Paris, the Domaine de Montchevreuil boasts both small game and big game hunting for species such as fallow deer, mouflon, red deer and roe deer. With several generations of experience, the Domaine de Montchevreuil hunts have long been recognised for their driven, high-flying Reeves pheasants. In spring 2016 Mingary Castle will lowered its drawbridge for the first time in 150 years. Having crossed the drawbridge you enter the courtyard via a stone entrance way, turning the corner you are suddenly surrounded by the tall white walls of the three ranges. Entering the North range by the main door you are greeted by the warm oak panelling and Caithness stone flooring that runs throughout the entire ground floor. Climbing to the first floor you will find the large cosy sitting room with hot refreshments and cake to welcome you after your journey. Heading to the bedrooms on the second floor you find the MacIain room, the largest bedroom in the North range. It has two windows looking out to the courtyard, an en suite marble bathroom with a copper bath and its very own dressing room. Across the hallway the MacDougall bedroom, with half height panelling and crewel fabric lined walls is an intimate space. A small doorway cuts through the castle wall and leads to the most spectacular bathroom which has been created within the intramural passage way; nicknamed 'The Chapel' bathroom it has been said there is an old altar at the end of the room where the walk in shower now resides. The top floor, occupied by the McCain Suite is flooded with daylight, with views over the castle curtain wall to the sound of Mull and beyond. The two bedrooms with their hand crafted four poster beds have direct access to the battlement walkways and share a family bathroom, with marble walls and views to the stars.

It has developed in isolation from other sub species of Willow Grouse, which are widespread in northern parts of Eurasia and North America. Early on in the season, Red Grouse fly in their family group or covey, usually eight to twelve in number. Later on in the season, these merge into packs of thirty to fifty (or more!) grouse, on shoot days and nothing matches the adrenaline rush of seeing such a pack hurtling towards you at speeds of over 70mph. The season starts on the “Glorious 12th” (12th August) and runs through to December 10th, although the majority of Moors will have completed their shooting programme towards the end of October or early November. Grouse shooting is described as the pinnacle of all game shooting available in the United Kingdom and has to be experienced by every Gun.

“Brian load your 375H&H”, I requested when only halfway to the Buffalo bull he had observed from 800m back.. We had already passed up several like him.. but unknown to the crew, far beyond in thick bush I had glimpsed a large old Bull with huge horns.. Perhaps we had a chance, we just had to get past this medium Bull... And now appearing from no where... 300m across the black soil plain to our left was a group of about 10 cows and calves. They were trying to avoid this bull and head for water, they came trotting straight towards us..!! In a short space of time I could see action happening fast, “get ready to shoot”. Brian was confused. 3 of us now lay low with only a log for cover, and I motioned Brian to lean on that tree and get ready to shoot.. At what..??? He was stunned, a medium Bull perhaps 100m away in thick bush, and Graham almost on the ground and waving instructions... at what...?? Then it happened, the cows galloped straight past us, and the medium Bull in pursuit, and yep from 300m away the huge old Buffalo bull was at full gallop straight at us through the bush... One cow, now to our right, spooked, stopped and looked around, the young bull stopped at 20m and the older Bull skidded to a stop too at 25m, he was huge and turned side on, nose in the air... Shoot I quietly shouted to Brain. Plenty of confusion, Buffalo running towards and around us, hooves, dust and noise.. Now it was clear, right there, no long stalk required. Boom went the Mauser rifle, his head dropped, and Boom again as he regained his feet.. Brain concentrated on his trophy going from 2nd into 3rd gear, and the rest of us made sure we weren’t going to get trampled by the others running all around us. Brian was shooting and blood running down his face, the scope was too close for such a tall man. The Buffalo was down, but as we approached I quickly switched rifles, my loaded 500 Jeffery to Brain, and I spun his 375’s Warne mount QD levers around and off with the scope, then we swapped rifles again. Ok finish him with open sights.. and Brain put in the finishing shot on his big 102point trophy. What an exciting hunt, unbelievable, the observers just as excited. No 2 hunts are the same, always action, and I learn more of Buffalo behavior each season. Central Arnhem Land Wilderness: We specialize in Australia’s best Buffalo hunting with highly productive NLC licensed concessions of 840,000HA (2.5million acres). Large herds of Water Buffalo, some Scrub Bull (wild ox) and occasional Wild Boar. The grassy plains, rolling hills and fertile valleys produce excellent 90-105 SCI Buffalo bulls and some around 50” spread because of the open Savana. The thicker bush on the creeks, rivers and streams offer exciting close up dangerous game action, and we have stopped many close charges. We also offer excellent Banteng hunting at the THS NW Arnhem land concession. Classic Tented Safari Camps are set close to the Buffalo. Canvas tents, bunk beds, canvas bag showers, camp toilets, wood safari chairs and tables, quality meals, a cold beer, excellent Australian wines, smooth whiskeys and ice. Not a luxury Tanzania camp with extra staff. But real hunters will enjoy this old style expedition. Best season: June, July, August. Medstugan Hunting Lodge is located in north-west Jämtland, Sweden, close to the Norwegian border. This incredible building dates from 1896 and was originally intended to provide accommodation for hunters from other continents and for the nobility. Medstugan Hunting Lodge is now the heart of Fjelljakt’s hunting activities. Fjelljakt has been operating for over a decade, with a focus is on moose and grouse. However, it’s not just the hunting and the area’s exceptional game population that makes Fjelljakt unique. The company also offers a gastronomic experience, with the company’s chef selecting regional delicacies to provide the guests with a completely local culinary experience when the hunting day has come to a close. The sommelier carefully chooses the wines to accompany the menu. Fjelljakt hunts grouse in a classic manner, using pointing bird dogs.
