2024 MEMBER – MEMBER
On July 27th and 28th , 48 Lake Arrowhead golf members played in the 2024 Member – Member Golf Tournament. Always competitive, this year’s tournament was no exception. Mike Stein and Todd Roberts won the low gross score honors! Sean Webb and Jeff Howell won the overall low net score.
The Member – Member Golf Tournament is an annual event where golf club members form 2-person teams to compete for trophies and prizes plus the honor of being named Tournament Champions for the year. The tournament format is known by several names (four ball, best ball, and better ball) but whatever it is called, it essentially requires each team member to play their own ball. At the end of each hole, the lowest individual score is recorded as the team score. This year’s tournament was divided into 4 flights: First, Second, Third and Womens. The winners were:
1st Flight
1st Place Gross – Mike Stein and Todd Roberts
2nd Place Gross – Brian Schell and Jeff Bedard
1st Place Net – Sean Webb and Jeff Howell

2024 BRIMMER HIGHLANDS CUP
The Brimmer Highlands Cup is an event dreamed up by Ward Brimmer and a few other golfers 16 years ago to spice up Lake Arrowhead’s golfing experience through some good-natured competition among Golf Club members. Two golf members have participated in all 16 events, Sandy Reynolds and Rick Salese. Modeled after the Ryder Cup between U.S. and European golf professionals, the Brimmer Highlands Cup has two captains who are responsible for selecting team members, setting tournament rules, and working with Golf Club management on Tournament details. This year the Red Team Co-Captains were Jeff Ciupak and Ralph Lumpkin. The Blue Team Captain was Mel Standley and his Co-Caption was Lee Heubner. Each team included 18 members.
Matches on the first day of competition were played by 2-person teams in three different formats – best ball, scramble, and alternate shot. The Blue Team ended the first day of competition with a 14.5 -12.5 lead. Second day matches were a shamble on the front 9 and singles on the back 9. The Red Team pulled to within a point at the end of the front 9. The front 9 ended with the Blue Team ahead 18.5 – 17.5. The Blue team pulled away on the back 9 winning 12 of 18 possible points. The final results were Blue 30.5 and Red 23.5
In what was a very competitive event, the Blue Team earned bragging rights for the ninth year in a row! Special thanks to all the staff in the Pro Shop and The Highlands Grill for all they did to help make the Highlands Cup a successful and fun event.

RED WHITE AND BLUE
Some focus on what separates us. However, I like to focus on what brings us together. For LGA I think golf brings us together for play days, group events or just getting together with friends for a round, but, on July 18th we were brought together for the Red, White and Blue.
All the players were proud to focus on and represent the Red, White and Blue in our patriotic outfits. As Lee Greenwood wrote in his now famous song. “I’m proud to be an American. God Bless the USA!”
With summer heat peaking and rain forecasted, only 11 ladies signed up for the 2 person 9 hole scramble. Alongside my partner Patti Adams, VP Natalie Teuton heroically played the 2 person scramble as a single player with a second shot with each stroke. Patti and I were in awe of her play and would have almost always been happy with either of her shots.
With so few players we were back at the Clubhouse for an early lunch, which was preordered and ready. Grace Kreft continues to wow us with themed decorations. Natalie debuted a LGA-Reserved sign for our events and play days.
Drum roll as winners are announced! Natalie and the phantom Natalie would have come in 1st place with a low score of 43 but she magnanimously chose to forfeit her win. Therefore, 1st place went to Debbie Switalski and Deb
O’Sullivan and 2nd place to Sarah Jones Bentley and Grace Kreft. Congratulations ladies.
Since the July 4th fell on the first July Thursday, our July Cat Fight was postponed to July 11th. Eight ladies participated, each needing to acquire a customized points threshold, based on handicap and previous Cat Fight scores. I needed 17 points and miraculously scored 19. That gave me the win! Karen Helm scored second at even. Since improvement is a slow process requiring time, dedication and maybe a few lessons, another first place for me is unlikely this season as my points threshold will rise for the next Cat Fight.
Though turnout at LGA events was depressed with weather, vacations, etc., but we were well represented in Golf events with 12 LGA members in the Red, White and Blue club tournament and 8 playing in the Member-Member tourney.
Writing this article, I see the season more than half over and at publication it will be near an end. I continue to be amazed that our President Arra Bolding and VP Natalie Teuton continue to make improvements every time we play! This month they furnished menu printouts so we could preorder food. Natalie provided our LGA sign. They’ve worked with Uel, Rosa and others so carts are ready with names on the carts. Tee times and playing partners are advised a day in advance. We even sign up on Golf Genius. Thanks to Arra, Natalie and everyone at the Clubhouse and Pro Shop who worked with the LGA to make improvements.

READING FOR THE AGES
by Jeanne Schwartz
Untamed: The Wildest Woman in America and the Fight for Cumberland Island
Will Harlan | Little, Brown and Company
“Carol Ruckeshal is the wildest woman in America. She eats roadkill, wrestles alligators, and dissects dead sea turtles that wash ashore. She lives on a wilderness island in a ramshackle cabin that she built herself, and she eats mostly what she hunts, gathers, and grows. She is a hard-drinking, gun-toting, modern-day Thoreau who is even more outspoken in protecting her Walden-esque island.” And, likely, you’ve never heard of her.
“Untamed” is her story, written by an accomplished biographer, and well worth the read. She lives on Cumberland Island, one of the beautiful barrier islands of Georgia, although she has spent time in other parts of the state, including on the Chattahoochee River, which she traversed with her friend, President Jimmy Carter.
Today, Cumberland Island is open for visitors and camping, but the amount of the island allocated for visitors is restricted, and very different agendas are put forth by Carol and by the Carnegie and Rockefeller families, who own and occupy much of the island.
Carol is passionate about protecting the wildlife of Cumberland. Tourists see the wild horses that roam the island. Carol rides them. Tourists mostly don’t see the hundreds of dead sea turtles that wash ashore. But Carol sees them all, performing necropsies to determine the cause of death. Her research led to her collaboration on the invention of the Turtle Excluder Device, commonly called TEDs. These devices are made of metal bars and mesh that fit inside the neck of a trawl net. While shrimp pass between the bars to the back of the net, turtles and other larger animals bump against the metal grid and escape through a flap in the mesh. TED Devices are one of the most prominent and effective ways to protect turtles from the commercial fishing operations along Georgia’s coast.
The differences between the monied-class and Carol could not be more stark. The Rockefeller, Vanderbilt, Goodyear, Morgan and Pulitzer families, for example, formed the country’s most exclusive organization: the Jekyll Island Clubanother of Georgia’s gorgeous barrier islands. The Carnegies and Rockefellers set their sights on Cumberland.
“Untamed” reports on the differences - or conflicts - between the Carnegies and Carol, but the majority of the book deals with her life on the island as a solitary, live-off- the-land woman, whose sole purpose was to protect the island’s wildlife. She sought to understand the threats first, which accounted for the thousands of necropsies on the dead turtles she found, but also contributed to the creation
of satellite tags, which enable researchers to follow sea turtles after they leave the beach.
Amazingly, turtle hatchlings, whose body is the weight of a triple-A battery, embark on a journey crossing one-third of the planet, and return to nest on the same beaches where they were born, even after traveling thousands of miles across the Atlantic, a thirty-year journey along the jet stream. (Reviewer note: We bought our grand-daughter a bracelet with a tracker, for “her” turtle, Lady Jane, and she checks on her periodically to follow her journeys).
Carol did not shy away from any creature she encountered, and sought to understand the biology and cause of death for all of them. When most deaths proved to be man-made, she overcame her natural rectitude and put herself out as a spokesperson and advocate for the creatures of Cumberland Island, seeking to have it designated as a wildlife sanctuary. A series of work-arounds and negotiations permeated Carol’s life, complicating her mission. While not “at war” with her neighbors, there were definitely differences of opinion, style and actions. Despite the constant provocations, in 1979 Carol took advantage of a National Park Service offering, and sold her “wobbly shack” that she had purchased in 1978 for $36,000 for $45,000, the lowest price of any park acquisition. But it made Cumberland her lifetime home.
Along with 20 other life-time right holders, including 16 Carnegie and Candler families. The ”feud” continues to this day, with the north end of the island claimed and developed by the Carnegie family, and the south end mostly protected wild lands. Only one ferry is allowed to take tourists back and forth, and the dunes and wildlife are protected as much as possible. For a great read about an amazing woman, a natural wonder of Georgia, and the eco-system of our planet, I highly recommend this book.
Ferries leave twice daily from St. Mary’s Georgia, with schedules differing partially according to the season. Usually, there are two departures to the island in the morning and two returning in the afternoon. There is no place to purchase anything on the island. Bring water bottles to be re-filled at stations throughout the island, and pack out whatever you pack in. This goes for campers as well. Enjoy your visit to Cumberland Island!
