LGA FALL MEETING Wow! Our Fall Business Meeting closed out a great year! Paula Hall, Grace Kreft and I greeted ladies at the check-in table. 38 ladies attended which included 33 LGA members 2 of whom (Glenda Hinton and Gail Haines) were new members, 1 returning member (Gail McGurk) and 2 previous members (Linda Reynolds and Vee Johnson). No doubt all the ladies were impressed when they entered the dining room with the attractive centerpieces created by our Events Chairs, Grace Kreft and Mindy McCutcheon. Following a brief but convivial social “hour” we all found seats as our President, Arra Bolding, welcomed all and thanked everyone for attending the Meeting. Arra recognized Paula to lead us in prayer, who articulately asking for blessings. Speaking of the food, I think the consensus was that this was the best buffet we’ve had at any of our events, Chef. Jason prepared skewers of chicken with pineapple and of steak with mushrooms and onions, complemented with wild rice and a Fall vegetable medley. Of course, there was also a welcome house-made dessert of oatmeal cookies. In case that wasn’t enough, Arra made her delicious pound cake available and Christy offered her Rum cake, lusciously dripping in rum. The dinner was so good and the service was spot on, so Arra invited Chef Jason, the entire kitchen staff and the entire wait staff to come out so we could cheer them and thank everyone for making our dining experience so wonderful.

Arra then called the business Meeting to order, which began with Gail McGurk offering for sale Christmas ornaments of the late Jim Bennet’s final design. We were all thrilled that Jim’s wife, Dolores, who is a loyal LGA Member, was proudly in attendance. All the available ornaments were immediately sold! The Board was then introduced as follows: President Arra Bolding, Vice President Natalie Teuton, Treasurer Paula Hall and Secretary Ruth Nunes. Arra then requested Paula also ask blessings specifically for the business portion of the Meeting, with which Paula graciously complied. Arra was proud to announce the record turnout we had this year, as the LGA recorded a total of 772 tee times on our play days! That record was undoubtedly due in part to the hard work of Arra and Natalie organizing our play days and communicating through email. Paula presented LGA’s solvent financial position in some detail. As Secretary, I reviewed the minutes from the Spring Meeting which were accepted by the membership without objection. Paula also reminded the group that 5% of our dues is donated to a charity as voted by the members. Ultimately, KBD Foundation, which is headed by Lake Arrowhead resident, Dave Davis, was chosen by vote. Natalie provided updates on the website and directory, while encouraging everyone to participate not only in LGA events but also in Lake Arrowhead golf club events. She also continued on next page page 11

golf news reminded us to check out the LGA Facebook page which is maintained by Cynthia Samuels and features pictures of LGA players, golf quotes and cartoons. At last, the drum roll and the announcements of the 2023 Golf Season’s winners: • Ringer Board had 9 players. • Most Improved: 1st Lynn DeWolfe, 2nd Patti Adams • Best Play Days Attendance: 1st Cynthia Samuels, 2nd Natalie Teuton, 3rd Arra Bolding • Chip In’s: 9 players had Chip In’s; winners were chosen from a name draw: Patti Adams, Ruth Nunes, Lynn DeWolfe • Birdie Tree: 1st Ruth Nunes, 2nd Eleanor Gibbons, 3rd Arra Bolding • Eagles: Paula Hall, Christy Stewart The centerpieces were raffled off to 8 lucky ladies: Kathy Duerr, Glenda Hinton, Gail Salese, Arra Bolding, Pat Whiting, Karen Helm, Deb O’Sullivan, and Karen Fullerton. End of year gifts, designed to promote year-round play, were hand warmers, cooling towels and accessories bags, and were passed out to everyone. A really terrific Golf Season came to an official end as the 2023 Fall Meeting was adjourned.

community interest READING FOR THE AGES by Jeanne Schwartz The Last One | Will Dean | Emily Bester Books | Atria “Nothing is so painful to the human mind as a great and sudden change.” - Mary Shelley, Frankenstein One of the first things that happens when Caz Ripley boards the seven-story high Atlantica cruise ship with her boyfriend Pete Davenport is the sounding of the ship’s horn, blowing ominously. It is just the muster drill, mandatory under international law, to ensure passengers know what to do in the case of emergency. Caz is not a natural cruiser – or even traveler – and she is both intimidated by the detail of the evacuation plan and mesmerized by the ship’s accommodations. She and Pete are not even in the most expensive cabin class, and yet their quarters include multiple rooms, welcome champagne and separate dining quarters for everyone from Gold Class to Platinum – their class - to Diamond, the most luxurious. Know what? None of that matters if you wake up after your first night on the ship and your boyfriend is gone. Or that when you leave your cabin to head to breakfast, you notice that all of the cabin doors are wedged open. Unoccupied and unlocked, even as the ship is steaming full speed ahead. Not a single human being on any of the decks or promenades, nobody by the fully stocked complement of life boats. Caz was all by herself. She makes her way to the bridge, and finds it empty as well. No crew. Eventually, she finds three other passengers; Daniel Cho, Smith – as he insists on being called – and Frannie, a young woman of 21 hiding under her covers. Also, the lower deck that houses the dogs is populated; they are trapped in their cages, and many are hostile about their circumstance. The four find limited food stores in one of the ship’s massive refrigerators and help themselves to a meal while they try to figure out what has happened. Discussion ensues about the Flying Dutchman, the Princess Augusta and other so-called ghost ships which were found in open ocean with no crew or passengers aboard. Their first solution is to blast an SOS signal on the ship’s horn. But the horn doesn’t work. Smith, the sarcastic and jaded member of the four sighs that “the only rational explanation to me is that a thousand passengers woke up in the middle of the night and quietly, solemnly, threw themselves overboard.” It’s hard to write a review of a book when you don’t want to include spoilers. This book makes it particularly difficult because it the book itself is 438 pages long, but the average

chapter length is just over three pages. The definition of a pageturner. For now, suffice to say that soon all of the doors to all of the food storage are locked. Even the one they had been in. And after breaking down passenger cabin doors with a fire-axe, they find that every single mini-bar is empty. Alone, with no food. The life boats are a better option than the ship - sure to have food and medical supplies – and so they figure a way to jerry-rig a way to lower one to the water, planning to then lower Frannie to retrieve the supplies. But as soon as the lifeboat reaches the ocean, it tips over and sinks. As the four try to develop any kind of plan for finding food, finding out where they are and what has happened, Daniel says, “Humans can survive three weeks with no food, three days with no water, three hours with no shelter if it’s cold, three minutes with no hope.” There is a reason for all that has happened to our intrepid band of passengers that does not include anything otherworldly. This is not science fiction, and not a classic horror novel. Although horror is experienced – over and over – by the four. Intrigued yet? It takes until chapter 27 before the passengers are lured to the Ocean Lobby by a piano being played and then enter into their own hell as a TV comes on, and a woman’s lips fill the screen to announce: “Francine, Caroline, Daniel, Mr. Smith. Passengers of the RMS Atlantica, you are being….” And here I refuse the spoiler.

Will Dean’s locked-room thrillers - as the genre is called - bring to mind similar books by other authors: Misery, by Stephen King, Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None, The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware. If you enjoyed any of these, or the idea of an almost - plausible, horrifying tale of danger and suspense, I promise you will like this book. In this one, however, the danger comes from without, not from within.
