PAUL BOLDING WINS 2025 LA MASTERS CHAMPIONSHIP!
Paul Bolding won the coveted LA Masters Green Jacket with a net score of 68 and his professional partner’s score of 66 for a total of 134 to win by 6 shots! If you are unfamiliar with Lake Arrowhead’s version of the Masters, the tournament rules require each Lake Arrowhead golfer to select a professional playing partner from the Masters Tournament in Augusta. The combined Saturday scores of the two are then used to determine the winners.
Several spots were determined by a score card playoff. 29 participants won gift certificates. The ties were broken by using each team’s net score starting on the 18th and working backwards until the tie was broken. The winners were:
Place LA Golfer
1st Paul Bolding 68 66 134 Rory McIlroy
2nd Dennis Bush 74 66 140 Rory McIlroy

Congratulations to all the winners and a special thanks to all of the Lake Arrowhead golfers who participated in what has become one of the more popular tournaments at the Highlands Course. If you would like to join in the fun and shoot for a chance to earn your own “Green Jacket” next year, be advised that you do not have to be a member of the Golf Club. However, you must have an established handicap. For handicap information, check with either Uel, Kevin or Dalton in the Pro Shop. It’s easy to get started.

THIRD ANNUAL LAPOA CUP A SUCCESS
The day started with wind and temperatures in the high 30’s and finished sunny and in the mid 60’s for the Third Annual LAPOA Cup. The Four Person Scramble had a few twists to make the event memorable: Two Pay-the -Pro Holes, #5 and #14 with a first shot from 100 yards from the green resulted in 17 Eagles, Five holes on #2 failed to produce a hole-inone and surprisingly only 6 birdies. Alas, no one won the hole-in-one prize for #17 but there is always next year!
Congratulations to the Cup winners, the foursome of Dennis Bush, Jeff Ciupak, Vick Martin and Mel Stanley posted a score of 57, fifteen under par.
Congratulations too for the last place team, Karen Fullerton, Jennifer Harding, Ruth Nunes and Rosalyn Waldron who each one a golf lesson from Kevin Aines and a dozen golf balls each to make up for any lost on the course.
Thanks to everyone who participated, particularly the Tournament Sponsor, TIH Homes, and the Gold Sponsors: Brad Hastings, Ken McGarry Homes, Superior Plus Propane, Hair, Etc, Linda and Sandy Reynolds, Veronica and Mike Johnson, Gail and Robert McGurk and Mike Cassaras.
Special Thanks to Uel Kemp, Chef Jason Danneman and Bill Larson and all the Lake Arrowhead staff who helped make this event a success.

READING FOR THE AGES
by Jeanne Schwartz
| Bloomsbury Publishing
“May we all be so lucky to live long enough to see our time turn to fable.”
Thus speaks Noel Crowe, known as Noe, the narrator of This is Happiness, who recounts his days in Faha in County Clare, Ireland in the days when electricity was first coming to the village, but set down 60 years later, as a 78 year old man.
This sedate, lyrical, gorgeous book starts out with a long meditation on the rain. It is a constant feature of Faha, so much so that when it stops raining, people don’t even notice. To crib from the New York Times review, “In the fields the cattle, made slow-witted by the rain lifted their rapt and empty faces, heavy loops of spittle hanging, as though they ate watery light.”
But one day it stops raining. And the plot, such as it is, is introduced. Noe has returned to live with his grandparents Doady (Grandma) and Ganga (Grandpa) after trying his hand at Catholic priest training in Dublin but unable to sustain his faith. The tiny village of Faha was at the bottom of the list of places where the Rural Electrical Commission was bringing electricity to Ireland, but its time has arrived.
A gentleman named Christy McMahon arrives to shepherd Faha into the future on behalf of the REC and ends up befriending Noe. He seems in no hurry – nobody in this novel does – and it gradually comes to be known that he has an ulterior motive: he has come to make amends to and hopefully renew a relationship with a woman he left at the altar 50 years earlier.
Christy is on one end of the romantic spectrum, regretting decisions from half a century ago, while Noe is just on the cusp of wanting to explore romantic love, and crushes on all three of the local doctor’s daughters. This is not the only thing that makes Christy and Noe an odd couple. When Christy first appears, he has the audacity to actually go swimming in the river. In Faha, “most went into the water only occasionally and a good deal of these were trouserrolled-to-the-knee men who stepped into the low waves at Kilkee with hats on and heads down – their whiter-thanwhite feet under the surface a source of some astonishment and their big toes digging into the sand like an experiment in worms.”
Noe is bewildered, and ironically, muses about why Christy doesn’t seem in a hurry to see or talk to Noe’s grandparents, since it seems that is why he has arrived on their doorstep. I say ironically, because, as mentioned, there is no hurry in Faha. Everyone waits, patiently, for whatever is going to happen next.
As Faha waits for Easter, Christy becomes a boarder with Noe and his grandparents as the electrification scheme intrudes on the community. When the electricity finally did come, it was discovered that the 100 watt bulb was too bright for Faha. “The instant garishness was too shocking. Dust and cobwebs were discovered to have been thickening on every surface since the sixteenth century. Reality was appalling.”

But that’s getting ahead of the story. On Easter Sunday, then as now, the pews were filled, and the church became “one living sea of the washed, the ironed, the shampooed and the shone.” And Christy saw his lost love.
The story meanders like this throughout. It includes music, sport, relationships, and progress, all experienced through the lens of rural Ireland. On Easter Monday, a football match takes place between Faha and Boola. A local farmer had given the use of his field, but also allowed his cattle to graze between matches, resulting in ground “pocked with ankle breakers, bounce-un-predicters and Friesian plops of local hazard.”
The tenderness and beauty of this read is to be found in the observations of humanity. Faha was where ”when darkness fell, it fell absolutely, and when you went outside the wind sometimes drew apart the clouds and you stood in the revelation of so many stars you could not credit the wonder and felt smaller in body as your soul felt enormous.”
And Christy’s definition of happiness strikes Noe as the fact that you could “Stop at, not all, but most moments of your life, stop for one heartbeat and, no matter what the state of your head or heart, say This is happiness, because of the simple truth that you were alive to say it.”
Rain is a key ingredient in this book, and Ireland is known for being rainy. However, Georgia actually receives about the same amount - (slightly more) rainfall than Ireland! Our average annual rainfall is around 49.89 inches, while Ireland’s is 49.2 inches. Clearly it matters how and where it rains: in Georgia we have more intense rainfall during thunderstorms, while Ireland experiences a more consistent, milder rainfall pattern, and rains nearly every second day or 3 or 4 days out of the week. And in some mountainous areas get twice that amount!
