MEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION: 3-MAN STABLEFORD by Brad
Jones
On Saturday, December 7th, 11 teams of the LA Men’s Golf Association (MGA) braved the cold weather to compete in the 2024 3-Man Stableford tournament. Each team was put in one of two 2 flights, assigned by Playing Handicap. The tournament format was Individual Stroke Play, with each team member assigned a Stableford Quota. (Quota = 36 minus Playing Handicap). In our Stableford competition, a Bogey is worth 1 point, a Par is worth 2 points, a Birdie is worth 4 points, and so on. The team Quota was the sum of all the team member quotas. On the challenging conditions, no team was able to reach their quota of points. Since this is the last MGA tournament before Christmas, we traditionally bring a children’s toy as part of the entry fee. This year we collected 3 giant plastic bags of toys for donation to Must Ministries of Canton!
Tournament results:
Flight One
1st Place – Sean Webb, Brad Jones, Bruce Thomas (Score -7.1)
2nd Place – Jeff Ciupak, Dave Davis, Rex Wallace (Score -13.8)
3rd Place – Jeff Howell, Jonathan Finley, David Lockard (Score -17.9)
Flight Two
1st Place – Paul Bolding, Ron Travis, Mike Johnson (Score -.5)
2nd Place – Scott Hall, Sandy Reynolds, Wayne Glowka (Score -2.2)
3rd Place – Mike Heath, George Jackson, Randy Johnson (Score -4.5)
The LA MGA has a monthly tournament, and Wed/Sat dogfights for all members. Quarterly meetings with dinner are included in the MGA initiation fee. Application forms to join the LA MGA are available in the pro shop at the clubhouse.
Tuesdays for the season The Driving Range closes at 5:00pm daily.
Hours subject to change due to inclement weather/volume.

REMEMBERING I LOVE LUCY
October is officially the final month of the LGA season. The month began with 3 LGA members, Natalie Teuton, Eleanor Gibbons and Arra Bolding qualifying for the Lake Arrowhead Points Championship. Unfortunately, Natalie was not able to attend the event but Eleanor and Arra did well representing us.
The LGA also had a strong showing at the Fairways of Canton Breast Cancer Tournament. On a very cold October day, 16 players represented the LGA at this ladies-only 18 hole scramble. This event really isn’t about winning the scramble; it’s about providing funds locally for women who don’t have the resources for a mammogram or breast cancer treatment. Special thanks to our neighbor Evie Lewis for getting the LGA involved with supporting this event.
Due to the continued cold snap, our final Cat Fight of the season only had 9 players. First place went to Karen Helm with Cynthia Samuels placing 2nd.

Since the temperatures stayed down so did our numbers with only 8 ladies participating in our monthly 9-hole 2-person themed scramble based on the 1950’s TV series I Love Lucy, which was also the event name.. The short version of the inspiring Lucy TV golf episode was as follows. Lucy and her friend, Ethel, decided to take up golf so they could spend more time with their husbands, who had become avid golfers. Ultimately, like many of us, Lucy and Ethel realized that they could have at least as much fun just playing golf with the ”girls”. The 8 of us enjoyed the day and the 4 teams all came in within 3 points of each other. Ultimately, Cindy Boleman and Jan Garbiel took first place.
So please remember that although the season may be officially over, we continue to have organized tee times, and I can almost guarantee that you will have as much fun as Lucy and Ethel, and your game will continue to improve over the winter!

READING FOR THE AGES
by Jeanne Schwartz
When Breath Becomes Air | by
Paul Kalanithi
“You that seek what life is in death, Now find it air that once was breath. New names unknown, old names gone: Till time end bodies, but souls none. Reader! Then make time while you be But steps to your eternity.
Baron Brooke Fulke Greville, Caelica 83
At 35, Dr. Paul Kalanithi began experiencing troubling medical symptoms - severe back pain, weight loss – that are consistent with a cancer diagnosis. And indeed, that ended up to be accurate.
Paul was ten years into grueling medical training, and needed only 15 more months to complete his residency. His concentration was neurosurgery and neuroscience, the study and treatment of the brain. But Paul was equally interested in the mind; specifically, what makes human life meaningful. For that, he pursued degrees in literature, which he felt provided the richest material for moral reflection. He ended up with two B.A.s and an M.A. in literature at Stanford, then a Master of Philosophy at Cambridge, before graduating cum laude from the Yale School of Medicine.
This unique combination of passions enabled the experience and telling of the remarkable journey of a doctor/patient/scholar/author living with a terminal illness. His honest, clear-eyed exploration of his brain and his mind returned often to the concept of time and how to best use it. Perhaps that is because one of the most poignant things about Paul’s story is that he had postponed learning how to live while pursuing his career in neurosurgery. By the time he was ready to enjoy a life outside the operating room, what he needed to learn was how to die.
He observed that coming into such close contact with his own mortality had changed both everything and nothing. “Before my cancer was diagnosed, I knew that someday I would die, but I didn’t know when. After the diagnosis, I knew that someday I would die, but I didn’t know when.”
“My state of knowledge was the same, but my ability to make lunch plans had been shot to hell. The way forward would seem obvious, if only I knew how many months or years I had left. Tell me three months, I’d spend time with my family. Tell me one year, I’d write a book. Give me ten years I’d be back to treating diseases.”
Paul’s treatment did enable him to resume surgery, although on a much more limited schedule. He and his wife Lucy decided to try to have a child, and Cady was born 8 months before his death. When the cancer returned,

Paul accepted the fact that his days of being a doctor were over, and he turned to writing, wearing a pair of silver-lined gloves when the pain of chemotherapy rendered his keyboarding fingers useless. His musings about time continued, with his later-stage observations including this: “The future, instead of a ladder toward the goals of life, flattens out into a perpetual present.”

It is this exploration of time and meaning that so neatly divides the memoir into two sections: “In Perfect Health I Begin” and “Cease Not Until Death.”
In the first half of the book, Paul provides rich insight into the life of a neurosurgeon, and also shows us the humanity that is not always burdened by heaviness, but also leavened with humor. He cites an example from his relationship with his fellow resident, Jeff, with whom he worked traumas. Jeff would always ask for Paul’s prognosis on a patient’s cognitive function. “Well, he could still be a senator,” Paul once replied, “but only from a small state.” From then on, state population became a barometer for head-injury severity. “Is he a Wyoming or a California?” Jeff would ask.
In the second half of the book, Paul acknowledges that his process, his way of coming to acceptance with his life and his death, must include writing; he cites Hemingway, who described his own process as “acquiring rich experiences, then retreating to cogitate and write about them.”
One of the most beautiful passages in the book comes toward the end of the sections Paul was able to write. He speaks to his daughter Cady: “When you come to one of the many moments in life where you must give an account of yourself, provide a ledger of what you have been and done, and meant to the world, do not, I pray, discount that you filled a dying man’s days with a sated joy, a joy unknown to me in all my prior years, a joy that does not hunger for more and more but rests, satisfied. In this time, right now, that is an enormous thing.”
When Breath Becomes Air is a beautifully written book that shows us that we can't control the matter or timing of our death, but we can choose how we approach it. One reviewer said, “It took me awhile to get to this book, and given our finite time on this planet, I highly recommend you don't make the same error.”
