This is an integral process in place for checking to be sure all content received has been considered for each particular month's publication. Items sent to any other email address will possibly be omitted.

Note that Lake Arrowhead Living is published monthly (12 issues per year) in an overlapping format that covers 2 months at a time. Magazines generally arrive in mailboxes around mid-month.

For example, the June/July issue will promote late June and July events and will feature articles submitted by May 10th covering happenings that took place in April and May. New content is always due by the 10th of each month to be published in the next month's issue on the following schedule.

Please note that the 10th is a HARD deadline for all content unless previously discussed and planned with the layout designer. This means that if you do not have a standing dedicated section of the magazine, your content is considered "new" and the deadline of the 10th applies. Those with standing dedicated sections have a grace period for submission decided by and agreed upon with their layout designer.

2022 BRIMMER HIGHLANDS CUP The Brimmer Highlands Cup is an event dreamed up by Ward Brimmer and a few other golfers 14 years ago to spice up Lake Arrowhead’s golfing experience through some good-natured competition among Golf Club members. Two golf members have participated in all 14 events, Sandy Reynolds and Rick Salese.

Modeled after the Ryder Cup between U.S. and European golf professionals, the Brimmer Highlands Cup has two captains who are responsible for selecting team members, setting tournament rules, and working with Golf Club management on Tournament details. This year the Red Team captain was Ray Champitto. His Co-Captains were Al Schimmelman and Paul Bolding. The Blue Team captain was Craig Glasgow and his Co-Caption was Lee Heubner. Each team included 19 members.

This year’s event was dedicated to a member that we lost this year, Dave Olsen. We are all saddened by the loss of this fine gentleman, he is gone but not forgotten.

golf news Matches on the first day of competition were played by 2-person teams in three different formats – best ball, alternate shot, and scramble. The Red Team ended the first day of competition with a 16 -11 lead. Second day matches were all singles. The Blue team rallied back with second day results of 12 Blue to 7 resulting in a tie! The Cup was decided by a sudden death playoff on hole 18. Each Captain picked two players to play the 18th hole as a team. The pair with the lowest total net score won the playoff.

The Red Team picked Brian Schell and Bill Maynard. The Blue Team picked Craig Glasgow and Pat Farrelly. The Blue Team won when Pat Farrelly sunk a 6-foot putt for a par on 18. The par gave the Blue Team a combined net score of 10 to the Red’s 11.

In what was obviously a very competitive event, the Blue Team earned bragging rights for the seventh year in a row.

Special thanks to all the staff in the Pro Shop and The Highlands Grill for all they did to help make the Highlands Cup a successful and fun event.

Congratulations to Pat Farrelly for shooting his age on 8-22-22 with a score of 74!

golf news 2022 POINTS CHAMPIONSHIP On Friday September 23, Pat Farrelly defeated Rex Wallace on the last hole to win the 13th annual Points Championship.

This event, which is possibly the most unique and pressure packed tournament of the year. According to the tournament rules, all ten players start at the same time, on the same hole. At the end of each hole, the golfer with the highest score is eliminated from the tournament. If two players tie with the highest score, a chip off is held to determine who advances. The closest to the hole continues unless there are 3 or more players in the chip off. In that case, the player that is farthest from the hole is eliminated.

This process continues for nine holes until only one golfer remains.

Congratulations to all the participants on a great season and qualifying for the Points Championship. Thanks to Golf Professionals Uel Kemp, Deven Broadaway, Aaron Harris and the rest of the club staff for all their hard work. It was a great tournament.

Golf members earn points throughout the year by playing in Club sponsored golf tournaments. They receive 10 points for participating in a tournament but can earn more by winning or finishing at least fourth in a tournament. Ten members qualify to play in the Points Championship.

The format of the Points Championship, known specifically as a “nine hole shoot out” brings a different type of pressure than any other played in Lake Arrowhead. It is, for example, the only one where a high score on a hole can result in elimination from the tournament. In addition, it is the only tournament where family and friends follow along to cheer on their favorite participants. This adds a little extra excitement and pressure for the golfers in that almost every shot draws some type of vocal response from the crowd.

For many of us, these pressures tend to turn our brains into mush, particularly in the early holes where elimination is disappointing.

The first hole saw Ralph Lumpkin eliminated. Eleanor Gibbons was eliminated on 11 in a chip off with Brad Jones.

Hole 12 got TC Chapman. The 13th hole ended Michelle Maynard’s run. She was in a chip off with Brad Jones, Larry Adams and Bill Maynard. The 14th hole saw the elimination of Larry Adams. Brad Jones was the odd player out on hole 15. Bill Maynard was eliminated on hole 16 in a chip off with Pat Farrelly. Paul Bolding was knocked out on the 17th hole in a chip off with Rex Wallace. Pat Farrelly won the final hole, 18, in a chip off with Rex Wallace.

For this 9-hole scramble event, the format for each hole created a new and different challenge for the 2 person teams. Paula Hall and Jan Garbiel developed this fun twisted format….

club business SHORT-TERM RENTAL ORDINANCE CHEROKEE COUNTY, GEORGIA Cherokee County, Georgia has recently adopted an ordinance regarding short-term rentals. The full ordinance is available at ShortTermRentalOrdinanceCherokeeCounty20210806.pdf (cherokeega.com), but we wanted to make each property owner aware of this ordinance and have highlighted a few of the key points in the ordinance.

1. The purpose of the ordinance is to establish standards for short-term rentals of privately-owned residential structures rented to transient occupants, minimize adverse effects of short-term rental uses on surrounding residential neighborhoods, and preserve the character of residential neighborhoods.

2. A certificate is required to lawfully rent, operate, or advertise any property for short-term rental. a. Owners must apply to the Cherokee County Development Services Center on an annual basis for a certificate. b. Certificates require an initial administration fee and annual renewal fees.

3. The Certificate number must be listed in any advertisement for the rental of the property.

4. No short-term rental shall offer more than five (5) bedrooms for rent.

5. The use of outdoor speakers by short-term rentals is prohibited.

6. The number of occupants shall not exceed two persons per bedroom plus two additional persons.

7. The short-term rental must have parking off the street sufficient for one car for each bedroom being rented. Parking shall only be on designated hard surfaced areas.

8. Quiet hours are 12:00 a.m. midnight to 7:00 a.m. daily, 12:00 a.m. midnight Saturday to 1:00 p.m. Sunday).

9. The Cherokee County Marshal’s office (678.493.4080) is tasked with enforcement of the ordinance

Narrows Marina Parking Permits have been mailed to Property Owners who currently lease a Narrows Boatslip. This permit must be placed on the inside windshield. Security looks for these yearly permits when checking the Narrows parking lot. Please register boats and trailers. See Boat Registration information below.

BOAT REGISTRATION Boat registration forms may be downloaded from the website at lakearrowheadclub.net. Proof of liability insurance with limits not less than $300,000 is required for all motorized boats. The speed limit in Lake Arrowhead is 25 mph. Information about the north gate bus stop and traffic flow pattern is available at the north gate. This will help protect your valuables. Valuables left in a vehicle should always be kept out of sight to discourage theft. Our crime rate in Lake Arrowhead is very low so let’s keep it that way- If you see suspicious activity, alert Security or Cherokee 911.

ARCHITECTURAL EXTERIOR WORK POLICY When an Exterior Work Permit is approved, the owner will be sent an 8 ½ x 11 permit that shall be placed in a window on the first floor of the property. The blue permit sign indicates that work on the property was reviewed and approved by the Architectural Review Committee.

SHORT-TERM RENTAL GUIDELINES: PHASE I https://library.municode.com/ga/cherokee_county/ordinances/code_of_ordinances?nodeId=1106313 In order to protect and preserve the residential character, property values, and enjoyment of all homeowners within the Lake Arrowhead community, please observe the following guidelines for relative to short-term property rentals of Lake Arrowhead Phase I units.

1. Short-term property rentals (less than 6 months) are strictly prohibited in both Phase II and Phase III of Lake Arrowhead.

The maximum number of occupants should be restricted to no more than two individuals per bedroom.

2. Short-term rentals should be registered with LA Security gate they intend to enter, and identified as short-term rentals so that the appropriate identification may be provided at check-in a. Amenity use cards, identifying renters and associated unit address b. Vehicle “hang tag” for vehicles 3. All rental agreements should include an acknowledgement that renters have received and agree to abide by the Lake Arrowhead Rules and Regulations a. If boat usage is included with the rental of the home, a printed copy of the lake rules and restrictions should be included with the rental agreement, a copy should be left in the home, and a laminated copy should be placed in the boat and/or attached to the boat key b. Violations of the lake rules and regulations may result in revocation of the issued boat permit and result in suspension of lake access privileges 4. Homeowners are responsible for the actions of guests and renters of their home and violations of the Covenants or Rules and Regulations will typically be handled in the following manner: a. 1st infraction – issuance of written warning to homeowner b. 2nd infraction – 30-day suspension of common property access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters c. 3rd infraction – 12-month suspension of common amenity access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters d. 4th infraction – permanent loss of common amenity access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters e. Addition steps may be taken depending on the nature of the infraction, including contacting the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department or taking additional legal to enforce the community governing documents f. Common property damage by renters, if applicable, will be levied against the lot owner g. Egregious infractions may result in immediate suspension of common property access and privileges or other sanctions 5. “Party Houses” are strictly prohibited and deemed a nuisance and violation of the Lake Arrowhead Covenants, Article III, Section 19. FOOD & BEVERAGE Food and beverages are allowed to be carried onto the Pavilion. No glass bottles or beer kegs are permitted. No grilling or preparation of food is allowed. All trash must be placed in the trash receptacles on the shore.

PERSONAL CHAIRS Property owners are allowed to bring their own folding chairs on to the Pavilion. They must be taken with you when you leave, i.e. chairs cannot be left behind.

ATTIRE Members and guests shall dress in attire befitting the surroundings of the community. Extremely revealing attire, such as a thong, is not suitable for the family atmosphere of the Marina Pavilion.

NO SWIMMING No swimming is permitted from the Marina Pavilion or docks anywhere in the “No Wake” zone. No running or diving is permitted from the Pavilion or docks.

BOATS Boats can tie up on the side of the walkway only where there are cleats and cannot at any time tie up to the Pavilion. Maximum time at the walkway is 1 hour (or 15 minutes if others are waiting). These areas are intended for drop off and pickup.

hough we are still sweating out this summer heat, fall is certainly on its way! I’ve noticed that the colorful crape myrtle blooms and sunflowers have started to fade, so without even looking at the calendar, I know cooler temperatures and a whole new set of colors are not far off. And September ushers in the start of college football! So what does football have to do with gardening?

For my radio show just a couple of months ago, I interviewed a plant expert with the Southern Living Plant Collection. We had a great discussion about charcuterie boards and ways you can provide some of your own ingredients! Step up your tailgate game and impress your friends with homegrown food!

Kip McConnell, the business development director for Southern Living Plant Collection, had me excited about using figs from an easy to grow, dwarf fig bush aptly named ‘Little Miss Figgy’. Kip says to also consider including herbs like winter-hardy rosemary and lavender, which “add that look and fragrance that makes the experience that much better.” All of these can be grown in pots on the patio or balcony, for easy access and noticeable fragrance. When planting herbs, make sure they get lots of sun, and be sure to use a well-draining potting soil that doesn’t stay too soggy.

Don’t forget blueberries, raspberries and blackberries. Though these were likely harvested from June through August, they

store well in a container in the freezer. Toss them on the charcuterie board, or drop them in a drink to add sweetener naturally.

If football and growing your own foods aren’t your thing, how about these autumn activities? Fall is a spectacular time of year to visit local vineyards! With the gradual change in climate, many have started up even closer to metro Atlanta. But traveling out to the reaches of North Georgia to towns like Ellijay, Jasper and Dahlonega still make for a great weekend road trip! While sipping that glass of vino, venture out to the vineyards, learn about the growing habits of the vines, the grapes and how they’re harvested! Most winery owners are happy to share their stories.

Apple picking season is upon us! Families again flock to North Georgia to load up on this favorite fall fruit. For a list of fantastic Georgia farms to visit, stop over at the Georgia Agritourism website, complete with an interactive map to help plan the trip.

To compliment those trips to North Georgia wineries and orchards, the guys may want to stop by any number of breweries that have established themselves all around metro Atlanta! Many hobbyist brewers have struck gold starting businesses where people flock to enjoy different beer flavors and each other’s company outdoors, often with pets and children in tow! The best climate to grow hops is typically considered

to be the Pacific Northwest, however, Georgia Gardener Walter Reeves hears from gardeners all across Atlanta who grow their own hops. They all recommend growing them trellised because they’ll quickly scale 8-10 feet high and in an area that receives six plus hours of sunlight a day. One grower says they’ll perform well planted in a raised bed or mounded, which provides “cool roots and hot leaves”.

My name is Carey Burns, and I’m excited to announce my candidacy for the open Board Position. I’m looking forward to working harmoniously with other board members, volunteers and management in any every effort to keep LA a great place to live. Appreciation for the unique qualities that gathered us here ll here. We can all agree that those qualities and their value should be protected. I have no doubt in my ability to work cordially with other members, volunteers, and management, while also making sure to represent a variety of interests. I have previously held positions as Community Liaison and Recreation Director in previous neighborhoods we resided.

Professionally, my background includes corporate hospitality, real estate, law, insurance, and county government. I currently serve my community by working at Northside Cherokee Hospital.

Our story began a new chapter when we made an offer on a property in Phase I, on New Year’s Day last year. My husband, Mike, and I started a search to move in early 2021. We are both from Atlanta, raised in Cobb County, and moved to Cherokee for our kids to attend Cherokee County Schools. As my career as a stay-at-home mom allowed free time, I enrolled and graduated from Reinhardt University.

My son attended Reinhardt, and my daughter is currently a freshman.

My husband Mike’s background is in Construction Management. He has managed large, single, and multi-family residential communities in Cherokee County. We live with Leo, our siamese cat, Millie, a Russian blue mix, and Pepita, a chihuahua mix rescue.

One of the toughest issues for communities everywhere is the shortterm rental issue. We are at a point in time when there is a great opportunity to work together to ensure the value and integrity of our community. I am confident in my ability to plan, understand budgets, deal with disputes, carry out ideas and listen to suggestions. My biggest goal for the community is that we have an accessible process to ensure we listen and make sure everyone feels heard. Serving others, translating messages, advocating for customers, carrying out orders, and managing information quickly is something I already do when I clock in four days a week for a large organization that plays a massive economic role in our County. I am happy to apply my skills for the benefit of LA and hopefully, we can motivate many others to follow.

Steve Alred My wife and i have recently moved into the community. I have been retired since July 2019. I founded/owned Southern Keyboards, Inc., a Piano and Organ Company in Atlanta in 1977. We were one of the largest P&O dealers in the country.

After selling the business in 1995, I focused my energy on a business i had started in I994, MarketLink Services, Inc., a full service marketing, sales, advertising and consulting group connecting dealers and manufacturers of pianos with over 200 universities and school systems with a piano "loan/sell" program.

Concurrently my wife (and i) owned and operated child care centers for over 25 years.

In 1998, I answered an early call late in life to the ministry. I began pastoring as I spent the next 7 summers at Duke Divinity School and Candler School of Theology. My last 20 years of employment were as a pastor in the Methodist Church.

I have also "worked" as a professional musician.

My retirement "career" is serving on the Advisory Board of Venezuela Now, Inc. Our ministry supports Seminario Wesleyano de Venezuela and five Wesley Medical.Clinics in Venezuela. My primary function is fundraising for the Seminary.

My wife and I enjoy music, reading, travel, camping, and grandchildren. Our business, missions, and vacation travel has taken us pretty much around the world. Now we are settled into this beautiful, and so far, friendly community of LA. We moved here from LA (Lower Acworth).

I married Constance W Martin on November22, 1975. I lived, worked and retired in Bradenton until May 2021, at which time we moved to Lake Arrowhead, where we now reside.

I graduated from high school in 1964 and attended Manatee Junior College obtaining a 2-year degree.

I retired as a civilian (non-law enforcement) from the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office at the age of 66 after 17 years of service as the Director of Fleet services, in charge of a 1000-unit fleet.

This position required me to create and manage a budget of approximately 4 million dollars, manage the repair shop, track history and replace units as needed.

Before the Sheriffs Office, I worked for United Parcel Service starting out as a fleet mechanic and reaching the position of fleet supervisor where I prepared budgets, managed people and maintained a portion of the delivery fleet. At UPS I attended several Fleet management schools.

I like traveling with my wife and cat in our RV (when gas prices allow), building and flying radio-controlled airplanes. I am involved in the Lake Arrowhead CERT “Community Emergency Response Team”. I am a trained National Weather Service severe weather spotter “Skywarn”.

Eileen Oberg I have been a resident of Lake Arrowhead for 6 years and been a member of the Board of Directors in charge of fundraising since 2020.

The fundraising committee and I have been successful in 2 annual shredding events. We have increased sales of the annual Christmas ornament by 30% in this time. The committee also took over the annual Christmas Party at The Clubhouse.

The Committee and I have made great strides in new ways to raise funds for the Board's expenses.

Jay Caldwell was born and raised in Massachusetts. He got entirely sick of the snow and gray winters and moved down to Georgia in 2007 and has never looked back. A former insurance professional for over fifteen years, he made a career change in 2014 to enter the IT space in Quality Assurance. He now manages a QA department for a startup company. Jay works from home, and is a full time resident of Lake Arrowhead. He has previously co-ran a volunteer community theatre company for 11 years and has a wealth of experience in event planning, volunteer coordination and more. Jay and his spouse Rhonda, are new additions to Lake Arrowhead as of January 2022 but already in love with their mountain community here.

Robert McGurk My wife and I purchased property in Lake Arrowhead in 2012, and have been full time residents since 2014.

I’m a retired executive from Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. with extensive budget and management experience.

I’m active in the community with the Men’s Golf Association, and support a variety of local charities including the Kathy B Davis Foundation and Angel House and I have served on the LAPOA Election and Nominating Committees and the Golf Committee.

I’m running for a position on the Board because I believe in this community. I am familiar with the history of Lake Arrowhead and know what the LAPOA Board can and cannot do and as a result, I believe I bring a realistic approach to the position. I know for example, the Covenants should be updated, but cannot be eliminated and while unpopular, our POA dues must increase with inflation to avoid the trap we were in a few years ago with not enough money to provide adequate necessary services. Working with the Declarant is a negotiation, not a rubber stamp of approval because historically, not all of the development ideas have been in the best interest of LAPOA and not all the projects undertaken have been effectively managed. The Home FIX IT Here are 5 Things that are commonly wrong when your Heating and Air system goes on the fritz: A note – these are 5 major offenders when your a/c or furnace quits working. As we are headed into the change of season, your system may need a tune-up and you may hear these phrases tossed about.

It is not an end-all beat-all list, but these are likely culprits. Listen for your HVAC company to use these words and here is what they mean…

“IT’S TURNED OFF.”

Hopefully you won’t actually have a service tech out to your house to tell you this.

Your hvac system has an on/off switch by the unit. It looks like a light switch. In a weak moment you might mindlessly walk out and flip it off thinking it is a light. It happens more than you think. Simply flip it back on and the system will re-start.

“IT’S A CAPACITOR.”

Not a flux-capacitor, but your outside unit has a capacitor in it the size of a Coke can’ish. When it goes, your air conditioner is done until repaired. You will still feel air out your vents, although it will be room temperature air, but your outside unit will not be running (and thus the motor will be getting warm). I repeat, your outside unit will NOT be running at all.

For this one I would call a pro. It’s a quick fix for them because there is a great chance that they carry this part on their truck. It’s worth it.

“IT’S YOUR COMPRESSOR.”

Often proceeded by a high squealing sound.

When your compressor goes bad you are through getting cool air until a pro can install a new one.

Hopefully you won’t actually have a service tech out to your house to tell you this either.

Once again you may still be feeling air blowing from your vents, but it will be room temperature, or outdoor temperature air.

Often a programmable thermostat, which runs on batteries, will shut down your system when the batteries for the thermostat are dead. Been there. Seen that.

More than once.

If the compressor is malfunctioning, it won’t be able to turn the refrigerant gas into a liquid – a vital step towards allowing it to cool the air. (Or rather if you will, removing the hot air from your inside air.)

Pop the thermostat off the wall and replace batteries. Probably AA sized. Probably needs 3. You can probably only find two.

This is a much bigger job than the capacitor is. This is why there are HVAC companies. If you don’t have a good one, call me and I will hook you up with one.

“IT’S YOUR THERMOSTAT.”

Pop the thermostat back on and all should start back up and be right with the world.

It may also still under warranty, which would be nice.

“YOU ARE LOW ON REFRIGERANT.”

Ahhh, the dreaded refrigerant leak. This is often evidenced by the ice on your indoor unit.

Yes, it does sound backwards, but not enough refrigerant causes ice and no cool air.

This can be an absolute pain in the neck as refrigerant leaks can be difficult ($$) to find and to fix.

You cannot do this yourself as you need to be certified to buy it and trap the old refrigerant so it does not get released into the atmosphere.

Do NOT use the refrigerant for a car in your home system. Yes – I am looking at you Mr. Steve my next door neighbor.

ONE MORE THING…

If your unit stops running, the A-number one thing to do is to change your filter. An especially dirty filter could be a cause of everything. A clean filter in place will restart the system without a call to a pro.

community interest JIM LINDENMAYER: CHEROKEE COUNTY FIRST CITIZEN AWARDEE Many of you have probably heard of Jim and Margo Lindenmayer and the Homeless Veterans Golf Tournament Jim organizes annually in Lake Arrowhead. Fewer may know of Jim’s accomplishments for Cherokee County Veterans and awards he has received for his timeless efforts in assisting Veterans.

Recently I learned that Jim received the 2021 Cherokee County First Citizen’s Award. That’s impressive, but Jim’s accomplishments leading to the honor of this prestigious award are awe-inspiring: Jim graduated from West Point in 1980 with a BS in Chemical Engineering He served in the Army, Armored Calvary Branch, holding various command and staff positions at both Troop and Squadron levels. Upon resigning active duty, he continued in service in the Army Reserves until 1989. At separation, his rank was Captain.

While preparing to retire from the private sector in 2014 he was seeking a retirement project that could make a difference in people’s lives and hold his enthusiasm and interest. While working on his Father’s VA claim, Jim became curious about the problems Military Veterans face and began researching Veterans issues. His research showed there were many Vets in the County that needed various kinds of help.

Jim had found his retirement project, officially launching the Cherokee County Homeless Veteran’s Program (CCHVP) on Veterans Day 2014.

His program not only helps homeless Veterans, but also focuses on preventing homelessness. It assists Veterans who are in financial straits, disabled, elderly or suffering emotional distress.

It’s not uncommon for Veterans to be plagued by combinations of problems.

CCHVP has evolved under Jim’s leadership to offer assistance including: • Short-Term Housing • Food • Clothing • Furniture • Toiletries • Donated Vehicles • Veteran Claims Assistance • Veteran Home Repair Program partnered with Home Depot And Habitat For Humanity • Veteran Fly Fishing Program To date, CCHVP has helped over 2,000 Veterans, and in some cases their families, too.

In addition to serving as CCHVP Program Director, Jim remains engaged with statewide efforts to help Veterans through the Georgia Department of Community Affairs. He’s consulted on Veterans issues with local, State and Federal government officials, including Congressman Barry Loudermilk.

Significantly, Governor Brian Kemp appointed Jim a Board Member to the Georgia Home Trust for Homelessness.

As a Veteran, himself, Jim has been an active member and officer of the American Legion for 25 plus years.

He has received multiple awards for his dedication, efforts and successes, helping others in need.

The Code Breaker: Jennifer Doudna, Gene Editing, and The Future of the Human Race Walter Isaacson Simon & Schuster The title is intimidating. The subject matter is scientific. You will probably learn more about bacteria, viruses, mutations, enzymes, DNA and messenger RNA than you have ever known before, or care to.

But you’ll also learn about the culture of scientific discovery, the unique blend of cooperation and competition that exists in the world of science, the thrill of discovery, and the mind-boggling applications of those discoveries.

And the majority of the last third of the book is devoted to the ethical questions and how debate has emerged and continues around the question: “Just because we can do something, does that mean we should?”

Jennifer Doudna, the scientist at the center of the book, grew up in Hilo, Hawaii, where she spent most of her time in nature, observing phenomena like the plant she named “sleeping grass” because whenever someone touches it, it curls up. She wondered why. Her father gave her the book The Double Helix, and she learned about gene structure; and in her early days as a scientist the mapping of the human genome. As she gravitated towards a life in the lab, her wide-ranging interests and ability to make connections gave her the talent of innovation, where her curiosity and experimentation showed her this: DNA, which everyone talks about and knows about, doesn’t actually do anything; it just sits there in the cell. It is RNA which does the work. RNA travels and facilitates the assembly of specific proteins.

Experimentation with these dynamics led to the invention of CRISPR, one of the most important discoveries of our time.

Messenger RNA or mRNA, was on display to all of us as she and her collaborators created the first COVID tests and then shared CRISPR with Pfizer and Moderna, which they used to create the mRNA COVID vaccines.

The book’s author believes that the invention of CRISPR (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats, if you must know) and the plague of COVID will “hasten our transition to the third great revolution of modern times.

These revolutions arose from the discovery, beginning just over a century ago, of the atom, the bit, and the gene.”

These have come together as coders move to biochemistry, and we suddenly find ourselves in a world where we can edit genes, not just somatically – meaning in one person for one purpose – but in what is called germline editing – making genetic edits that would be inherited.

A variety of thought experiments are offered up to consider when germline editing might be used for different conditions: including Huntington’s Disease, Sickle Cell Anemia, Deafness, Muscles and Sports, Cognitive Skills.

And the question: “Who should decide?”

Quoting from the book: “In the upcoming decades, as we gain more power to hack our own evolution, we will have to wrestle with deep moral and spiritual questions: Is there an inherent goodness to nature? Is there a virtue that arises from accepting what is gifted to us [in terms of height, intelligence hearing or vision abilities?] Will an emphasis on personal liberty turn the most fundamental aspects of human nature into consumer choices made at a genetic supermarket? Should the rich be able to buy the best genes? …Then again, why in the world would we not seize the benefits that will come from ridding our species of dangerous diseases and enhancing the capacities of our children?”

However and by whom those questions are answered, Jennifer Doudna and her friend and collaborator, the French scientist Emmanuelle Charpentier were awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2020 for their remarkable achievements in developing CRISPR, and with it, the world’s ability to further develop scientific discoveries and applications that will aid medicine and health.

The book is long, but worth it.

One of the things that makes this challenging book easier to digest and relate to is that the author has included color photographs every 20 pages or so.
