SUMMER HIGHLIGHTS OF THE LGA

While the sun blazed overhead and the humidity clung like a second skin, the ladies of the LGA proved once again that summer is no match for passion, perseverance, and a love of the game. Through sweltering days and soaring temperatures, our members stayed the course—literally—creating a season filled with unforgettable moments, fierce competition, and plenty of laughter.

The first Cat Fight of the season welcomed nine spirited players to the Highlands Course under a rare break in the weather—cloudy skies and no rain, for once. Ruth Nunes led the pack, finishing in 1st Place by topping her points by 3. Close behind was Arra Bolding, whose strong round earned her a well-deserved 2nd Place finish.

A cool June morning set the stage for our first 9-Hole Scramble, bringing ten golfers together for a round filled with smart plays and stand-out shots. Paula Hall and Glenda Hinton took home 1st Place honors, while Anita Gordon landed Closest to the Pin on Hole #2. Meanwhile, Natalie Teuton flexed her power off the tee, capturing Longest Drive on Hole #3.

July brought heat—and highlights. Ten ladies teed off with their sights set on personal bests during our second Cat Fight. Cynthia Samuels delivered a round to remember, exceeding her points by 8 and notching a spectacular Hole-inOne on #17, followed by a personal milestone: chipping in to par #18 for the first time. Roz Waldron also brought her A-game, earning 2nd Place after surpassing her own points goal.

Our second 9-Hole Scramble featured an unexpected twist—a last-minute lineup change meant one team had to play as a twosome, alternating shots to balance the format. Rising to the challenge, Natalie Teuton and

Cynthia Samuels emerged victorious with a +1 finish. Close behind, the trio of Paula Hall, Arra Bolding, and Deb O’Sullivan played a tight round to secure 2nd Place.

Beyond the tournaments, summer Play Days brought their own share of triumphs:

• Ruth Nunes and Natalie Teuton both birdied #17

• Patti Adams conquered the tough opening hole with a par on #1

• Jenn Harding wowed with a booming drive on #3 that left everyone in awe

The LA LGA proudly sent two foursomes to the Bent Tree Ladies Invitational—a day marked by drizzle, mud, and a whole lot of grit. Despite soggy conditions, everyone kept spirits high and enjoyed a memorable day on the course. Hats off to:

• Paula Hall, Jan Garbiel, Eleanor Gibbons & Michelle Maynard

• Patti Adams, Arra Bolding, Natalie Teuton & Cynthia Samuels

While great shots and leaderboard finishes are worth celebrating, the soul of our league is found in the camaraderie that follows each round. Mondays are for gathering on the patio, sharing snacks, cooling down with drinks, and swapping stories—both humble brags and hilarious misadventures. It’s this blend of competition and community that makes LGA golf such a cherished part of our lives.

Whether you’re just starting your golf journey or have years of experience under your belt, we’d love to welcome you to the LGA. To learn more, contact the Pro Shop and ask to be connected with our LGA President, Arra Bolding.

READING FOR THE AGES

The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny and Murder | David Grann | Doubleday

It was January, 1740. The British Empire was racing to mobilize for war against its imperial rival, Spain. The battle? To conquer or control larger and larger territories, so as to exploit and monopolize other nations’ valuable resources and trade markets. Chest thumping.

Encounters between the two countries boiled over when a Spanish officer boarded a British brig, accused the captain of smuggling sugar and cut off his ear, launching the conflict known as the War of Jenkins’ Ear—a bit of pub trivia that also left us with this story, which Grann describes as “one of the longest castaway voyages ever recorded.”

The Wager, a British man-of-war stuffed with 250 officers and crew - about twice as many as it was designed forwas sent on a secret mission to capture a treasure-filled Spanish galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans.” The mission was laughable in the sense that the Wager had to get to and go around Cape Horn through Drake’s passage, a wooden boat facing hurricane force winds, waves that could dwarf a 90- foot mast, and endless cycles of rain and fog, sleet and snow, thunder and lightning.

“Below 40 degrees latitude, there is no law,” a sailor’s adage went. “Below 50 degrees there is no God.” What there was though was scurvy, starvation, malnutrition, and interpersonal conflicts.

To complicate matters even further, sailors in those days relied on “dead reckoning” for navigation - dropping a knotted line into the sea to estimate a ship’s speed and using a sandglass to estimate time — further honing (or distorting) those approximations with their own intuition.

By the time the Wager breaks apart on some rocks off the coast of Chile in May, 1741, and the men must fend for themselves on inhospitable terrain, you realize that the miseries they have already endured won’t prepare them for the miseries that are about to come. You see the men starving, thieving and turning on one another. The Wager’s captain, David Cheap, apparently decided that only rigid rules and brutal punishments could keep

everything from falling apart — a strategy that clearly didn’t work out as planned. The castaways were saved at several points by Indigenous people, the Kawésqar and the Chono. But the Wager’s men couldn’t bring themselves to stop referring to their saviors as “savages.”

(It is precisely such unthinking complicity,” Grann writes of the Wager’s men in the final pages, “that allows empires to endure.”)

Meanwhile, the rest of the world assumed the men and their boat were lost. But almost nine months later, a remnant of the crew staggered ashore in Brazil. Several months after that, more of the crew appeared in Chile. Those survivors had stories to tell—and to sell.

Survivors included the ambitious captain, David Cheap, John Byron, a 16-year-old midshipman, who would become the grandfather of the poet, Lord Bryon, and a gunner named John Bulkeley, whose version of the events varies wildly from Cheap’s. Their stories, their “prize” and the justice each has sought brought an incredible loss of life for very little payoff. Still, it’s a rollicking good adventure.

Whether Grann is writing about the search for a giant squid or the presidential campaign of John McCain, you get the sense that he doesn’t dare to set sail with a narrative until he feels like he has gotten the fundamental structure right. When he worked on “Killers of the Flower Moon” (2017), his superb book about a spate of murders of Osage people in the 1920s, he struggled with the welter of research he had accumulated until he read William Faulkner’s “Absalom, Absalom!” for the first time. The three narrators of Faulkner’s novel helped Grann realize there could be three points of view in his own book — each section revealing another layer to the story, assembling a three-dimensional portrait from official records and what Faulkner called “a few old mouth-tomouth tales.”

If you love to play Pickleball or would like to learn, please read on. We have an active group of players at multiple levels, and play times for each group are listed below. We play at the Red Cloud Pickleball and Tennis Center near the Red Cloud Pool. The only requirement is that you are a Lake Arrowhead resident or registered guest.

If you are new to Pickleball or want to play for fun and exercise, please join our Recreational Group. The intermediate and advanced groups are for experienced players who want to advance their skills to compete in leagues and/or tournaments.

We want everyone to enjoy Pickleball and understand that play on the LA courts is ‘’at your own risk.” Players should come in athletic attire, wear court shoes (pickleball or tennis shoes) and bring a PB paddle, sunglasses/ protective eyewear, visors and/or hats. Players should be aware that like any sport, warming up, having the propergear, bringing water, towels, and stretching afterwards are all important components of a successful, injury free experience.

For more information or to be added to our weekly email list, please email the group leaders listed..

LakeArrowhead Lake Arrowhead PICKLEBALL

If you would like to join, please send your name and CELL phone number to Jill Rose (770-313-0073). You will be added to our telephone message list which goes out the night before each match and you will be able to see who has signed up to play for that day. This will also let you know if there are at least 4 people available for that day. Please come join the fun with us.

To check to see if a court is available, you may contact Membership at membership@lakearrowheadga.com or phone 770.721.7912. ALTA TEAM PLAY is based out of BridgeMill as Lake Arrowhead is outside the ALTA boundaries. Call 770.720.9635 or email pat.perry@hmsgolf.com.
