In every organization there are people who are its backbone. They work tirelessly to support the organization in many ways. The Lake Arrowhead LGA has many but there is one person that has been with us through thick and thin and Delores Bennett has been that person for our organization. Known for her perky smile, pink golf balls and of course, her bling, that’s our Dolores. For our final play event in October, the LGA Ladies honored her as “Queen for the Day”. Everyone wore their pink and bling and then decorated Delores’ cart with pink balloons and more bling. She had no idea that we were doing this and was in total surprise when she arrived for the play event. We could not get her out of the car. To make sure that she looked like a queen we presented her with a new pink golf hat complete with bling.
The format the play was a four-person scramble with one pink ball for each team. Each player would alternate each shot using the pink ball. Winners were determined from teams that were able to keep their pink ball and had the lowest score.
Returning to clubhouse following play, Grace Kreft had decorated the tables with arrangements that included photos of Dolores from our LGA photos archive and of course more bling. To complete the meal, we had a cake topped with a tiara for our “Queen for the Day”. It was great fun to be able to surprise her and show our love for her.
We closed the day with awarding the prize money to the two teams with the lowest scores and retaining their pink ball. First place winners were Eleanor Gibbons, Ellen Cahill, Kathy Duerr and Deb Switaski with a score of 36 and

On a final note. The LGA will be having our Fall Business Meeting November 9th with the election of a new Board for 2023-2024. The meeting will be the last scheduled event for the season until we pick up again in the spring with the March kick-off meeting.
For those ladies in the community interested in joining our league, you can go to our website at lakearrowheadlga.com for information and registration.

Mike and Ellen Cahill 2022 THE
ORDER OF ARROWHEAD
Each year, Lake Arrowhead honors one person or couple who embody the spirit of Lake Arrowhead through their service, community involvement, and love of this lake community.
This year, the LAPOA is proud to bestow this honor on Mika and Ellen Cahill, residents of Lake Arrowhead since 2010.
Mike and Ellen have been active leaders in our community. Mike served two terms on the LAPOA Board, working on past committees which included golf, and food and beverage, and continuing to serve on the architecture review committee, as well as the covenants review panel.
Ellen also served on the board, and is a charter member of the LGA, the Lake Arrowhead Ladies Golf Association, which was formed in 2012. Today, she continues to support the LGA with fundraising and donations for the annual Angel House charity event.
Ellen and Mike also work with the Champhill Nine and Dine, a twice monthly get-together with other couples to play nine holes of golf, and then enjoy dinner. Ellen has served as the administrator of Nine and Dine for the past nine years – (coincidence?) - and has helped to grow the group from 15 couples to 110!
Ellen has also helped organize the Annual Christmas party at the club, lending her expertise as a florist to make the clubhouse shine, and has worked with Shepard’s Hook to make blankets for newborns at local hospitals and scarves for our troops overseas.
Before calling Lake Arrowhead home, Mike worked for Delta Airlines as a flight instructor, check airman, and pilot on the Boeing 767-ER, flying international routes. He was also a member of the Georgia National Guard, one of the few who flew all the fighter aircraft assigned to the guard.
Ellen moved to Atlanta in 1981, and was Director of Marketing for an international software company based in Australia. She owned a floral shop in Alpharetta until she met Mike and opted to travel the world with him. Still a habit!
Mike and Ellen are devoted, enthusiastic, involved members of the Lake Arrowhead community, and we congratulate them on their service and this award.

READING FOR THE AGES
Foreign Affairs
Alison Lurie Random House Publishing
by Jeanne Schwartz
Two Americans traveling to England for a research sabbatical: Vinnie Miner, 54, small, plain by her own description, whose work is in children’s nursery rhymes, and who is accompanied on her trip by Fido, an imaginary dog she believes signals self-pity; and Fred Turner, tall, dark, excessively handsome and with a more illustrious remit – studying Thomas Gay.
Vinnie is single, childless, and believes herself to be beyond all the nonsense of relationships, which require conforming, compromise, and commitment. In her youth, she made the “painful error” of allowing herself to care seriously for some of the men in her life. Against her better judgment, she even married one of them who was on “the tearful rebound from a particularly aggravating beauty, and like a waterlogged tennis ball, had rolled into the nearest hole.” Not at all ironically, Vinnie really enjoys sex, but believes those who will engage with her do so out of fondness, not love or attraction.
Fred is married, but his wife Roo stayed at home rather than traveling to England after “ a domestic storm had blown up: thunder, lightning, and a torrential downpour of tears.” He, like Vinnie, holds himself apart from others; in his case because students and faculty alike will try to draw him into relationships. So he is formal, severe.
But that does not prove to be compatible with Roo’s photography, where her marriage to Fred makes him completely accessible to her, a situation which culminates in a photography exhibition that more than intrudes on his privacy and ignites the storm in their marriage.
This Pulitzer Prize winning novel traces the fortunes of the two English Department colleagues as they navigate London life and society. Each meets a new love interest: in Vinnie’s case a folksy sanitary engineer from Tulsa, Oklahoma, and for Fred one of the most beautiful and famous television actresses in England. Their paths cross, of course, as they are colleagues, but neither holds a high regard for the other and they have very different feelings about England, and their place in it.
Vinnie is drawn into a relationship with Chuck Mumpson, the brash yet thoughtful Oklahoman she met on the plane, and he helps to open her eyes to the pretentions of England, a country of “verbal ingenuity, in-group loyalty and cooperation, love of elaborate public performances and
private childishness.” Her sense of appreciation for him grows as her life takes on meaning she had thought long gone.
Fred, meanwhile, is whipsawed by Rosemary, the beautiful actress, who dazzles and dangles him, and whose elusiveness is well known by her circle within London. The more frustrating –and odd – her behavior, the more he is convinced that she is the woman who will make him forget about his wife, with whom he is not in contact. Letters go unanswered, and he comes to believe his salvation lies in Rosemary.
One of the great pleasures in Foreign Affairs is the writing. Alison Lurie paints vivid, laugh out loud descriptions of the characters and the plot lines (one reason this review has so many quotes).
For example, the observation that often, there are few characters over 50 in novels, because:
“In most novels it is taken for granted that people over 50 are as set in their ways as elderly apple trees, and as permanently shaped and scarred by the years they have weathered. The literary convention is that nothing major can happen to them except by subtraction…”
One reviewer said: “So securely fixed are Lurie’s characters at just the right distance between the pathetic and the ridiculous - that we can both like them and laugh at them.” Clear sight and humanity prevail, and it’s a great twisty time getting there. Enjoy.
Alison Lurie was the author of numerous comic novels and children’s stories, as well as a professor at Cornell University – a school reminiscent of the fictional Corinth University in Foreign Affairs. She passed away in December 2020 at the age of 94. Foreign Affairs, winner of the Pultizer Prize, was made into a TV movie in 1993. It starred Joanne Woodward and Brian Dennehy, along with Eric Stoltz.

Green & Growing
The holidays are upon us, and along with traditions with family and friends, you will likely be enjoying some kind of holiday plant.
Many of them can be cared for long past the Christmas season. Here are some common plants associated with this time of year and how to care for them.
ROSEMARY
You know the scent and flavor of Rosemary. It is common for use in meat and vegetable dishes. Its branches can be used as skewers for kabobs, adding flavor to the meat! And its beautiful white and lavender flowers can also be used in prepared dishes. This herb can stay containerized or can be planted in the ground once the chance of frost has passed in early spring. It demands well-drained soil and bright light. You may see Rosemary bushes pruned into a topiary. It is perennial and evergreen, so it always holds on to its leaves.
POINSETTIA
This plant’s bright bracts (“flowers”) add such a nice pop of color to holiday décor. Poinsettias come in many different colors- from cream and pale pink, to red, speckled, and sometimes adorned with glitter! This is not a plant to put out as trash with the Christmas tree. It can be placed outdoors after the last chance of frost, and when happy, grows a few feet high. When kept inside during the holidays, keep Poinsettias away from vents and drafty windows, and make sure the soil doesn’t stay too wet. When you water them, be sure to empty the water settling at the bottom of that foil wrapper they’re often sold in.
HOLIDAY CACTI
Many gardeners have posted beautiful photos to gardening Facebook pages of what they thought were Christmas cacti, but they reported them blooming as early as Halloween. There are many varieties of holiday cacti, but most common are Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. The Thanksgiving cactus is easily determined by the spikes on its leaves.
It is important to keep these outside in the summertime, then bring them back inside when lows get below 50 degrees at night. And as long as there is no patent pending on your variety of cactus, its leaves can be easily rooted in a pot of sand or soilless mix to make a whole new plant.
AMARYLLIS
Breathtaking, big holiday-colored flowers atop a tall stalk, amaryllis are easy plants grown from bulbs. Just place them in front of a bright window, and they’ll show off their large flowers for weeks. They can be kept happy two ways- one is in a short container with marbles or pebbles and just enough water to touch the bottom of the bulb. The other, more traditional way, is potted shallowly in soil. Recently introduced to the consumer market are amaryllis bulbs covered in wax. They are marketed as easy gifts, even for the nongardener, because of not needing water or to be potted.
Looking for cheap and easy ways to decorate in a hurry?
Here
ways to
outside plants as décor this holiday season
1. Obtain the evergreen leaves of Magnolia and holly to adorn centerpieces, swags and more
2. Grapevines or vines of Virginia Creeper make sturdy frames for wreaths
3. Use Rosemary plants as topiaries that could even be decorated
.
4. Frame windows, doors and mantles with fresh Cedar or Fir garlands. According to Pike Nursery, the key to keeping greenery fresh is maintaining moisture. When you get your garland and wreaths home, soak them in cold water over night. Completely submerge them in a large bucket or bathtub. Once the greenery has soaked overnight, let it dry, then spray it with all-natural preservative like Wilt Stop.

GREEN & GROWING
The Home FIX IT
So as the seasons change we are waking up to cooler temperatures. Maybe they aren’t ‘fire up your furnace cold’ enough, but your feet still feel cold, especially sitting at your desk at home or in the office.
You know what that means? That’s correct – it’s space heater time!
However slow your burn a little bit. It’s not that time of year when we should throw all common sense out the window and go with the first space heater we find lying about.
For example, do you know the answer to all these questions when it comes to your space heater? You should.
How old is it? How has it been stored? When was the last time it was used? You’re telling me you just bought a new space heater? You’re saying that you just got one two years ago but it’s been neatly stored in your crawlspace?
Just because your space heater is new, you still need to beware. I wouldn’t use a brand new space heater that smelled funny when I plugged it in let alone one I drug out from my crawlspace where who knows what has been using it for who knows what for who knows how long.
HERE ARE SOME SPACE HEATER POINTERS TO HELP KEEP YOU WARM AND ALIVE WHEN IT IS CHILLY OUTSIDE:
Ƚ Only use space heating equipment that has the UL Mark.
Ƚ Space heaters should be used to only heat spaces, not to dry clothes or heat food.
Ƚ Keep a 3-foot zone around your space heater free of anything flammable.
Ƚ Turn off your space heater when you leave the room or when you go to sleep for the night.
Ƚ Make sure the wiring is sound on your heater and that the connections are tight.
Ƚ When buying a new space heater look for ones with an automatic shut-off feature and with heating element guards.
