LAKE ARROWHEAD MGA AND BRIDGEMILL MGA CHALLENGE CUP
The Lake Arrowhead MGA and Bridgemill MGA squared off in their 9th annual LA / BM Challenge Cup on Saturday, October 26th and Sunday October 27th. We could not have had better weather conditions to play in over these two days! This event puts forth 21 MGA members + the Club pro from each club. The teams play for a total of 55 points over the two days in 3 two-man team based formats and 1 individual format. Day one of the event began at Lake Arrowhead with our teams playing 9 holes of 2-man Best Ball and 9 holes of Alternate Shot with 22 total points up for grabs. The LA team did well in the Best Ball Format coming out ahead 6 to 5. The Alternate shot format resulted in a big LA advantage of 8 ½ to 2 ½, leaving total Day one results in LA’s advantage of 14 ½ to 7 ½. Although LA had a 7-point advantage after day one, there were a lot of points available, 33 points in the day two formats, for BM to overcome the deficit.

Day Two of the event was played at Bridgemill with our teams playing 9 holes of 2-man Scramble and then finishing with 9 holes of 22 singles matches. The 2-man scramble resulted in a BM advantage of 7 ½ to 3 ½ over our LA team. This gave LA a 3-point advantage heading into the singles matches. The BM team put forth a valiant effort to try to overcome this LA lead, but it was not enough, as LA held on in the singles matches format 10 to 12. Brian Schell had to make a 5-footer on 18 to secure the Cup! The 2-day event completed with Lake Arrowhead holding on to the Cup with a 28 to 27 win over the Bridgemill team. MGA TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS On Wed October 30th at 2:00 PM, the 2024 Lake Arrowhead Men’s Golf Association (MGA) Tournament of Champions was held. The 10 participants were those who earned the most points in MGA tournaments throughout the year through their strong performance. (Qualifiers Larry Adams and Bill Maynard were unable to play, so the next highest point winners were brought in) All ten players teed off together on hole number 10, with one player eliminated on each hole, until only the winner remained after Hole 18. If there was no single player with the highest score on a hole, the players tied for the highest score had a chip-off to determine who would be eliminated. $1600 was distributed to the participants as prize money. Participants from L-R: Paul Bolding, Brad Jones, Mike Stein, Lee Heubner, Jerry Rushing, Sandy Reynolds, Dean LeBlanc, Mike Johnson, Herb Ernst, Deon Barnard. Congratulations to Mike Stein for finishing as the 2024 MGA TOC champion! Here’s how the play went down: • The chip-offs started right away. On the starting hole, Number 10, Brad Jones/Paul Bolding/Jerry Rushing/Herb Ernst chipped off, with Herb being eliminated. • On the tricky Hole 11, Sandy Reynolds went out. • On the long par 4 number 12, Deon Barnard left the competition. • On the par-3 Hole 13, a 5-way chip off between Lee Heubner/Paul Bolding/Mike Stein/Jerry Rushing/Mike Johnson resulted in Mike Johnson ending his run. • On the dangerous 14th Hole, Paul Bolding was the next man out. • On the tough 15th, Jerry Rushing succumbed to the wicked cat bunkers and was eliminated. • On the short Par 4 16th, Dean LeBlanc lost a chip-off with Lee Heubner/Brad Jones. • On Hole 17, the remaining players all had par. The chip-off between Brad Jones/Lee Heubner/Mike Stein saw Lee Heubner finishing in 3rd place. • On the Par 5 18th, Mike Stein and Brad Jones were both on the green in regulation, but Mike Stein prevailed as the overall TOC Champion! Thanks to all the folks who came to watch and encourage the players! MGA members start earning points for next year’s TOC in the November 23 MGA Turkey Shoot. TURKEY SHOOT GOLF TOURNAMENT On Saturday, November 16, 46 golfers (divided into 23, two-person teams) played in Lake Arrowhead’s fourteenth annual Turkey Shoot Golf Tournament. This year’s event, which began with a 9:00 am shotgun, included three golfing formats, each played for six holes - alternate shot, best ball, and scramble. At the end of play, the 23 teams were placed into one of three flights according to their final 18-hole score. Prizes were awarded to the top three teams in each flight. The tournament was won by Vic Martin & Jeff Ciupak!

DIAMOND GLOW AND MORE August, the end of summer and the heat was on and so was the LGA! Club Championship, Member-Member, and our LGA monthly events. Let’s start with our winners! Eleanor Gibbons held the ladies Club Championship with the best gross score. Michelle Maynard placed 2nd and Kim Brophy 3rd. VP Natalie Teuton placed 1st with the best net score. Lynn DeWolfe placed second and President Arra Bolding took 3rd place. That’s a strong showing for the LGA with 6 of the 7 winners LGA members. If Michelle ever retires I hope someday she’ll join us. The LGA had a strong showing at the MemberMember event with 8 LGA members playing. The ladies had enough teams to have their own flight! That was a win! Michelle Maynard and Pam Glasgow took 1st place with Eleanor and Natalie placing 2nd! Congratulations to all the ladies that came out for club events. Our monthly Cat Fight was held on the very hot 1st day of August and Christy Stewart was on fire! She needed to pull 25 points and finished with 33. I think she was still floating since she got engaged a few days before our event! Karen Helm placed second. Nice to share such joy!
Finally our monthly themed event, the Diamond Glow. Still hot, but 10 ladies came out glowing. The event was our monthly 2 person 9 hole scramble. I was fortunate to be paired Grace Kreft. We played alongside Glenda Hinton and Cindy Boleman. Cindy unfortunately broke her driver that morning. Uel graciously loaned her a new one, but they were definitely playing with a disadvantage. Happy to be back in the air conditioning, we found our tables were decorated with large diamonds by Grace. Lunch was served. Arra once again generously brought her homemade Pound Cake and Peanut Butter Balls. The final winners for the month of August were announced. Grace and I took 1st place and Arra and Patti Adams placed 2nd. Ultimately, the biggest win of August went to Rosa Canela-Brio our Outside Services Team Leader when she was sworn in as a United States citizen. Our sincere congratulations! Congratulations to all our August winners and to everyone who came out and played in the stifling heat. Despite the heat, LGA play was cool as ever.

That’s the heart behind the 35th annual Golfing Fore Children tournament sponsored by Lake Arrowhead Church. Helping children in need is the reason we sponsor this golf tournament year after year
As a church in our community, we are called and compelled to teach God’s truth and to share God’s love. Thanks to each of you for helping us do that by participating in this year’s golf tournament. As the Bible says, may we continue to “do good to others, to be generous and willing to share” (1 Timothy 6:17-18). God bless each of you. page 14

was an example of community at its best. Nothing is better than when a community rallies together to help others. The mission partners of our church receiving financial support from the tournament include – Goshen Valley Boys Ranch and Foundation, MUST Ministries, Fellowship of Christian AthletesCherokee County, Mega Sports Camp, Student Services of Cherokee County Schools, The Pregnancy Center in Jasper, and Operation Christmas Child. In their unique ways, each of these organizations serves needy and vulnerable children.

club business SHORT-TERM RENTAL ORDINANCE CHEROKEE COUNTY, GEORGIA Cherokee County, Georgia has recently adopted an ordinance regarding short-term rentals. The full ordinance is available at ShortTermRentalOrdinanceCherokeeCounty20210806.pdf (cherokeega.com), but we wanted to make each property owner aware of this ordinance and have highlighted a few of the key points in the ordinance. 1. The purpose of the ordinance is to establish standards for short-term rentals of privately-owned residential structures rented to transient occupants, minimize adverse effects of short-term rental uses on surrounding residential neighborhoods, and preserve the character of residential neighborhoods. 2. A certificate is required to lawfully rent, operate, or advertise any property for short-term rental. a. Owners must apply to the Cherokee County Development Services Center on an annual basis for a certificate. b. Certificates require an initial administration fee and annual renewal fees. 3. The Certificate number must be listed in any advertisement for the rental of the property. 4. No short-term rental shall offer more than five (5) bedrooms for rent. 5. The use of outdoor speakers by short-term rentals is prohibited. 6. The number of occupants shall not exceed two persons per bedroom plus two additional persons. 7. The short-term rental must have parking off the street sufficient for one car for each bedroom being rented. Parking shall only be on designated hard surfaced areas. 8. Quiet hours are 12:00 a.m. midnight to 7:00 a.m. daily, 12:00 a.m. midnight Saturday to 1:00 p.m. Sunday). 9. The Cherokee County Marshal’s office (678.493.4080) is tasked with enforcement of the ordinance

DRY STORAGE Renewal contracts will be mailed to Property Owners who currently lease a space. All items MUST display a current decal to continue using a Lake Arrowhead Dry Storage and Boat Slip. As a reminder, it is a violation of the covenants to park or store the following: boats, vehicles, trailers, campers, RVs, etc. on your property. Agreements may be terminated at any time due to past due accounts.

https://library.municode.com/ga/cherokee_county/ordinances/code_of_ordinances?nodeId=1106313 In order to protect and preserve the residential character, property values, and enjoyment of all homeowners within the Lake Arrowhead community, please observe the following guidelines for relative to short-term property rentals of Lake Arrowhead Phase I units. 1. Short-term property rentals (less than 6 months) are strictly prohibited in both Phase II and Phase III of Lake Arrowhead. The maximum number of occupants should be restricted to no more than two individuals per bedroom. 2. Short-term rentals should be registered with LA Security gate they intend to enter, and identified as short-term rentals so that the appropriate identification may be provided at check-in a. Amenity use cards, identifying renters and associated unit address b. Vehicle “hang tag” for vehicles 3. All rental agreements should include an acknowledgement that renters have received and agree to abide by the Lake Arrowhead Rules and Regulations a. If boat usage is included with the rental of the home, a printed copy of the lake rules and restrictions should be included with the rental agreement, a copy should be left in the home, and a laminated copy should be placed in the boat and/or attached to the boat key b. Violations of the lake rules and regulations may result in revocation of the issued boat permit and result in suspension of lake access privileges 4. Homeowners are responsible for the actions of guests and renters of their home and violations of the Covenants or Rules and Regulations will typically be handled in the following manner: a. 1st infraction – issuance of written warning to homeowner b. 2nd infraction – 30-day suspension of common property access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters c. 3rd infraction – 12-month suspension of common amenity access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters d. 4th infraction – permanent loss of common amenity access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters e. Addition steps may be taken depending on the nature of the infraction, including contacting the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department or taking additional legal to enforce the community governing documents f. Common property damage by renters, if applicable, will be levied against the lot owner g. Egregious infractions may result in immediate suspension of common property access and privileges or other sanctions 5. “Party Houses” are strictly prohibited and deemed a nuisance and violation of the Lake Arrowhead Covenants, Article III, Section 19. Party Houses are also prohibited by popular short-term rental companies (Airbnb and VRBO) and nuisance properties will be reported to the appropriate listing entity.

club business MARINA PAVILION RULES AND REGULATIONS: • HOURS OF OPERATION The Marina Pavilion will be open dawn to dusk or during sanctioned LAYCC events. • FOOD & BEVERAGE Food and beverages are allowed to be carried onto the Pavilion. No glass bottles or beer kegs are permitted. No grilling or preparation of food is allowed. All trash must be placed in the trash receptacles on the shore. • PERSONAL CHAIRS Property owners are allowed to bring their own folding chairs on to the Pavilion. They must be taken with you when you leave, i.e. chairs cannot be left behind. • ATTIRE Members and guests shall dress in attire befitting the surroundings of the community. Extremely revealing attire, such as a thong, is not suitable for the family atmosphere of the Marina Pavilion.
• NO SWIMMING No swimming is permitted from the Marina Pavilion or docks anywhere in the “No Wake” zone. No running or diving is permitted from the Pavilion or docks. • NO FISHING No fishing is allowed from the Marina Pavilion or docks. • BOATS Boats can tie up on the side of the walkway only where there are cleats and cannot at any time tie up to the Pavilion. Maximum time at the walkway is 1 hour (or 15 minutes if others are waiting). These areas are intended for drop off and pickup. • PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES No grilling, skateboarding, bicycles, rollerblading, sunbathing, or feeding the wildlife is permitted on the Marina Pavilion or docks. • PETS Pets are not allowed on the Marina Pavilion.
RULES OF THE LAKE 1. All requirements set forth in the Georgia Boating Safety Act shall apply on Lake Arrowhead lakes (Lake Arrowhead and Lake Chickasaw). This includes carrying life preservers for passengers and crew. 2. Only registered watercraft displaying a current Lake Arrowhead registration decal are permitted on Lake Arrowhead lakes. 3. All watercraft operating in the northern part of Lake Arrowhead, as well as other areas with NO WAKE buoys, must use a speed that generates no wake. 4. The body of water viewed from the Marina area (a.k.a. main lake) is an all sports area. All motorized watercraft are to follow a COUNTER CLOCKWISE direction. 5. At slow speeds, traffic can go in either direction on the lake ONLY in these locations: Within 100 ft North of the dam, within 100 ft South of the Narrows "No Wake Buoys", and in the middle on an East/West straight line to/from "Honeymoon Cove." 6. All watercraft pulling people (i.e. skier, tuber, etc.) must have either two (2) persons aboard (one driver and one safety observer at least 12 years of age) or the watercraft MUST be equipped with a wide angle rear view mirror so the driver is aware of the location of the person being pulled at all times. All people being pulled MUST wear approved U.S Coast Guard life vests. 7. The number of skiers is limited to two (2) per boat at the same time. As soon as one skier drops the second skier must drop immediately thereafter. Skiers should raise one (1) ski, wakeboard, or kneeboard while in water with a slack towline to warn other boats in the area. 8. All occupants of canoes, rowboats, hydrobikes, paddleboats, SUPs, kayaks, etc., should wear appropriate life vests. These vessels should stay close to a shore (Georgia
law requires children 10 and under to wear a life jacket at all times on a boat unless the child is in an enclosed cabin). 9. All watercraft must use running lights after sundown. Use docking lights when approaching a docking area only, they can be blinding to other boaters. 10. Swimming in the lake is not permitted in and around the Marina area other than in the designated Swimming Area. All children, below a responsible age, swimming in the lake must wear a life vest and be supervised by an adult 18 years of age or older. Calendar 11. community interest READING FOR THE AGES by Jeanne Schwartz James by Percival Everett | Doubleday, New York 2024 Book Review – 2025 Look Ahead I’ve been at this awhile, and it occurs to me that it is time to ask what you would like to consider for your reading. I’ve tried to write reviews in various genres. 2024 included: Jan/Feb: The Last One, by Will Dean: A thriller/locked room mystery on board a cruise ship. Feb/March: Next Year in Havana, by Chanel Cleeton: Historical novel, set in two timelines, beginning in 1959 March/April: The Covenant of Water, by Adam Verghese. A multi-generational tale set in India, with medical and human conditions themes. April/May: About Grace, by Anthony Doerr: Atmospheric, metaphysical, escapism novel. May/June: Before We Were Yours, by Lisa Wingate: Historical “novel” about the Tennessee Children’s Home Society, which stole countless children without cause or due process. June/July/August: The Hotel Nantucket, by Elin Hildebrand: Your beach read. Repeated in two subsequent months! Plot centered around a renovated hotel seeking to win a coveted prize: when do YOU celebrate summer? August/September: The Bird Hotel, by Joyce Maynard: A woman escapes her life to re-settle in a paradise under a volcano. September/October: Untamed: The Wildest Woman in America and the Fight for Cumberland Island Non-fiction: An amazing story about a woman you most likely don’t know, but who has played a large part in Georgia’s sea turtles, wild horses and other species’ health. October/November: Fourteen Days, edited by Margaret Atwood and Douglas Preston: A collaborative novel, written by 36 authors, set on a rooftop in NYC in the very early days of Covid. Brilliant. November/December: Bright Objects, by Ruby Todd: A comet cult novel set in Australia; much different than others in the genre. For 2025, I’m starting off with When Breath Becomes Air, by Paul Kalinithi, a powerful non-fiction book written (mostly) by a neurosurgeon dying from cancer. Don’t be put off. It is inspiring. That will be followed by James, by Percival Everett, a re-imagining of Huck Finn and Big Jim the slave, traveling together to escape their circumstances. Named by many as the best book of 2024. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, written by Samuel Clemens, pen name Mark Twain in 1884, is considered one of the greatest works of American literature, and also one of the most controversial because it taps into the language and themes of racism. The book has been banned many times --including right after it was first published – but authenticity demands the usage of the language of the time and place. James’ story takes place in Missouri during slave times. The characters in the book include young Huck Finn; his friend from a prior book, Tom Sawyer - both White; and Big Jim, an enslaved Black man. In both books, Big Jim becomes a runaway to avoid being sold away from his wife and children, and Huck Finn becomes a runaway after faking his own death to get away from his abusive father. Huck and Jim meet up on the run, and travel together to escape to the North. Huck Finn is a caper: even though it involves two unlikely compatriots on the run, the “adventures” in the title are central to the story, and the tall tales and over-the-top events the two go through keep it light and entertaining. It is a young boy’s dream. Everybody is always trying to put something over on somebody! Percival Everett’s book, James, tells the same story, but with Jim at the center, no longer a sidekick. James is a fully realized, introspective observer of the world around him, generous and sly. James and Huck still need to try to pull off tricks and escapes, but the mood is much more serious. In Huckleberry Finn, Jim speaks the language of slaves: “sho’ nuff, massuh,” and behaves accordingly. James, by contrast is well-read, philosophical and highly intelligent, but everything he says is put through a slave filter so that he sounds as he is expected to sound. For example, James teaches his children that “The better they feel, the safer we are.” But he also teaches them to say it like this: “Da mo’ betta dey feels, da mo’ safer we be.” This James encounters John Locke and Voltaire in his dreams, and lives for the pencil stub he is given by an enslaved boy who is lynched for stealing it. This James is set free by ideas, and as he travels with Huck, he develops a sense of injustice he had not had back at home. He muses to himself that he was “befriending his anger, learning not only how to feel it but perhaps how to use it.” As James and Huck travel together at night in their raft or canoe, stopping by daylight to put their fishing lines out and
community interest sleep, they become close, and Huck begins to notice that James sometimes talks in his sleep as if he is not a slave at all. But he trusts James, and James takes care of him. Their bond is stronger than Huck knows. Along the way, the two encounter men who would take them captive, or take advantage of them in strange or horrible ways. Their protection is to maintain the fiction that Huck was the owner of James, his slave. But that doesn’t stop James from being taken to sell. For example, two shysters concoct a plan to sell James, and then have him escape so they can sell him again, and reap a fortune in the process. The Virginia Minstrels, a blackface singing group, at one point buy James to replace a tenor they lost, painting him black in such a way that he appears like a White man trying to pass for Black. The antics are ludicrous. The stakes are high. And as the book nears its climax, and a revealed James encounters his original master, he is told: “... you are in more trouble than you can imagine.” And James says: “Why on earth would you think that I can’t imagine the trouble I’m in? After you’ve tortured me and eviscerated me and emasculated me and left me to burn slowly to death, is there something else you’ll do to me? Tell me, Judge Thatcher, what is there that I can’t imagine?” The best way to appreciate Everett’s reimagining is to read – or re-read – The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn along with James. It’s a masterpiece of the power of perspective.
Criticisms of Huck Finn concerned Twain’s intentional use of bad grammar, that they believe contributes to negative racial stereotypes. Some feminists have disliked what they consider to be Twain’s negative, sexist portrayals of females. But alleged racist content has been the reason most often cited for banning or challenging Huck Finn, particularly since 1957 and the rise of the Civil Rights movement in the United States.

If you are new to Pickleball or want to play for fun and exercise, please join our Recreational Group. The intermediate and advanced groups are for experienced players who want to advance their skills to compete in leagues and/or tournaments.
All players are welcome to join, level is approximately B5 ALTA and 3.0-3.5 USTA. Courts are reserved for this Doubles group during the times mentioned previously. Players should be aware that like any sport, warming up, having the proper gear, bringing water, towels, and stretching afterwards are all important components of a successful, injury free experience.
