PARK & PLAYGROUND RULES AND SAFETY GUIDELINES Rules and Guidelines for this area include the Park Pavilion, open field, volleyball courts, basketball courts, and playground.

• Parks and Playground areas are private Club property Members & Accompanied Guests are welcome.

• Parks and Playground areas close at Dark.

• Members are responsible for their child’s safety at all times.

• Adult supervision is required for all children under 12.

• Pets are not permitted in any sand areas. All pets must remain on-leash while on BridgeMill property.

• No bikes, skateboards, skates, etc. permitted under the Pavilion.

• Do not use sidewalk chalk underneath the Park Pavilion.

• No food and beverage is allowed on the basketball and volleyball courts except in plastic sports bottles.

• Baseballs, softballs and bats are not permitted in the park/playground area, including the open field.

• No profanity is allowed.

• No running up the slides.

• The infant swings are for small children assisted by an adult.

• No sitting, walking or standing on the horizontal ladders.

• Do not jump out of swings.

• No hanging on the basketball rims.

• Glass is not permitted.

• Scooters, bicycles, strollers, skateboards, skates, chairs, vehicles, or similar equipment are not permitted on the basketball courts.

• BridgeMill's Park and surrounding areas are smoke-free.

• All trash must be disposed of in proper containers.

Members interested in obtaining a 24-hour access card may do so by calling or coming to the Business Office (M-F/9-5) and signing up for one. Cards are issued on a weekly basis and we will alert you when your card is ready.

HEALTHY LIVING THE IMPORTANCE OF SLEEP Sleep deprivation can take a toll on the body, mind, and overall health in ways that may surprise you. Chronic lack of sleep has been linked to colds, flu, diabetes, heart disease, and even obesity. According to research, here are 4 key health problems worsened by lack of sleep that can be improved by getting at least seven hours of sleep per night.

1. The Sleep Link to Colds and Flu When you’re sleep deprived, you often feel “worn down” -- and that’s a clue to your body being vulnerable to infection. “Not getting enough sleep makes you more vulnerable to picking up illnesses and not being able to fight them off,” says Donna Arand, PhD, DABSM, clinical director of the Kettering Sleep Disorders Center in Dayton, Ohio. “What’s going on is your immune system is degraded.” The less sleep you get, the weaker your immune system is, leaving it less able to fight off colds, flu, and other infections.

2. The Sleep Link to Diabetes The key underlying problem in type 2 diabetes is insulin resistance, where the body does not make proper use of this sugar- processing hormone. Guess what? When you’re sleep deprived, your body almost immediately develops conditions that resemble the insulin resistance of diabetes.

“In one study of young, healthy adult males, they decreased their sleep time to about four hours per night for six nights,” says Arand. “At the end of those six nights, every one of those healthy young men was showing impaired glucose tolerance, a precursor to developing diabetes.”

“We also know that people who are sleep deprived have very poor judgment when evaluating their own performance. They think they’re doing well on memory or eye-hand coordination tests, but they’re not,” says Arand.

“The memory is also slightly degraded when you’re sleep deprived, and gets worse the more deprivation you have.”

4. The Sleep Link to Obesity Can not getting enough sleep really make you fat? Several studies over the past decade point to a link between sleep deprivation and obesity -- in both adults and children. In one study, people who slept five hours per night were 73% more likely to become obese than those getting seven to nine nightly hours of sleep. In fact, one study found that lack of sleep was a bigger contributor to childhood obesity than any other factor.

Nobody knows exactly why this might be, but some research has pointed to hormonal imbalances as the culprit. For example, lack of sleep has been linked to lower levels of the hormone leptin, which reduces hunger.

The good news in all this is that you can repair the damage from inadequate sleep fairly quickly. “The system is very quick to respond,” says Arand. “For example, the young men in the diabetes study returned to a normal state of glucose tolerance after just a few nights of regular sleep. Many of these conditions will repair themselves -- unless, of course, you get so chronically sleep deprived that you’ve caused permanent damage to your health.”

Another study found that people in their late 20s and early 30s who slept less than 6.5 hours per night had the insulin sensitivity of someone more than 60 years old.

3. The Sleep Link to Brain Function and Mental Health If you’re chronically sleep deprived, you may think you’re still driving safely and performing well at your job, but you’re probably wrong. Studies have found that people who aren’t getting enough sleep drive just as unsafely as someone who’s drunk.

HEALTHY LIVING 10 TIPS TO HELP YOU SLEEP LIKE A BABY 1.

Sleep in complete darkness or as dark as possible.

The tiniest bit of light in your room can disrupt your circadian rhythm and your pineal gland’s production of melatonin (the hormone that induces sleep) and serotonin (the neurotransmitter that helps modulate sleep). You can also wear an eye mask to block out light.

2. Avoid snacks before going to bed, particularly

grains and sugars – they increase blood sugar and inhibit sleep, and when blood sugar drops too low (hypoglycemia) later, you might wake up and not be able to fall back asleep.

3. Skip watching TV right before bed or get that TV set out of the bedroom.

4. Listen to relaxation music– Some people find the sound of white noise or nature sounds, such as the ocean or forest, to be soothing for sleep.

5. Go to bed as early as possible because your

systems, particularly the adrenals, usually recharge or recover between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m.

6. Reduce or avoid taking drugs as much as possible

because many medications, both prescription and overthe-counter, may have effects on sleep.

7. Avoid caffeine and alcohol that may make you

drowsy but the effect is short-lived and you will often wake up several hours later and not be able to go back to sleep.

8. Don’t drink any fluids within two hours of going to

bed to avoid the need to get up and go to the bathroom or at least minimize the frequency.

9. Take a hot bath, shower or sauna before bed 10. Avoid changing your bedtime – Make it a habit to go to bed and wake up at the same time each day even during the weekends to help your body get into a sleep rhythm and make it easier for you to fall asleep

H.I.I.T. BLAST: Wednesdays 9:15am

High intensity interval training helps you be more efficient in less time. Short bursts of intense exercise followed by short recovery breaks. Bodyweight exercises, plyometrics, and other training techniques maybe used.

BARRE/PILATES FUSION: Wednesdays 10:30am

This full body conditioning class combines the fundamental principles of both Barre and Pilates. Each class will work to balance all muscle groups’ strength and flexibility, with an emphasis on sculpting long, lean muscles while challenging the core with each movement. This low impact class is great for all ages and fitness levels.

LABLAST: Fridays 10:30am

LaBlast is a ballroom dance inspired dance fitness program created by Louis Von Amstel - former Dancing with the Stars pro and world champion. It is partner-free and accessible for all levels of participants. You can be a seasoned ballroom dancer or an absolute newbie.

AQUA FIT TEEN INDEPENDENT EXERCISE PROGRAM Saturday, Sept 12th at 10:00am This is a free introduction to the cardio/weight room class. It is taught by a certified personal trainer and appropriate for all teens ages 13 and up. Chef Faye will be responsible for overseeing the menus and staff of Featherstone’s, in addition to dining room operations.

“We are excited to welcome Executive Chef Faye Foley to Featherstone’s,” said Sandy Miller, Food and Beverage Manager of Featherstone’s. “Chef Faye is extremely talented, with an impressive culinary background, and we are confident that our members and Canton locals will love what she brings to the table.”

Chef Faye completed her culinary education at the Tante Marie Culinary School in San Francisco. She worked on the west coast for many years before coming to Atlanta eight years ago. Chef Faye was inspired by the fresh, seasonal cuisine on the west coast and incorporated those ideals into her own unique culinary style. Her locally sourced, farm-to-table culinary philosophy earned her dishes the reputation of “West Coast Cuisine, East Coast Style.”

ALTA LEAGUE DEADLINES

JUNIOR TENNIS PROGRAM The junior program at BridgeMill is designed to meet the needs of all our junior players starting at age 5, recreational to advanced tournament players. The goal of the program is to instill a love for the game of tennis in our youth. We encourage and foster a healthy, active lifestyle that players carry with them throughout their lives.

Our program is divided into categories based on ability and age. All programs focus on proper stroke development, footwork, fitness, strategy and mental toughness at an age and level appropriate manner. Contact the Tennis Shop for class schedule updates, available space and to sign up.

EXCEL FUTURE STARS DEVELOPMENT GROUPS 5-6 years – This group is for our youngest juniors with little or no tennis experience.

Our goal in the program is to help children learn and enjoy the game of tennis while improving their overall athletic skills. We focus on basic motor skills like throwing, catching, running, jumping and learn fundamental racket skills.

The registration period for all winter ALTA rosters begins September 21 and ends October 16. This includes Adult Mixed and Senior Mixed (45+). Both these leagues begin match play in January.

Players on BridgeMill league teams must be Tennis or Golf members in good standing.

Captains must get approval from the Tennis Department before submitting a roster to the league. Posted in the Pro Shop is a list of players looking for teams and teams looking for players. Call the Pro Shop if you want your information on this list.

7-10 years – This group is for juniors with little or no tennis experience. We focus on developing athletic skills, stroke fundamentals and learning how to play points and keep score.

11-16 years – This group is for players with little or no experience. Players will be taught every shot, how to keep score, how to play a match. This group is great for those aspiring to play on their high school teams and know what they are doing.

EXCEL ACADEMY The Academy group is for intermediate to advanced players, ages 10 & up, who are committed to improving their game. This high energy group of players is striving to play tournaments, high school tennis or working to get a college scholarship. The Head Coach of the academy is Jennifer Pourchier who is also the Head Coach for the Reinhardt University tennis teams. One unique benefit of this is that Academy players often get to hit and train with the college players! Players are divided by ability level and age. Drills focus on proper stroke technique, footwork, fitness, strategy, and mental toughness. The group meets Monday and/or Wednesday from 5:00-7:00 pm. This program runs throughout the school year.

With the start of school a few weeks ago we wanted our community to know that the members of BSSL have been and will continue to keep our school age children, their families, our teachers, administrators, the cafeteria helpers, the janitorial services, and the volunteers in our thoughts and prayers as together we navigate the waters of COVID19 – whether it is in person learning and teaching or virtual learning and teaching.

In July our country lost an honorable and history changing gentleman, John Lewis, who served in the United States House of Representatives for Georgia’s 5th congressional district from 1987 until 2020. He served as the chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee from 1963 to 1966. He fulfilled many key roles in the civil rights movement and its actions to end legalized segregation in the United States.
