LAKE

ARROWHEAD TRIVIA #111 June 27, 2024 – Morris A. Nunes, TriviaMaster

N.B. Lake Arrowhead Trivia utilizes a mnemonic with the 1st letter of each of the 25 answers (or phrase 1 st substantive word (e.g. book title) or last name if a person) in order, spell a message. Figuring out the mnemonic yields no extra credit, but can be a valuable hint for questions that might stump you.

MNEMONIC HAS 6 WORDS:

1ST WORD: 4 LETTERS:

1. Georgia: Who is the current Lieutenant Governor of Georgia?

2. Anatomy: What is the clinical medical term for a belly button?

3. Military History: In World War I’s trench warfare, what term came to be used to describe the land between opposing forces?

4. Entertainment: Perhaps the supreme achievement in the performing arts is being an EGOT winner. For what does the acronym EGOT stand?

2ND WORD: A NUMBER [Not Spelled Out; e.g. 9]:

5. Geography: How many Counties currently make up the Province of Northern Ireland in the United Kingdom? [Answer should be expressed in digital form to count as one of the six mnemonic words.]

3RD WORD: 4 LETTERS:

6. Fashion: What is another name for a Bowler Hat?

7. Movies: What was the first publicly released James Bond film?

8. Baseball: In the 1961 Major League Baseball season’s 162 games, Roger Maris hit 61 Home Runs, a new single season record and one more than Babe Ruth’s 60 homers in the 1927 baseball season, but the 1927 season had only 154 games. What did Commissioner Ford Frick demand be put in the official record books for Maris’s record as Maris had an advantage of 8 extra games to beat Ruth’s records?

9. Sociology: To what demographic group does the term YUPPIE refer?

4TH WORD: 5 LETTERS:

10. Alcohol: Sambuca is the Italian form of what alcoholic drink?

11. Mythology: Who was the Roman Goddess of Flowers?

12. Archeology: Who was the ancient royal Egyptian whose tomb was discovered in 1922 and remains the only Egyptian tomb of royalty found to date in near intact condition?

13. Television: What was the name of the Clampett daughter on the Beverly Hillbillies, played by Donna Douglas?

14. Celebrities: Who was the popular Soul Singer who died in a plane crash, shortly before his only #1 hit, Sitting on the Dock of the Bay, was released?

5TH WORD: 6 LETTERS:

15. Shakespeare: In the play, Julius Caesar, what 3-word Latin phrase became famous as a saying of betrayal, that Caesar exclaims during the assassination scene, upon seeing a close friend as an assassin? [Mnemonic uses the Latin; credit for the Latin or proper English.]

16. Basketball: Caitlin Clark, the female collegiate basketball sensation, who broke Pete Maravich’s all-time collegiate scoring record this past season, joined which professional WNBA Team upon graduation from College?

READING FOR THE AGES

The Hotel Nantucket | Elin Hilderbrand | Little, Brown and Company

Your beach read installment this summer is The Hotel Nantucket, by perennial summertime author Elin Hilderbrand. Hilderbrand likes to write about Nantucket because, well, she loves Nantucket.

This is the story of Lizbet Keaton, formerly the head of front of the house at The Deck, were she worked with her boyfriend JJ until she discovered more than 100 texts between him and their wine rep. Furious, she leaves the rose’ fountain she invented in the dust, and heads over to a new opportunity to manage the renaissance of an old hotel abandoned years ago after a fire and the supposed presence of a ghost who inhabits the fourth-floor storage closet.

A British millionaire, Xavier Darling, has purchased the hotel for thirty million dollars, and renovated it to within an inch of its life to impress two women: Shelly Carpenter, Instagram influencer and author of Hotel Confidential, and someone who is not revealed. Darling’s goal is to earn a “5 key review” from Shelly Carpenter, something she has never once awarded to a hotel. Never.

So Darling pulls out all the stops, with custom emperor-size beds, hydrangea blue cashmere blankets, complimentary mini-bars stocked with beer, wine, spirits, smoked bluefish pate’ and crackers, and the Blue Bar, a restaurant conceived and run by celebrity chef Mario Subiaco. Lizbet contributes by painstakingly writing “The Blue Book,” a guide to all things Nantucket that she hands out to each guest to make their vacation just what they like.

The hotel’s décor, setting, and amenities couldn’t be more perfect, but the staff leaves something to be desired. Lizbet hires two front desk staff: sweet Edie and conniving Alessandra, bell boys Zeke and a married couple, Adam and Raoul Wasserman-Ramierez, (who should be “scheduled separately” according to their job references), housekeeping manager Magda English, and two maids, young Bibi, who covets the guests’ belongings, and Chad, a spoiled rich boy who seeks out the job trying to atone for “something” and avoid his father, who expects Chad to work at his financial firm when the summer season is over. The staff is rounded out by night manager Richie, who takes the job primarily to stop sleeping in his car on the beach at night. (Yes, you can drive and park on the beach in Nantucket).

Oh, and in fact there is a ghost. Grace has been hanging around for 100 years after dying in the fire that closed the

hotel, and she is delighted to have people to haunt, although most of her antics are harmless and curiously kind.

On opening day, inexperienced Edie is approached by a woman with two children and a pit bull who a) requests an upgrade to a suite at no additional expense, b) wants to stay all summer, c) has no credit card and wants to pay in cash, and d) well, the pit bull. Edie has heard from Xavier Darling that pleasing the guests is paramount, and with Lizbet occupied elsewhere, Edie grants the request. Kimber Marsh does offer to pay in advance each week, which is small consolation to Lizbet when she returns to find a family in residence in one of the huge suites.

Each week during the summer, Xavier Darling has promised to award a $1,000 bonus to the employee who best exemplifies the level of service he is expecting. Edie does not get the bonus for checking in the Marsh family, although she has made them very happy.

So, with the stage set, the summer unfolds. The staff, led by Lizbet, works hard, and each of them brings talents and secrets to the hotel. But really, who is that “someone” that Xavier wants to make happy? And will Shelly Carpenter even show up, let alone grant the new hotel a 5 key review?

The staff reads the Friday Hotel Confidential every week, and reviews appear, but none with five keys and none of the Hotel Nantucket.

This is a fun read and the sumptuous details about the hotel and the food are sure to put you in mind of a summer vacation. And lucky for you, the last chapter in the book is called The Blue Book, and for 40 pages you can read about all things Nantucket that Elin Hilderbrand loves. The Hotel Nantucket itself is based on The Nantucket Hotel and Resort, located at 77 Easton Street. Hilderbrand provides information on hotels, restaurants, beaches, shops, art galleries – everything for a perfect trip to AUK, which is the airport code for Nantucket. (Nantucket is accessible only by boat or plane). She includes websites and Instagram pages for everything she reviews so that you can travel vicariously until your time rolls around for a trip. Enjoy!

Elin Hilderbrand is the author of 28 novels. She graduated from Johns Hopkins University and attended the University of Iowa’s writers workshop where she earned her MFA in 1998. She has lived in Nantucket permanently since 1994, and will publish one more book this summer, after which she will retire. So… almost last chance!
