HOW TO SUBMIT CONTENT FOR LAKE ARROWHEAD LIVING All content for consideration as well as all correspondence regarding Lake Arrowhead Living Magazine should be directed ONLY to layccnews@gmail.com. This is an integral process in place for checking to be sure all content received has been considered for each particular month's publication. Items sent to any other email address will possibly be omitted. Note that Lake Arrowhead Living is published monthly (12 issues per year) in an overlapping format that covers 2 months at a time. Magazines generally arrive in mailboxes around mid-month. For example, the June/July issue will promote late June and July events and will feature articles submitted by May 10th covering happenings that took place in April and May. New content is always due by the 10th of each month to be published in the next month's issue on the following schedule. Please note that the 10th is a HARD deadline for all content unless previously discussed and planned with the layout designer. This means that if you do not have a standing dedicated section of the magazine, your content is considered "new" and the deadline of the 10th applies. Those with standing dedicated sections have a grace period for submission decided by and agreed upon with their layout designer. Larry Adams won the coveted LA Masters Green Jacket with a net score of 72 and his professional partner’s score of 68 for a total of 140 to edge out Rex Wallace by three shots. If you are unfamiliar with Lake Arrowhead’s version of the Masters, the tournament rules require each Lake Arrowhead golfer to select a professional playing partner from the Masters Tournament in Augusta. The combined Saturday scores of the two are then used to determine the winners. Several spots were determined by a score card playoff. 12 participants won gift certificates. golf news NOTES FROM 19TH HOLE by Robert McGurk As I write this in April for the May/June edition of Lake Arrowhead Living, MGA Match Play is underway, 32 golfers will compete in the Tournament which will finish by September 1. On the first day of Match Play, Mike Johnson scored a hole-in-one on #2 at the Highlands Course. Clearly Mike did better than turning three shots into two on this par 3 hole. Mike went on to win his match and it made me wonder what are the odds of getting a hole-in-one. The National Hole-In-One Registry, estimates based on 450 Million rounds of golf played each year in the USA, that a hole-in-one is once every 3,500 rounds of golf. The Registry says for the average golfer the odds are 12,500 to one! As a MGA member playing in an MGA event, Mike will share the hole-in-one payout at the end of the year. Well done Mike! In addition to Match Play, the MGA has two tournaments in May and June the Red, White and Blue Memorial
Tournament on May 28, and our 3-2-1 on 5-4-3 on June 11. We invite you to join our group. Information on all our tournaments and events can be found on our website www. lakearrowheadmga.com. by Cindy Rincon April 15th is a significant date. Not only is it the date to file taxes, but also the time to now plant gardens and ‘supposedly’ not worry about another frost. It also reflects the full onslaught of spring, especially since the Master’s Tournament has finished with many more golf tournaments to follow. The Lake Arrowhead Ladies Golf Association kicked off the 2022 season on March 23rd at the annual evening dinner / meeting. We welcomed 8 new ladies. It was a great time to reconnect from the winter break, meet new friends and review the 2022 play day events. The LALGA season begins in April and ends in October and the events occur monthly. Please see event schedule. The LALGA is always looking for new players and members. With a lot of new neighbors moving in each month hopefully more ladies will want to join in the fun. club business SHORT-TERM RENTAL ORDINANCE CHEROKEE COUNTY, GEORGIA Cherokee County, Georgia has recently adopted an ordinance regarding short-term rentals. The full ordinance is available at ShortTermRentalOrdinanceCherokeeCounty20210806.pdf (cherokeega.com), but we wanted to make each property owner aware of this ordinance and have highlighted a few of the key points in the ordinance. 1. The purpose of the ordinance is to establish standards for short-term rentals of privately-owned residential structures rented to transient occupants, minimize adverse effects of short-term rental uses on surrounding residential neighborhoods, and preserve the character of residential neighborhoods. 2. A certificate is required to lawfully rent, operate, or advertise any property for short-term rental. a. Owners must apply to the Cherokee County Development Services Center on an annual basis for a certificate. b. Certificates require an initial administration fee and annual renewal fees. 3. The Certificate number must be listed in any advertisement for the rental of the property. 4. No short-term rental shall offer more than five (5) bedrooms for rent. 5. The use of outdoor speakers by short-term rentals is prohibited. 6. The number of occupants shall not exceed two persons per bedroom plus two additional persons. 7. The short-term rental must have parking off the street sufficient for one car for each bedroom being rented. Parking shall only be on designated hard surfaced areas. 8. Quiet hours are 12:00 a.m. midnight to 7:00 a.m. daily, 12:00 a.m. midnight Saturday to 1:00 p.m. Sunday). 9. The Cherokee County Marshal’s office (678.493.4080) is tasked with enforcement of the ordinance

Narrows Marina Parking Permits have been mailed to Property Owners who currently lease a Narrows Boatslip. This permit must be placed on the inside windshield. Security looks for these yearly permits when checking the Narrows parking lot. Please register boats and trailers. See Boat Registration information below. BOAT REGISTRATION Boat registration forms may be downloaded from the website at lakearrowheadclub.net. Proof of liability insurance with limits not less than $300,000 is required for all motorized boats. club business SHORT-TERM RENTAL GUIDELINES: PHASE I https://library.municode.com/ga/cherokee_county/ordinances/code_of_ordinances?nodeId=1106313 In order to protect and preserve the residential character, property values, and enjoyment of all homeowners within the Lake Arrowhead community, please observe the following guidelines for relative to short-term property rentals of Lake Arrowhead Phase I units. 1. Short-term property rentals (less than 6 months) are strictly prohibited in both Phase II and Phase III of Lake Arrowhead. The maximum number of occupants should be restricted to no more than two individuals per bedroom. 2. Short-term rentals should be registered with LA Security gate they intend to enter, and identified as short-term rentals so that the appropriate identification may be provided at check-in a. Amenity use cards, identifying renters and associated unit address b. Vehicle “hang tag” for vehicles 3. All rental agreements should include an acknowledgement that renters have received and agree to abide by the Lake Arrowhead Rules and Regulations a. If boat usage is included with the rental of the home, a printed copy of the lake rules and restrictions should be included with the rental agreement, a copy should be left in the home, and a laminated copy should be placed in the boat and/or attached to the boat key b. Violations of the lake rules and regulations may result in revocation of the issued boat permit and result in suspension of lake access privileges 4. Homeowners are responsible for the actions of guests and renters of their home and violations of the Covenants or Rules and Regulations will typically be handled in the following manner: a. 1st infraction – issuance of written warning to homeowner b. 2nd infraction – 30-day suspension of common property access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters c. 3rd infraction – 12-month suspension of common amenity access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters d. 4th infraction – permanent loss of common amenity access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters e. Addition steps may be taken depending on the nature of the infraction, including contacting the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department or taking additional legal to enforce the community governing documents f. Common property damage by renters, if applicable, will be levied against the lot owner g. Egregious infractions may result in immediate suspension of common property access and privileges or other sanctions 5. “Party Houses” are strictly prohibited and deemed a nuisance and violation of the Lake Arrowhead Covenants, Article III, Section 19. Party Houses are also prohibited by popular short-term rental companies (Airbnb and VRBO) and nuisance properties will be reported to the appropriate listing entity.
ARCHITECTURAL EXTERIOR WORK POLICY When an Exterior Work Permit is approved, the owner will be sent an 8 ½ x 11 permit that shall be placed in a window on the first floor of the property. The blue permit sign indicates that work on the property was reviewed and approved by the Architectural Review Committee.

club business MARINA PAVILION RULES AND REGULATIONS: HOURS OF OPERATION The Marina Pavilion will be open dawn to dusk or during sanctioned LAYCC events. FOOD & BEVERAGE Food and beverages are allowed to be carried onto the Pavilion. No glass bottles or beer kegs are permitted. No grilling or preparation of food is allowed. All trash must be placed in the trash receptacles on the shore. PERSONAL CHAIRS Property owners are allowed to bring their own folding chairs on to the Pavilion. They must be taken with you when you leave, i.e. chairs cannot be left behind. ATTIRE Members and guests shall dress in attire befitting the surroundings of the community. Extremely revealing attire, such as a thong, is not suitable for the family atmosphere of the Marina Pavilion. NO SWIMMING No swimming is permitted from the Marina Pavilion or docks anywhere in the “No Wake” zone. No running or diving is permitted from the Pavilion or docks. NO FISHING No fishing is allowed from the Marina Pavilion or docks. BOATS Boats can tie up on the side of the walkway only where there are cleats and cannot at any time tie up to the Pavilion. Maximum time at the walkway is 1 hour (or 15 minutes if others are waiting). These areas are intended for drop off and pickup. PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES No grilling, skateboarding, bicycles, rollerblading, sunbathing, or feeding the wildlife is permitted on the Marina Pavilion or docks. PETS Pets are not allowed on the Marina Pavilion.

sports & fitness LAKE ARROWHEAD HIKING TRAILS I am excited to announce the latest addition to our growing trail system here at Lake Arrowhead. The 'Ridge Trail’, is approximately 1.2 miles in length, and affords nice views, especially in the winter season. The trailhead is located atop Sautter Hill at the end of Lake Arrowhead Drive. It follows a ridge with both ‘out and back’, and loop options. This is a great trail to walk a dog, or go for a run. Along with the new Cascades Loop Trail (.7m) and the new Lost Town Trail (.7m), this brings our annual growth to 2.6 miles added. Which brings our trail system to a total nearly 14 miles. We also added a view, a picnic table and a bench near the 1.4 mile marker on Summit Trail. I am also pleased to announce that Lake Arrowhead is committed to expanding our trail system and we are currently working on another beautiful new trail. We will also be constructing another bridge on Wilderness Trail this summer season. As you may recall I started writing a series of articles about the Highlands Grill employees starting with the “Back of the House”. The “Front of the House” articles began by introducing you to Elizabeth Raymond, Highlands Grill Manager. I am now continuing this series by introducing the “Front of the House “staff that has the most seniority.
CAROLINE CROWSON If you read my article about Elizabeth Raymond you will already know that Caroline is Elizabeth’s younger sister. In case you have forgotten, their Dad was a pilot and their mom a stewardess (yes that’s what they were called back then) and lived in the Atlanta metro area. They also had a weekend get-away home in Pine Mountain, Georgia. So, when Caroline’s Dad passed away she and her Mom decided to sell their home and move to Pine Mountain. Caroline started out as an office manager for an insurance company but a “desk job” really wasn’t for her. She soon moved on to being the manager of The Oak Tree fine dining restaurant in Pine Mountain, Georgia (near Callaway Gardens). But as you know she grew up in a home where adventure was on the forefront, so she literally spun a globe to decide what fate lay ahead for her. Up popped.... Cuba! She knew at the time Cuba wasn’t an option so she went as close as she could get, so Hello, Key West, Florida! She was fortunate to land a job at the Key West Hilton at Mallory Square where the big Sunset Celebration was in “full swing” every night. Not many of us could keep that pace for too long, so after about 4 years Caroline followed her heart and moved to Panama City with her boyfriend who owned a flooring business. Hard work brought much success and she remained in Panama City for 15 years. Unfortunately for all, her Mom’s health started to decline causing Caroline to return to Georgia to be near family. Almost immediately upon arrival, she came to work here at Lake Arrowhead. We are fortunate that she has been part of the Lake Arrowhead family for 7 years. While she has always been a hard-working individual, her free time has been largely devoted to her two passions – her family and her art. In fact, the latter of those two has a connection to the former. Caroline’s love of art goes back to her childhood, when her family would visit her Uncle Charles Crowson, a portrait painter of distinction, some of whose works are in museums in South Carolina, Georgia and elsewhere. Caroline used to watch Uncle Charles paint sometimes literally sitting under the easel as he worked.

In her youth, apart from school art, , she began working in charcoals, then moved on to watercolors briefly and then found herself happily working in oils. With the various moves, the duties of work and the efforts in caring for her Mother, she gradually slipped away from the passion...until one day Lake Arrowhead’s unofficial artist-in-residence, learned of her skill and passion, took her under his wing to work on a painting together. That artist-in-residence (of course) is Jim Bennett and Caroline’s eyes well with tears of gratitude when she recalls that reawakening. Since then, she’s really back, so much so that she’s experimenting with different media, right now working in glass, while continuing to paint. So, next time you are in the Clubhouse and you see her, raise your glass in her direction and toast to Jim. Caroline will be delighted.
TIFFANY MILLER In case you haven’t met Tiffany it is probably because she went floating past you at a very rapid pace. But don’t worry she’ll be back as quickly as she disappeared, ready to take your order or arrive with your order. Tiffany has been with the Highlands Grill for 4 years and I would say she thrives on efficiency. In fact, not knowing her that well, but watching her in motion I would say she thrives on efficiency in life. Not only does she work part-time, Thursday and Friday nights at the Highlands Grill, she also has a full time job at the Canton Post Office. A-nd don’t kid yourself, these days any job with USPS is demanding and pressureful. In addition, Tiffany is the proud mother of three children., Kayla, the oldest, is an RN,. Then there’s Carly, a dental assistant who has also just started picking up some extra bucks at the Highlands Grill. Lastly, you may have read about her son, Dylan, in my Back of the House article who just graduated high school and has qualified for his welder certificate. In case, 3 kids and 2 jobs doesn’t keep you busy enough over the years. Tiffany also owns and cares (deeply) for three dogs. In no particular order, there’s a German Shepherd, a Labrador Retriever and, lastly, a Blue Heeler. The latter is an Australian breed, originally developed to herd cattle. So does Tiffany sit around when she has time off? Of course not! She loves to travel. Her history is that her family moved from California to Lake Arrowhead while Tiffany was in Elementary School. She grew up learning the joys of hiking, kayaking and the beauty of
community interest nature, all befitting a Lake Arrowhead resident. She also loves waterfalls and so maybe she’ll even sit down long enough to listen to the water rushing by her, rather than vice versa.
LEVI KING In case you haven’t noticed a trend, most if not all of the clubhouse employees grew up nearby and remained in the area. Levi is no exception. He grew up in Austell, GA. Though he was moved to Indiana when he was 4, his family wisely chose to move back, coming to Cherokee County a year later and Levi has no plans to leave. The thing that impressed me most about Levi was his true joy in working at The Highlands Grill. He said more than once that the staff is really a family. They all work hard together. In fact, Levi’s hard work and team spirit has given him the opportunity for promotion. He joined the Highlands Team 4 years ago as the dishwasher and has worked his way up to “front of the house” assistant manager. Although he’s proud of his accomplishments over the last 4 years, if you’ve seen him bustling around the Grill, it’s clear he doesn’t plan to slow down now. One of the things he also seems to like about the Grill is the opportunity to interact with many people and get occasional input and time to figure out his future career path. He admits that is something he hasn’t quite settled on. Maybe he’ll become a realtor or an interior designer. Those are just a couple of the many ideas he is open-mindedly considering for his future. With his winning personality and work ethic, he should be shooting high.
Meanwhile , while he contemplates, we are fortunate to have his concerted efforts as part of the happy Highlands Grill family. When he’s not working, his favorite past time is kayaking. No doubt he’s gliding along toward big plans.
CHEYENNE HUFSTETLER To say that Cheyenne grew up “around here” is slightly understated since her parents and even her grandparents grew up “around here”. In fact, Cheyenne grew up just outside the South Gate in a house that her grandfather built. Therefore, most, if not all of her life Cheyenne knew about Lake Arrowhead. So it was perfectly fitting that when she was old enough she joined the staff, her friends and neighbors at the “front of the house”. Cheyenne has been with us for approximately 4 years. Many of you may remember Cheyenne was unfortunately in an automobile accident which required a 6 month recovery from a pretty severe ankle injury. When her recovery was complete, she was able to return to work. Fortunately for her, that return was when COVID was in full swing, so it wasn’t necessary to do a lot of walking, easing her way back into more physically demanding efforts. Occasionally, on her time off Cheyenne will stop by the clubhouse with her adorable 6 year old daughter. In fact, most of her “downtime” is spent with her daughter Nevaeh Cheyenne is immensely proud of her daughter, as her daughter is on her way to becoming quite the rodeo star. Nevaeh not only rides horses, but is already actively engaged in barrel racing, pole bends and has even started mutton busting. So look for them not only at the clubhouse but at the next rodeo.

Surviving the Forest: A WW2 Historical Novel, Based on a True Story of a Jewish Holocaust Survivor Adiva Geffen | eBookPro Publishing This YA (Young Adult) novel has been on the best seller list for 30 consecutive months. It is based on the true story of a heroic girl, whose life was changed forever by the war. It is a tale of courage and triumph. Sarah’s story starts in a little village in Poland, not far from the Parczew Forest, where Jews and Gentiles lived peacefully together in friendship and considered themselves only as Polish. Sarah was known as Shurka, her family hoping she would blessed with her own Abraham someday. And she was: her own Avraham. But as Germans started to make ominous moves into Poland, many people found themselves in denial, much like the story of the frog who is put into a pot of water on the stove, not noticing as it heats until it is too late. Shurka’s family was among them. Here is how the book describes it: “Humanity believes that fate is in their hands and then reality comes and shows them otherwise. The year was 1939. The world was still in a deep slumber, just like Sleeping Beauty cursed by the evil witch. None of the leaders was looking ahead; they did not want to recognize the signs of terror that had begun to form a crack in the world.”
This is the arc of the story, which is terrifying and inspiring. Shurka’s survival is remarkable, and a cautionary tale of what one deranged autocrat can orchestrate. Reading it through the eyes of one young woman is powerful: Sarah made it out of the forest, where the graves of her fallen loved ones would forever remain. She came into the light and back to life. The story of her ordeal will make you think, imagine, and reflect. Insights and Context Shurka’s story is important and relevant because statistics show that one fifth of young adults in Europe, on the very land where WWII played out, are not aware of the atrocities that took place. The same statistics apply to the U.S. The human mind can easily forget what is wishes to forget, and ignore genocide happening “somewhere else.” It’s important to know: there are many books written about WWII; not yet many books about our most recent examples of humanitarian crises. Another suggestion for learning about the impact of World WarII on children is The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, by John Boyne.
Eventually, people started to realize that Poland was no longer safe, and many in the village started packing up and leaving. Shurka’s family was not willing to give up their ideal of their peaceful life, however, not realizing that “the man who ranted at every square in Belin had only taken his first step on his way to destroying the world.” They were proven wrong. Things got tougher in their village; many were sent to the ghetto under Gestapo orders. Armbands became necessary. Shurka said it offended her that “they mark us as if we were cows”. Her husband, Avraham, tried to console her by telling her that it was not important, that what was important was that in her heart she was human. But Hitler’s Germans did not stop, and as families continued to flee, Shurka’s family’s situation eventually dawned on them. It was almost too late. But finally, they retreated to the Parczew Forest, to dig and then live in underground bunkers, where no sound was permitted, lest they be discovered.
