Our first events of the season were off to a great start. We had beautiful weather for both the initial monthly, First-Thursday 18 hole individual play Cat Fight, and for the initial monthly 3rd-Thursday Themed Event, a 9 hole-2 person scramble.
Not only did we have beautiful weather for these two events we also had a good turnout for each. To add to the positive firsts, may I say my group played well on the usually challenging first hole in both events!
The Cat Fights, on the first Thursday of each month will be held through October. Each is handicapped and point based, with pick up your ball after a double bogey. Players do not need a handicap to play, though points will likely be assigned more accurately for those who have one. Fifteen players participated in the first Cat Fight with payouts from the $5 buyin to the top four players. Suzie Champitto was the champ and took home 1st place followed by Paula Hall for 2nd, while Roz Waldron and your Author tied for 3rd. After play, all enjoyed lunch and socializing with friends on the Clubhouse patio.
Our first themed event was the Tee-off Toga Party. Several of the attending 15 dressed in their finest of Togas and a few of us, admittedly myself included, dressed otherwise, as is optional, with no Togas readily available..
As a 2 person 9 hole scramble, one can count on your partner for a little help, because in a scramble after both team members hit, the next shot is played from their choice of the
better shot. I certainly got help and the format let us move quickly along to enjoy the day. In fact, so quickly, we were in the Clubhouse for an early lunch and the announcement of the top 3 teams! First place Christy Stewart and Cynthia Samuels, second place Grace Kreft and Jan Garbiel and third place to Patti Adams and your Author.
We hope you can join us for the first and third Thursday events. The buy in for all events is just $5 plus the regular Highlands Course fees. Players need to be a member of the LGA to play in those special (and very enjoyable) events. However ladies, non-members can join us on our Monday play days at 3:30 p.m., for 9 holes casual play with social hour to follow and/or Thursdays mornings at 9 a.m. for 18 holes. Those play dates are a terrific introduction to LGA, and, as you’ll find, show that the skills of LGA Members fall into all categories. Our play opportunities are for fun and a great way to make new friends. We are gladly welcoming new members.
Call the clubhouse at 770-721 7902 to sign up!.
The season is just starting, so join us and get your game on!

Cherokee County, Georgia has recently adopted an ordinance regarding short-term rentals. a. Owners must apply to the Cherokee County Development Services Center on an annual basis for a certificate.
b. Certificates require an initial administration fee and annual renewal fees.
3. The Certificate number must be listed in any advertisement for the rental of the property.
4. No short-term rental shall offer more than five (5) bedrooms for rent.
5. The use of outdoor speakers by short-term rentals is prohibited.

• Always travel in a counter-clockwise direction on the big lake.
• Watch for debris or skiers that may have fallen far away from the shoreline.
• You must stay 100 ft. from other boats, kayaks, and docks according to Georgia law.
• Please respect the no wake areas - this means your boat should not be causing a wake by the speed of your boat. A wake is any wave caused by your boat.
• Have plenty of life jackets - a life jacket for each person on board.
• If it’s dark, navigation lights must be on.
• When pulling a skier/tuber there must be a driver and a spotter.
• Small children must wear a life jacket at all times.
• Don’t harass wildlife with your boat.
• Be aware of the weather.
• please don’t litter.
• Lastly, please go 25 mph or less on our roads, it's just common sense to avoid an accident.

LAKE ARROWHEAD WOMEN'S ACTIVITY CLUB by Donna Gallagher, LA WAC's Secretary
The lovely ladies of the Lake Arrowhead Women’s Activity Club had a wonderful luncheon at Big Door Vineyards in White, GA. The view was breathtaking, the food was delicious and the wine was fabulous. Sharon, the manager at Big Door Vineyards, took great care of us. She was very helpful in recommending wines and offering samples for those of us that were indecisive. Founders, and childhood friends, Rodney Alldredge and Ray Parker also stopped by to give us a history of their vineyards and recount how they got into the grape growing business.
We know how to have fun at our monthly outings! Lake Arrowhead Women's Activity Club annual dues are $10. If you are interested in joining, send your check (made payable to WAC) to our treasurer Tommy Simmons at 284 Hillside Drive. Please include your name, email and phone number. We’d love to have you join us!

READING FOR THE AGES
by Jeanne Schwartz
Horse: A Novel | Geraldine Brooks | Viking, June, 202
“Fiction is obliged to stick to possibilities. Truth isn’t.” -
Horse is a story about a racehorse born in 1850 with the name Darley, but who became Lexington. It is also the story of Jarrett, Darley’s groom and then trainer, who spent his life as a slave, and thus was variously named “Warfield’s Jarret” or “Ten Broeck’s Jarrett.” And it is the story of those in their orbit, and those who painted Lexington, and later studied and celebrated a horse who was described this way by a journalist for Turf, Field, and Stream:
“He was as far superior to all horses that had gone before him as the vertical blaze of a tropical sun is superior to the faint and scarcely distinguishable glimmer of the most distant star.”
High praise. And high praise from me for Geraldine Brooks’ excellent new novel, her first in 8 years, and 20 years after the book “Year of Wonders” introduced me to her as an author and made me a fan. This is a novel, and the modernday characters are fictional, but the historical facts are true. Even today you can visit the International Museum of the Horse in Kentucky to see Lexington.
The story opens in 2019, with Theo, who is a PhD. candidate in art history. He has pulled a painting of a horse out of the neighbor’s trash in D.C and is pitching its study as his thesis. His eventual girlfriend Jess is a zoologist who manages an osteology prep lab at the Smithsonian, and is busy articulating a skeleton marked “Horse” that has been pulled out the attic where it has been gathering dust for years.
The two are an unlikely match: Theo is an upper crust Yalie, son of diplomats, Black, and wary. Jess is an Aussie from Sydney who has, only through a series of coincidences, ended up at The Smithsonian, following her lifelong passion for studying animal skeletons. She suspects him of trying to steal her bicycle, but becomes enamored of his Australian Kelpie Clancy. He bristles at her “hostile micro-aggression.” She takes offense at his high-brow aloofness. But together, they puzzle over the coincidences between his found painting and her found skeleton, and their story develops.
Sliding back in time to 1850, Jarrett is present as Alice Corneal foals the colt who will start life as Darley. Jarrett’s father had received the horse as a gift from their owner Warfield, after earning enough to buy his freedom (but not Jarrett’s). He does entrust the young horse to Jarrett, and it is soon apparent that Darley is a born racer. But after Darley’s first win, the horse – and Jarrett – are sold: threats based on an obscure rule that prevents Negroes from entering a horse
in a race forced the sale.
Jarrett and the horse now known as Lexington are as bonded as a human and animal can be, reading eachothers’ signals expertly. Their new owner is no fool, and sees how well Lexington does under Jarret’s care. Their story develops.
Others affect the eventual discovery of the history of Lexington; painters, art dealers, people associated with Lexington’s progeny. (Lexington covered 960 mares, resulting in 575 foals, many of whom went on to be outstanding champions, four winning the Belmont Stakes and three winning the Preakness – Preakness himself was a Lexington foal). A visiting researcher at the Smithsonian tells Jess that “Horse” is THE horse, the greatest racing stallion in American turf history, identifiable by an abnormality in his skeleton.
Thomas J. Scott, a minor equestrian painter and journalist, is also a peripheral player. His paintings are designed to “give a man a likeness that shows not just how beautiful the horse looks, but how beautiful it feels to him.”
The book feels fast paced simply because there are so many characters and stories across the timeline. It delivers the simple joy of reading an author who creates characters readers care about and telling their stories.
It doesn’t hurt that Brooks is a terrific author. She imbues her characters with authentic voices: Jarrett’s way of moving through life is summed up this way: “It wasn’t a good idea to speak without putting a deal of thought into it. Words could be snares. Less of them you laid out there, less likely they could trap you up.” And her descriptions are delightful: “As fall advanced, the air lost its furry breath and freshened.”
Enjoy.
In 1855, Lexington’s owner organized the first race against time rather than against a field of horses on the track, to showcase Lexington’s speed and cement the horse’s reputation. The horse crossed the finish line just seven minutes, 19 and three-quarter seconds. That world speed record would last two decades. The American Watch Company wanted to tap the resulting enthusiasm. They didn't make the stopwatch that timed Lexington, but they were the first to design and mass-produce the stopwatch, christening it “the sporting watch.”

Scouting for Summer Pests!
Warmer temperatures mean summer fun, but they also bring pests to the garden and landscape. Fortunately, gardeners and homeowners spend more time outside tending to things this time of year and are able to spot some of these common pests before they become a major issue! Here are just a few to defend against.
Nothing is more heart breaking than tending to summer vegetable plants and then having them ravaged in just a matter of days. While humidity in the South is inviting for many diseases, especially on tomato plants, one thing gardeners can control is the tomato hornworm. This fat, green worm looks like something out of Alice in Wonderland, and it is anything but cute. Just one or two per tomato plant can strip it of its leaves in a matter of days. Rather than using a chemical, these guys can be plucked right off the plant by hand and then left for the birds to enjoy. Other than humans, some natural enemies to tomato hornworm are wasps and praying mantis, so you can often depend on nature to take its course.
To prevent damage by tomato hornworm, gardeners must scout plants carefully every few days, as the pest’s green color blends right in with leaves. A full sized tomato hornworm is typically an inch and a half to two inches long. If infestations are great,Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) sprays are acceptable for organic control.
A favorite plant for Japanese beetles are roses, but this pest will feed on many ornamental plants and even trees throughout the summer. They’re easily identified by their iridescent green color, and the damage they cause is hard to ignore. They eat leaves down to just the veins, leaving them looking skeletonized. The effectiveness of using the yellow Japanese beetle traps is debated because, while trapping some, it may also draw a large, unwanted population to the landscape. Place the traps away from susceptible plants, and remove the trap once it’s got activity on it. Chemical control is possible to suppress them, but elimination is difficult. Read and follow pesticide labels for application amounts and timing to mitigate the risk to other, desirable insects.
Noticing yellow or browning in spots of the lawn, or perhaps soft, spongy spots? This can be damage by chipmunks, birds, and especially moles, which feed on earthworms underground. Most creatures dig up spots in the grass, but moles tunneling underneath certainly affect larger areas in the lawn by pushing soil up! Their tunnels can span an entire yard. Reducing watering and stomping the tunnels down to redirect moles are often effective methods, but are ones that need constant attention. Traps are available to stop them from tunneling, but caution must be used and the homeowner educated so as to not harm or injure the wrong animal.
April and May brought thousands of questions into county extension offices statewide about strange, toothpick-like growths coming out of the trunks of many trees- commonly figs, crape myrtles and maples. Ambrosia beetle bores into unhealthy, often weakened and thin-barked trees around the turn of spring, and what is seen along the trunk is the sawdust kicked out of the holes they’ve bored. Over the summer, a second generation will emerge from affected tree trunks to scout out more trees to continue their lifecycle. Once this damage is spotted, it is important to cut away the affected limbs or trunks and remove and either bag or burn them. Proper tree care, health, and maintenance are the best defenses against problems like this. Certified arborists can also be consulted about preventative sprays for vulnerable trees.
And finally, there’s not a person on this planet who cares formosquitoes as they try and enjoy summer fun! Keys to reducing mosquitoes are eliminating standing water in common areas and in clogged gutters and using Mosquito Dunks in desired water, like ponds and birdbaths. They’re deemed safe for birds and fish. Consider an oscillating fan while relaxing outdoors. And rather than treating your entire outdoor area, treat yourself with repellents like Off, Deet or Skin So Soft. Lastly, make some adjustments to how you get dressed! Avoid dark clothing and strongly scented soaps. Apparently that’s what they’re most attracted to. Who knew?!

WANT HELP STAYING COOL? GET OUT YOUR LAWN MOWER…
I recently received the following question.
Dave - In an effort to make our a/c unit less conspicuous in the backyard my wife has allowed plants to grow up around it. I tried to tell her that this is potentially bad for the unit but she doesn’t agree.
We’ve agreed to let you decide. Help! John in Lithia Springs
So, first of all – this is what I really love, the entire sanctity of a marriage hinging on my word. Sorry wife, I’m on John’s side on this one and here’s why.
Your a/c unit needs to be able to breathe. It takes fresh air in on the sides and exhausts hot air out of the top. It also needs room to be services and washed.
Therefore your unit should be clear of any obstructions, from plants to more permanent structures like a fence or your house for at least 18” on every side.
Not only that, but in case someone thinks you should build a deck over the unit, there should be at least 5 ft. of clearance on the top of the unit as well.
So John, keep the area around your a/c unit clean and clear of debris. If you want to make your wife happy, feel free to plant and maintain some nice shrubbery about 3 ft. away from the unit.
Just make sure you leave room for the service man to get to your unit. Also leave room for your tent so that you will have a place to sleep.

WEATHER BY CHRISTINA
Summer pop up storms can bring some of the worst weather of the year
Afternoon “pop up” thunderstorms are common this time of year, courtesy of our area’s warm and humid conditions. But sometimes, these pop up storms can be strong enough to produce wind damage -- including downed trees and powerlines. Some of the worst weather of the year can occur in the late spring and summer months as these storms produce torrential downpours as well as frequent lightning, and winds strong enough to topple trees.
But what makes a storm strong enough to be considered “severe”?
SEVERE STORM CRITERIA
A “bad storm” can be rather intense to drive through, and the thunder can be rather loud, but a thunderstorm is considered “severe” if it produces any of the following:
Ƚ Wind gusts 58 mph or greater (Why 58 mph? Because the traditional wind speed unit is knots, and 50 knots converts to 58 mph.)
Ƚ Hail that is 1 inch in diameter or greater (the size of a U.S. quarter)
Ƚ Tornado(es)
What are the main impacts from severe thunderstorms?
Lightning: While lightning is not a criterion for classifying a storm as severe, a “lightning jump” or large increase of lightning strikes in a short amount of time can signify a rapidly strengthening thunderstorm. These thunderstorms contain strong updrafts, or upward moving winds, that push water droplets and ice crystals higher in the atmosphere. Along the way, friction between the rain drops and ice crystals produce different static charges in the cloud, and lightning discharges the static electrical build up within the storm cloud. The more lightning strikes within a storm, the stronger the updrafts and more than likely the stronger the winds associated with the storm.
Wind Damage: High winds are the main impacts from severe thunderstorms. Wind gusts as high as 58 mph or greater have the potential to knock down and uproot trees, down power lines, and cause structural damage to homes and buildings.
Often, in the late spring and summer, damaging winds within a thunderstorm are due to downbursts, which are rapidly-moving downward columns of rain-cooled air.
