2024 SUPER BOWL SCRAMBLE On February 3, Dennis Bush, Bill Maynard, Mark Edwards, and Jeff Howell won this year’s Super Bowl Scramble. The team won with a score of 97 points! While a typical 4-person scramble golf tournament, scoring for this event was based on a football analogy. For example, a bogey (safety) was worth negative 2 points, a par (field goal) was worth 3 points, a birdie (touchdown) was worth 6 points, and an eagle (touchdown and 2-point conversion) was worth 8 points. In addition, a team could earn one or two extra points for each birdie by sinking either a short or long putt. Using this format, the winning team scored 97 points. Overall, 20 teams (80 golfers) competed in the tournament. The Club awarded prizes to the first 2 teams in 4 flights. Each 1st Flight winning team member received a football trophy and pro-shop gift certificate. Other winners received pro-shop gift certificates.

First Flight: 1st Place: Dennis Bush, Jeff Howell, Mark Edwards, and Bill Maynard (97 points) 2nd Place: Pat Farrelly, Mel Standley, Lee Heubner, and Jeff Ciupak (93 points) Second Flight: 1st Place: Mike Stein, Bruce Thomas, Larry Adams, and Rex Wallace (82 points) 2nd Place: Steve Hopson, Todd Roberts, Keith Mangum, and Rick Salese (77 points) Third Flight: 1st Place: Mark Banister, Brian Cook, Jeff Cowart, and Matt Smith (62 points) 2nd Place: Bob Gusick, Jeff Schwartz, Dave Davis, and Donald Gaspard (60 points) Fourth Flight: 1st Place: Brad Jones, Herb Ernst, Larry Whiting, and Ron Travis (39 points) 2nd Place: Natalie Teuton, Evie Lewis, and Val Smith (36 points)

golf news

VICARIOUS WINTER GOLF Since the last of the LPGA founders Marlene Bauer Hagge passed away in May of 2023 I thought I would resubmit this article to hopefully inspire at least a few of you to learn about the history of ladies golf. Generally, during the winter months in Georgia, there are days when the weather is balmy enough to get out and play golf. Unfortunately, there are also plenty of days, maybe even weeks when the weather is just too chilly to play or, even worse. you have already made plans for the one really nice day that week. A few of us are lucky enough to escape to a warmer weather climate now and then or even on a regular basis to continue playing. But most of us are at home in Lake Arrowhead hoping for a heat wave. So, if you lack the ambition to regularly do exercises to improve your game, or don’t have an in-home putting surface, or lack a golf video game, or the ultimate, your own golf simulator, I suggest escaping vicariously by watching golf movies. Yes, you may learn something. The movies may teach something about sportsmanship, honesty, patience or endurance. [Warning: Try not to concentrate too much on the pranks or practical jokes, but go ahead, have a laugh and enjoy the film.]

Grand Slam of golf. [Watch this flick, grab your winter gear and head to the driving range for practice.]

Many of us have movie options beyond basic cable, such as On-Demand, Netflix, FireStick and other types of streaming, so more options are now available. Google golf movies, and take your pick. Here are a few I found entertaining as I escape the onset of Winter blues.

Speaking of determination, The Greatest Game Ever Played should be next on your list. Another film based on a true story tells the tale of a young English lad who pursues golf greatness against class discrimination and a challenging home life. An inspiring story, the lead proves a true winner against all odds. [Keep practicing even if you need to just use your putter on the carpet.]

Perhaps not my favorite movie, but I might as well start locally with Bobby Jones- Stroke of Genius. As many of us know Bobby Jones’s grandfather was a Canton resident. Bobby’s Dad was an Atlanta lawyer and member of The East Lake Country Club. It was at East Lake that Bobby taught himself golf. The movie tells the story of his competitive spirit, talent and determination that enabled him to win the

Another “feel good” inspirational movie built around local legend Bobby Jones is The Legend of Bagger Vance. Set in the 1920’s in post-WWI Georgia (but filmed in South Carolina) there are many valuable lessons within this movie that may not only apply to golf but perhaps also to life. continued on next page page 11

golf news [Watch it and see if you spot something you can use in your game. Write down a reminder!]. On a much lighter note there are all the “shenanigans” of Caddy Shack, well known for its all-star cast and the crazy antics that happen at the supposedly elite country club. It was actually filmed in Davie, FL, not far from my childhood home, at a semi-private course open to the public. Although this is a comedy, with no shortage of slapstick, you are still able to see the many challenges the greens keepers have, not just with the wild life but with the wild players. [Keep this in mind next time you are on the course. And thank the Lake Arrowhead maintenance crew if you see them out on the course.] I was a bit surprised at how very many golf movies are out there. You could literally spend several hours every day all Winter watching these golf movies. However, I suggest everyone should see The Founders. This motion picture is a superb documentary about the thirteen ladies who founded the Ladies Professional Golf Association. It has a lot of interesting historical footage about the ladies who overcame many obstacles to make ladies golf a professional sport. Many of them were alive in 2016 when the film was made and were interviewed for the movie. So put on your fuzzy lounge wear, grab some popcorn and enjoy the show!

community interest READING FOR THE AGES by Jeanne Schwartz Next Year in Havana | Chanel Cleeton | Berkley | New York Next Year in Havana is a title that begs a question. What will the next year in Havana bring? Sudden romance, secrets, subterfuge? Most likely all of these, and most assuredly danger. The story takes place in two timelines, starting in 1959, the year that Fidel Castro and his revolutionary forces overthrew Batista’s regime. Elisa Perez, the 19-year old daughter of sugar barons in Cuba is facing a journey to the United States with her family. She and her three sisters, along with their parents, are trying to escape being made an example of by Castro – for their wealth, power, and relationship with Batista. But Elisa is pregnant with the child of Pablo Garcia, a rebel who is on the side of Fidel Castro. Her path to exile in Miami began one night in 1958 after she went to a party and met Pablo, where they began a whirlwind romance. After the Perez’s return to Miami, Elisa never sees Pablo again. She did, however, leave a box of letters with her good friend Ana, providing a clue to a mystery that will span generations, each filled with romance and rebellion. The second story takes place in 2017, six months after Elisa’s death. Marisol—Elisa’s granddaughter and a journalist who writes travel pieces—makes the pilgrimage to Cuba to bury her grandmother’s ashes. In her will, Elisa merely tells Marisol that she will figure out where the ashes belong. Soon after she arrives, Marisol meets her own forbidden love, Luis Rodriquez, who is a history professor and a secret dissident that writes a political blog critical of Cuba. He is also the grandson of Elisa’s friend Ana and so the two get entwined together in the search for the answers to the mystery of Elisa - which reveals the story of Elisa and Pablo. Their combined efforts to track down news of Pablo’s fate bring the pair to the attention of the authorities, however; Luis is arrested for his work on the blog, and Marisol is also snatched from the streets. The history of Cuba is rich and complex, shaped by a mix of indigenous cultures, Spanish colonization, African influences, and geopolitical events. Next year in Havana reflects this complexity, most particularly in the way the book intertwines the primary stories of forbidden relationships with historical background and facts about Cuba. Reading about forbidden page 24

passion in one section, followed by an explanation of the variable peso can generate whiplash of a sort. But the portrait of Cuba painted from these different viewpoints is dazzling. Rich history, emerging cultures, continued difficulties with relationships with the United States -- marked by trade embargoes, diplomatic tensions, and the pride of place the Cubans feel; all of it is thought-provoking. And the personal stories of love and rebellion are easier to understand with this background. “To be Cuban is to be proud – it is both our greatest gift and our biggest curse. We serve no kings, bow no heads, bear our troubles on our backs as if they are nothing at all.” “Havana is like a woman who was grand once and has fallen on hard times, and yet hints of former brilliance remain, traces of an era since passed, a photograph faded by time and circumstance, its edges crumbling to dust.” Passages like these set the scene for a country that is only 75 miles from Key West, but largely inaccessible. And Next Year in Havana shows the same relationships amongst its lovers.

It is possible for Americans to visit Cuba. However, the country still remains off limits for tourist activities. This means U.S citizens currently cannot visit Cuba when the sole purpose of their trip is to sightsee, go to the beach, and explore. In 2023, Americans that wish to travel to Cuba must fall into one of the 12 approved categories of travel, determined by the Department of Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC). Road Scholar is one not for profit educational travel company that offers opportunities to travel legally to Cuba under the new OFAC Regulations published June 5, 2019. Following the General License category “Support for the Cuban People,” Road Scholar programs include activities intended to strengthen civil society in Cuba. Each day's program promotes independence for the Cuban people and results in meaningful interactions with the Cuban people.
