2024 POINTS CHAMPIONSHIP On Wednesday October 2, Dennis Bush defeated Vic Martin on the last hole to win the 15th annual Points Championship.

This event, which is possibly the most unique and pressure packed tournament of the year. According to the tournament rules, all ten players start at the same time, on the same hole. At the end of each hole, the golfer with the highest score is eliminated from the tournament. If two players tie with the highest score, a chip off is held to determine who advances. The closest to the hole continues unless there are 3 or more players in the chip off. In that case, the player that is farthest from the hole is eliminated. This process continues for nine holes until only one golfer remains.

Golf members earn points throughout the year by playing in Club sponsored golf tournaments. They receive 10 points for participating in a tournament but can earn more by winning or finishing at least fourth in a tournament. 10 members qualify to play in the Points Championship. This year we had a last-minute withdrawal due to medical reasons. These qualifiers are pictured below.

The format of the Points Championship, known specifically as a “nine hole shoot out” brings a different type of pressure than any other played in Lake Arrowhead. It is, for example, the only one where a high score on a hole can result in elimination from the tournament. In addition, it is the only tournament where family and friends follow along to cheer on their favorite participants.

This adds a little extra excitement and pressure for the golfers in that almost every shot draws some type of vocal response from the crowd. For many of us, these pressures tend to turn our brains into mush, particularly in the early holes where elimination is disappointing.

Everyone got a bye on the first hole since we had the withdrawal. 11 saw Rick Salese eliminated.

Hole 12 was the end of the run for Arra Bolding. The 13th hole was the last hole for Eleanor Gibbons.

The 14th hole was the end of the day for George Gibbons. The 15th hole was the demise of Todd Roberts. Hole 16 was a chip off between all four remaining competitors, Brian Schell, Dennis Bush, Brad Jones, and Vic Martin. Brian Schell was eliminated. Brad Jones’ run came to an end on hole 17.

Dennis Bush and Vic Martin tied on 18 with net pars. Dennis Bush won the chip off for the victory!

Congratulations to all the participants on a great season and qualifying for the Points Championship.

AYRES AND SHARP WIN THE 2024 MEMBER-GUEST TOURNAMENT After two days of golf and a shootout among flight winners, Jon Ayres and his Guest, JR Sharp, won this year’s MemberGuest Tournament. After shooting a net 76 (4 over par) on Saturday, they followed up with a net 65 on Sunday to win their flight. This put them into a shootout with two other flight winners to determine the Tournament Champions. All three teams tied 17 with pars. George Gibbons and Keith Gervickas were eliminated in the chip off. Brain Schell and Brian Waggoner tied 18 with Jon Ayres and JR Sharp. Jon and JR won the chip off for the title!

But this was just part of the Member-Guest story line. Official Tournament activities began on Saturday with an 18-hole best

ball competition, lunch and dinner. Activities concluded on Sunday with an 18-hole scramble, lunch, and the shootout.

The competition in all the flights was close and the food prepared by the Club was outstanding! The general consensus of the participants (members and guests alike) was that this was truly an outstanding event.

Overall 25 member-guest teams played this year. Prior to the Tournament, the Club’s professional staff divided the teams into flights according to their combined handicaps. This helps to ensure that the teams were evenly matched during the competition. The flight winners and their combined net scores for the two days are shown below:

SIZZLING SEPTEMBER September was off to a great start with LGA member Peggy Flannagan making a hole in one on the second hole September first.

Congratulations Peggy!

Ten ladies competed in the LGA 9-hole September two-person scramble, deemed Gone with the Wind. Indeed, the wind was gone though I could have used at least a breeze behind my ball. Despite the name, not a Scarlet O’Hara costume amongst the group. (No surprise in the late Summer heat!) I doubt Aunt Pittipat ever swung a golf club in her hoop skirt.

Lunch was preordered, so we were served in a very timely manner and, as we’ve joyously come to expect, Arra brought another scrumptious homemade dessert.

After lunch, victors were announced: First place prize went to Patti Adams and Grace Kreft, with Roz Waldron and Cynthia Samuels placing second.

The first Thursday of the month an 18 hole Cat Fight on another stifling hot summer day featured 10 ladies heroically fighting on!

Although I should not be surprised by great play with the LGA, I was still amazed that VP Natalie Teuton came in with 39 points(!) making her the big winner. President Arra Bolding placed second. So we had both leadership and performance from our senior officers. Coincidently they wore matching shirts; hope you like the photo.

On a different subject, special LGA thanks goes to Arra’s husband Paul and his son Paul Jr who spent several hours installing the LGA Memorial Bench just off the cart path between holes 9 and 18 hole next to the MGA Memorial Bench. By the time this article is published plaques should be on the bench. Take a moment to stop and page 14

remember friends who’ve passed away.

Since the LGA is so much more than competing in our events, several LGA members volunteered to help with the Special Olympics Golf Tournament held at Lake Arrowhead that was sponsored by the Kathy B. Davis Foundation which is based here in Lake Arrowhead. Its stated purpose is To support and create life enhancing opportunities for individuals with intellectual/developmental challenges.

The LGA volunteers helped out starting with participants check-in. LGA members also partnered with athletes to achieve points at skill stations. Points are awarded for demonstrating proficiency to meet the required threshold to compete in Special Olympics tournaments. Skills tested were long and short putts, pitching and chipping, fairway irons and woods.

Accuracy and adequate distance were needed to achieve the 60 point threshold.

My LGA partner, Debbie Haley, and I had a lot of fun with the athletes and we could tell by the smiles that the athletes enjoyed the process. Ultimately, I think LGA member Eleanor Frongillo had the best time as official photographer. She was certainly able to capture many happy and proud moments of athletes and their families. The support to the Foundation and athletes made me proud to be an LGA member!

club business SHORT-TERM RENTAL ORDINANCE CHEROKEE COUNTY, GEORGIA Cherokee County, Georgia has recently adopted an ordinance regarding short-term rentals. The full ordinance is available at ShortTermRentalOrdinanceCherokeeCounty20210806.pdf (cherokeega.com), but we wanted to make each property owner aware of this ordinance and have highlighted a few of the key points in the ordinance.

1. The purpose of the ordinance is to establish standards for short-term rentals of privately-owned residential structures rented to transient occupants, minimize adverse effects of short-term rental uses on surrounding residential neighborhoods, and preserve the character of residential neighborhoods.

2. A certificate is required to lawfully rent, operate, or advertise any property for short-term rental. a. Owners must apply to the Cherokee County Development Services Center on an annual basis for a certificate. b. Certificates require an initial administration fee and annual renewal fees.

3. The Certificate number must be listed in any advertisement for the rental of the property.

4. No short-term rental shall offer more than five (5) bedrooms for rent.

5. The use of outdoor speakers by short-term rentals is prohibited.

6. The number of occupants shall not exceed two persons per bedroom plus two additional persons.

7. The short-term rental must have parking off the street sufficient for one car for each bedroom being rented. Parking shall only be on designated hard surfaced areas.

8. Quiet hours are 12:00 a.m. midnight to 7:00 a.m. daily, 12:00 a.m. midnight Saturday to 1:00 p.m. Sunday).

9. The Cherokee County Marshal’s office (678.493.4080) is tasked with enforcement of the ordinance

Boat registration forms may be downloaded from the website at lakearrowheadclub.net. Proof of liability insurance with limits not less than $300,000 is required for all motorized boats. Please mail a boat registration form and insurance to: LAYCC 486 Arrowridge, Waleska, GA 30183, email membership@lakearrowheadga.com, use the property owner drop boxes located at both security gates, or bring your form to the South Gate and the Administration office.

ARCHITECTURAL EXTERIOR WORK POLICY When an Exterior Work Permit is approved, the owner will be sent an 8 ½ x 11 permit that shall be placed in a window on the first floor of the property. The blue permit sign indicates that work on the property was reviewed and approved by the Architectural Review Committee.

DRY STORAGE Renewal contracts will be mailed to Property Owners who currently lease a space. All items MUST display a current decal to continue using a Lake Arrowhead Dry Storage and Boat Slip. As a reminder, it is a violation of the covenants to park or store the following: boats, vehicles, trailers, campers, RVs, etc. on your property. 1. Short-term property rentals (less than 6 months) are strictly prohibited in both Phase II and Phase III of Lake Arrowhead. The maximum number of occupants should be restricted to no more than two individuals per bedroom.

2. Short-term rentals should be registered with LA Security gate they intend to enter, and identified as short-term rentals so that the appropriate identification may be provided at check-in a. Amenity use cards, identifying renters and associated unit address b. Vehicle “hang tag” for vehicles 3. All rental agreements should include an acknowledgement that renters have received and agree to abide by the Lake Arrowhead Rules and Regulations a. If boat usage is included with the rental of the home, a printed copy of the lake rules and restrictions should be included with the rental agreement, a copy should be left in the home, and a laminated copy should be placed in the boat and/or attached to the boat key b. Violations of the lake rules and regulations may result in revocation of the issued boat permit and result in suspension of lake access privileges 4. Homeowners are responsible for the actions of guests and renters of their home and violations of the Covenants or Rules and Regulations will typically be handled in the following manner: a. 1st infraction – issuance of written warning to homeowner b. 2nd infraction – 30-day suspension of common property access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters c. 3rd infraction – 12-month suspension of common amenity access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters d. 4th infraction – permanent loss of common amenity access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters e. Addition steps may be taken depending on the nature of the infraction, including contacting the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department or taking additional legal to enforce the community governing documents f. club business MARINA PAVILION RULES AND REGULATIONS: • HOURS OF OPERATION The Marina Pavilion will be open dawn to dusk or during sanctioned LAYCC events.

• FOOD & BEVERAGE Food and beverages are allowed to be carried onto the Pavilion. No glass bottles or beer kegs are permitted. No grilling or preparation of food is allowed. All trash must be placed in the trash receptacles on the shore.

• PERSONAL CHAIRS Property owners are allowed to bring their own folding chairs on to the Pavilion. They must be taken with you when you leave, i.e. chairs cannot be left behind.

• ATTIRE Members and guests shall dress in attire befitting the surroundings of the community. Extremely revealing attire, such as a thong, is not suitable for the family atmosphere of the Marina Pavilion.

• NO SWIMMING No swimming is permitted from the Marina Pavilion or docks anywhere in the “No Wake” zone. No running or diving is permitted from the Pavilion or docks.

• NO FISHING No fishing is allowed from the Marina Pavilion or docks.

• BOATS Boats can tie up on the side of the walkway only where there are cleats and cannot at any time tie up to the Pavilion. Maximum time at the walkway is 1 hour (or 15 minutes if others are waiting). These areas are intended for drop off and pickup.

• PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES No grilling, skateboarding, bicycles, rollerblading, sunbathing, or feeding the wildlife is permitted on the Marina Pavilion or docks.

• PETS Pets are not allowed on the Marina Pavilion.

RULES OF THE LAKE 1. All requirements set forth in the Georgia Boating Safety Act shall apply on Lake Arrowhead lakes (Lake Arrowhead and Lake Chickasaw). This includes carrying life preservers for passengers and crew.

2. Only registered watercraft displaying a current Lake Arrowhead registration decal are permitted on Lake Arrowhead lakes.

3. All watercraft operating in the northern part of Lake Arrowhead, as well as other areas with NO WAKE buoys, must use a speed that generates no wake.

4. The body of water viewed from the Marina area (a.k.a. main lake) is an all sports area. All motorized watercraft are to follow a COUNTER CLOCKWISE direction.

5. At slow speeds, traffic can go in either direction on the lake ONLY in these locations: Within 100 ft North of the dam, within 100 ft South of the Narrows "No Wake Buoys", and in the middle on an East/West straight line to/from "Honeymoon Cove."

6. All watercraft pulling people (i.e. skier, tuber, etc.) must have either two (2) persons aboard (one driver and one safety observer at least 12 years of age) or the watercraft MUST be equipped with a wide angle rear view mirror so the driver is aware of the location of the person being pulled at all times. All people being pulled MUST wear approved U.S Coast Guard life vests.

7. The number of skiers is limited to two (2) per boat at the same time. As soon as one skier drops the second skier must drop immediately thereafter. Skiers should raise one (1) ski, wakeboard, or kneeboard while in water with a slack towline to warn other boats in the area.

8. All occupants of canoes, rowboats, hydro­bikes, paddleboats, SUPs, kayaks, etc., should wear appropriate life vests. These vessels should stay close to a shore (Georgia

law requires children 10 and under to wear a life jacket at all times on a boat unless the child is in an enclosed cabin).

9. All watercraft must use running lights after sundown.

Use docking lights when approaching a docking area only, they can be blinding to other boaters.

10. Swimming in the lake is not permitted in and around the Marina area other than in the designated Swimming Area. All children, below a responsible age, swimming in the lake must wear a life vest and be supervised by an adult 18 years of age or older.

Sylvia Knight lost her husband two years ago in a hit and run that has never been solved. She works at a local funeral home, lives alone with her cat, and has most of her interactions with her mother-in-law who is still also grieving the loss of Christopher, her son and Sylvia’s husband.

Sylvia has plans to end her own life on a date she has picked that happens to coincide with the appearance of the comet.

In the meantime, as she awaits the day, she meets Joseph Evans, a local mystic who comes in to plan a funeral for his mother and then cancels it. He knows she has also suffered a loss and invites her to come to his farm for meditation sessions he conducts in an attempt to alleviate pain.

This is all fine and good, but Sylvia spends her free time bugging the police about solving the hit and run crime that took her husband. The back and forth between the search or retribution and the calming, almost hypnotic time she spends at Joseph’s farm messes with her mind, and combined with the imminent arrival of the comet, enhances her introspection to isolation.

Then she meets St. John, the man who discovered the comet and his scientific explanations and experiences serve as a counterpoint to Joseph’s increasingly fatalistic notions about the comet’s approach.

Bright Objects is a cult story, but one that is calm, soothing, not apocalyptic in any way. It’s a slow burn – an almost hypnotic wave gathering power. Joseph cites Jung in one of his sessions at the farm: “He believed that what we blithely call coincidence is more often the meaningful expression of the cosmic interconnectedness of all things, and an example of the way the universe is always speaking to us in signs. It’s our choice whether to heed or ignore them.”

How Sylvia, and the people in her orbit choose to heed or ignore Joseph’s persuasion rings true when compared to the Heaven’s Gate cult or others tied to comets or cosmic events. The prevailing wisdom on the farm, as it prepares for a worldwide festival to take place on the day the comet is closest to the Earth, is that St. John should be viewed as the Tower card in the tarot, which symbolizes the crisis that so often precedes creation, revolution, and release.

St. John of course has a completely opposite viewpoint and considers the obsession of Joseph with the comet as hogwash. He does acknowledge that this is once in many lifetimes event that nobody alive today will see again, and that it is special. But he sees danger in the growing worship of the comet and what it portends.

Sylvia’s search for meaning, closure, and revenge are the heart of this story as she navigates the different facets of her world.

The novel ends in a highly unexpected fashion, which of course I won’t spoil.

It’s a read that will stay with you.

The Heaven’s Gate cult led to the largest mass suicide in the U.S. as 39 people took their lives believing they would transcend to higher beings by means of a spacecraft hidden behind the Ahle-Bopp comet. That real life event happened in 1997, the same year that this story takes place.

There have been other cults un-related to comets, such as the Jim Jones cult in Guyana, where 914 adults and children from the US died in 1978, after Jones coerced members of his People's Temple sect into committing "revolutionary suicide", urging parents to give their children poison, while others were shot trying to flee or forced to drink the deadly liquid.

CHRISTMAS WITH THE CHEROKEE CHORALE Sunday December 15 4pm to 5pm The Cherokee Community Chorale begins the 37th Season with its annual Christmas Concert, Sunday December 15, 4pm to 5pm. The Concert will be performed in the Canton First Methodist Church Sanctuary, 930 Lower Scott Mill Rd, Canton, GA. A festive evening of classic Christmas favorites awaits you. Tickets will be available online a week before the concert at https://cherokeechorale. org. Tickets may also be purchased at the door on December 15th or from Chorale members who live in Lake Arrowhead.

The concert begins with Dan Forrest’s rousing arrangement of “Joy to the World”. It is followed

by Mack Wilberg’s arrangement of “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing”. As a tribute to Alice Parker who arranged music for Robert Shaw, several of her carols will lift all to the Christmas spirit.

This concert features the Cherokee High School Chorus. The CHS Chorus will perform the concert’s second set.

The last set of the evening includes traditional music such as Harry Simeone’s “Twas the Night Before Christmas”, Leroy Anderson’s “Sleigh Ride”, and Elaine Hagenberg’s “Love’s Pure Light”. Per Chorale tradition, all rise for the concluding piece, George Frideric Handel’s “Hallelujah Chorus”.

Founded in 1987, the Chorale has performed classic masterworks such as Handel’s Messiah, the requiems of Mozart, Brahms, Faure and Rutter. The Chorale’s repertoire includes American folk songs and spirituals, patriotic programs and Broadway selections. Over 90 members now sing with the Chorale.

Proceeds from Chorale concert ticket sales are used to support the Cherokee County School District choral music program. Each year, one middle school and one high school choral program receives a $500 grant. The Chorale also provides each year a scholarship grant to a Cherokee County School District student who is enrolled in a college choral music degree program. page 25
