LGA APRIL 2024

Golf, like many sports, is always a lot of fun, challenging, though somewhat predictable; …and occasionally lucky… or unlucky!

So when bad weather was predicted those of us who had signed up for the first Cat Fight of the season didn’t think it would be much fun to play in the predicted bad weather. Just bad luck to have a cold, windy, rainy day for our first event of the Season.

However, we were much luckier for our first of the season 9 -hole Scramble. The day before the Scramble was scheduled, true to prediction, there was bad weather, so the Scramble was to be played in cart-path-only mode.

But then, luckily, the course dried out enough that play was revised to the 90-degree rule, so it was not quite as much of a physical challenge. With the improved course conditions, 16 ladies including 4 new LALGA members

joined in the fun for the 2-person scramble. One thing that is consistently predictable with LALGA events is that all participants , hungry for lunch and ready to hear who the lucky winners are, end up back in the Clubhouse Grill, welcomed with tables decorated by Grace Kreft.

Since some golf days are not as challenging as others and some days you just have better luck, you can never predict with certainty who the winners will be. This time, Paula Hall and Heather Gass went home with the prize money and the honor of coming in first place.

So, if you are up for the challenge, come out and join us, whether you feel lucky on not. I can predict you’ll have a lot of fun. As the great Pro, Gary Player, once said, “The more I practice, the luckier I get.”

L.A. PICKLEBALLERS TAKE GOLD AT U.S. PICKLEBALL OPEN by

Summer is coming and pickleball is heating up in Lake Arrowhead. Players fill our local courts at all levels of play through the week and the quality of play is exhilarating. Many of our LA players are active in the local and national tournament scene, collecting a bounty of medals in the process. Congratulations to a few of our medal winners this past year: Bill and Carol Hess, Guy Wynn, Andrew Gross, Eric Chatham, Kathy Belinski, Jim Winchester, Joe and Lisa Nicolette, Scott and Patty Spielman.

At the largest Pickleball Championship in the nation to date, Lake Arrowhead residents, Joe Nicolette and Scott Spielman, earned first place in the 3.5 Men’s Amateur Doubles Division in Naples, Florida. These are the same two fellows who won Silver at the U.S. Nationals in November, ’22 as reported in a previous Magazine issue. Gold this time was quite an achievement, as the official U.S. Open website listed this national event as “The largest and most prestigious pickleball tournament in the world. The 2024 Minto US OPEN Pickleball Championships...awarded medals in over 260 events to players of all ages and skill levels. Over 3,200 players including 460 professionals from all 50 states and 31 countries competed in more than 5,000 matches …from April 13-20, in Naples,”

This tournament was unusual, as entry was by lottery; Joe and Scott received the only invitations for LA players. Play format was a traditional bracket, so to win gold every match had to be won. For Joe and Scott that meant prevailing in eight consecutive 2-of-3-games matches. To win a game requires a 2-point margin with at least 11 points. Twice they claimed the match’s first game, only to lose the second, requiring a third game playoff, in each of which they fought through to victory. Some games were comeback wins, from as much as 5 points behind.

Dramatically, in the heat of the South Florida sun, Scott and Joe played for the gold medal after 7 match triumphs. Like some of their prior matches, the first two games split (11-9, 7-11), but after the second game loss, the LA Duo regrouped, devised a new more aggressive strategy and swooped to a decisive 11-4 conquest in the rubber game.

Both players attribute their success in no small part to the regular competition on the Lake Arrowhead Courts. This national victory at a weeklong event that boasted roughly 50,000 spectators, is perhaps the most prestigious so far. While all these medal achievements are notable, the key fact is that the pickleballers are all recreational athletes, who treasure the thrill of play because they play hard and play fun. Laughter is the common element heard at the Red Cloud courts and camaraderie the common thread. If you're even a little interested, check it out. (We’re hoping you’ve already received your directory by the time you read this!)

In the past the books were mailed to “Resident” at all addresses receiving their mail in Lake Arrowhead. However……the envelopes were plain white with no information as to the contents. As a result, many were simply thrown unopened into the trash. We hope to avert that action this year by requesting that the publisher put a line of text on the envelope indicating what’s inside. They have agreed to do so. So be watching for your directory to arrive in your mailbox. We hope you will enjoy your new directory!

READING FOR THE AGES

The Hotel Nantucket | Elin Hilderbrand | Little, Brown and Company

Your beach read installment this summer is The Hotel Nantucket, by perennial summertime author Elin Hilderbrand. Hilderbrand likes to write about Nantucket because, well, she loves Nantucket.

This is the story of Lizbet Keaton, formerly the head of front of the house at The Deck, were she worked with her boyfriend JJ until she discovered more than 100 texts between him and their wine rep. Furious, she leaves the rose’ fountain she invented in the dust, and heads over to a new opportunity to manage the renaissance of an old hotel abandoned years ago after a fire and the supposed presence of a ghost who inhabits the fourth-floor storage closet.

A British millionaire, Xavier Darling, has purchased the hotel for thirty million dollars, and renovated it to within an inch of its life to impress two women: Shelly Carpenter, Instagram influencer and author of Hotel Confidential, and someone who is not revealed. Darling’s goal is to earn a “5 key review” from Shelly Carpenter, something she has never once awarded to a hotel. Never.

So Darling pulls out all the stops, with custom emperor-size beds, hydrangea blue cashmere blankets, complimentary mini-bars stocked with beer, wine, spirits, smoked bluefish pate’ and crackers, and the Blue Bar, a restaurant conceived and run by celebrity chef Mario Subiaco. Lizbet contributes by painstakingly writing “The Blue Book,” a guide to all things Nantucket that she hands out to each guest to make their vacation just what they like.

The hotel’s décor, setting, and amenities couldn’t be more perfect, but the staff leaves something to be desired. Lizbet hires two front desk staff: sweet Edie and conniving Alessandra, bell boys Zeke and a married couple, Adam and Raoul Wasserman-Ramierez, (who should be “scheduled separately” according to their job references), housekeeping manager Magda English, and two maids, young Bibi, who covets the guests’ belongings, and Chad, a spoiled rich boy who seeks out the job trying to atone for “something” and avoid his father, who expects Chad to work at his financial firm when the summer season is over. The staff is rounded out by night manager Richie, who takes the job primarily to stop sleeping in his car on the beach at night. (Yes, you can drive and park on the beach in Nantucket).

Oh, and in fact there is a ghost. Grace has been hanging around for 100 years after dying in the fire that closed the

hotel, and she is delighted to have people to haunt, although most of her antics are harmless and curiously kind.

On opening day, inexperienced Edie is approached by a woman with two children and a pit bull who a) requests an upgrade to a suite at no additional expense, b) wants to stay all summer, c) has no credit card and wants to pay in cash, and d) well, the pit bull. Edie has heard from Xavier Darling that pleasing the guests is paramount, and with Lizbet occupied elsewhere, Edie grants the request. Kimber Marsh does offer to pay in advance each week, which is small consolation to Lizbet when she returns to find a family in residence in one of the huge suites.

Each week during the summer, Xavier Darling has promised to award a $1,000 bonus to the employee who best exemplifies the level of service he is expecting. Edie does not get the bonus for checking in the Marsh family, although she has made them very happy.

So, with the stage set, the summer unfolds. The staff, led by Lizbet, works hard, and each of them brings talents and secrets to the hotel. But really, who is that “someone” that Xavier wants to make happy? And will Shelly Carpenter even show up, let alone grant the new hotel a 5 key review?

The staff reads the Friday Hotel Confidential every week, and reviews appear, but none with five keys and none of the Hotel Nantucket.

This is a fun read and the sumptuous details about the hotel and the food are sure to put you in mind of a summer vacation. And lucky for you, the last chapter in the book is called The Blue Book, and for 40 pages you can read about all things Nantucket that Elin Hilderbrand loves. The Hotel Nantucket itself is based on The Nantucket Hotel and Resort, located at 77 Easton Street. Hilderbrand provides information on hotels, restaurants, beaches, shops, art galleries – everything for a perfect trip to AUK, which is the airport code for Nantucket. (Nantucket is accessible only by boat or plane). She includes websites and Instagram pages for everything she reviews so that you can travel vicariously until your time rolls around for a trip. Enjoy!

Elin Hilderbrand is the author of 28 novels. She graduated from Johns Hopkins University and attended the University of Iowa’s writers workshop where she earned her MFA in 1998. She has lived in Nantucket permanently since 1994, and will publish one more book this summer, after which she will retire. So… almost last chance!
