VOTE DOUDS for Chief Magistrate Judge in the Republican Primary
May 21 will be the last day to vote in the only contested County-level race.
Greg Douds has been your Chief Associate Magistrate Judge for more than 15 years. During that time he has returned budget surpluses to the taxpayers every single year.
He recently negotiated a major upgrade to the County’s electronic warrant system. That system saved taxpayers more than $1.3 million in 2023 alone ; the upgrade promises even more savings. It pays for itself in less than two weeks of use each year.
Greg Douds has almost 30 years of experience as a lawyer, and 40 years of experience as a CPA and businessman. Learn more at www.GregDouds.com.

2024 ST. PATRICK’S DAY TOURNAMENT
44 golfers braved wet conditions to play in the most unique tournament format of the year. The 4-person scramble format is very common but we add a twist to this event. Each player can only use 4 clubs! The partners cannot share clubs. This added a touch of difficulty and fun as each golfer had to decide which clubs to use and how best to maneuver around the course. For example, most golfers used a putter as one of their four clubs while a few others decided to leave their putter at home and used a driver or other club to putt.
The field was divided into two flights and awarded Pro Shop gift certificates to the top three teams in each flight. Using this process, the winners with the overall lowest score were Pat Farrelly, Dennis Bush, Mel Standley, and Lee Heubner
First Flight:
1st Place – Pat Farrelly, Dennis Bush, Lee Heubner, Mel Standley
2nd Place – Larry Adams, Jonathan Finley, Mike Stein, Rex Wallace
3rd Place – Steve Hopson, Keith Mangum, Rick Salese, Bruce Thomas
Second Flight:
1st Place – Tim Gallagher, George Jackson, Sandy Reynolds, Jerry Rushing
2nd Place – Eleanor Gibbons, Scott Hall, Paula Hall, Greg Harback
3rd Place – Herb Ernst, Keith Gervickas, Brad Jones, Jim Lindenmayer
LGA 2024 UPCOMING SEASON
By the time this article is in print, the LGA 2024 season would already be underway. But have no fear or regrets; there is still time to join and plenty of golf to play!
You may ask, “Why join?” I once asked myself that same question and now I have the answers.
Let’s start with the friendships I’ve made. I joined the LGA just over 10 years ago, having just moved to Georgia and knowing very few people. But guess what? I have made wonderful friends through LGA participation.
What’s better than golfing with friends?!? When I started with the LGA I had only played golf a handful of times. I took some lessons, swallowed my pride and hit the course with the LGA. They were supportive, encouraging and kind. In fact, they still are. Face it, it’s golf, so very few of us have a great shot from every swing. I continue to learn something from the group, just about every time I play. And the more I play, the better I seem to get.
Now, if you’re interested in joining, here’s how to proceed. If you want to give the LGA “a try” you can come out and join us on Monday afternoons or Thursday mornings. However, if you want the opportunity to play in our Events, you need to join the LGA for just $40 for the season which is from April thru October.
These are the Events:
The first Thursday of the month there is an eighteen hole Catfight. A Catfight is handicapped based so the playing field is leveled. Handicaps are encouraged but not necessary.
The Third Thursday events are a nine hole themed scramble usually with a twist, such as play every other shot after the drive. Here are a few of the themes that our events chairs Grace Kreft and Mindy McCutcheon have planned. Pearls for Par Party, Hats on for Women’s Golf and Stars Spangle Banner Parade. Some players go all out with costumes and cart decorations, while others just show up to play.
All of the events are a five dollar buy in and regular golf rates apply. The first, second and sometimes third teams (depending on the number of teams) share the prize money.
Still unsure and want more info? You can
• Take a look at our webpage administered by Natalie Teuton which is lakearrowheadladiesgolfassociation.net. Under the About Icon is the contact information for the LGA Board. All of us are glad to fill you in.
• Follow us on the Lake Arrowhead Ladies Golf Association Facebook page which is maintained by Cynthia Samuels.
• Call the Pro Shop at 770-721-7902 and ask to play with the LGA ladies group on Monday evenings or Thursday mornings. In fact, when you call the Pro shop chances are you will reach a member of the LGA. Martha Elkins, Cindy Boleman, Christy Stewart and Tricia Blanco all members of the LGA work in the Pro Shop.
• In addition, there will also be a not-to-be-missed resident welcoming event at The Highlands Grill May 22 at 6PM where LGA President Arra Bolding and Vice President Natalie Teuton will be on hand to provide information you may want.
I look forward to meeting you and even pairing up with you for some of our Events or Play Days! See you on the beautiful Highlands Course.

READING FOR THE AGES
by Jeanne SchwartzAbout Grace | Anthony Doerr | Scribner
People are probably most familiar with Anthony Doerr from his book or the limited series All The Light We Cannot See. About Grace is his first book, and bears little similarity to his better-known work, except in the themes of uncertainty, isolation, and fear for what the future may hold.
About Grace is atmospheric. The silent weight and beauty of snow serve as part of the background of water that flows throughout the story. David Winkler is a hydrologist in Alaska, whose profession it is to study water in all its forms. He is most intrigued by the formation of snow crystals, and there are heavy scenes of snow pressing down and amplifying his isolation.
Winkler is inhabited not only by science and its miraculous manifestations, but also by metaphysical phenomenon. His dreams sometimes come true, and he lives in anticipation of events that actually end up happening, and dread of those that might. It was as if “the imminent could not wait to become the past, or the present lunged at the future, eager for what would be. Here most of all the word failed: These were dreams deeper than remembering. These dreams were knowing.”
The book opens with him on a plane, 59 years old, heading to Cleveland in search of his wife Sandy and daughter Grace. He has spent the last 25 years in exile, on a the remote Carribbean Grenadine island of St. Vincent, working in the warm water of the island to construct someone else’s idea of a resort - that features a plexiglass floor where guests can observe the fish below while dining. How he ends up here, why he goes home and what happens after is driven exclusively by events that might or might not have actually materialized.
Winkler meets his wife Sandy after a dream foretold their meeting in an Alaskan store. His previous dreams had included one where he saw a man being hit by a bus after pursuing a hatbox that had blown out of his grasp, only to watch it come true days later. So when he sees the woman rifling through the magazine rack, exactly as he dreamed it, he is convinced that Sandy is his destiny. She is married, but the dream was specific that they would become lovers, so he pursues her through the bank where her husband works and ends up convincing her to run away with him to Cleveland, OH, the only place that has offered him a position that would be outside of Alaska.
They have a baby girl, Grace, and David’s dreams turn almost entirely to her. “He dreamed her fist would close around his thumb, he dreamed she would balance herself against the edge of the coffee table and take her first, tottering steps.”
But then, one night when she was five months old, he dreamed of a flood: he dreamed he found Grace on the top of a plant stand in the house slowly filling with water. He dreamed he grabbed her, held her tight to his chest and entered the rushing water in the streets. He dreamed he went under, tried to hold her above his head, lost her.
Sure enough, the rain came. The waters rose. And Winkler fled. He ran as far away as he could, hoping that if he could avoid being in the flood, that Grace would avoid being drowned. His reason for being became keeping Grace safe; his only way to do that was to keep far away from her to make sure he did not become responsible for her death.
So he ran halfway across the world. To St. Vincent. Where as he slept on the sand and entered a new phase of his life, he mused that he might after all be dead. “What is death, after all, but a cessation of involvement with the world, a departure from those you love, and those who love you?”
And so began the next chapter in his life – one that would last 25 years. And then yet another chapter, in another place. The one constant in David Winkler’s life was water. In the form of snow, floods, study, reporting, warm ocean waves; “water was a wild, capricious substance: nothing solid, nothing permanent, nothing as it appeared.”
This is not a beach read.
Pre-cognitive dreams, as they are called, are a rare experience, but there have been documented cases that are hard to dismiss. For example, the American author Mark Twain dreamed about his brother’s body lying in a metal coffin in his sister’s house. A few weeks after his dream, his brother was killed. Back then, the standard was to be buried in a wooden coffin But a friend had paid for Twain’s brother to be buried in style – in a metal coffin. Twain saw the scene exactly as he’d seen it in his dream.
