POSTAL PILE-UPS by Georgia
Watts
Google - “In 2013 Amazon contracted with the United States Post Office to deliver packages on Sundays. But in recent years, that business has exploded as Amazon has increasingly come to rely on postal carriers to make “lastmile” deliveries in harder-to-reach rural locations……..… the online retail giant has cut a deal with the U.S. Postal Service to extend delivery of packages to customers to every day of the week.””
Business has EXPLODED puts it mildly after COVID in 2019 for all on-line shopping! Plus, we are definitely a “lastmile” community! And getting bigger by the day!
The result is causing a problem in our paradise! We’re getting LOTS of packages and it’s creating PILES of problems for the post office as well as confusion on our end.
There are currently enough lockers to accommodate the daily arrivals IF the packages are picked up on a timely basis, 216 being at the Great Festival Park site alone. There are approximately 450 packages delivered to LA daily – but less than 20% of those are picked up on the day of delivery. The packages pile up in our small post office since they can’t be put in a box, especially during heavy on-line shopping days such as Amazon Prime Day and on holidays when gifts are exchanged. During those peak times there are 800 packages a day coming through to LA!
All of this is in addition to packages that are too large for the lockers which have to be kept in the post office for pick-up.

A thought would be to have the Post Office expand! They won’t and they can’t. They won’t because there are already plans in place to begin consolidating the smaller post offices into larger ones, ours likely going to Canton. Some have already been moved in Pickens County to the Jasper post office. If and when the Waleska one moves, we’ll all probably have to go to Canton to pick up the packages that are now picked up in Waleska.
Helping to solve the problem:
• Google as of July 14, 2024: “You can contact Amazon customer service and request that they do not use USPS for your orders. It also says you can specify your preferred shopping carrier by adjusting your shipping setting in your Amazon account.” (I haven’t tried this to see if it really works!)
• Pick up your packages daily.
• Exploration of additional boxes, both regular parcel boxes and Amazon, have been and continue to be considered.
• Be courteous. Pick up your packages daily.
• Several new ideas were posted recently on Facebook. Notes of these are being made and they will be passed on.
Please…...pick up your packages daily.

READING FOR THE AGES
by Jeanne Schwartz
Fourteen Days: A Collaborative Novel
Edited by Margaret Atwood and Douglas Preston | Published by Harper
Fourteen Days is a collaborative novel, written by thirty-six American and Canadian authors from all genres, ranging in age from their thirties to mid-eighties. It is not a serial novel or a group of short stories; it is a novel that is populated by story-tellers who have been left behind in New York City during the Covid-19 pandemic, unable to escape to the country-side as many of the city’s more affluent residents were able to do.
Every evening they gather on the rooftop of their shabby building on the lower East Side to bang pots, cheer the Covid responders, and tell stories.
This is an ingenious way to collaborate because it offers stories – what we read for – and they are as diverse, scary, lovely, and enlightening as a reader could hope for. Of course the stories are being told as the Covid epidemic is making its first surge, when all of New York City seemed cursed, and yet blessed by the first responders who tended to the sick, the dying, and the families who could not see them except through glass.
The time made it possible for the super of the building to join with the motley band of tenants on a level playing field of despair, fear, and an attitude that at this particular moment in time there was no reason to hold back a story of regret, crime, or forbidden love out of a sense of propriety. For all they knew, they were doomed.
So they sat, six feet apart, banged their pots and then took turns telling their story.
Special accolades to Douglas Preston, who provided the frame narrative for all of the stories, making the book as seamless as a novel written by one person. He and Margaret Atwood served as executive editors, and the list of people who contributed stories is as illustrious as it is long.
One woman, Amnesia, recounts a story of her mother: “You know how in relationships, one person takes up more space? That’s them. Like if my Mom’s the sun, my Dad is Mercury or something – small and way too close to her to be anything but uncomfortable.” Later in the story her mother dies, and after the funeral service “a few people came by the house with frozen dishes, and then it was just over, a whole life folded neat like a tablecloth, ready to be put away.”
Or a story about Alabama barbeque: “ He was prepared to enjoy his meat, but he was not prepared for what he tasted. He shook his head like his jaw was heavy. The first words out of his mouth after the bite: ‘You giving me the mumps! Then he gnawed on the rib bone in his fingers until it was as clean as something sacred. By then, they all realized he meant the
meat was so good he was going to get fat in the face.”
To tease just one example: Maine, one of the men who made the trek to the rooftop each night, told the story of Elijah Vick, a blues musician he treated after Elijah presented in the ER with an infection that nearly took his arm. Elijah was 45 years old, a successful concert promoter who was born and raised in Memphis.

Maybe the thing he loved most about Memphis, besides the music, was the Mississippi River: he would stare at it for hours. He had been warned to never go into the river because it was “an unsavory sewage ditch that teemed with every category of peril:” sludge, bacteria, and a creature called the Alligator Gar, (Atractosteus spatula), seemingly half fish and half reptile, who was reportedly ten feet long and must have weighed a thousand pounds. But Elijah was obsessed with the river and couldn’t stop wondering what it would be like to jump into it: he imagined it would be cathartic, that the exertion of crossing it would turn him into a different person.
So the story goes on to describe Elijah’s adventure. He camped on the Arkansas River, ten miles upstream from Memphis, and in the morning donned his wetsuit and then strapped on a waterproof backpack he’d stuffed with shoes and a change of clothes. He entered the river. Almost immediately the water surface was rippled and agitated: he could “feel the river pressing in on all sides, grappling with the impertinence of his presence.” His adventure gets as wild as you might expect it to as he is swept downstream.
Fourteen Days will keep you turning the pages, and its format allows for “chapter at a time” reading. However, there is a plot, and a plot twist. The stories and the rooftop gathering itself, give clues to the mystery.
Contributors to Fourteen Days, mostly one author the lead on a story, are: Charlie Jane Anders, Margaret Atwood, Jennine Capo Crucet, Joseph Cassara, Angie Cruz, Pat Cummings, Sylvia Day, Emma Donoghue, Dave Eggers, Diana Gabaldon, Tess Geritsen, John Grisham, Maria Hinojosa, Mira Jacob, Erica Jong, CJ Lyons, Celeste Ng, Tomy Orange, Mary Pope Osborne, Douglas Preston, Alice Randall, Ishmael Reed, Roxana Robinson, Nelly Rosario, James Shapiro, Hampton Sides, R.L. Stine, Nafissa Thompson-Spires, Monique Truong, Scott Turow, Luis Alberto Urrea, Rachel Vail, Weike Wang, Caroline Randall Williams, De-Shawn Charles Winslow, and Meg Worlitzer.

DOUBLES TENNIS
Play year-round on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, weather permitting. 1:30pm during colder months (November through April) and 9:30am during the warmer months (May through October). Format: after 4 games, then teams rotate players. Otherwise ITF Rules of Tennis apply.
All players are welcome to join, level is approximately B5 ALTA and 3.0-3.5 USTA. Courts are reserved for this Doubles group during the times mentioned previously. If you would like to join, please send your name and CELL phone number to Jill Rose (770-3130073). You will be added to our telephone message list which goes out the night before each match and you will be able to see who has signed up to play for that day. This will also let you know if there are at least 4 people available for that day. Please come join the fun with us.
TENNIS PRIVATE PLAY is always encouraged; to help, we provide a roster of the known players who live in Lake Arrowhead. This is kept within the tennis community and not shared outside Lake Arrowhead - contact Maury Nunes at 770.720.5003 or man.apc@ outlook.com. To check to see if a court is available, you may contact Membership at membership@lakearrowheadga.com or phone 770.721.7912
ALTA TEAM PLAY is based out of BridgeMill as Lake Arrowhead is outside the ALTA boundaries. Call 770.720.9635 or email pat. perry@hmsgolf.com.
PICKLEBALL
If you love to play Pickleball or would like to learn, please read on. We have an active group of players at multiple levels, and play times for each group are listed below. We play at the Red Cloud Pickleball and Tennis Center near the Red Cloud Pool. The only requirement is that you are a Lake Arrowhead resident or registered guest.
If you are new to Pickleball or want to play for fun and exercise, please join our Recreational Group. The intermediate and advanced groups are for experienced players who want to advance their skills to compete in leagues and/or tournaments.
All Pickleball courts are considered RESERVED during these group play times:
RECREATIONAL: Mon/Wed/Fri at 9:00am and Saturday at 10:00 am Starting Nov 1: Mon/Wed/Fri and Saturday at 10:00am
INTERMEDIATE: Mon/Wed at 4:30pm and Saturday at 8:00am Starting Nov 1: Mon/Wed at 3:00pm and Saturday at 1:00pm
ADVANCED: Tues/Thurs and Sunday at 4:00pm
Starting Nov 1: Tues/Thurs and Sunday at 3:00pm
PLEASE READ: We want everyone to enjoy Pickleball and understand that play on the LA courts is ‘’at your own risk.” Players should come in athletic attire, wear court shoes (pickleball or tennis shoes) and bring a PB paddle, sunglasses/protective eyewear, visors and/or hats. Players should be aware that like any sport, warming up, having the proper gear, bringing water, towels, and stretching afterwards are all important components of a successful, injury free experience.
For more information or to be added to our weekly email list, please email:
