GOLF NEWS GEORGE GIBBONS WINS 2019 LA MASTERS CHAMPIONSHIP! George Gibbons won the coveted LA Masters Green Jacket with a net score of 66 and his professional partner’s score of 66 for a total of 132 to edge out Bob Bettencourt, Pat Farrelly and Larry Adams by four shots! If you are unfamiliar with Lake Arrowhead’s version of the Masters, the tournament rules require each Lake Arrowhead golfer to select a professional playing partner from the Masters Tournament in Augusta. The combined Saturday scores of the two are then used to determine the winners. Several spots were determined by a score card playoff. 16 participants won gift certificates. The ties were broken by using each players net scores starting on the 18th and working backwards until the tie was broken. The winners were: Place LA Golfer

If you would like to join in the fun and shoot for a chance to earn your own “Green Jacket” next year, be advised that you do not have to be a member of the Golf Club. GIRLS JUST WANNA HAVE FUN GOLFING by Jan Garbiel The LALGA welcomed their first play event of the season with a gorgeous day and twenty ladies ready to make good on the theme for the event. Before hitting the course, everyone enjoyed a delicious lunch of deli sandwiches, accompanied by potato salad, coleslaw and deviled eggs. And of course, there were plenty of desserts to keep us going. Chef John and Elizabeth and team did a great to make sure we were fortified for play. The format for play was a Four-Person Shamble. A "shamble" is a format in which a team of golfers selects the one best drive among them after teeing off, then all four play their own golf balls from that position into the hole. You can think of a shamble as a scramble off the tee and then regular stroke play into the hole. The team with the lowest score wins! Our two winning teams with the lowest scores and winning gift certificates to the Pro Shop were:

NARROWS MARINA PARKING

Security is engaged in a community program called Wellness Check. An on-duty guard will call you each day at a time you choose for them to call your residence. They will just check to see if you are OK. If this is a program you would like to enroll in, please call the north Gate (770 479-2565) and have your name added to the list. There is no charge for this service and if you decide to stop this community service, just call the North Gate and cancel. The list is confidential and will not be used except for the wellness check.

Parking in the Narrows Marina parking lot is reserved for slip holders only. Slip holders are requested to park only one vehicle in the parking lot. Please car pool guests from Great Festival Park. Property owners in the Narrows should use Great Festival Park for any overflow parking.

Also, now is the time of year we have all of our deer babies (fawns) running close to the roadway. Please slow down and give them a chance to survive. If you see a fawn laying by themselves, donâ€™t go near them; their mother will return. The doe (adult female deer) will rarely be found near her fawn for the first few weeks of its life because her presence may attract predators. ARCHITECTURAL EXTERIOR WORK POLICY When an Exterior Work Permit is approved, the owner will be sent an 8 Â˝ x 11 permit that shall be placed in a window on the first floor of the property. The blue permit sign indicates that work on the property was reviewed and approved by the Architectural Review Committee.

HOW TO PULL A BOAT OUT OF THE WATER: GETTING YOUR BOAT ON THE TRAILER ! How you get the boat onto the trailer will vary a bit depending on your rig, how steep the ramp incline is, and how deep the water is at the ramp. Trailers with rollers are much easier to load, so it might be best to drive the bow up onto the rollers, then winch the boat the rest of the way onto the trailer. But if the ramp has a steep incline, you may need to use the engine to help. If your trailer has bunks, it’s usually much more effective to use the boat’s power to drive it up the trailer, and on very steep ramps, it can be dangerous to try winching the boat all the way up because it puts a huge amount of stress on the winch, winch post and strap or cable. It always takes a bit of common sense and flexibility to determine the best way to get the boat onto the trailer, make sure the boat is properly aligned and apply that power judiciously. This isn’t a race, and this isn’t the time for haste. A word of warning, before applying any power, always make sure the steering wheel is centered. Otherwise, you’ll drive the boat right out of alignment. Once the boat’s up on the trailer, shut down the engine(s), and tilt up the drive unit(s). Re-connect the bow strap, and give a few turns on the winch to be sure it’s good and tight. Then re-connect the safety chain, and you’re ready to pull the boat out of the water. When you do pull the boat out of the water, remember, don’t stop right there on the ramp. Good trailer-boating etiquette dictates you should always strive to block the launch facility as briefly as possible, so pull up into the parking lot or off the side of the road before you begin preparing for the drive home. As you can see, by following these steps and always keeping safety first your boating experience will be much more enjoyable and stress free.

USE CAUTION ! Propeller wash can erode the sediment just beyond the ramp surface, creating a large hole. The eroded sediment is deposited behind the propeller, creating a mound. Trailer tires can get stuck in these holes, and boats can run aground on the mound. Thanks and Safe Boating. COMMUNITY INTEREST WACS SHOWCASE THEIR PURSE FAVORITES Writer: Tommy C. Simmons and Sarah Martin-Jones | Photographers: Sarah Martin-Jones and Patti Adams Members of Lake Arrowhead’s Women’s Activity Club delighted in an entertaining show-and-tell luncheon featuring the history, lore and mystique of purses or pocket books (if you are of a certain age). Sarah Martin-Jones talked on the origins of purses and explained how designers like CoCo Chanel expanded their design collections by adding purses, the perfect accessory, to their offerings. Carole Holley exhibited some of her custom-designed purses. Carole has been making one-of-a-kind purses for many years and several of the guests at the luncheon brought Carole Holley purses with them. Sharing insights into why certain purses were each person’s favorites was entertaining. The guests brought purses that had been their mothers, purses bought at estate sales, purses obtained on grand trips, purses made especially for them by Carole Holley and utilitarian purses that hold everything and go everywhere. One of the most interesting purses was an evening bag brought by Lydia Sparger along with a photo of her mother-in-law holding the evening bag as she went through a formal receiving line at a political gala. She and her husband have just shaken hands with President John F. Kennedy, who is in the photo with them.

Carole Holley donated one of her gorgeous purses for the club’s raffle. Lydia modeled the purse for guests to admire, but the winner was Kathy Duerr. Chef John Wilbert and his staff created a “pocket pursethemed lunch menu” for the WACs featuring stuffed pocket pasta with garden vegetable marinara, salad and hot fudgefilled muffins. Tables were covered with embroidered bridge table clothes, which had belonged to Tommy Simmons’ mother, printed quotes about purses collated by Sarah Martin-Jones and pots of blooming calla lilies. The Women’s Activity Club meets the second Wednesday of most months. Annual dues are $10 and can be mailed to WAC’s co-treasurer Tommy Simmons, 284 Hillside Drive, Waleska, GA 30183. Future programs include: a trip to the High Museum of Art in Atlanta to view an exhibit from the Phillips Collection; an outing to see the newly re-installed Cyclorama; a luncheon focusing on Appalachian music; and more.

COMMUNITY INTEREST COACH TRIP TO SAVANNAH, JEKYL, ST. SIMONS ISLAND, AND CHARLESTON This five-day, four-night coach trip was a recent fundraiser for the Lake Arrowhead Property Owners Association and pictured are those who enjoyed this trip. Several friends from Laurel Canyon's Soleil community joined us. We also combined our 26 people with another 26 person group from Cumming, GA and as a result, made new friends as we enjoyed the interesting journey. We were blessed with good weather (with the exception of one rainy half day in Savannah and more on our ride home) as we took tram rides, tours, attended the theatre in Savannah, and devoured many good meals. Our coach driver was an excellent chauffeur as we watched movies and played games enroute to and from destinations. We are planning another coach trip to Nashville in October! by Sarah Martin Jones Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine – Gail Honeyman. New York: Penguin Books, 2017 Eleanor Oliphant is many things. Efficient, humorless, dependable, awkward, exact, socially inept. But fine? Not really. As she approaches her thirtieth birthday, she decides to make some changes. Now if only Mother approves… Her story, told in first person, is both cringe and cry worthy, beginning with her efforts to beautify herself for her new love interest – a musician whose eyes are “light brown in the way that a rose is red, or that the sky is blue.” Eleanor is mesmerized by this man, who’s name she doesn’t yet know because they have never met. But her heart yearns for him, especially now that she realizes that never in her life has she “walked hand in hand with anyone. No one has ever rubbed [her] tired shoulders or stroked [her] face.” If only there were someone to share the margherita pizza, Chianti, and two large bottles of Glen’s vodka that she purchases every Friday night and consumes by Sunday evening. Whether she acknowledges it or not, Eleanor is very lonesome in her Glasgow apartment, furnished with secondhand pieces provided by a social worker. So lonesome, isolated, and accustomed to being stared at or ignored that she overlooks how often she is the butt of an office joke. “It doesn’t bother me,” she states bravely, “when people react to my face, to the ridged, white contours of scar tissue that slither across my right cheek, starting at my temple and running all the way down to my chin.” After all, she has Polly, her African violet. “Once you get use to being on your own,” she says, “it becomes normal.” But on Wednesday nights when conversations with Mommy don’t go well, or Friday nights when the vodka begins to take effect, Eleanor longs for human touch – the scalp massage by a hairdresser, the flu jab by a nurse, even the touch from the checkout girl who places coins back in an open hand. Her agony of being alone starts to change when her firm hires another misfit. Raymond, all two-hundred-plus flabby pounds of him, is the new IT person, and whether

Eleanor likes it or not, he seems determined to be her best friend. When both of them befriend Sammy, an elderly man having a heart attack on a street corner, their list of friends multiplies as they are adopted, so to speak, by Sammy’s family. Also, with Raymond’s encouragement and the help of a therapist, Eleanor begins to examine her past – especially an event that occurred when she was ten. She remembers screams – lots of screams – and flames. Now, with people on her side, she can even confront Mummy – the woman who newspapers referred to as “the pretty face of evil.” “The voice in my own head – my own voice – was actually quite sensible, and rational, I’d begun to realize. It was Mummy’s voice that had done all the judging and encouraged me to do so too. I was getting to quite like my own voice, my own thoughts. I wanted more of them. They made me feel good, calm even. They made me feel like me.” By dividing her novel into two parts – the Good Days and the Bad Days, author Gail Honeyman examines both sides of Eleanor’s courageous struggle to begin a new course for her life – one free from Mummy’s critical voice and free from her own shame from the past. A new world opens for her by the end of her story. “This is what I felt,” she says. “The gentle heat of something opening, the way some flowers spread out in the morning at the sight of the sun. I knew what was happening. It was the unscarred piece of my heart. It was just big enough to let in a bit of affection. There was still a tiny bit of room left.”

MY WINE RECOMMENDATION Eleanor swears by her cheap Chianti, but should she ever host a dinner party for her new circle of friends, I would recommend something light and refreshing like a berry wine from Cairn O’Mohr Winery in Perthshire, Scotland. This husband and wife vineyard makes good use of the plentiful crop of berries and flowers that grow nearby. Their Gooseberry and Elderflower Wine is fermented with gooseberries from Fife and then bathed in an elderflower infusion. Juicy, and lemony, it is just the wine for lying in a hammock on a sunny afternoon, something Eleanor needs to do more often. $9
