BEATING THE GRAND OLD LADY OF GOLF

I was nervous about my first tee shot at the Old Course of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews. In fact, I was too focused on my practice swings to see a wizened, red-faced Irishman hit a flying seagull with his drive.

Responding to the commotion, I quit swinging my driver and puzzled over the silent bird twitching in the soggy grass. Dozens of other seagulls gathered above their fallen comrade, squawking and screeching. They wanted revenge.

So did the North Sea, which crashed violently against the rock-strewn beaches, whipped by the winds.

I had come to the famous Old Course to share in the mystical experience reported by other players. With the death of the seagull, my guts were telling me I'd have a different kind of experience.

More a duffer than a player, I had no lifelong dream of one day playing at golf’s most famous course. Indeed, I had taken a 30-year vacation from golf in deference to the obligations of family and career.

In my retirement, however, I returned to golf like a repentant apostate. Rusty, to say the least, I took lessons and wore myself out five and six days a week on the driving range. I exchanged old clubs for new clubs and bought waterproof golf shoes, a rain suit, and an armload of golf shirts. I joined the Lake Arrowhead Men's Golf Association.

In my delusional enthusiasm for the game, I also signed up for an early summer tour of Scottish courses: Muirfield, North Berwick, Crail, Carnoustie, Jubilee, and the Old Course.

Our tour group had reservations at the first five courses. For the Old Course, we were at the mercy of daily balloting. Failing for several days to get ballots as foursomes, we began submitting our names in person at the starter's hut for a chance to play as singles.

Four members of our tour group drew good numbers on the first attempt and were able to play the next day. The rest of us gathered with our traveling partners to watch the lucky ones tee off. Later, we greeted them on hole seventeen--"The Road Hole"--and cheered the heroes as they finished eighteen-"Tom Morris."

I wasn't among the lucky ones on that first singles drawing. However, on my second attempt, my queue number looked promising enough for me to play on the morrow.

The day dawned cold, wet, and windy--a perfect Scottish summer day. I donned rain gear and carried my clubs to the starter's hut. I was number five in the queue. I was ready to go.

However, I sat looking pathetic for two hours before the starter offered me a spot in the last foursome of the day. I gladly accepted and hauled my clubs back up the hill to the B 'n' B.

When I returned 5 hours later, an approaching storm threatened heavier rain, higher winds, and premature darkness. I warmed up with a few putts and took my place in line.

And now a seagull was dying.

Players and the caddies debated the rules governing the hitting wild animals. Women in the gallery begged for someone to do something about the expiring bird. Men poked each other and tried to keep from smirking.

Like an Ancient Roman augur, I feared the dead seagull was a bad omen for a battle with a historic golf links. Remembering the curse of the albatross in Coleridge's “The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner," I turned to our tour group's pro--Uel Kemp--and blurted out: "Water, water, everywhere/And not a drop to drink."

His face lit up in an ironic smile. He breathed, "Yes."

A caddy ran to the starter's hut and returned with a plastic shopping bag. He bundled up the bird and took it from sight. The relieved crowd of onlookers clapped softly.

The cursed Irishman hit another drive, and his foursome and caddies disappeared into the rain as they crossed the Swilcan Burn.

Taking my turn, I hit a drive pushed slightly to the left by wind and set off hopeful into the rain, my caddie laying out the strategy for my second shot.

One golfer in my foursome stood out from the rest of us in our dark rain gear.

He was a rotund young Scotsman with a bushy red beard. Despite the cold, wind-driven rain, he wore shorts, Crocs, and a Hawaiian shirt.

He was loud and drunk. He was hitting the ball hundreds of yards--generally into an adjacent fairway. Absorbed in my own

struggle with hitting into the rain and wind, I failed to see him hit a ball into the foursome in front of us.

With three foursomes backed up on the fourth hole, "Ginger Beer," I waited and watched. In this break from swatting feckless iron shots, I saw the Irishman hurry back toward the Scotsman.

The Irishman gestured violently and got into the Scotsman’s face.

“Ya damn near killed ma wife with yer shot.”

“She seems well enoof to me.”

They belly-bucked and made fists.

The Scotsman yelled, “I may have coom close to ya with ma bole, but at least I didn’t kill a fecking seagull.”

The Irishman fumed and stomped. Both men held up their dukes for a fight.

Caddies ran to break up the sparring and cursing. A marshal in a golf cart splashed across the swampy fairway to investigate.

The caddies separated the combatants. The Irishman backed off and returned to his group. The caddies dispersed. The marshal drove away.

With the game still delayed, the Irishman came back for more. The caddies separated the two men again. The wind whistled, and play finally resumed.

At the snack bar, the Scotsman bought beers for everyone who wanted one. He also bought us haggis rolls. They were fresh and hot from frying.

I was cold enough and hungry enough to try one. It was spicy and aromatic. The hot grease was welcome.

But then the weather got bad, really bad. Rain flew sideways in a gale.

By the twelfth hole, "Heathery (In)," the Irishman and his friends had headed back to town. So had the belligerent Scotsman.

I could no longer see the pins through my wet glasses. My score card and map had become a handful of soggy papiermâché. My waterproof shoes were full of water.

My caddie was wet and cold. “Hurry, Wayne, I’m hurtin’.”

He pointed. “There’s a boonker there ya cannae see.”

I hit into it. The caddie jumped into the sand, picked up my ball, and threw it into the fairway.

I hit into the rough. My caddie threw my ball back into the fairway.

I hit back into the rough. My caddie ran with my clubs to the green. He waved for me to follow.

I threw my ball into the fairway and hit into the rough again.

“Hurry, Wayne, please.” I was doing the best I could.

As planned, my wife and my daughter were waiting for me at the seventeenth green. They were wet and cold. “Hurry, Wayne. We’re so cold.”

My drive on the last hole veered to the left against the wind— but beyond the burn. I crossed the Swilcan Bridge.

The rain still fell sideways from left to right. It was too dark to see anything except the lights of the town. The caddie told me to aim at the lit chandelier in the old stone clubhouse, which was at least 30 degrees to the left of the green.

I hit 40 degrees to the left of the green. The ball flew up into the low cloud. The wind pushed the ball back to the right.

My caddie cheered and danced. I was on the green beyond the Valley of Sin.

I three-putted. The caddie and I gave each other high fives.

My daughter took my clubs and ran up the hill toward the B 'n' B.

Soaked and shivering, I had played the Old Course in what my caddie said was a winter storm in July. My score was not worth figuring, but I finished all eighteen holes in a comic, anti-heroic quest.

As I saw things, I had beaten the Grand Old Lady of golf.

READING FOR THE AGES

“Intermezzo” is about two Irish brothers. Peter is a successful barrister in Dublin, and Ivan, who is shyer, geekier, 10 years younger, wears ceramic braces and plays competitive chess.

After their mother moved in with another man when Ivan was small, they were raised mainly by their father, an engineer who immigrated to Ireland in the 1980s from Slovakia. We meet them soon after their father's death following years battling cancer. Both brothers, at loose ends, are struggling with the question, "Under what conditions is life endurable?"

Peter, 32, is caught between two women. Sylvia, his longtime girlfriend, left him after she was gravely and permanently injured in a car crash; she didn’t want Peter to have to care for her. He remains dismayed by her decision, and they remain close. He and Sylvia meet regularly for civilized meals and arm-in-arm strolls through familiar streets in the rain. (It's always raining in this novel. It’s Ireland)! They talk easily about her lectures and a big discrimination case he has won against a business with a demeaning dress code for its female employees. Rooney conveys the enormous comfort Peter finds in Sylvia so well that we share "the deep replenishing reservoir of her presence."

But in the meantime, he has also has become involved in an "ongoing sexual and also quietly financial relationship" with Naomi, a university student who supports herself with occasional sex work. He's fond of her, but she is not his soulmate; rather a very young girl who depends on him – even takes advantage of him in selfish ways. She is a mess, literally and figuratively, and only his desire to care for someone keeps him tethered to her. Here is Naomi: “Full lips parted, sweep of freckles on her cheekbone. Silver stud glinting in her ear”; “tiny silver dress”; “animal intelligence”; “pink tongue, flash of silver.” Rooney underscores her “supreme desirability.”

Peter’s mental state is deeply influenced by the fact that the one he loves can’t love him back physically, and won’t love him back because of her physical limitations. "Thoughts rattling and noisy almost always and then when quiet, frightening unhappy.”

Ivan is socially awkward and reticent. Despite a degree in theoretical physics, he barely supports himself, taking on just enough freelance data analysis work to enable him to focus on competitive chess. After a weekend chess exhibition where he plays 10 people at once at a local arts council several hours outside Dublin, the program director gives him a lift to his rented lodging for the night. Margaret, 14 years Ivan's senior, is guiltily separated from her alcoholic husband. The tentative but intense connection that unfolds between these two sidelined people is one of the great pleasures of this novel. They skulk around, hoping to avoid being seen together. But she blossoms under his touch, and he under hers.

The brothers had a wonderful, “normal” relationship when they were young. Ivan adored Peter, and depended on him almost exclusively for the nurturance everyone needs. But as Ivan got older, and Peter “deserted him” for a more mature life, the relationship deteriorated.

When the brothers get together for dinner at Sylvia's urging, for example, Ivan cautiously opens up about his new relationship. Peter's kneejerk reaction is disparaging, which causes Ivan to hit back: "I've hated you my entire life." Things disintegrate from there.

Of course, the criticism Peter levels at Ivan is hypocritical at best, since the age difference between Ivan and Margaret is no different than the age difference between Peter and Naomi. And later in the book it won’t surprise you that this hypocrisy comes to light.

community interest

There is also a dog. Doesn’t every good read need a dog? Alexei had lived with Peter and Ivan’s mother and her second husband, but was not wanted. So, in a parlay of moves, Ivan, Alexei and Naomi find themselves living together in the same house, and uncovering the secrets that have been hidden. But that’s saying too much

Intermezzo propels you to its well-earned, moving climax with nary a false move. This story about learning how to accept loss and pain ultimately involves the exhilaration of flinging all the windows and doors of life wide open: "Everything exposed to light and air. Nothing protected, nothing left to be protected anymore."

Another question Rooney's characters ponder: "What can life be made to accommodate, what can one life hold inside itself without breaking?" Apparently — like this novel — quite a lot.

Sally Rooney is an Irish author and screenwriter. She has published four novels: Conversations with Friends (2017), Normal People (2018), Beautiful World, Where Are You (2021), and Intermezzo (2024). The first two were adapted into the television miniseries Normal People (2020) and Conversations with Friends (2022). Rooney has said that her characters tend to live in economically precarious conditions despite often being college educated.[60]

Rooney's work has garnered critical acclaim and commercial success, and she is regarded as one of the foremost millennial writer (born in 1991).[1][2][3] Time named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2022.
