Red, White & Blue Scramble July 4
46 golfers braved frigid temperatures and wind to play in the most unique tournament format of the year. The 4-person scramble format is very common but we add a twist to this event. Each player can only use 4 clubs! The partners cannot share clubs. This added a touch of difficulty and fun as each golfer had to decide which clubs to use and how best to maneuver around the course. For example, most golfers used a putter as one of their four clubs while a few others decided to leave their putter at home and used a driver or other club to putt.
The field was divided into three flights and awarded Pro Shop gift certificates to the top three teams in each flight. Using this process, the winners with the overall lowest score were Pat Farrelly, Jeff Ciupak, Mel Standley, and Lee Heubner
First Flight:
1st Place – Pat Farrelly, Jeff Ciupak, Lee Heubner, Mel Standley
2nd Place – Dave Davis, Steve Hopson, Bruce Thomas, Rick Salese
Second Flight:
1st Place – Michelle Maynard, Pam Glasgow, Eddie Martin, Ralph Lumpkin

LALGA 2023 SEASON by Ruth Nunes
It’s here! The 2023 LALGA season officially “kicked off” the evening of March 22 with our Spring Opener Meeting. But don’t worry if you missed the meeting, the season is just beginning and there are play days every Monday afternoon at 3:30 and Thursday mornings at 9.
If you are planning to play, please call the clubhouse to sign up for the ladies tee time and arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the tee time. You know the number for the golf shop: 770-721-7902. In addition to the play days the LALGA has events every month. Mark your calendars, save the dates this is what we have planned for the upcoming season.
April 20, 9AM, Tee off Toga Party
May 18, 9AM, Famous Golf Stars Tournament
June 15, 9AM, Red White and Blue Chip
July 20, 9 AM, Christmas in July
August 17, 9 AM, Golf Masquerade
September 21, 9 AM, Fiesta Tournament
October 19, 9 AM Tinker Bell Hole in One Tournament
November 8, 6PM, LALGA Fall Business Meeting
All of the events are a 9 hole scramble; many, if not all, have an interesting “twist” which will help “level the playing field” and even give players like me a chance to win. On the first
Thursday of every month, in addition to the scheduled 9 hole events , there will be an 18 hole competition. The players will decide if they want to do a “buy in” and everyone will play their own ball.
If you are interested in joining the LALGA you are welcome to join us on the play days but you must be a member to play in the monthly events. The annual membership is $40. Buy in for the tournament prize money is $5 per event. Regular course rates apply to play days and events.
In addition to our events and play days the LALGA often organizes teams for other tournaments on the Highlands Course. Ladies teams are organized for charity events such as Golfing for Children and the KBD Foundation tournament and for club events such as the Three King’s Tournament.
The season is just getting started, so if you are thinking about joining now is the time. Come join us on the play days or contact any of the officers for more information.
Our webpage is lakearrowheadlga.net or follow us on Facebook Lake Arrowhead Ladies Golf Association We can also be contacted at: LALGA2023@GMAIL.COM
We would be delighted to see you out on Lake Arrowhead Highlands Course!

SECURITY UPDATE
It’s getting to be boating season so just a few tips for the safety and enjoyment of all...
• Always travel in a counter-clockwise direction on the big lake.
• Watch for debris or skiers that may have fallen far away from the shoreline.
• You must stay 100 ft. from other boats, kayaks, and docks according to Georgia law.
• Please respect the no wake areas - this means your boat should not be causing a wake by the speed of your boat. A wake is any wave caused by your boat.
• Have plenty of life jackets - a life jacket for each person on board.
• If it’s dark, navigation lights must be on.
• When pulling a skier/tuber there must be a driver and a spotter.
• Small children must wear a life jacket at all times.
• Don’t harass wildlife with your boat.
• Be aware of the weather.
• please don’t litter.
• Lastly, please go 25 mph or less on our roads, it's just common sense to avoid an accident.

HOMELESS VETERANS GOLF EVENT— PROGRAM GUIDE
9th Annual Homeless Veteran Charity Golf Event set for Friday May 19th at Lake Arrowhead Highlands Course
The 9th annual Charity Homeless Veterans Golf Outing is set for this fall at the Lake Arrowhead Highlands Golf Course in Waleska, Ga. The shotgun start event will be held on Friday the 19th of May and will have a 4 person team scramble format.
The event is put on by the Cherokee County Homeless Veterans program (CCHVP) with support from local veterans and volunteers. 100% of the proceeds of the golf outing goes to support the various programs of the CCHVP and 100% of the monies spent by the CCVHP stays here in Cherokee County.
Homeless Veteran Situation in Georgia today In the last Housing and Urban Development report to Congress dated December 2022, the State of Georgia was identified as lagging in several areas as it relates to Homeless Veterans to include:
Among largely rural CoCs, Hawaii Balance of State and Georgia Balance of State had the highest percentages of veterans experiencing unsheltered homelessness (82% and 81%). Cherokee County is part of the Georgia Balance of State.
Veterans were less likely than all people experiencing homelessness to be in major cities (47% vs. 50%). Rural counties like Cherokee is where we are seeing more homeless Veterans coming to us as we have a viable program to help them.
Cherokee County is only one of 31counties counting homeless of the 152 rural counties in Georgia. This is a 20% response rate which impacts our ability to obtain grant funding for programs
Cherokee County does not qualify for VASH or Per Diem housing support for Veterans. We do qualify for SSVF Grants for Veterans with families with children under 17. It typically takes up to 16 weeks to get into the SSVF program. To accept SSVF you currently have to leave Cherokee County as our SSVF provider has no landlord contracts in place and many apartments do not accept government vouchers.

THE VOYAGE OF THE SEAEAGLE (CONTINUED FROM LAST MONTH)
Reflection on past experiences in life allows for remarkable and often humbling experiences! Such is the case for this skipper as he reflects on his voyage into Covid 19 in March of 2020. Hindsight matters and serves as a catalyst for growth. Please read on and enjoy the insights gathered by the skipper and crew in an unexpected journey into a new world.
As SeaEagle continued her voyage down the intra-coastal waterways of North Carolina, our remote and isolated location was both reassuring and alarming. Our news feeds and VHF radio chatter revealed changes were occurring in our world. The information we received was difficult to comprehend as the radio crackled about closed marinas, restaurants, and even public restrooms. There was also mention of acute shortages of certain products, most notably toilet paper. Could this really be happening? It was hard to imagine, especially on a normally festive and celebratory time around St. Patrick’s Day.
The crew of SeaEagle battled uncertainty as we approached the public dock in Swansboro, North Carolina, a.k.a. the “Friendly City by the Sea.” After several “go rounds” attributed to swift current, we slid safely into the slip and secured our dock lines. According to our Waterway Guide, Swansboro has a rich history and is known for its eclectic shops and eateries. It is also a mecca for water sports enthusiasts. Not today! As we stepped off SeaEagle and found our way toward the center of town, we detected a quiet and eerie atmosphere. All of the shops and restaurants were officially closed. The town had a spooky and quiet aura about it and the other guests encountered spoke in hushed, subdued tones. Mike, George, and I discussed this on a street corner and agreed the town had a post-apocalyptic feel about it. Cruising sailors are a gregarious lot and we found it difficult to maintain “social distance,” a term to soon become all too familiar in our modern vernacular.
After several days of cruising down the intracoastal way, we were all anxious for connection with others and soon small groups started gathering and seeking solace from each other. While pandemics have occurred often throughout history, this was a challenging first for virtually everyone in town, including us. As groups gathered and discussed the circumstances, bonds began to develop as we all learned about each other’s respective circumstances and challenges. Connection is key to enduring challenges in life and new friendships formed quickly. We soon discovered that food was available in certain restaurants and bathrooms were open at a nearby outdoor café.
Our dinner that evening was special as we talked at length about how our voyage had changed. Sailors are adaptable at sea and those skills came in handy on land. The skipper and
crew had to adapt and improvise our approach to certain tasks if we were to have a successful trip.
The crew of SeaEagle was chosen for a variety of reasons. Living in close confines requires patience, flexibility, a sense of humor, and adaptability. These are all hallmarks of a positive attitude and can make or break your voyage. Moreover, these qualities are key to enduring challenging events both on shore and at sea. Despite our seemingly stressful, even dire circumstances, the crew of SeaEagle remained upbeat and willing to embrace the challenges as they unfolded.
Sailors often face great peril at sea if they make a mistake. Behavior matters on a boat and consequences can be harsh. Life also provides us with unexpected ironies like the one encountered in Swansboro. Our decision to come ashore placed us at greater risk than remaining at sea. Land was no longer our source of refuge. This proved to be a true and unexpected conundrum.
As our connection strengthened during our voyage, another benefit slowly emerged that helped us cope with our changing world, perspective. Seeing the world go by at 5 knots (or less!) affords more time to reflect on life and what matters most. Our view from the cockpit constantly shifts as the miles pass beneath the keel. We see it all, plush waterfront homes, ramshackle huts, derelict vessels, and amazing wildlife. At times our souls are called toward the open sea or toward a tranquil and secure cove. Traveling by sail affords us the ability to connect with nature, embrace physical challenges, and cultivate friendships. These qualities help us all see our world through a different lens and offers a healthier perspective of life.
As our trip unfolded, we encountered numerous problems. Voyaging under sail is sometimes referred to as “the most expensive way to travel third class!” Truth through humor is often telling and all too accurate. That said, as we learned more about the trials ahead, the crew would often migrate toward the cockpit of SeaEagle. This is the most important area on the vessel and somewhat akin to the board room of a corporation. The cockpit is where the decisions happen, both good and bad! Each morning we would begin by discussing our goals and plans for the day. What was our next destination? What navigation hazards or weather factors would we face? What steps did we need to make to safely reach our destination? Goals and planning were key elements of our trip and essential to a safe outcome.
As the skipper and author of this article, I am thankful for the experiences aboard SeaEagle. In the end, I noted an obvious irony that I had overlooked as we sailed into a tempest
APRIL TO MAY 2023 page 24
community interest
that would change our world forever, the onset of Covid 19. I had spent considerable time, money, and resources to insure our physical well-being on board. SeaEagle bristled with safety gear. Life rafts, flares, floatation devices, radar, fire extinguishers, and throw bags were ready for use in the event of an emergency. However, none of these items were helpful in the onset of a pandemic.
In the end, it was our internal resources or resiliency skills that proved most beneficial during our voyage. The ability to connect with others, adapt our behavior, maintain a positive attitude, keep perspective, and plan/set goals were essential internal tools for a safe voyage. The five skills mentioned in this article are key components of resiliency, the ability to adapt and overcome adversity in your life. Sailor or not, these tools can be useful for your voyage through life.
The world we departed from underwent major changes in just a week. It would require adjustment on our part. After docking SeaEagle in Hampstead, North Carolina we rented a car and started the journey home. As the miles ticked away, the changes were obvious. Traffic was light, even as we approached Atlanta. Restaurants, stores, and schools were closed. What a difference one week can make as the skipper and crew of SeaEagle voyaged into a world. A new norm was in place, and we were ready. Our journey from Virginia to North Carolina had changed us for the better. It was good to be home!
Join us next month to learn more about the final resiliency factor that helped us during our voyage. In the interim, if you want more information about resiliency, visit my website: www.ResilientHorizons.com or email John@ ResilientHorizons.com

READING FOR THE AGES
The Things They Carried
Tim O’Brien | Houghton Mifflin
by Jeanne Schwartz
This book, originally published in 1990, is a collection of linked stories that paint a vivid picture of the Vietnam War, as told by the author and his fictional counterpart, First Lieutenant Jimmy Cross.
It is an immersive book. One that will stay with you, whether this is your first read or your fifth. And this review will make liberal use of quotes from the book, because the writing speaks for itself.
The Things They Carried has visceral impact because it mimics the chaos of war. The use of real place names, and inclusion of Tim O’Brien as a protagonist blurs fiction and non-fiction. And stories are told from first person, second person and third person, contributing to the disorientation that suffused the men of the fictional – but not really – Alpha Company, and to the hallucinatory line between reality and fiction.
Called “a ground-breaking meditation on war, memory, imagination, and the redemptive power of story-telling,” the book begins with the title story, “The Things They Carried.”
This story sets the table by piling on the weight of the tangible and intangible things carried by soldiers in the Vietnam war. The list starts with the endless number of required items in their packs: P-38 can openers, pocket knives, heat tabs, dog tags, mosquito repellant, sewing kits, Military Payment Certificates, etc., and lists the weight of each item.
Next are the things they chose to carry, in order to maintain the things that kept them individuals. These items shed light on each soldier’s personality: three pairs of socks and a can of Dr. Scholl’s foot powder as a precaution against trench foot; condoms; a diar; comic books; a grandfather’s old hunting hatchet, etc. Ted Lavender, whose death is a central part of the story, carried 6 or 7 ounces of premium dope. First Lieutenant Jimmy Cross carried letters from a girl back home, that were not love letters, but made Cross hopeful.
And also, “they shared the weight of memory. They took up what others could no longer bear. Often, they carried each other, the wounded or weak.”
The feelings of the soldiers are put out there in truth: things that perhaps you never heard from people in your life who have come back from war, because the experience is buried and the memories are too painful. Tim O’Brien shares:
“For the most part they carried themselves with poise, a kind of dignity. Now and then, however, there were times of panic, when they squealed or wanted to squeal but couldn't, when they twitched and made moaning sounds and covered their heads and said Dear Jesus and flopped around on the earth and fired their weapons blindly and cringed and sobbed and begged for the noise to stop and went wild and made stupid promises to themselves and to God and to their mothers and fathers, hoping not to die. In different ways, it happened to all of them.”
One member of the company describes seeing fellow soldier Ted Lavender die: “It was like watching a rock drop to the ground.” The men carry him to a chopper and then smoke his dope.
The soldiers respond to the trauma of death by dealing out terrible, mindless death to others. It's an endless, awful cycle.
Of the 15 stories in the book, the ones that spoke the loudest to me were “On the Rainy River” and “How to Tell a True War Story.”
“On the Rainy River” is the story of Tim O’Brien’s internal struggle when he received his draft notice: should he go to Canada, just an eight - hour drive away? Or go to fight. “It was a moral split. I couldn’t make up my mind. I feared the war, yes, but I also feared exile.” At the Tip Top Lodge, on the Rainy River, over whose banks lay Canada, Tim met a man who was the “hero of his life.” He stayed for six days with 81-year-old Elroy Berdahl, who accepted Tim into his quiet routine without fuss or ceremony. Tim made his decision. After the war he observed “I survived but it’s not a happy ending. I was a coward. I went to the war.”
“How to Tell a True War Story” deals with the fog of unreality and how stories of specific incidents are never reliable.
What is and is not a true war story? In the midst of the war stories told in this chapter are interspersed lessons for deciding:
“A true story is never moral… if a story seems moral, do not believe it.”
“You can tell a war story if it embarrasses you…send guys to war and they come home talking dirty.”
“And in the end, really, there's nothing much to say about a true war story, except maybe "Oh."
In the end, this book will make you say, “Oh.”
The book is widely considered one of the best war novels of its time. It was a finalist for both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award. More recently, the book was included among Amazon.com’s “List of 100 Books to Read in a Lifetime.” It was credited as the inspiration for a National Veterans Art Museum exhibit of the same name in Chicago.

Keeping Undesirables Away This Season
Spring has sprung! The possibilities this time of year are endless for those who love gardening and being outdoors. Yes, Mother Nature has a funny way of reminding us who’s in charge though, as April can still bring freezing temperatures across the south east. But while homeowners are busy dusting off patio furniture, mowing lawns and tending to busy bird feeders, the things we don’t enjoy are emerging this time of year too!
With warmer, wetter weather comes mosquitoes, snakes, and deer. Be ready to keep these pests away with these few, simple tasks.
University of Georgia Extension Service and others share the following acronym to help homeowners control wildlife damage. “HERL method includes a step-by-step approach to addressing a damage problem: H - habitat modification or harassment; E - exclusion, including fencing; R - repellent or removal; and, finally, L - lethal control.”
Mosquitoes
Ƚ Control them naturally by making adjustments to the surrounding landscape. Larvae need standing water, so eliminate the water that ponds on tarps, in buckets and pots, or in clogged gutters.
Ƚ For water features like ponds and birdbaths, invest in Mosquito Dunks. They’re safe for birds and fish.
Ƚ Have an oscillating fan running while
enjoying time outdoors.
Ƚ Rather than treating the entire outdoor area indiscriminately, keep repellents like Off, Deet or Skin So Soft on hand.
Ƚ Finally, avoid dark clothing. Yep! Apparently that’s what they’re attracted to. Who knew?!
Snakes
Ƚ They’re going to be active in landscapes near water no matter what, so expect to see them.
Ƚ Know the difference between the ‘good’ guys and the venomous snakes. The four venomous snakes found in this area are copperhead, cottonmouth, coral snake and timber rattlesnake.
Ƚ When working around thick ground cover, water, or brush, make as much noise as possible to scare them away.
Ƚ Eliminate brush, lumber and junk piles near the house and common areas. These places are protected and safe from predators.
Ƚ Eliminate their food source, which may be small rodents. Have an extermination company out to help if rats and mice are a problem.
Ƚ Do NOT toss mothballs outside as repellents! It is a violation of pesticide laws and is therefore illegal, to endanger humans and other mammals outside in this manner.
Deer
Ƚ This is where the HERL method comes in handy! Harassment would include sounds and dogs on the property.
Ƚ Exclusion, which includes fencing, can be costly but is often effective if built tall enough. Recently on my radio show, a wildlife management specialist said to monitor the paths they take through the yard, and keep the plants that they like to browse out of those areas.
Ƚ Many repellents use smell and taste to deter deer. Scented repellents often employ a rotten egg smell or coyote urine. Believe it or not, deer are picky about taste and texture.
Ƚ For a thoughtful list of plants that deer don’t prefer, visit the University of Georgia Extension website, and search “deer” in their publications.

POLLEN
Yuck. It comes in through the window, the window that is open so you can smell the sweet smells of spring.
It comes in on your clothes after working in the garden. It comes in from your garage where it has been hitch hiking on your car for the past 2 weeks.
However it is not the only yuck in your house. Dust, mold, little bugs and other trash can find its way into your vents and settle in your ductwork.
How do you keep your ductwork clean in order to keep that yuck out of the air that you are breathing?
Well, to start with you can change the filter on your furnace on a regular basis. Almost all of the air in your house passes through the filter at some point, keeping the filter clean can help keep your air clean.
But what about cleaning those ducts?
You know they are just loaded with yuck. What’s the deal with duct cleaning?
Here are a couple of things you should know about cleaning your ducts, or as I like to call, ‘Duct Sucking”.
Ƚ Maybe one of the biggest scams in the home services field unfortunately, centers on cleaning your duct work. I am talking about carpet cleaning companies that say they can clean your air ducts for some really cheapo amount – and by the I mean like $49.95 - “As long as we are here” then all they do is vacuum around your registers and if you are lucky they stick the vacuum 2 ft. into your duct.
Ƚ For your information – a good thorough duct cleaning by a professional will run you in your average sized home $500 - $600.
While I don’t generally give out prices here I will in this instance to illustrate A – that it is a serious procedure that calls for serious money and 2 – to show you how ridiculous and how little work or good you will get out of a $49.95 deal.
This is really when you should absolutely have your ducts cleaned:
Ƚ Immediately after you move into a newly built home. Lots of construction debris, saw dust, dry wall scraps, and Doritos bags end up in the duct work of a newly build home.
Ƚ And after that every 4-6 years. Lemme repeat that, every 4-6 YEARS is sufficient.
(This is unless you have someone in the house with breathing problems. If that is the case, then you should get your hvac man/lady out to your house to upgrade your furnace filtration situation. That is money better spent than on a yearly or every two year duct cleaning scam.)
I will repeat: every 4-6 years. The beauty of this is that a good, honest, reputable duct cleaning company will agree that it is not a yearly maintenance project, and that you can go years in between cleanings. One more thing. A quality duct cleaning company will/should clean your drier vents too. Hey - they are also ducts...
If your duct suckers can pass the mustard on all that, you are on to a good one. Get your ducts cleaned. Then do it again.
In 2029.

Waiting to plant until after Easter?
Tax Day may be a better rule of thumb!
Easter’s calendar date is variable, so a better rule of thumb may be to wait to plant sensitive plants until after Tax Day. Spring temperatures in Atlanta are highly variable, and a wise gardener should always note which plants are more cold hardy versus tender during a cold snap.
The old adage “wait to plant until Easter” is usually good advice, however Easter’s calendar date varies year after year -- and some years, it is as early as March 23!
That lines up with the average last spring freeze date for the Atlanta area, but the latest freeze on record did occur on April 25, 1910. With that said, the majority of the killing freezes should be done before April 15, which is Tax Day -- so perhaps that is the better “rule of thumb” date!
WHY THE EXTRA CAUTION AROUND THE SPRING FREEZE?
Often, temperatures will swell in February and March before dropping in early April. This happened in 2007 when temperatures trended well above average in March before crashing into the low to mid 20s in early April.
The April 6-9, 2007 killing freeze arrived just in time for the Easter holiday, when temperatures dropped into the mid 20s as far south as Middle Georgia.
According to NOAA, the Easter 2007 freeze resulted in a state-wide agricultural production value loss of $257.5 million, with peaches, blueberries and apples experiencing the most freeze damage.
