On July 22nd & 23rd, 34 Lake Arrowhead golf members played in the 2023 Member – Member Golf Tournament. Always competitive, this year’s tournament was no exception. Craig Glasgow and Bill Maynard won the low gross score honors! Larry Adams and Rex Wallace won the overall low net score.
The Member – Member Golf Tournament is an annual event where golf club members form 2-person teams to compete for trophies and prizes plus the honor of being named Tournament Champions for the year. The tournament format is known by several names (four ball, best ball, and better ball) but whatever it is called, it essentially requires each team member to play their own ball. At the end of each hole, the lowest individual score is recorded as the team score. This year’s tournament was divided into 3 flights: First, Second, and Third. The winners were:
1st Flight
1st Place Gross – Bill Maynard & Craig Glasgow
2nd Place Gross – Brian Schell & Sean Webb
1st Place Net – Bruce Thomas & Paul Bolding
2nd Place Net – Jeff Ciupak & Mel Standley

RED, WHITE & BLUE SCRAMBLE - JULY 4TH, 2023
Red, White, and Blue in this instance had a dual meaning. Besides representing Independence Day and our nation’s flag, it was an integral part of the tournament rules. As many of you know, the Lake Arrowhead Golf Course has five sets of tees, three of which are red, white, and blue. The closest (and typically easiest) are the red tees and the longest (and typically the hardest) are the blue tees. In between are the white tees.
To start the tournament, each of the teams teed off from the white tees. If the team made a par, it continued to play from the white tees on the next hole. However, if the team made a birdie, it moved back to the harder blue tees on the next hole: if the team made a bogey, it moved up to the easier red tees. This process continued throughout the tournament.
The tournament field was divided into four flights based on each team’s score. Pro Shop gift certificates were then awarded to each member of the top three teams in each flight. Ties were broken with a scorecard playoff starting on hole 18. The winners were:

LALGA RED WHITE AND BLUE
For those of you who haven’t caught on yet the LALGA has 2 events every month. The first Thursday of every month 18 hole handicapped Cat Fight and the third Thursday a 9 hole themed event.
June’s themed event was a nontraditional scramble where a two person team played a tee shot. After that, the two team members alternated every other shot until holed out. I played with Grace Kreft (who by the way does the beautiful decorations for the LGA events) and was hoping to not be the person that needed to make it across the ravines. I did okay with it but we didn’t finish in the money though we had as much fun as everyone else.
We had 15 ladies dressed in their celebratory red, white and blue outfits, which delightedly complemented the patriotic decorations at the clubhouse.
The pace of play really moved along quickly and we were all back at the clubhouse for an early lunch, which by the way was really delicious and came from the new Highlands Grill menu. Torrey and Kynsey provided excellent service with never ending smiles.
With all the teams scorecards submitted and tallied, the winners announced were as follows.
1st Place Janice Larkin and Cynthia Samuels
2nd Place Patty Adams and Natalie Teuton
3rd Place Janice Cash and Karen Helm
4th Place Jan Benefield and Heather Gass
There were a few players that thought there should be a payout for every time they said I’m sorry for a missed shot. Unfortunately, I don’t think anyone’s beads could count that high. It certainly sounded like good humor was widespread, even outside the winners circle.
The first Thursday Cat Fight only had 6 people completing all 18 holes qualifying for the prizes. Joan Eberhardt finished in first place with Martha Elkins in 2nd. Note to the Ladies; Even if you do not wish to play 18 holes you can still come out and play 9.
If you are still considering joining the LGA you are welcome to join us on the Monday afternoon or Thursday morning play days. Call the pro shop to sign up. Regular rates apply. You don’t need a golf handicap. There’s still plenty of golf left to play in this young season.
The LGA had a total of 150 individual tee time reservations for our events and play days in the month of June. We continue to thrive!

LAKE ARROWHEAD TRIVIA #100 June 15, 2023 – Morris A. Nunes, TriviaMaster
It has been an honor and a wonderful pleasure to serve as Lake Arrowhead’s TriviaMaster, a position in which I am thrilled to be able to continue. So, I was particularly delighted to reach a milestone of presenting Trivia #100 on June 15.
Many thanks to all of Lake Arrowhead and the many participants who have supported this activity and have been generous with their applause and compliments.
Thanks as well to the Highlands Grill staff, led now in front by Caroline Crowson (and previously by Elizabeth Raymond) and in back now by Chef Jason Danneman, for their patience and support over this long period , as well as for special help with spirited decorations, champagne and cake to celebrate the 100th, for which Steve Roe and James Haslam have my thanks for authorizing champagne as an extra touch for all attendees.
So, I am pleased to present the Q&A from the 100th Trivia below. If these questions look familiar, that’s because they are a more or less random selection from the previous 99 Trivias in recognition of reaching this centennial.
N.B. Lake Arrowhead Trivia utilizes a mnemonic with the 1st letter of each of the 25 answers (or phrase 1st substantive word (e.g. title) or last name if a person) in order, spell a message. Figuring out the mnemonic yields no extra credit, but can be a valuable hint for questions that might stump you.

READING FOR THE AGES by
Jeanne Schwartz
Demon Copperhead | by Barbara Kingsolver |
This book is painful. I spent a lot of time wondering why I was reading it, why I was putting myself through the torment. But still. There is redemption – or the promise of redemption.
The book is an updated retelling of David Copperfield, and Barbara Kingsolver just won the Pulitzer Prize for literature for it, partially because, I think, it takes a special kind of bravery to take Charles Dickens’ most sentimental novel and write it again for today.
But it’s not a book for book club, unless your book club is extremely serious and willing to look at very tough subjects straight on for long periods of time.
Still. Powerful. There have been a ton of books written about the opioid crisis, about the Sacklers who engineered it and profited from it, and this book places the fictional Lee County at the heart of their initial targeting efforts to get the ball rolling, so to speak. Lee County, ”hillbilly country,” where to be there was to be known. “If Lee County isn’t that, it’s nothing.”
Demon’s life was doomed from the start. He was born in southwest Virginia in the late 1980s to a teenage mother who equipped herself for childbirth with gin, amphetamines and Vicodin. She had no idea how to care for him – or even any interest in doing so. Their trailer was as much a mess as her head. Demon said: “I asked mom one time how to fix the bed so it was covered up like you see them on TV, which she thought was dead hilarious.”
To escape Stoner, his mom’s abusive husband, Demon had his best friend Maggot next door. Until Stoner forbade contact between them. The torment of home didn’t end until his mother was sent to rehab for a long stint, and Demon became a ward of the state. Which is to say, as the New York Times book review put it, he undergoes a transformation from “boy” to “inventory.” Shuttled off on a string of foster care “families” who were in it only for the money and treated their fosters like slaves or worse. Demon spent years hungry, lonely and worked to the bone. His only refuge was drawing superheroes, and imagining the rescue they would undertake to save him. That, and dreaming and scheming about ways to see the ocean. A dream that a few times seemed like it was going to come true, but was consistently thwarted by circumstance.
Published by Harper
As a foster of the alcoholic football coach at the high school, Demon enjoyed a respite. He became fast friends with Angus, Coach’s daughter, and was given a chance to play football on the much - touted high school team, the Generals. His friendship with Angus lasted. Football didn’t, as a knee injury he suffered during a game got him hooked on opioids.
And from then on, the planning to procure, the machinations that were involved in procuring, the staging of the times when the drugs could be taken – and which ones and how much - became the central preoccupation of his life.
His only lasting salvation through the years was his drawing. He drew cartoons, panels, characters everywhere he went, and gained the support and understanding of a high school art teacher along the way who became one of his rare advocates. Even after he dropped out of school.
At his worst, he moved in with his girlfriend Dori, who was at least an enabler, if not the cause of his addiction to substances other than Oxy. She deteriorated into worse shape than Demon, at all times either passed out or shooting up. But he stayed loyal. “All she wanted in the world was to be loved. I had to think of her as my baby doll. You don’t blame a doll for slacking. You watch her pretty eyes open and shut. You tuck it under the covers at night.”
Excited to read this yet? But there is at least a form of redemption. Demon was a brave, beat-up striver who never lost a kernel of faith. He addressed challenges head-on: “This ain’t no hill for a climber. I’ve been doing this all of my life.”
And honestly, I can say that after finishing the novel, I am very glad I read it. It’s that good.
Purdue Pharma has been held at least partially accountable for the ravages of the opioid epidemic, but the carnage is out there, with Fentanyl now joining the party. For those who have been prescribed Oxycodone for pain after surgery, you’re more than likely getting a 5mg dose for a limited period of time. On the street, people buy 40s or 80s, with some ingesting 240mg a day.
