GIBBONS & GERVICKAS WIN THE 2025 MEMBER-GUEST
After two days of golf and a shootout among flight winners, George Gibbons and his Guest, Keith Gervickas, won this year’s Member-Guest Tournament. After shooting a net 69 (3 under par) on Saturday, they followed up with a net 66 on Sunday to win their flight. This put them into a shootout with two other flight winners to determine the Tournament Champions. The shootout started on hole #1. Brian Schell and Jeff Bedard were eliminated by George & Keith. Brad and Matt Jones tied George and Keith on #2. Keith’s chip was ½ a ball closer to the hole than Matt’s chip to win the title!
Congratulations to Gennaro Russo. He made his first hole in one ever on #2 Saturday! But this was just part of the Member-Guest story line. Official Tournament
1st Flight Brian Schell & Jeff Bedard
2nd Flight Brad Jones & Matt Jones
3rd Flight George Gibbons & Keith Gervickas
activities began on Saturday with an 18-hole best ball competition, lunch and dinner. Activities concluded on Sunday with an 18-hole scramble, lunch, and the shootout. The competition in all the flights was close and the food prepared by the Club was outstanding! The general consensus of the participants (members and guests alike) was that this was truly an outstanding event.
Overall 24 member-guest teams played this year. Prior to the Tournament, the Club’s professional staff divided the teams into flights according to their combined handicaps. This helps to ensure that the teams were evenly matched during the competition. The flight winners and their combined net scores for the two days are shown below:
Chris Colello & Gennaro Russo
For the full results please visit https://www.golfgenius.com/ggid/hk6277
First, second, and third place finishers in each flight received Pro-Shop gift certificates. The Tournament Champions and Runners-up received a very desirable trophy. Congratulations to George, Keith and all of the other winners for their welldeserved victories!
Special thanks to the members and guests who participated. Without their interest and willingness to make this event special, it would just be another tournament. Golf Professionals Uel Kemp, Kevin Aines, and Dalton Turnbow and their staff. Chef Jason Danneman and the restaurant staff.

FALL FUN ON THE FAIRWAYS
The cool fall weather has brought out a wonderful turnout for Monday Giggle Golf throughout September and early October. Warm afternoons made for the perfect setting to enjoy laughter, friendly competition, and camaraderie.
On September 26, the Golfing Fore Children Tournament—which raises funds to benefit children’s ministries in Cherokee County—attracted an impressive 144 golfers, many of whom were LGA members. Congratulations to Eleanor Gibbons, Michelle Maynard, and Jan Benefield, along with their husbands, and Karen Helm, who all earned prize money for their outstanding play.
In early October, twenty-four Lake Arrowhead ladies participated in the Tee It Up for the Girls Tournament at Fairways of Canton. This special event supports breast health services for women in Cherokee County. It was a beautiful, warm fall morning and an inspiring and sometimes challenging day on the course.
A special shout-out goes to Janice Larkin and Jennifer Harding for celebrating their birdies—and to Karen Fullerton for achieving her first-ever birdie! Milestones like these remind us why we play: the joy of improving, celebrating each other’s successes, and sharing the love of the game.
Our final Cat Fight of the season took place on a gorgeous fall morning at the Highlands Course. Six dedicated players teed off in cool October air for one last friendly showdown. The competition was spirited yet fun, with each golfer striving to meet her assigned points. Anita Gordon and Paula Hall exceeded their goals by four strokes, earning a well-deserved first-place finish.
One memorable October Giggle round began with twelve enthusiastic golfers ready to play—until a light mist turned into a steady rain. Undeterred, they waited out the weather in the grill, where
Nadine Benger treated everyone to a unique South African beverage. When the skies cleared, ten ladies, Patti Adams, Jennifer Harding, Natalie Teuton, Nadine Benger, Arra Bolding, Cynthia Samuels, Janice Cash, Karen Fullerton, Ruth Nunes and Heather Gass, headed back out, a little damp but full of good spirits. The round ended with laughter, snacks, and beverages on the patio—a fitting close to an afternoon of perseverance and fun.
Whether you’re new to the game or a seasoned player, there’s a place for you in the LGA. To learn more, contact the Pro Shop and ask to be connected with our President, Arra Bolding. We’d love to welcome you to the fun, friendship, and competition that make our group so special.

READING
FOR THE AGES by
You are Here | David Nicholls | Harper
David Nicholls’s newest novel takes place almost entirely during a guided, days-long walk through the English countryside, past perilous crags, moors and villages. It starts as a group of four single people, a married couple, and a teenager, but the dreary, soggy English weather causes one after another to drop out. That leaves Michael Bradshaw, a geography teacher and Marnie Walsh, a freelance copy editor, both recently divorced.
Michael, while morosely pining for his ex, still becomes a sturdy and slyly amusing authority figure, his journey “the kind of obsessive project that overtakes men in the middle of life.” He believes that “stepping outside transformed loneliness into solitude.” In fact, he had intended to take the coast-to-coast walk alone.
Marnie is a witty, cranky, near-agoraphobe. She grew up so obsessed with books that “my parents actually told me to read less.” She admits that she sometimes wished she were an orphan, although “only for the narrative possibilities.” Her job as a copy editor can be done completely in solitude and the agreement to take part in this journey is a real stretch for her. She agrees to go because of her oldest and best friend Cleo, but Cleo is very successful, and the qualities that had brought this success “sometimes left Marnie feeling daunted, as if their friendship was a job for which she must continually apply.”
But agree she eventually does. And she compensates by doing tons of research before she shops for the journey, buying everything in sight and stuffing it into her backpack, and at the very beginning of the journey, “she thought she might pass out in the queue for coffee, roll backwards on to her pack, arms and legs waving uselessly, a beetle in a shoebox.”
Marnie’s inner dialogue is laugh-out-loud hilarious throughout the book, and the author’s descriptions of Michael’s thoughts are equally brilliant. “At Christmas, Mum had a habit of picking up wrapping paper and smoothing it out to use again and his skin had taken on that quality, especially around his eyes, of tissue paper used more than once.”
Marnie and Michael keep coming closer, almost falling into each other’s arms and verging on passion without quite crossing the finish line. But in David Nicholl’s hands, this works, because each is such good company for the other and for the reader.
Jeanne Schwartz
Collins
They force themselves to listen to each other’s playlists, a nightmarish test of compatibility. And they share recaps of their capsized marriages: Marnie cannot help but try to make her story the stuff of comedy clubs. But Michael is less able to share. He collects pebbles along the walk to convince himself that he’s still functional, not “cracked and vulnerable, like a cup with a glued-on handle.”
They discuss the children they never had, the life that others seem to silently criticize. Marnie says: “There’s a kind of tyranny…that life has to be full, like your life’s a hole that you have to keep filling, a leaky bucket, and not just fulfilled, but seen to be fulfilled.”
As the walk grows soggier, and Marnie keeps deferring her decision to leave the hike in order to spend more time with Michael, the “know it’s coming” ending of the book does not exactly follow the path of a rom-com. But…
If you’re in the mood for a grown-up romance, gentle, charming, introspective, You Are Here delivers. It’s perfect for fans of slow-burn love stories, long walks, and characters who find their way back to themselves before they find each other.
It’s a book about second chances, quiet companionship, and the healing power of nature, and love. It won’t sweep you off your feet, but it might walk beside you for a while, and leave you feeling a little lighter by the end.
David Nicholls has written six novels. His third, One Day (2009), became an international bestseller and has sold over six million copies worldwide, being translated into 40 languages. That novel, which follows the lives of two characters on the same day each year, received critical acclaim. A film adaptation was released in 2011, starring Anne Hathaway. In 2024, a 14-part Netflix adaptation premiered, reaching the top 10 in 89 countries and garnering widespread acclaim.[5]
Nicholl’s novels are about love and the experience of love in various life stages – with protagonists ranging from Douglas (58) at the end of his fourth novel Us (2014), to Charlie (16) at the start of his fifth novel Sweet Sorrow (2019), and Marnie (38) and Michael (42) in You Are Here (2024).[5]
HOLIDAY SAFETY
by Rebecca Strobl, CPP, EMT-I | rstrobl@newdayeduationandmotivation.com
This is the time of the year when family dinners, holiday parties and social gatherings fill our calendars. We stock up of the pantries with all the holiday feast favorites and get our fireplaces ready for many cozy evening fires. The purpose of this article is to help the reader practice safety during this special time of year.
Now is time to ensure you have completed your fire safety checklist for your homes before the family members, friends and holiday festivities fill your homes. The first item on the checklist should encompass a fire escape plan being created, practiced and posted in your home for visitors to see in the event of a house fire. The U.S. Fire Administration (https://www.usfa.fema.gov/prevention/ home-fires/prepare-for-fire/home-fire-escape-plans/) has a great article about how to make a fire escape plan you’re your family a fun activity for everyone.
The next item on the holiday fire safety checklist is to ensure your fire place is ready for safe fires and everyone in the home knows how to safely operate it. More than one third of Americans utilize their fireplaces as their primary heating source. These types of heating fires account for 32% of residential home fires every year in the US. It is important when burning wood or propane in the fireplace, safety is a top priority (https://www.ready.gov/ home-fires). (https://news.gng.com/warmth-and-safety-balanceyour-home) and Direct Energy have some great info pieces regarding fireplace safety.
Many of our favorite stores this time of year offer some delightful smelling candles to complement our holiday decorations. Another item on the holiday fire safety checklist is candle safety. Around 5,830 home structure fires are caused by candle fires each year in the United States (https://www.nfpa.org/education-and-research/ home-fire-safety/candles). Often, these fires are started because individuals fail to apply basic candle burning safety principles. The National Candle Association (https://www.nfpa.org/education-andresearch/home-fire-safety/candles) life-saving knowledge.
The last item to check on our holiday fire safety checklist is live Christmas tree maintenance. Each year in the US fire departments respond to around 210 house fires that resulted from the family’s Christmas tree catching on fire. Dry Christmas trees anywhere in the home (including the garage after Christmas) represent a very serious fire danger to the reader’s home. FEMA and the U.S. Fire Administration has published a great article (http://www.usfa. fema.gov/citizens/home_fire_prev/holiday-seasonal/holiday.shtm) about practicing fire safety this holiday season and at the bottom of this article they have an enlightening video of how quickly a 100% watered Christmas Tree verses a dry one burns. Also check out National Fire Protection Association’s article (http://www.nfpa.org/ safety-information/for-consumers/holidays/christmas-tree-fires/ christmas-tree-safety-tips) about practicing Christmas Tree safety before you select that perfect live Christmas tree.
Happy Holidays!
THANKSGIVING
Thanksgiving is a time
When we remember all the year’s dimes. We look back and see God’s hand That helped us throughout the year to stand.
HE gave us energy
When we were filled with lethargy. HE put food on our table
When we weren’t able, HE gave us hope
When we thought we could no longer cope, HE watched over us When we were in a great fuss. HE once again kept us alive
So, we could have another year to strive To thank HIM for all HE does for us each day Even if our day tends to sway.

Water the holiday tree so it does not become dry And with open flames fry, Be sure to turn off your oven when the delicious dinner is done So, the Fire Department to your home does not come, Blow out the candle’s flames when you go to sleep So that at the loss of your home to fire you do not weep, Annually inspect your chimney to ensure it is clean
So, with peace of mind, you can enjoy warm fires in their brilliant sheen, Fill your home with smoke detectors to alert for smoke So, if fire fills your home, their alarms will sound too they will help you quickly awake, Be sure to practice fire escape drills at work and at home
So, you will not panic when you see fires rage that have the power to melt chrome.
If you love to play Pickleball or would like to learn, please read on. We have an active group of players at multiple levels, and play times for each group are listed below. We play at the Red Cloud Pickleball and Tennis Center near the Red Cloud Pool. The only requirement is that you are a Lake Arrowhead resident or registered guest.
If you are new to Pickleball or want to play for fun and exercise, please join our Recreational Group. The intermediate and advanced groups are for experienced players who want to advance their skills to compete in leagues and/or tournaments.
We want everyone to enjoy Pickleball and understand that play on the LA courts is ‘’at your own risk.” Players should come in athletic attire, wear court shoes (pickleball or tennis shoes) and bring a PB paddle, sunglasses/ protective eyewear, visors and/or hats. Players should be aware that like any sport, warming up, having the proper gear, bringing water, towels, and stretching afterwards are all important components of a successful, injury free experience.
For more information or to be added to our weekly email list, please email the group leaders listed..
