This is an integral process in place for checking to be sure all content received has been considered for each particular month's publication. Items sent to any other email address will possibly be omitted. Note that Lake Arrowhead Living is published monthly (12 issues per year) in an overlapping format that covers 2 months at a time. Magazines generally arrive in mailboxes around mid-month. For example, the June/July issue will promote late June and July events and will feature articles submitted by May 10th covering happenings that took place in April and May. New content is always due by the 10th of each month to be published in the next month's issue on the following schedule. Please note that the 10th is a HARD deadline for all content unless previously discussed and planned with the layout designer. This means that if you do not have a standing dedicated section of the magazine, your content is considered "new" and the deadline of the 10th applies. Those with standing dedicated sections have a grace period for submission decided by and agreed upon with their layout designer. LAKE ARROWHEAD GOLF TRIP TO NORTHERN IRELAND AND SCOTLAND June 5 – 16, 2022 a group of 18 Lake Arrowhead residents and friends took a golf trip to N. Ireland and Scotland. We had 10 golfers and 8 non-golfers. The trip was two years in the planning. The travelers included: Robert & Gail McGurk, Bob & Gail Gusick, David Davis & Roz Waldron, Uel & Laura Kemp, Scott & Paula Hall, Mike & Lorrie Heath, Brad & Diana Sweetwood, Don Cordell & Kelly Rademacher, and Mac & Deirdre MacDonald.

We all met at the Dublin airport on June 5th. The group was picked up by our bus driver for the 2-hour drive to the village of Portrush in Northern Ireland. We stopped along the way in Belfast for lunch and a two hour visit at the Titanic Museum. The Titanic was built in the shipyard at the Belfast port. It was fascinating to see the history of the most famous ship in the world!

Wednesday June 8th, we played one of the most underrated courses that I’ve ever played, Portstewart Golf Club. It is ranked #73 in Great Britain and Ireland by Golf Digest. The

Monday June 6th was spent seeing the Giant’s Causeway and playing Royal Portrush. The Giant’s Causeway is an amazing volcanic rock outcropping. It is where the album cover for Led Zeppelin’s Houses of the Holy was photographed. Royal Portrush is the eight ranked course in the world outside the USA by Golf Digest magazine. It hosted the Open Championship, won by Shane Lowry, in 2019. It will host the 2025 Open Championship as well. It PAGE 10 | SEPTEMBER // OCTOBER 2022

Tuesday June 7th, we played Royal Portrush again. The non-golfers toured the town of Portrush. I love the town of Portrush! The scenery is outstanding and the people are very accommodating. One day I would like to do a trip just to Portrush. There are several other great courses in the town and within a 45-minute drive.

golf news front nine is one of the most beautiful I have ever played. We were constantly playing between the dunes. I’m not a good enough writer to put my feelings into words. The back nine is a very traditional links layout. Reviews don’t give the back nine it’s justice because everything pales in comparison to the front nine. Today was very windy! 30+ mph at times. The winds made the course play very difficult. After golf, the group got together for dinner at Harbor Bistro restaurant right on the Portrush harbor.

Thursday June 9th, was a travel day to Newcastle N. Ireland. We stopped and toured Dunluce Castle on the way. Dunluce is one of the most picturesque and romantic of Irish Castles. With evidence of settlement from the first millennium, the present castle ruins date mainly from the 16th and 17th centuries. It was inhabited by both the feuding McQuillan and MacDonnell clans. We stopped in Belfast for lunch and a short walk around the downtown area. We stayed at a fabulous hotel, Slieve Donard! I posted on my Facebook page, “You know you are at a nice place when you see two Rolls Royce’s parked out front!” We had another group dinner at Villa Vicci Italian restaurant in Newcastle. Friday June 10th, we spent the morning walking around the town of Newcastle. If you are a Game of Thrones fan, there are several film locations in this area. Several tour operators offer trips to the locations. In the afternoon we played Royal County Down. Golf Digest ranks this the number 1 course in the world outside the USA! It is one of my favorite courses. This is the second time our group has played it. It never disappoints. This was our third trip to the British Isles and we have had great weather every time. Our luck finally ran out. It was hailing 13 minutes before we teed off! By the time we teed off, it

golf news Tuesday June 14th, today we played the historic Royal Troon Golf Club. The course has hosted 9 Open Championships dating back to 1923! The list of champions includes the likes of Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson, Justin Leonard, Bobby Locke, and Tom Weiskopf. The most recent Open, 2016, was the site of the epic duel between Phil Mickelson and winner, Henrik Stenson. It is home to one of the most famous par threes’ in the world. Number 8 known as the Postage Stamp, due to the tiny green that is surrounded by slopes and bunkers.

had quit raining and the sun was out. There was standing water on the first tee and green. The course absorbed it all before we completed the second hole. We were in and out of our rain gear 4 different times on the front nine! The wind was howling, rain, and sun all on the front nine. When made the turn the rain stopped and the sun came out but the wind did not slow down. It was quite the challenge but very rewarding. Saturday June 11th, was an adventure! I’m sure you all have read about flight cancelations and stranded passengers over the last few months, well we were no exception. Our connecting flight from Belfast to Glasgow was canceled late Thursday. We spent a few hours scrambling to find alternate transportation. The group ended up taking a ferry from Belfast to Cairnryan Scotland. We then took a bus to Inverness and the Kingsmill Hotel. Sunday June 12th, the golfers took a bus ride an hour north of Inverness to play the third ranked course in the world, Royal Dornoch. What a gem! Royal Dornoch was designed by Old Tom Morris and his under study was Donald Ross. Donald Ross is responsible for designing 413 courses including Pinehurst #2 in North Carolina, Seminole in Florida, and Oakland Hills in Michigan. Tom Watson says the toughest second shot in golf is the second shot on the par three number 2 at Royal Dornoch! This course had the toughest set of par threes I’ve ever played on one course. None of them were over 170 yards but extreme precision is required. The winds blew but the sun was out all day. The non-golfers took a guided tour of Lock Ness. Once again, Nessie did not make an appearance. Monday June 13th, the golfers played Castle Stuart. Castle Stuart is ranked 72 in the world. It opened in 2009 along the Moray Firth. The course was designed by renowned golf architect Gil Hanse. It looks like it has been there for 100 years. The natural beauty and flow of the land make for a beautiful setting. The non-golfers toured the city of Inverness and went in search of the famous Highlands cattle.After golf, we traveled to the quaint seaside town of Troon and the famous South Beach Hotel. The walls of the hotel were covered in pictures of some of their more famous guests. PAGE 12 | SEPTEMBER // OCTOBER 2022

The non-golfers toured the town of Troon and took a trip to Dundonald Castle. On top of the prominent hill at Dundonald sits a stone castle built around 1371. Its first owner was Robert II, grandson of Robert the Bruce and founder of the Stewart royal dynasty. He built the castle soon after he came to the throne, and died there in 1390. The castle continued to serve as a noble residence – but generally not a royal one – until the 1590s. By this date the then lairds, the Wall aces of Dundonald, had moved to nearby Auchans Castle. Robert II wasn’t the first to build a castle on the hill, however. His ancestor, Walter, Steward of Scotland, built the earliest castle there in the mid-1100s. And archaeologists have discovered signs of settlement from even long before then. Wednesday June 15th, in the morning we made our way down to the fabulous Trump Turnberry resort. A true 5-star hotel and experience! In the afternoon the golfers played the famous Alisa Course at Turnberry. The course has hosted 4 Open Championships. The winners include Tom Watson in the famous duel in the sun besting Jack Nicklaus by a single stroke. Nick Price, Greg Norman and Stewart Cink round out the champions. It is the 13th ranked course in the world by Golf Digest. Some publications rank it as the number one course in Scotland! It is a spectacular layout. My highlight of the trip was my hole in one on #15! What a way to end trip and the last par three we played! Some of the non-golfers walked the course with us and others took advantage of the spa at the hotel. Thursday June 16th, marked the day that the majority of the group returned home. A few fortunate travelers stayed a couple of extra days and traveled on their own.

golf news The trip was fantastic! Some of the best golf courses in the world, beautiful scenery, good food, and good accommodations. Scotland is one of my favorite places in the world. Watch your email for the details of our upcoming trips. We are scheduled for travel to France and Italy in June of 2023. The next Scottish adventure will be to St. Andrews and Edinburgh in 2024. We will play The Old Course, Carnoustie, Muirfield, and North Berwick as well as others to be decided. This trip will fill up fast!

golf news 2022 CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP We had 36 competitors in 3 flights: Championship, Senior, and Ladies. Trophies were given for the Low Gross and Low Net scores in each flight. The overall Club Champion and Championship Flight winner, for the eighth year in a row, was Brian Schell. The Ladies Champion was Michelle Maynard. Bill Maynard defended his title as the Senior Club Champion. Eleanor Gibbons had a hole in one on number 7 in Sunday’s round! Congratulations to all the winners! Nine teams of two headed out for the 2-person 9-hole scramble on a very hot and humid day, but the weather did not curb the teams’ enthusiasm! The ladies showed up to display their polka dots for good luck to hit ‘em straight and putt well. Team scores were tallied and winners awarded..see team the leaderboard scores:

club business SHORT-TERM RENTAL ORDINANCE CHEROKEE COUNTY, GEORGIA Cherokee County, Georgia has recently adopted an ordinance regarding short-term rentals. The full ordinance is available at ShortTermRentalOrdinanceCherokeeCounty20210806.pdf (cherokeega.com), but we wanted to make each property owner aware of this ordinance and have highlighted a few of the key points in the ordinance. 1. The purpose of the ordinance is to establish standards for short-term rentals of privately-owned residential structures rented to transient occupants, minimize adverse effects of short-term rental uses on surrounding residential neighborhoods, and preserve the character of residential neighborhoods. 2. A certificate is required to lawfully rent, operate, or advertise any property for short-term rental. a. Owners must apply to the Cherokee County Development Services Center on an annual basis for a certificate. b. Certificates require an initial administration fee and annual renewal fees. 3. The Certificate number must be listed in any advertisement for the rental of the property. 4. No short-term rental shall offer more than five (5) bedrooms for rent. 5. The use of outdoor speakers by short-term rentals is prohibited. 6. The number of occupants shall not exceed two persons per bedroom plus two additional persons. 7. The short-term rental must have parking off the street sufficient for one car for each bedroom being rented. Parking shall only be on designated hard surfaced areas. 8. Quiet hours are 12:00 a.m. midnight to 7:00 a.m. daily, 12:00 a.m. midnight Saturday to 1:00 p.m. Sunday). 9. The Cherokee County Marshal’s office (678.493.4080) is tasked with enforcement of the ordinance

Narrows Marina Parking Permits have been mailed to Property Owners who currently lease a Narrows Boatslip. This permit must be placed on the inside windshield. Security looks for these yearly permits when checking the Narrows parking lot. Please register boats and trailers. See Boat Registration information below. BOAT REGISTRATION Boat registration forms may be downloaded from the website at lakearrowheadclub.net. Proof of liability insurance with limits not less than $300,000 is required for all motorized boats. club business SECURITY UPDATE We hope everyone is enjoying the summer. Since School has begun we have a lot of children walking to and from the north gate bus stop. Please drive responsibly. The speed limit in Lake Arrowhead is 25 mph. Information about the north gate bus stop and traffic flow pattern is available at the north gate. Lock your home and vehicles even when you are away for a moment. This will help protect your valuables. Valuables left in a vehicle should always be kept out of sight to discourage theft. Our crime rate in Lake Arrowhead is very low so let’s keep it that way- If you see suspicious activity, alert Security or Cherokee 911. Let’s all help keep our community safe. ARCHITECTURAL EXTERIOR WORK POLICY When an Exterior Work Permit is approved, the owner will be sent an 8 ½ x 11 permit that shall be placed in a window on the first floor of the property. The blue permit sign indicates that work on the property was reviewed and approved by the Architectural Review Committee.

SHORT-TERM RENTAL GUIDELINES: PHASE I https://library.municode.com/ga/cherokee_county/ordinances/code_of_ordinances?nodeId=1106313 In order to protect and preserve the residential character, property values, and enjoyment of all homeowners within the Lake Arrowhead community, please observe the following guidelines for relative to short-term property rentals of Lake Arrowhead Phase I units. 1. Short-term property rentals (less than 6 months) are strictly prohibited in both Phase II and Phase III of Lake Arrowhead. The maximum number of occupants should be restricted to no more than two individuals per bedroom. 2. Short-term rentals should be registered with LA Security gate they intend to enter, and identified as short-term rentals so that the appropriate identification may be provided at check-in a. Amenity use cards, identifying renters and associated unit address b. Vehicle “hang tag” for vehicles 3. All rental agreements should include an acknowledgement that renters have received and agree to abide by the Lake Arrowhead Rules and Regulations a. If boat usage is included with the rental of the home, a printed copy of the lake rules and restrictions should be included with the rental agreement, a copy should be left in the home, and a laminated copy should be placed in the boat and/or attached to the boat key b. Violations of the lake rules and regulations may result in revocation of the issued boat permit and result in suspension of lake access privileges 4. Homeowners are responsible for the actions of guests and renters of their home and violations of the Covenants or Rules and Regulations will typically be handled in the following manner: a. 1st infraction – issuance of written warning to homeowner b. 2nd infraction – 30-day suspension of common property access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters c. 3rd infraction – 12-month suspension of common amenity access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters d. 4th infraction – permanent loss of common amenity access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters e. Addition steps may be taken depending on the nature of the infraction, including contacting the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department or taking additional legal to enforce the community governing documents f. Common property damage by renters, if applicable, will be levied against the lot owner g. Egregious infractions may result in immediate suspension of common property access and privileges or other sanctions 5. “Party Houses” are strictly prohibited and deemed a nuisance and violation of the Lake Arrowhead Covenants, Article III, Section 19. Party Houses are also prohibited by popular short-term rental companies (Airbnb and VRBO) and nuisance properties will be reported to the appropriate listing entity. club business MARINA PAVILION RULES AND REGULATIONS: HOURS OF OPERATION The Marina Pavilion will be open dawn to dusk or during sanctioned LAYCC events. FOOD & BEVERAGE Food and beverages are allowed to be carried onto the Pavilion. No glass bottles or beer kegs are permitted. No grilling or preparation of food is allowed. All trash must be placed in the trash receptacles on the shore. PERSONAL CHAIRS Property owners are allowed to bring their own folding chairs on to the Pavilion. They must be taken with you when you leave, i.e. chairs cannot be left behind. ATTIRE Members and guests shall dress in attire befitting the surroundings of the community. Extremely revealing attire, such as a thong, is not suitable for the family atmosphere of the Marina Pavilion. NO SWIMMING No swimming is permitted from the Marina Pavilion or docks anywhere in the “No Wake” zone. No running or diving is permitted from the Pavilion or docks. NO FISHING No fishing is allowed from the Marina Pavilion or docks. BOATS Boats can tie up on the side of the walkway only where there are cleats and cannot at any time tie up to the Pavilion. Maximum time at the walkway is 1 hour (or 15 minutes if others are waiting). These areas are intended for drop off and pickup. PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES No grilling, skateboarding, bicycles, rollerblading, sunbathing, or feeding the wildlife is permitted on the Marina Pavilion or docks. PETS Pets are not allowed on the Marina Pavilion.

PICKLEBALL Want to learn the fastest growing sport in the USA? Come join us at the Red Cloud Pickleball and Tennis Center and LEARN TO PLAY PICKLEBALL!! No need to bring a paddle at first– just show up and we’ll help you learn! It’s great exercise, lots of fun and adults of all ages can play! We currently have over 40 active LA Residents participating and 9 players just competed in the Pickleball USA Atlantic South Diamond Regional, winning a number of medals! You don’t need to have tennis or other sports experience to play this great game. We play in a doubles format and our current age range of players is from 25 to 90! We love to compete with each other but the courts are filled with laughter as we support each other’s mistakes and cheer each other’s winning shots! So, give it a try! The only requirements are that you are 18 or older and live in Lake Arrowhead. We have divided our players into two groups - Novice and Advanced. The Novice Players (beginners and intermediates) play on Mondays at 9:00am, Wednesdays at 5:00pm and Saturdays at 9:00am. The Advanced Players meet on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays at 4pm. STEVE ALRED My wife and i have recently moved into the community. I have been retired since July 2019. I founded/owned Southern Keyboards, Inc., a Piano and Organ Company in Atlanta in 1977. We were one of the largest P&O dealers in the country. After selling the business in 1995, I focused my energy on a business I had started in I994, MarketLink Services, Inc., a full service marketing, sales, advertising and consulting group connecting dealers and manufacturers of pianos with over 200 universities and school systems with a piano "loan/ sell" program.Concurrently my wife (and I) owned and operated child care centers for over 25 years. In 1998, I answered an early call late in life to the ministry. I began pastoring as I spent the next 7 summers at Duke Divinity School and Candler School of Theology. My last 20 years of employment were as a pastor in the Methodist Church. I have also "worked" as a professional musician. My retirement "career" is serving on the Advisory Board of Venezuela Now, Inc. Our ministry supports Seminario Wesleyano de Venezuela and five Wesley Medical Clinics in Venezuela. My primary function is fundraising for the Seminary. My wife and I enjoy music, reading, travel, camping, and grandchildren. Our business, missions, and vacation travel has taken us pretty much around the world. Now we are settled into this beautiful, and so far, friendly community of LA. We moved here from LA (Lower Acworth). If the powers-that-be feel that my experience would be usefull I would give consideration to bringing "new blood" to the table.

I lived, worked and retired in Bradenton until May 2021, at which time we moved to Lake Arrowhead, where we now reside. I graduated from high school in 1964 and attended Manatee Junior College obtaining a 2-year degree. I retired as a civilian (non-law enforcement) from the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office at the age of 66 after 17 years of service as the Director of Fleet services, in charge of a 1000-unit fleet. This position required me to create and manage a budget of approximately 4 million dollars, manage the repair shop, track history and replace units as needed. Before the Sheriffs Office, I worked for United Parcel Service starting out as a fleet mechanic and reaching the position of fleet supervisor where I prepared budgets, managed people and maintained a portion of the delivery fleet. At UPS I attended several Fleet management schools. I like traveling with my wife and cat in our RV (when gas prices allow), building and flying radio-controlled airplanes. I am involved in the Lake Arrowhead CERT “Community Emergency Response Team”. I am a trained National Weather Service severe weather spotter “Skywarn”.

community interest EILEEN OBERG I have been a resident of Lake Arrowhead for 6 years and been a member of the Board of Directors in charge of fundraising since 2020. The fundraising committee and I have been successful in 2 annual shredding events. We have increased sales of the annual Christmas ornament by 30% in this time. The committee also took over the annual Christmas Party at The Clubhouse. The Committee and I have made great strides in new ways to raise funds for the Board's expenses. I am asking to continue this momentum and bring new ideas to the community.

DANIEL SABEDRA Hi! My name is Daniel Sabedra. My wife Claudia and I moved to Lake Arrowhead in November of 2020. We absolutely love it here and because we plan to stay in the community, I would like to do what I can to make this a better place for all of us. So, looks like I am going to run for a board seat. Why should you vote for me? Without giving you my full resume, what I can tell you is that I have managed and worked major construction projects within budgets and time frames. I have worked in maintenance and facilities for most of my working years. I take pride in my home and community. My hobbies include boating, fitness, cycling, hiking, golfing, home improvements and pretty much anything that takes me outdoors. I have done many triathlons, half Ironman and completed a full Ironman. You might see me riding my bike through the neighborhood or on my paddle board on the lake. My philosophy is to serve others and I believe in mutual respect.

JAY CALDWELL Jay Caldwell was born and raised in Massachusetts. He got entirely sick of the snow and gray winters and moved down to Georgia in 2007 and has never looked back. A former insurance professional for over fifteen years, he made a career change in 2014 to enter the IT space in Quality Assurance. He now manages a QA department for a startup company. Jay works from home, and is a full time resident of Lake Arrowhead. He has previously co-ran a volunteer community theatre company for 11 years and has a wealth of experience in event planning, volunteer coordination and more. Jay and his spouse Rhonda, are new additions to Lake Arrowhead as of January 2022 but already in love with their mountain community here.

ROBERT MCGURK My wife and I purchased property in Lake Arrowhead in 2012, and have been full time residents since 2014. I’m a retired executive from Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. with extensive budget and management experience. I’m active in the community with the Men’s Golf Association, and support a variety of local charities including the Kathy B Davis Foundation and Angel House and I have served on the LAPOA Election and Nominating Committees and the Golf Committee. I’m running for a position on the Board because I believe in this community. I am familiar with the history of Lake Arrowhead and know what the LAPOA Board can and cannot do and as a result, I believe I bring a realistic approach to the position. I know for example, the Covenants should be updated, but cannot be eliminated and while unpopular, our POA dues must increase with inflation to avoid the trap we were in a few years ago with not enough money to provide adequate necessary services. Working with the Declarant is a negotiation, not a rubber stamp of approval because historically, not all of the development ideas have been in the best interest of LAPOA and not all the projects undertaken have been effectively managed. community interest 10TH ANNUAL ANGEL HOUSE GOLF TOURNAMENT

July 4th is a day with fireworks to celebrate our country’s independence and for the Lake Arrowhead LGA and MGA July 30th was a day to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the annual Angel House Golf Tournament. Like any celebration, planning for this event begins early in the year for the organizing committee and volunteers. After months of phone calls, emails and knocking on doors, contributions from our community and area businesses and commitments from golfers to play in the tournament has the makings for success. The morning of the tournament was a bit gloomy and damp but spirits were high for everyone as they scrambled around to make final preparations. By 7:00 AM tables for golfer’s check-in, hole sponsor signs for the tee boxes, 142 Bojangles biscuits for breakfast and silent auction and raffle items from the community and area businesses were in place for 33 teams of golfers ready for a day of fun and golf. As golfers rolled out to their assigned holes there were hoots and smiles with waves as they passed the photographer. All the proceeds from all of this tournament will be for The North Georgia Angel House. The North Georgia Angel House is a home that provides base and additional watchful oversight to girls between the ages of 12-21 in the foster care system. They pride themselves on helping these girls transition from the foster care system into life post foster care. They offer job readiness skills, financial planning, family readiness and much more. Their Independent Living program allows the girls to remain in foster care between the ages of 18-21 while working and/ or attending school. Their girls are able to save money and gradually learn to become self-sufficient outside of the foster care system.

Susan Worsley, Executive Director of Angel House sent the following message to us regarding the plans for the use of the proceeds from the tournament. “Thank you so much for the hard work that you ladies pour into this event every year! We are so thankful for you! We would love to use the funds to cover the cost of removing the fiberglass insulation in all buildings and replacing it with foam. The cost of the project is $21,400. Any assistance toward this goal will help us reduce our power bill, which is as high as $3000 each month during the summer months. The funds saved from this upgrade goes back into the funds we use for activities, clothing, food, etc. The other project we want to accomplish this year is to create an outdoor "she shed" from an unused single-bay garage. The building is currently failing us with water damage and mold. We plan to remove the structure, power wash the slab, and replace the building with a new metal "she shed" where the girls can come to paint, listen to music, and have yoga in peace. You've been instrumental in helping us meet so many goals every year. We cannot thank you enough.” The members of the LGA and MGA are proud to provide Angel House with funds for these projects. Golfing Fore Children’s contributions have directly helped the FCA ministry at two high schools in Cherokee County (Cherokee and Riverwood). Hundreds of students on the football, lacrosse, baseball and basketball teams are reached through witnessing, character building sessions, one-on-one praise sessions and weekly bible studies. At Cherokee County School the entire football team will be attending THE premiere FCA camp this summer at the University of West Georgia. There the coaches and athletes will work on perfecting their craft, and participating in break-out sessions to dive deeper in their faith; some hearing the Gospel for the very first time. —————————————————————MUST MINISTRIES——————————————————————

MUST brings people together to minister to others with compassion and love. Their mission is to serve our neighbors in need in the community and in doing so, transform the lives and communities in response to Christ’s call. MUST has a vision to become Georgia’s most respected servant leader— restoring lives one person and one community at a time. The MUST Ministries Client Services in Cherokee County offer food, housing programs, workforce development and clothing, as well as Breads and Sweets. Clients participate in a variety of classes in the classroom and the computer lab. Over 3,400 people were served from July 2020 to June 2021 alone; more than 285,000 lbs of food was distributed and they saw a 124% increase in housing clients. Over 500 people were provided job assistance and 300 placed in stable jobs. ——–———STUDENT SERVICES FOR CHEROKEE COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT (CCSD)——————

CCSD is a high performing public school system dedicated to “educating the emerging generation” with 40 schools and centers, 4,800 employees and more than 47,000 students—with many families and children in need. Student Services provides resources for homeless children and youth as well as students in foster care throughout Cherokee County. Student Services for CCSD is able to provide specific needs for the child and the family, in order to maintain the child in the school learning environment. For instance, a child and/or family may receive grocery cards for those families who have no food for the weekend. Roughly one-third of children are in supplemental lunch programs but have no weekend food.

community interest KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS PATRIOTIC FLAG PROGRAM Lake Arrowhead to participate in Knights of Columbus Patriotic Flag Program by placing American Flags (3’ X 5’) on a 10’ pole at both entrances and the Clubhouse. The flags will be placed a day or two prior to the seven flag days and picked up one or two days following. Those flag days are Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, September 11 and Veterans Day. The Knights of Columbus is an international men’s charitable organization with the Etowah Council 12826 serving the Canton area. Knights of Columbus Patriotic Flag Program The Knights of Columbus (Etowah Council #12826 in Canton, GA) will place an American Flag (3’ X 5’, nylon, sewn strips and embroidered stars) on a 10’ pole in front of your home for the 7 Flag Days shown below: The Flag location must be a residence located in Cherokee County, GA with curbs or grassy strip between sidewalk and street in order to join the Knights of Columbus Patriotic Flag Program.

The Boy in the Field Margot Livesy Harper- Collins After last month’s look back at the tragedy that was the Chernobyl nuclear plant, with its immense scale of devastation and impact, this month we will turn to a much quieter book. The Boy in the Field is a coming-of-age tale, in which a precipitating event shapes the journey of the three siblings involved. Set in September of 1999, the intermittent background noise of the story has to do with the anticipation of Y2K. The uncertainty, the desire to make sense of it all and occasionally dwell on what might actually happen on January 1, 2000, are a mirror for what the teenagers experience during this fall. Matthew, 18, Zoe, 16, and Duncan, 13 live near Oxford, England. Their father, Hal, is a blacksmith and owns the forge in town, and their mother, Betsy, is a solicitor. One day, the three are walking the 5 miles home from school because their father failed to pick them up as promised. (The reason for which brings a storm of its own later in the book). As they leave the populated area and walk down a road surrounded by fields, Zoe spots through the hedge a flash of red, and the three turn back to the nearest open gate and into the field. There lies a boy – a teenager likely a bit older than Zoe. The red is blood covering both of his lower legs. He is alive, but does not open his eyes, and his breathing is shallow. After going back to the road to flag down a car to get help, the three sit watch with the boy, reassuring him that he will be alright. He breathes out one word. After the ambulance has taken the boy, the dinner conversation at home is all about what happened. Soon, the police constable comes to let them know that Karel Lustig, who works nights at Cottage Hospital will be OK. And then, all the speculation turns to why this happened and who is responsible. The constable, during his individual questioning of the three, learns that each heard the boy breathe out a different word – Matthew heard “coward,” Zoe heard “cowrie” and Duncan heard “cowslip.” For each of the three teenagers – who are normal and healthy and come from a loving family - this jarring event will force them to confront every belief that made them feel secure before finding the boy. But the aftermath plays out differently for each of them, in terms of where they direct their energies.

Duncan is an adopted child, and an avid painter: he approaches the world through visualization, and the images that surface for him now bring up the fact of his adoption. He decides that he wants to know about his birth mother, and the circumstances surrounding her surrendering him. He tells his mother that more than anything he wants to find his “first mother,” – not to return to her, but to understand. “I’d like to know what I got from her, and I’d like to know that she made a good choice. Then we can both go on to what we were doing.” Zoe re-focuses her energies on the power of romance. She has had boyfriends, but they were merely that; not soul-mates, not the ones who could help her feel secure in light of the discovery of the injured boy in the field. (During this time she also has a disturbing observation. Noticing the relationships around her more closely she decides that her father is having an affair). Walking the town, she stares at passersby, wondering about who might give her the love, security and protection she needs. One looks back. Matthew is preparing for the next phase of his life, but is sidetracked by this incident, and becomes obsessed with finding the person who attacked Karel. He partners with Karel’s older brother and embarks on a mission to find the perpetrator. The good-natured constable sighs and lets him poke around, and the methods the two use are actually quite clever in some cases. This book has a very narrow lens as it focuses almost exclusively on the 5 members of the family, and the precocious dog Lilly. The reader is pulled into their world, and experiences things when and how they do. Thus, it is quiet, but the observations and events that arise within the family are profound. After last month’s heavy lifting, I wanted to go light for this month. Actually, had I turned in the last review on time, it might have been possible to do a “beach read” this month. But because of my extended convalescence, I found myself reading healing journey books instead, none of which I will foist on you. This book, at least, explores the interior thinking and emotions of its protagonists, so picking it up after a break feels like returning to an old friend. Quiet is sometimes what we need.
