THE IMPORTANCE OF CORE TRAINING: MORE THAN JUST ABS

When most people think of “core training” they picture exercises aimed at sculpting six-pack abs. However, the core encompasses a far more extensive network of muscles that play a vital role in almost every movement you make, whether you’re exercising, sitting or performing daily tasks. Training your core muscles goes beyond aesthetics–it’s about building strength, stability and resilience for your entire body.

Multifidus and Erector Spinae

What are your core muscles?

Your core is made up of a group of muscles that support the spine, pelvis, and trunk, and they play a crucial role in maintaining balance and transferring force throughout the body. These muscles include:

Transverse Abdominis

The deepest abdominal muscle, wrapping around your spine for stability and often referred to as the body’s natural “corset”

Rectus Abdominis

The visible “six pack” muscle, responsible for flexing the spine and enabling movements like crunches.

Obliques

Are the muscles along the sides of your abdomen, responsible for side bending and twisting movements.

These muscles along the spine help with spinal extension and stabilization.

Pelvic Floor Muscles

These often overlooked muscles support your bladder, intestines, and uterus, contributing to overall core stability.

Diaphragm

The diaphragm is essential for proper breathing and also works as part of the core stabilization system.

train your core and B-FIT @ BridgeMill

WHY CORE STRENGTH MATTERS

Improved Stability and Balance

Your core is the stabilizer for your entire body. A strong core helps you maintain balance, whether you’re walking on an uneven surface, standing on one leg, or lifting a heavy object. Even sports and workouts like yoga, running, or lifting weights rely heavily on core stability.

Injury Prevention

A weak core can lead to poor posture and alignment, increasing your risk for injuries, especially in the lower back. Strengthening these muscles provides better support for your spine, reducing the risk of strains and chronic pain. For athletes, a strong core is essential to reduce the risk of injuries during dynamic movements.

Enhanced Athletic Performance

Core training improves your ability to generate power in sports and physical activities. Whether you’re throwing a ball, swinging a racket or sprinting , the core muscles help transfer energy between the upper and lower body for optimal performance.

Better Posture

Many people suffer from poor posture due to prolonged sitting and weak core muscles. Core exercises can help realign the spine, improve posture and reduce the negative effects of sedentary habits like back and neck strain.

Functional Strength for Daily Tasks

From carrying groceries to bending down to tie your shoes, your core muscles are involved in almost every basic movement you make. Training them ensures you can handle everyday tasks with ease, without discomfort or the risk of injury.

HOW TO TRAIN YOUR CORE EFFECTIVELY

To effectively train your core, it’s important to go beyond traditional crunches and engage all core muscles with exercises like planks, leg raises, and deadlifts. Incorporating functional movements that mimic real-life activities will enhance your overall stability, balance and strength. By focusing on your entire core, you’ll improve posture, reduce injury risk, and build a strong foundation for everyday tasks and athletic performance.

Dear BridgeMill Athletic Club Members,

Unfortunately, we have identified an increasing issue happening during some of these open hours. We have recorded numerous instances of members with 24-hour access fobs opening the doors to individuals without access fobs. This is a violation of our 24-hour access policy that our members agreed to upon acceptance of the access fob. Allowing unauthorized people to access to our private facilities puts safety and security at great risk.

To address the increase in these incidents, we have implemented a new camera system that monitors all access points in real time. Members found assisting others in unauthorized entry, and thereby violating the policy, will be subject to penalties that could include membership suspension for repeated violations.

It is our intent that the enforcement of these rules will contribute to maintaining a safe and purposeful atmosphere within the fitness center. Your cooperation and commitment to these guidelines will play a crucial role in upholding the integrity of our gym community. Together, we can create a space where everyone feels secure and can fully enjoy the benefits of a dedicated fitness environment.

Should you have any concerns about safety, security or behavior at the fitness center, please do not hesitate to contact the Fitness Center Director at 770-324-3175.
