Foreword of the founder Congratulations to Safari Club International As you may now I have over the years in each foreword stressed upon the need for the hunting and fishing community to collaborate on our communication towards the general public. The President of Safari Club International, one of world’s largest hunters associations, has just taken the right initiative by setting up within his organization a Special Committee on Partnerships to work with other hunting organizations to communicate with the non-hunting public about the values of hunting. I quote out of his mission statement. ”There is lot of bad communication and very little good communication. With all the enemies that hunting has, communication is the key and the hunting world needs to communicate well if hunting is going to survive.” He refers to the Cecil lion episode and how remarkable it was for the amount of communication, mostly on social media and the astounding speed at which the communication grew and spread. Most of it was bad communication; there were very few real facts. Today nobody has been prosecuted for illegal hunting, but the point of the communication was not really whether the hunt was legal or illegal, it was about a negative social reaction to the hunting of a lion.
Most people are neither for, or against hunting, but most people are highly urbanized and everything that they know about animals or hunting is what they see on TV, the movies, or today on the social media. In order to deal with that hunters have to learn to be good in communicators, to be proactive and not wait until they are forced to defend hunting. They have to be out there all the time talking about hunting, but what to say and how to say can be challenging though, hence the need to collaborate on communication. Magic Safari Lodges wishes to take up the challenge by joining any coalition or alliance which would be formed through SCI’s initiative in order that our members with rest of the hunting community can act together with strength to get the word out, to use the tools of communication to protect our heritage, our right and privilege to hunt and the opportunity for our children and grand-children to do the same. We consider that better coordinated communication will help Magic Safari Lodges’ mission of protecting the freedom to hunt.

Wildboar Hunting France Located in the Sologne area, close to the Chambord castle, the company Wildboar Hunting France operates in one of the finest private estate where more than 600 wildboars are shot per season. Unique in Europe, Sabournac is a private estate which has been organizing mallard duck hunting for 25 years. This hunt both surprises and appeals to hunters who like to shoot several hundred cartridges at high flying mallards.
The red-legged partridge is a endemic to Spain considered the most sporting and challenging bird in the world?by hunters due to its beauty, audacity and fast and erratic flight. The driven partridge shoot is a shooting style with a long and deeply rooted tradition in Spain, which allows the hunter to enjoy the red-legged partridge in a far more challenging way, since the speed and height reached are unbeatable, putting more than one expert wing shooter to the test.
Sabournac offers only high quality, exclusive hunting organized and customized to meet your specific demands. The hunting estate is open from the first September to January 31 and can be booked for a private hunting trip of 2 to 8 hunters. As a “Browning Partner Lodges”, several guns are available on the estate. This free service provides an opportunity to shoot with topquality shotguns, as well as to avoid the hassle of travelling by air with a gun. Winchester cartridges are available on site for 12, 16 and 20 bore guns.
Our shoots are some of the best and most famous in the country. Groups of 3 to 10 guns usually bag around 1,000 birds per day or even double that amount depending on their shooting skills.

Le domaine de l’Ortolo An Exceptional Hunting Ground The Domaine de l'Ortolo offers an exceptional hunting ground boasting 2500 hectares of well-preserved ecosystem with a widely varying landscape featuring mountains, forests and bush interspersed with prairies and swampland. Some fields are farmed and sown with grain, providing welcome feed for wild game, and the olive groves are kept invitingly free of undergrowth. Here, visitors can hunt accompanied by the game keeper Jean-François and his team. Although the estate provides dogs, shotguns and rifles, there are also kennels to accommodate our canine guests. Hunting but not only...Big Game Fishing, Freshwater fishing, Golf, Horse Riding. The domain welcomes visitors for the hunting season from October to the end of February (according to the legal dates). Wild boar is the big game here and is hunted in the traditional local beating method, with a pack of hounds and beaters, or from a hide early in the season. Small game, like partridge, pheasant and hare live on the grounds, which are also a choice landing spot for migratory birds such as thrush, woodcock, doves and ducks, depending on the season.

HORSTMAN’S KODIAK GUIDE SERVICE Michael Horstman has been leading hunting expeditions in Alaska since the winter of 1979. Now Mike Horstman has over 40 years of experience guiding hunters and has been featured on the History channel’s show “The Hunt.” He started leading hunting trips in 1973 and has been a registered guide in Alaska since the mid 1980s. He earned the title of Master Guide (Master Guides must have been a registered guide for at least ten years, provide references from prior clients and have a clean record with no game violations). Horstman’s Kodiak Guide Service : hunts on native, corporation, state, federal and BLM lands that we secure permits for. On most of these hunts, it’s just Horstman, a client and Horstman’s dog Adele, a five year old German Wirehaired Pointer. Hopeful hunters from all over the globe take advantage of Horstman’s guided trips. In some cases, Mike Horstman hires a packer assistant who doubles as an interpreter. These hunts are typically based from comfortable, if something rustic cabins. Camps are accessed by boat or charter plane. Spike camps are used to access to the more remote edges of guided areas. Unless otherwise requested, all of our hunts are one-on-one, allowing us to focus in on the needs, interests, and capabilities of each hunter. The thing we are proud of : Over 40 years we have served successful adventures. Hunting the grandiose Etosha area and the massive Damaraland The southern border of Etosha National Park is well-known to hunters for its great variety of plains game. Our privately owned land covers a diverse landscape consisting of Mopani forests, dry river beds, acacia woodlands, plains, mountains, valleys and pans. You can hunt exceptional trophies and experience the magic of real hunting. Gold medals can be obtained for gemsbok, kudu and mountain zebra. The Damara dik-dik and the black-faced impala are even exclusive to this area. Leopards and cheetahs are considered the jewels of Etosha. We have three types of accommodations, each giving you different experiences on your safari. One way is using our African safari lodge with all the five-star amenities typical to the Southern African triangle and with an uninterrupted view of the surrounding valleys and plains. For a more typical hunting atmosphere, we use a camp with several thatched rondawels, decorated with local artwork and en suite bathrooms. For those nostalgic for an ‘Out of Africa’ atmosphere, we offer a live version in the tented camp where as the night falls the bush comes alive. More to the west lies the Damaraland concession. Hunting the Kalahari dunes and Namib Desert South of Windhoek we own two hunting territories, each very representative of their specific biotopes. The Kalahari property features a combination of 74 sequential red sand dunes with the equivalent number of valleys stretching each over a kilometre wide. It is an amazing sensation to hunt in such countryside, as each dune hides a new spectacle of animals grazing in the next valleys. Here you can hunt mostly grazers such as springbok, gemsbok and wildebeest, all medal quality. Again accommodation can be provided in three different types of camps: the luxurious safari lodge with five-star facilities such as pool, spa and restaurant; the comfortable bungalow of the hunting camp with its magic lapa and boma; or finally, real bush life in a tented camp. A few hours eastwards, towards the Botswana border, we have a desert property which again is a totally different view from the Kalahari. Montana like grass plains contrast with the red hills which seem imported from Arizona. Hunting tactics change 100% since here the hunter and the animals have little space to hide. Cheetah, leopard and hyena are abundant in this area. The accommodation is in a typical thatched lodge uniquely decorated in a hunting atmosphere. All game here is natural resident game.

There are different ways to discover the unspoiled beauty of the Caprivi strip, locked-in between the Okavango and Zambezi rivers. They provide the perfect backdrop for some of the most unforgettable fishing experiences imaginable. We elected to build a lodge along the Okavango near Popa Falls. The fishing takes place up- or downstream from the lodge, guided by an experienced fisherman in a small but safe outboard boat. The main attraction is obviously the tigerfish; people travel the world just to fight this prehistoric-looking fish. Other species are different sorts of bream or buddle fish, and the area is also home to two rare fish species: the broadhead catfish and occelated spinyeel. Non-fishing activities include game drives into the Mgango game reserve or Caprivi National Park and boat trips on the river to view hippos and crocodiles. In contrast, the Zambezi has a lot more people living along its shores. A few years ago, we started to charter a houseboat in order to organise our fishing trips onto the river from this base. Experience taught us that the houseboat provided flexibility to move up and downstream, depending on fish density. Our success rate also went up tremendously. Córdoba is considered the dove shooting capital of the world. The 100 square mile radius (60 km) around the lodge is annually inhabited by over 30 million doves. In the field you will be assigned a bird-boy who will provide you with shot shells and refreshments; he will direct you to your shooting stand and load your gun. You will be constantly visited by your main guide who will be available to assist you with any need, even give you some tips on shooting, if required. You will start shooting early in the morning and will shoot until noon when you will be treated to an incredible ‘asado’ at the lodge, tasting some of Argentina’s wonderful beef and superb wines. Cordoba is considered the pigeon shooting capital of the world. The 50 square mile radius around the lodge is annually inhabited by over 5 million pigeons. The lodge enjoys around 20 shooting fields all within a scenic drive through the region. The program generally starts at 8:00 AM with a hearty breakfast and a short drive to the shoot. In the field you will be assigned a bird-boy, who will provide you with shot shells, refreshments, direct you to your shooting stand and load your gun. Depending on the time of the year, you will shoot until noon when you will be treated to an incredible traditional barbeque lunch at the lodge, tasting some of Argentina’s wonderful beef and the exclusive wine. Afternoon begins at around 2 or 2.30, and continues until 5 or 6 when you will return to the lodge for cocktails at the wine cellar and an early dinner. We ensure one freshly built blind for each hunter. Decoys are strategically deployed around the blinds and at a suitable distance. Wild pigeons are large and fast, which makes calculating speed a little bit deceptive. Staying hidden and still in a good blind is the key to success.

The Shooting For Big Game hunting, two different methods are used to hunt: Stalking and Still-standing. The present facilities, were built on the remains of an old stone and wood structure that dates back to 1900. This was done with the intent of preserving the charm and history of the place. The Shooting At Veracruz you can hunt different species of ducks depending on the time of the year, the rosy billed and whistling ducks being the most common, along with some teals. Duck shooting features comfortable and well camouflaged blinds; quality specie-specific decoys and guides who will place you where you need to be to get the kind of duck hunting you’ve only dreamed of until now. The shooting occurs on the shores of San Javier Rivers, over some of the hundreds of islands or over rice fields. We shoot twice a day, morning and evening, and there is plenty of time to relax at midday. For morning hunts, our hunters depart from the lodge in the dark, but after a hearty breakfast. Depending on the time of the year and the behavior of the birds (scouted every day), the time to get to the blinds will be from 20 minutes to an hour, including car or boat ride. Shooting over decoys starts at first light and continues until 10 am or after. Flocks of 20 or 30 ducks are not rare. Most days, duck hunters return to the lodge for lunch and a siesta before afternoon departure at about 3pm for evening duck hunts. Evening hunts last until dark. Perdiz over dogs is a great choice to hunt. They are fast and challenging. Britain’s or German shorthair dogs hunt with us. Duck and perdiz shooting can be exchanged for Dove shooting, making the hunting diverse. Dorado Fishing is a great and fun sport. The river scenery is phenomenal. We fish in shallow water with current. Lots of different fish can be caught like stingray and Piranhas. We will use bait or fly rods depending on your request. Catch and release is what we do. The Brigands has been in the Bettws Hall portfolio for 16 years and has firmly established itself as one of the highest pheasant shoots in the UK. It is located in the Dovey Valley on the edge of Snowdonia National Park and it is this natural topography that lends itself to presenting pheasants at the pinnacle of what is deemed reachable with a shotgun. The birds themselves are driven from a mix of traditional wooded valleys as well as the vast, heather cladded Cambrian Mountain sides that rise high amongst this rugged Welsh terrain. The newest addition to the Bettws Hall offering, Plas Dinam encompasses in excess of 5000 acres of spectacular landscape with a mixture of open moorland, woodland, vertical hillsides and seemingly bottomless valleys. Gregynog Hall is an imposing Grade 1 listed Jacobean building that has sat on the same site for over 800years. The shoot is located just a stone’s throw away from Bettws Hall sporting lodges so is ideally located for access to and from breakfast and lunch by the log fire. The shoot itself utilises a long, deep valley with steep sides to present high and fast pheasant all in the shadows of the hall itself. With the aptly named ‘Middle’ along with ‘Ivors’ – is it understandable as to why this intimate shoot has a loyal following of returning guests year after year who are keen for their secret not to be revealed.
This 19th Century estate was originally laid out as a hunting retreat and is now the home of the Trant family. The hall itself is architecturally majestic and would not look out of place in the Bordeaux region of Southern France! Drives such as ‘Forest Lodge’ and ‘Fron Green’ present tall pheasant driven from game crop and a mixture of deciduous and coniferous woodland towards guns that are located in deep valleys to ensure birds reach the line at high altitude. As with all of our 6 estates, hospitality matched the sport, so Champagne and canape ‘elevenses’ precede a wonderful home cooked lunch back at the lodge before the afternoon of sport commences.

THE WEST COUNTRY The West Country and more specifically the Exmoor National park, is home of some of the most iconic high bird shoots in the UK, due largely in part to the deep valleys and undulating hills that present truly challenging shooting regardless of your experience. With scenic shooting lodges that play host to some wonderful lunches to re-create the morning’s excitement and to anticipate the afternoon’s adventures where it is likely you will be shooting some of the countries most infamous drives– due to the speed and height of the pheasants! The Estates have many hundreds of years of shooting heritage and lie in the depths of shooting country. All aspects of bio-diversity can be found here – woodland, moorland and wetland. The Exmoor National park is also home to a large volume of the UK’s red deer population, and it is not unusual to sight these magnificent beasts around the shoot when standing in anticipation of the hard flying pheasant and partridge from our drives. Some of the most truly breath taking scenery can be found whilst meandering through the streams, brooks, open pasture land and dramatic valleys. A typical drive would consist of pheasants being flushed from distant cover crop to then gain altitude over mature oak and coniferous woodland where they are hidden from the gun line until the very last minute before exploding high above the line of guns standing deep in the valley. A trip to the West country will leave you with memories to last a lifetime and yearning for a return trip.

The driven partridge shoot is a shooting style with a long and deeply rooted tradition in Spain, which allows the hunter to enjoy the red-legged partridge in a far more challenging way, since the speed and height reached are unbeatable, putting more than one expert wing shooter to the test. La Flamenca is our signature estate that we have managed four decades. Located in the French Vexin just 50km north from Paris, the Domaine de Montchevreuil boasts both small game and big game hunting for species such as fallow deer, mouflon, red deer and roe deer. With several generations of experience, the Domaine de Montchevreuil hunts have long been recognised for their driven, high-flying Reeves pheasants. Covering an area of about 200 ha fenced by wall, the area consists of deciduous forests, plains and game crops, all in a very hilly area which attract the most skilful, superb gunshots. Reeves pheasant hunting is very exclusive and the Domaine of Montchevreuil is the only one in France to organize those hunts. It's the only trophy bird with the tail can reach until 2m !! He is much faster than common pheasants and also higher flight. The best shooter will take 1 pheasant for 5 cartridges. Fishing for the Most Avid Sportsman At the Murtoli Estate, fishermen can also pursue their passion, with fishing opportunities many sportsmen only dream of. All year round, lure trolling fishing is offered for tuna, such as amberjack, leerfish and domti. In spring 2016 Mingary Castle will lowered its drawbridge for the first time in 150 years. Having crossed the drawbridge you enter the courtyard via a stone entrance way, turning the corner you are suddenly surrounded by the tall white walls of the three ranges. Entering the North range by the main door you are greeted by the warm oak panelling and Caithness stone flooring that runs throughout the entire ground floor. Climbing to the first floor you will find the large cosy sitting room with hot refreshments and cake to welcome you after your journey. Heading to the bedrooms on the second floor you find the MacIain room, the largest bedroom in the North range. It has two windows looking out to the courtyard, an en suite marble bathroom with a copper bath and its very own dressing room. Across the hallway the MacDougall bedroom, with half height panelling and crewel fabric lined walls is an intimate space. A small doorway cuts through the castle wall and leads to the most spectacular bathroom which has been created within the intramural passage way; nicknamed 'The Chapel' bathroom it has been said there is an old altar at the end of the room where the walk in shower now resides. The top floor, occupied by the McCain Suite is flooded with daylight, with views over the castle curtain wall to the sound of Mull and beyond. The two bedrooms with their hand crafted four poster beds have direct access to the battlement walkways and share a family bathroom, with marble walls and views to the stars.

It has developed in isolation from other sub species of Willow Grouse, which are widespread in northern parts of Eurasia and North America. Early on in the season, Red Grouse fly in their family group or covey, usually eight to twelve in number. Later on in the season, these merge into packs of thirty to fifty (or more!) grouse, on shoot days and nothing matches the adrenaline rush of seeing such a pack hurtling towards you at speeds of over 70mph. The season starts on the “Glorious 12th” (12th August) and runs through to December 10th, although the majority of Moors will have completed their shooting programme towards the end of October or early November. Grouse shooting is described as the pinnacle of all game shooting available in the United Kingdom and has to be experienced by every Gun.

“Brian load your 375H&H”, I requested when only halfway to the Buffalo bull he had observed from 800m back.. We had already passed up several like him.. but unknown to the crew, far beyond in thick bush I had glimpsed a large old Bull with huge horns.. Perhaps we had a chance, we just had to get past this medium Bull... And now appearing from no where... 300m across the black soil plain to our left was a group of about 10 cows and calves. They were trying to avoid this bull and head for water, they came trotting straight towards us..!! In a short space of time I could see action happening fast, “get ready to shoot”. Brian was confused. 3 of us now lay low with only a log for cover, and I motioned Brian to lean on that tree and get ready to shoot.. At what..??? He was stunned, a medium Bull perhaps 100m away in thick bush, and Graham almost on the ground and waving instructions... at what...?? Then it happened, the cows galloped straight past us, and the medium Bull in pursuit, and yep from 300m away the huge old Buffalo bull was at full gallop straight at us through the bush... One cow, now to our right, spooked, stopped and looked around, the young bull stopped at 20m and the older Bull skidded to a stop too at 25m, he was huge and turned side on, nose in the air... Shoot I quietly shouted to Brain. Plenty of confusion, Buffalo running towards and around us, hooves, dust and noise.. Now it was clear, right there, no long stalk required. Boom went the Mauser rifle, his head dropped, and Boom again as he regained his feet.. Brain concentrated on his trophy going from 2nd into 3rd gear, and the rest of us made sure we weren’t going to get trampled by the others running all around us. Brian was shooting and blood running down his face, the scope was too close for such a tall man. The Buffalo was down, but as we approached I quickly switched rifles, my loaded 500 Jeffery to Brain, and I spun his 375’s Warne mount QD levers around and off with the scope, then we swapped rifles again. Medstugan Hunting Lodge is located in north-west Jämtland, Sweden, close to the Norwegian border. This incredible building dates from 1896 and was originally intended to provide accommodation for hunters from other continents and for the nobility. Medstugan Hunting Lodge is now the heart of Fjelljakt’s hunting activities. Fjelljakt has been operating for over a decade, with a focus is on moose and grouse. However, it’s not just the hunting and the area’s exceptional game population that makes Fjelljakt unique. The company also offers a gastronomic experience, with the company’s chef selecting regional delicacies to provide the guests with a completely local culinary experience when the hunting day has come to a close. The sommelier carefully chooses the wines to accompany the menu. Fjelljakt hunts grouse in a classic manner, using pointing bird dogs. Hunting takes place in the mountains, in enchantingly beautiful surroundings. Moose hunts are conducted in two ways, driven hunts and hunting with barking moose dogs. The latter is a one-on-one hunt, which is the traditional type of hunting in this area and typical for Scandinavia.
