33RD LAKE ARROWHEAD CHURCH GOLFING FORE CHILDREN GOLF TOURNAMENT

Edited and Reported by Marilyn Biviano, Mike Gibney, Nikkie Frank, Monty Watson, and Jill Strickland.

Photographs by Tony Williams, Kitty Williams, Marilyn Biviano, Rob Petmecky, Mike Gibney, Jessica Duetta, and the in memoriam families.

What were you doing in 1989? Lake Arrowhead Church was holding its first Annual Golfing Fore Children Charity Tournament. Over the years, many ministries have benefited from the proceeds. The secret to the success lies right here in the Lake Arrowhead community.

Lake Arrowhead Church announced it raised over $104,000 for at the 33rd annual Golfing Fore Children tournament held on September 24, 2022. This is a significant increase over the contributions raised in previous years. On behalf of Marcia Terry (co-chair) and myself, we wish to express our sincere gratitude to the Lake Arrowhead community for your continued support. This is a very special community, full of care, love, and a genuine interest in helping the at-risk children in our community.

The Lake Arrowhead Church gives 100% of the funds raised to four local children’s organizations described in the following article. The four organizations are well equipped to help children in crisis and provide opportunities to change the trajectory of their young lives. As a community, we should feel good that so many kids will be helped through our gifts.

A special thanks to the many donors, hole-in-one sponsors – Day’s Chevrolet of Jasper, Shottenkirk of Canton, and Dixon Golf ($1,000 American Express Card), the nine Gold Sponsors, 13 Corporate sponsors, 220 hole and tee sponsors, and 140 golfers. In addition, we had over 35 volunteers that made the tournament run smoothly and successfully.

There were numerous heart-felt moments for me. The in-memoriam signs honoring those recently passed in our community, witnessing all the smiling faces of friends, and seeing so many volunteers working hard for the benefit of others. As Jesus commands us, "Love one another as I have loved you."

This was on full display and is my most treasured moment of this glorious day. Thanks to Uel Kemp and his entire staff for managing and hosting Golfing Fore Children at the beautiful Lake Arrowhead (Highlands) Golf Course and Clubhouse. With a pending hurricane, Uel found a way to accommodate so many golfers.

Chef Jason Danneman, Dining Room Manager Caroline Crowson, and their staff provided excellent golfing support, lunch, and a memorable awards ceremony.

Lake Arrowhead Church and Golfing Fore Children

“Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless. Uphold justice for the poor and oppressed. Rescue the weak and needy” (Psalm 82:3-4). That’s the heart behind the 33rd Annual Golfing Fore Children tournament sponsored by Lake Arrowhead Church. Helping those in need is the reason we sponsor this golf tournament year after year.

This year’s tournament was an example of community at its best. Nothing is better than when a community rallies together to help others. The missions partners of our church that received the funds you helped raise include – Goshen Valley Boy’s Ranch, MUST Ministries, Fellowship of Christian Athletes-Cherokee County, and the Student Services Department of Cherokee County Schools. In their unique ways, each of these organizations serves needy and vulnerable children in our county.

Jesus tells us to serve “the least of these” (Matthew 25:40). That would certainly include the many children in our county in need of food, clothing, shelter, and love. Jesus also said that we honor Him when we help those in need. When we serve “the least of these,” it honors Him, it pleases Him, and it is the compassionate thing to do.

As a church in our community, we are called and compelled to teach God’s truth and to share God’s love. Thanks to each of you for helping us do that by participating in this year’s golf tournament. As the Bible says, may we continue to “do good to others, to be generous and willing to share” (1 Timothy 6:1718). God bless each of you.

LAKE ARROWHEAD CHURCH (LAC) GOLFING FORE CHILDREN RECIPIENT ORGANIZATIONS

Thanks to everyone who participated in the 33rd Annual Lake Arrowhead Church Golfing Fore Children golf tournament. The Bible says, “Be generous and willing to share.” Because so many golfers, sponsors, and friends in our community were “generous and willing to share,” this year’s tournament will impact thousands of needy children this coming year.

The money raised from this event is solely dedicated to helping children. The church partners with these four recipients that will receive these funds – Goshen Valley Foundation, MUST Ministries, Fellowship of Christian Athletes-Cherokee County, and Cherokee County Schools Student Services.

GOSHEN VALLEY – Goshen is committed to providing the best possible residential foster care in Georgia. Their mission is to provide hope and healing to foster youth and vulnerable families and to cultivate personal healing and generational change. The trauma and abuse many children experience often leads to daunting statistics – low graduation rates, high incarceration rates, homelessness, substance abuse, and unemployment. Goshen Valley is committed to changing that reality. The 115 children in their residential program experience the safety of a home, the love of a family, and the hope of a future. Goshen has also launched a community therapeutic services program that provided mental health services to over 1,600 vulnerable families this past year. Lake Arrowhead Church is proud to partner with Goshen. To learn more go to www. goshenvalley.org.

MUST MINISTRIES – MUST Ministries (MUST) brings help and hope to some of the most vulnerable and needy families in Cherokee County. MUST provides food, clothing, housing, and workforce development to thousands each year in our county. This past year, MUST served over 5,400 people, half of those being children, and distributed more than 266,000 pounds of food to needy families in our county. This year, MUST opened a state-of-the-art facility with 136 beds designed to house more and more families in need of transitional housing. MUST also provides a variety of workforce development classes and assisted in placing over 800 people in new jobs this year. Lake Arrowhead Church is proud to partner with MUST as they provide help and hope to many in our community. To learn more go to www.mustministries.org.

PAGE 12 | NOVEMBER // DECEMBER 2022

FELLOWSHIP OF CHRISTIAN ATHLETES

– FCA is a Christian sports ministry challenging students, athletes, and coaches to believe the Gospel and to grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ. FCA reaches into schools across the United States. Locally, the goal of FCA is to bring the Gospel to every student, athlete, and coach in Cherokee County, and thousands are impacted each year by FCA. Each summer, FCA partners with Lake Arrowhead Church to host Mega Sports Camp. This past summer, 100 elementary children attended the camp. It is a high-energy week filled with sports, worship, and Bible study. Lake Arrowhead Church is proud to partner with FCA’s sports ministry. To learn more go to www.cherokeefca. org.

CHEROKEE COUNTY SCHOOLS

STUDENT SERVICES – There are over 42,000 students in Cherokee County. Sadly, many of those students come from needy and vulnerable families. Lake Arrowhead Church is honored to partner with CCSS CARES program, which provides food, health services, and counseling to needy students. Approximately, one-third of county children are in the supplemental lunch program and are also in need of food to eat on the weekend. So, help may be in the form of providing grocery cards, gas cards, even housing so families do not have to live their cars. To learn more, go to Student Services at www.cherokeek12.net.

Jesus tells us to serve “the least.” For us, that means the children in Cherokee County who have the least food, least clothing, least love, and least hope. And that’s why for the 33rd year, Lake Arrowhead Church has hosted this golf tournament.

Special thanks to tournament cochairs, Mike Gibney and Marcia Terry. And thanks to all the volunteers, golfers, and sponsors.

2022 LAKE ARROWHEAD CHURCH GOLFING FORE CHILDREN SPONSORS AND CONTRIBUTORS

HOLE-IN-ONE SPONSORS

Day’s Chevrolet of Jasper and Shottenkirk Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram (Shottenkirk) of Canton each provided a Hole-in-One sponsorship. One on Hole 13 and the other on Hole 17. Both Andrew Diemer of Day’s Chevrolet and David Booth of Shottenkirk were enthusiastic contributors to Golfing Fore Children. Each of these gentleman care deeply about their community and give back by helping the organizations that are equipped to help at-risk children. It is comforting to know we have such leaders and businesses who are so willing to give back and we are so grateful for their support.

Through the corporate leadership of these companies, we were able to draw in 140 golfers.

While nobody won either of the hole-in-one prizes we did have a golfer that came within one foot of a hole-in-one win.

ANGEL HOUSE CHARITY GOLF TOURNAMENT CHECK PRESENTATION by

Renovations are beginning at North Georgia Angel House, thanks in part to the proceeds for the 10th Annual Angel House Golf Tournament held in late July. The Lake Arrowhead LGA and MGA hosted a luncheon October 5th and presented a check for $25,648.85 to Susan Worsley, Executive Director/CEO and Charlice Byrd, Angel House Board Member and Georgia State Representative. Susan shared with the group that these funds are earmarked for the replacement of rotting decks (see photo) to the main housing and administration building. She said the materials and dumpster are on site and work is ready to begin. Susan also mentioned that they will be purchasing shipping containers to retro fit into living quarters for the girls. This work is being done by Custom Containers of Georgia located in Ball Ground. A quick look at the website for CCG shows an example of a container home. They will be a perfect place for the girls to live.

The LGA and MGA were so excited that the funds from this event are going to play a part in providing safe housing and environment for the girls at Angel House. When we began this tournament 10 years ago, we gave Angel House a check for $4000 and thought that was great. It is staggering to think how this event has grown. We would not be able to have done this without our corporate sponsors, family sponsors, fellow golfers and the volunteers that helped us make this our most successful event. Thank you to everyone!

SHORT-TERM RENTAL ORDINANCE CHEROKEE COUNTY, GEORGIA

Cherokee County, Georgia has recently adopted an ordinance regarding short-term rentals. The full ordinance is available at ShortTermRentalOrdinanceCherokeeCounty20210806.pdf (cherokeega.com), but we wanted to make each property owner aware of this ordinance and have highlighted a few of the key points in the ordinance.

1. The purpose of the ordinance is to establish standards for short-term rentals of privately-owned residential structures rented to transient occupants, minimize adverse effects of short-term rental uses on surrounding residential neighborhoods, and preserve the character of residential neighborhoods.

2. A certificate is required to lawfully rent, operate, or advertise any property for short-term rental.

a. Owners must apply to the Cherokee County Development Services Center on an annual basis for a certificate.

READING FOR THE AGES by

Before the Fall Noah Hawley Grand

“Everyone is from someplace. We all have stories, our lives unfolding, along crooked lines, colliding in unexpected ways.”

This could sum up the premise of Before the Fall, as 11 people board a small, private plane from Martha’s Vineyard to Teterboro Airport, only to fall into the ocean 18 minutes later.

Most of them have nothing in common: two billionaire couples are nominally friends, the children are children (although the girl has a pretty big backstory), there is the inevitable security guard, and a random starving artist is invited by one of the wives at the local farmer’s market, where she had met him years ago, and just offered a seat on the plane as a way to avoid the ferry.

And, of course, the crew. Pilot, co-pilot, flight attendant. Each with their own stories.

All die, except for the artist, Scott, and the youngest boy JJ, who is four. Scott, as it turns out, had as a six- year -old boy watched the TV fitness guru Jack LaLanne tow a boat from Alcatraz, handcuffed, pulling it as he swam. This inspired Scott to swim. And so, years later, lost and disoriented in the ocean, in shock and with a dislocated shoulder, Scott manages to haul the boy eight hours to shore.

But what happened? The plane was in good shape, the crew was rested…

The world picks up on the story, because one of the billionaire men was due to be indicted for laundering money for unfriendly nations, and the other was the founder of a news network with the initials ALS instead of FOX. The second in command at the network grabs the story and puts it out there daily. “Who is this nobody, Scott? And why does he paint pictures of disasters?” Conspiracy theories ensue.

The men are more tightly drawn characters than their wives, but as in real life, sometimes men of power have wives who are paid less attention, and the book recognizes this fact.

“…isn’t this what marriage is? Two people fighting for rights to the same six inches?”

So, what happened before the fall? Solving that mystery is the focus of the story, and it is a page-turning thriller. Scott asks JJ’s aunt – now his guardian – “Do you think he really understands what happened? A long pause, and she asks “Do you?”

Cynicism and lyricism collide throughout the book. The men talk about Scott saving JJ: “So what? They train dogs to wear whiskey barrels and find warm bodies in an avalanche, but you don’t see me teaching my kids to grow up to be malamutes.”

Versus Scott, the survivor: “Even in planetary terms we are small – one man afloat in an entire ocean, a speck in the waves. We believe our capacity for reason makes us bigger than we are, our ability to understand the infinite vastness of celestial bodies. But the truth is, this sense of scale only shrinks us.”

Noah Hawley may be best known for being the producer and writer of Fargo, on FX. This story has a similar vibe. It is also reminiscent of JFK Jr.’s crash in the same area, that killed him and his wife.

But, switching topics, a request: what have you enjoyed in this column? What would you like to hear more about? We’ve ranged from The Lincoln Highway to The Codebreaker, with YA novels like Surviving the Forest inbetween. Daisy Jones and the Six, Midnight in Chernobyl, The Boy in the Field. You can reach me at jeannes1065@ gmail.com. I’d love to hear from you.

I am game to review anything, so please let me know. I am at jeannes1065@gmail.com.

Green & Growing

When spring fades, I think, “gee, I’m really going to miss this.” Then I get over it and move on to summer. When fall comes, I’m all like, “I can’t wait to see the new colors and blooms!” There is so much in the landscape to be thankful for this time of year.

How about things blooming now with a nice fragrance? Head to the nursery and scope out these great plants! And some of them will bloom in the spring as well!

TEA OLIVE AND SWEET OLIVE

Tea olive can get very large unless you score a dwarf variety. Either way, just make sure you give it the space it needs. Its delicate, tiny white flowers are unassuming, but their fragrance is definitely noticeable.

CAROLINA JESSAMINE

If happy, this vine will bloom again in the fall after it’s already displayed its small yellow flowers in the spring. Trellis it or tie it up in the direction you want it to go, and it’s a great flowering vine.

SWEET AUTUMN CLEMATIS

This vine can become invasive if not tended too, but boy does it smell great! And later in the year, those flowers turn to seed, which look like small red peppers.

SASANQUA CAMELLIA

This large shrub or medium tree bursts with scented flowers usually in late September through November. It’s evergreen too! Mine here has white flowers, but check out Yule Tide for beautiful red blooms. Japonica variety camellia blooms in late winter/early spring.

TRUMPET HONEYSUCKLE

Another great, but fast-growing, vine. Though the scented red, firecracker-like blooms aren’t seen until spring, this plant sports red berries in fall.

Though mums, pansies and violas don’t have much of a fragrance, they are dependable, low-maintenance flowers for this time of year. Also, cyclamen is an annual flower that is great for containers, and it can tolerate a little bit of cold. To me, its flowers appear to be upside down, and the heartshaped, variegated leaves are fun! One more - Autumn Joy sedum is different in the landscape with succulent-like leaves and tons of texture. They are perennial, and insects love them. Before the blooms fade, you can cut the stem, and hang them upside down to dry.

GREEN & GROWING

The Home FIX IT

7. The newer mini- lights burn much cooler and therefore are much safer.

8. If small children are in the home consider 12 or 24-volt lights.

9. As a general rule only three strands of lights should be linked together.

10. Keep outdoor electrical connections above ground – out of puddles of water.

11. Unplug strands of lights before replacing bulbs.

1. Make sure all outdoor receptacles are protected by a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit interrupter). The National Electrical Code requires GFCI protection of receptacles located outdoors, and it’s for life safety purposes.

2. Make sure that you have smoke detectors in your home and that they are working, as well as at least one fire extinguisher. One fire extinguisher per floor is better. One per floor plus one in your mechanical room and one in your laundry room is even better.

3. Never use indoor lights outside, and don’t use indoor extension cords outside.

4. Each year examine your old lights to make sure they are in good working order, and be sure to discard strands that are worn.

5. Drop cords are the number one reason for electrical fires in homes. Never run a drop cord under a rug, especially if there is foot traffic in the area, and never overload a drop cord. Never run drop cords out windows or doors.

6. Don’t over load the circuit, which the lights are on. Read the labels on the box of lights for the total wattage. Most outdoor circuits should only be loaded to roughly 1500 watts.

12. Only use UL approved lights.

13. When reaching high places be sure and use the correct equipment.

14. Last but not least, never burn an artificial tree in the fireplace. If you do, please see item number two above.

Purchasing & Installation Tips

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT ESPECIALLY FROM A SPOUSE’S PERSPECTIVE.

Lights are always on sale somewhere, just ask. The best thing to do is to let your significant other go and buy the lights or even better let them know you need their help and shopping expertise and ask them if they would please go with you and help you buy some decorations. After all there is no point in getting the season off to a bad start.

Adhere to all the safety items mentioned. Don’t screw hooks into your home to hold up the lights, they will eventually rust and begin to look bad. Use the new plastic gutter hangers from the store.

Don’t drive nails into your roof to mount lights to. Use the new clips that mount under your shingles. However if your roof is old and brittle, don’t use the shingle mounts either. In the case of an old brittle roof perhaps you should not put lights on your roof. And maybe get a new roof for Christmas.

APPROXIMATE NUMBER OF LIGHTS

NEEDED TO DECORATE YOUR TREE:

3’ Tree: 50 – 100 Lights

4’ Tree: 100 – 150 Lights

5’ Tree: 150 – 200 Lights

6’ Tree: 200 – 250 Lights

7’ Tree: 300 – 350 Lights

35 – 40 Lights for each foot over 7’

If you need to figure the amperage you are using add up the total wattage of the lighting and divide by 120 (volts). Check the overcurrent device on the circuit you are using and as a rule multiply that number by .8. So a 15-amp circuit should only be loaded to 12 amps and a 20-amp circuit only 16 amps. Put your lights on a timer so that they go on and off by themselves, making your home beautiful whether you’re home or not. Maybe stagger the times each day either on the outdoor and/or on the indoor lights.

As you take down your lights at the end of the season, keep next year in mind. Don’t damage the lights as you take them down and repair them as you go so that next year you don’t have to repair them as you’re putting them up. End of the holiday season is another great time to buy ahead for next year.

MOST IMPORTANTLY – HAVE A HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON! Grab your hammer and join the show! In Atlanta, 404.872.0750 or 1.800.972.8255. Saturday mornings from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m., Dave Baker is WSB’s resident household repair and home improvement expert! He provides a multitude of tips and advice on planning, building and fixing up around the house. Follow Dave on his Facebook page: Facebook.com/thehomefixitpage
